The Bood Of Jesus is a fantasy drama movie written and directed by and starring Spencer Williams. The story is about a Baptist woman who, after getting accidentally shot by her atheist husband, is sent to a crossroads, at which Satan tries to lead her astray. The movie was very successful, in 1991, it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.  The movie was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The movie was "LOST" until the mid-1980s, when it was found in a Texas warehouse. Pioneering Black Actors of Hollywood By Susan King

Clarence Muse and Rex Ingram by Susan King Thirty years ago, the legendary Oscar-winning actor Sidney Poitier reflected on the Black performers who paved the way for him in the Los Angeles Times: “The guys who were forerunners to me, like Canada Lee, Rex Ingram, Clarence Muse and women like Hattie McDaniel, Louise Beavers and Juanita Moore, they were terribly boxed in. They were maids and stable people and butlers, principally. But they, in some way, prepared the ground for me.”

Poitier prepared the ground for such contemporary Black actors and directors currently in competition during the 2021 awards season such as Regina King and Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night in Miami), Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), the late Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday) and Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah).

But it is imperative to remember the veterans from the 1930s-1960s who tried to break out of stereotypes and maintain dignity at a time when Hollywood wanted to “box” them in.

Clarence Muse 

Muse appeared in countless Hollywood films often uncredited. And as Donald Bogle points out in his book Hollywood Black, Muse spoke his mind to directors if he felt he was being pushed around or when his characters were stereotypes. Bogle stated, “At another time when Muse questioned the actions of his character in director King Vidor’s 1935 Old South feature SO RED THE ROSE, Vidor recalled that Muse was quite vocal in expressing his concerns. A change was made. Vidor could not recall exactly what the issue was, but he never forgot Muse’s objection.”

The 1932 pre-Code crime drama Night World screened at the 2019 TCM Classic Film Festival to a standing-room only crowd. The film stars Lew Ayres, Boris Karloff and Muse as the doorman at a club owned by Karloff. The audience was surprised that such a stereotypical role was anything but thanks to Muse’s poignant performance. Instead of being forced to be the comic relief, Muse’s Washington is a man worried about his wife’s surgery at a local hospital. Though his boss doesn’t treat him as an equal—after all it is 1932—Karloff’s Happy shows general concern toward Washington.

Muse, said Bogle, “also worked in race movies, where he realized there was still a real chance for significant roles and narratives.” One such was BROKEN STRINGS (’40), which he also co-wrote. It’s certainly not a great film, but Muse gives a solid turn as a famed Black violinist who wants his young son to follow in his footsteps. But the son wants to play swing with his violin.

Muse, who was a graduate of Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, also co-wrote the Louis Armstrong standard “Sleepy Time Down South.” In the 1920s, he worked at two Harlem theater companies, Lincoln Players and Lafayette Players, and 23 years later he became the first African American Broadway director with Run Little Chillun. He continued to act, appearing in Poitier’s directorial debut BUCK AND THE PREACHER (’72), CAR WASH (’76) and THE BLACK STALLION (’79) and was elected to the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1973. He died one day before his 90th birthday in 1979.

Rex Ingram 

Tall and imposing, Ingram had a great presence on the big screen and a rich melliferous voice. No wonder his best-known role was as the gigantic Genie in the bottle in Alexander Korda’s lavish production of THE THIEF OF BAGDAD (’40). Born in 1895, he began his film career in movies such as Cecil B. DeMille’s THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (’23). Ingram also has the distinction of playing God in THE GREEN PASTURES (’36) and Lucifer Jr. both on Broadway in 1940 and in the 1943 film adaptation of the musical CABIN IN THE SKY.

TWO DAYS TOUR TO COLCA CANYON

Day 1: Arequipa - Colca Valley

7.30 am to 08:00 we pick you up from the hospital, and departure by bus on your excursion towards the Colca Valley driving across Pampa Cañahuas at the Aguada Blanca National Reserve, habitat of herds of vicuñas and stopping at the Mirador de Los Andes, the crater of Chucura, the Mirador de Chivay, where beautiful pre-Inca terraces still being cultivated by native Collaguas can be observed. Arrival to the town of Chivay at 13:00hrs. approx. Lunch.

In the afternoon you can enjoy the thermal and medical baths.

