"Do you think comics get the attention they deserve these days?
No. Every culture has their preference for certain art forms and takes those art forms more seriously than others. And comics are not really taken seriously. Which means an enormous freedom for comic artists! To work at the fringes of society means true freedom."
Judith Vanistendael (1974 -) Belgian comic artist, in Taggesspiegel, March 19, 2024.

WRAP UP FEBRUARY 2023
I think this is the month I read the most local/dutch books, so I am including them here and putting them apart...
ENGLISH
❤️ Ms Marvel Comics - G. Willow Wilson - bought these five comics in a local secondhanded bookstore and I then forgot about them for a while... they were really fun to read... some things were different than the disney+ serie but not so many :)
❤️ The Heartstopper Yearbook - Alice Oseman - Another YA book my local library bought after their last YA event in december... this one was really nice to discover the whole proces behind the graphic novels, the worldbuilding, the main characters :)
The Summer I Turned Pretty - Jenny Han This one was kind of a letdown.... tho I finished the book instead of stopping after fifty pages... so it must have been kind of good... just not as good as I expected...
DUTCH
De Trollen van Leif - Pieter Koolwijk & Linde Faas - a children’s book with some norse mythology in it about Trolls :) I actually read it more for the beautifull drawings but the story itself was also really nice!
❤️ Atan Van Kea (Atan Des Cyclades) - Judith Vanistendael - A graphic novel about a young greek sculptor named Atan, I read this three times again!
❤️ Zestig Lentes / Vrije Vlucht ( Soixante printemps en hiver )- Ingrid Chabbert & Aimée De Jongh - A surprise I did not expected to come across while visiting the library in the city where I have my new job... really loved it tho! Beautiful drawings and beautiful story!
Wij, Elisabeth - Jo De Poorter - The Belgian crown princess Elisabeth (who will be the first Belgian Queen ever) turned 21 years so the author wrote this book ‘for her’ with portraits of current and future queens in Europe, and small biographies of ‘queens forever’. I am in kind of a royalty obsession because of a fic I am writing so this one was some pleasant research :D

Ivanka odporúča na Vianoce tieto grafické romány
Ivanka odporúča na Vianoce tieto grafické romány
História komiksov má korene v ďalekej minulosti. Veď už naši pradávni predkovia zaznamenávali svoje príbehy kresbami na steny v jaskyniach, na krčahy, reliéfy, kamene, papyrusy, okná stredovekých katedrál atď. Grafické romány sú síce verbálne striedme, ale musia byť literárne i výtvarne starostlivo premyslené. Tento rok som mala možnosť prečítať niekoľko vynikajúcich komiksov a ponúkam vám svoje…

Thought Bubble
Had a Fabulous day at Thought Bubble yesterday, especially the panel discussion I went to called “Message in a Comic”. Fascinating perspectives on graphic novels with personal, political stories. The contributors all had different areas they focused on: Kim-Joy, Judith Vanistendael, Lewis Hancock and Joe Latham.
Lots of amazing artists there with their work too.

What has the EU Ever Done for Us? “Europe+” Comic Challenge goes on tour
What has the EU Ever Done for Us? “Europe+” Comic Challenge goes on tour
The shortlisted entries of this year’s Animate Europe comics competition, challenging creators with to come up with a comic addressing the value of the European Union, are now on tour around the continent. With Britain’s involvement in the EU drawing to a close, despite the difficulties reaching that end, there has to be more than a little irony that the winner was David Shaw, from Ireland, with “

Wrap Up March 2022
Did read a lot of picture books this month (blame my internship)
Extra Yarn - Mac Barnett & Jon Klassen: I noticed the drawing style of Jon Klassen while I read ‘Pax’ (a story about a boy and his fox) so I picked this picture book :) colorful story about a girl with a lot of yarn...
With The Fire On High - Elizabeth Acevedo A book with a lot of food in it can always win over my foodie side :P Emoni just really won my heart!
Max And The Superheroes - Rocio Bonilla Saw this book at my work (kindergarten) and I really loved the graphics... they resemble a comic book style :) A really nice picture book about a boy and his favourite superhero.
De Walvisbibliotheek (The Whale Library) - Zidrou & Judith Vanistendael It was the title that drew me to this graphic novel, and it were the aquarel drawings by Judith that really did it for me!
Verder dan Ver - Joris Thys Rereading this book after I finally bought it. The drawings are still so beautiful!
De NEEhoorn (Das NEINhorn / The Unicorn That Said No) - Marc Uwe Kling & Astrid Henn Very funny picture book about an unicorn that always says NO. I was very tempted to buy this for my newborn niece, but then I bought it for myself :D I just love the drawings and all the details so much!
Holy Cow - David Duchovny I stumbled upon this small book (around 200 pages) at my local library... The funny point of view of Elsie (the cow) and the drawings by Natalya Balnova really made this a funny and light read.

Citlivý a smutno-krásny príbeh o chorobe, smrti a…