During dinner have a folkloric show (if the hotel is in Chivay otherwise you need additional transfers)

Day 2: Colca Valley -Condor's Cross - Arequipa

Early in the morning departure to the "Condor's Cross" from where the great Andean bird, the Condor, may be spotted flying in circles above still farmed green pre-Hispanic terraces. Enjoy the impressive panorama of the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world (3,000mts.). There you have hiking of one hour along the canyon. On the way back to Chivay, At the town of Yanque, visit its beautiful church and its characteristic stone streets among other attractions. To have spectacular views of the Colca Valley, we will drive to the observation points of Achoma and Artahuilque where you can see the amazing pre-Inca terraces,  and also to the town of Maca.

After lunch at a local restaurant, return to the city of Arequipa, arriving at 17:00 to 18:00hrs. approx.

1st day: arrival on the 19th around 6:30 in morning; student tour in morning, lunch together, try all foods. Take transportation to lodging where we will be staying. Leave passport in safe space in clinic/home, just bring ID. 2 hour of spanish classes in a Spanish school

Winter; morning is very sunny and nice around 60ish, night can get to 46-43 degrees. Not raining yet! 

20th-23rd around 8 hours a day of dental work; 32 hours total. Lunch break!  

Water- no tap water. Bottled water

Tourism: Arequipa, which places to visit. Colca Canyon one of the deepest canyons, deeper than the grand canyon. 2 days, higher elevation 11,400 ft, cold, middle of the mountains. Stay in a lodge in a town. Practice as much Spanish as possible.

Get Peruvian money; exchange in Mira Flores and Arequipa. Bring nice new-looking dollars

Alton Prevette, 77

Alton Hiram Prevette, age 77, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2019 at the Gordon Hospice Home in Statesville. He was born October 27, 1941 in Wilkes County to Mack and Lela Dillard Prevette. Mr. Prevette was a member of North Iredell Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth Prevette; and sister, Evelyn Prevette.

           Surviving are his wife, Linda Sue Stokes Prevette; daughter, Lori Ann Prevette of Mulberry; step daughter, Natasha Brown and husband Tony of Boonville; step-son, Jonathan Hefner and wife Heather of Bunn; step grandchildren, Hollis Hefner and Jane Hefner; brothers, Sabert Prevette, Don Prevette both of North Wilkesboro, Bryce Prevette and wife Kathleen of Iredell; sisters, Ena Johnson and Lavaughn Johnson both of North Wilkesboro; several nieces and nephews.

           Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at Shady Grove Baptist Church on Windy Gap Road with Rev. Benny Romans and Rev. William Souther officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Shady Grove Baptist Church from 1:00 until 2:00 on Wednesday, prior to the service. The family has requested no flowers. Memorials may be made to Gordon Hospice, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

 Sandra Golightly, 57

Ms. Sandra Lenee Golightly, 57, of North Wilkesboro, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2019.

           Sandra was born on November 22, 1961 in Burke County to Arnold Clark and Sadie Emma Cook Clark Mace.

           Sandra is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jeffery Clark.

           Sandra  is survived by her son, Heath Carroll of Valdese; sister, Rita Franklin; brothers, Bryan Clark, Rickie Clark and one granddaughter, all of Morganton.

           No services are to be held.

           In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Adams Funeral Home of Wilkes P.O. Box 396 Moravian Falls, NC 28654 to help with final expenses.

           Adams Funeral Home of Wilkes has the honor of serving the Golightly Family.

 Gaye Taylor, 91

Edra Gaye Taylor, age 91, of Millers Creek, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019 at her home. Mrs. Taylor was born November 4, 1927 in Ashe County, NC to Thurmond and Lula Sheets Dancy. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Jerry Taylor.

           Funeral services were March 23,   at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Lyn Lambert officiating. Burial followed in Mountlawn Memorial Park.  

           Mrs. Taylor is survived by; her husband, Oscar "Jack" Taylor. One daughter, Lisa Dyer, and husband, Joey, of Millers Creek. One sister, Eula Collins, of Virginia. Also surviving are two grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

           Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to; Wake Forest Baptist Health and Hospice, 126 Executive Dr., Suite  110, Wilkesboro, NC 28697.

 Irene  Huffman 91

Irene Hope Christenbury Huffman passed away at age 91 of March 21, 2019. She lived in Wilkesboro, N.C. for 56 years. She was born on June 29, 1927 in Charlotte, N.C. One of her favorite things to do was playing bridge. Soon after moving to Wilkes County, she joined a bridge club and gained many friends. Her other hobbies included flower arranging, amateur photography, sewing, and crafts of all kinds.

           After graduating high school in 1945 she married Neal Watts Christenbury after the end of WWII and they lived in Raleigh N.C. During those years she worked for The State Department in Raleigh. After moving to Wilkesboro she worked for Henderson's florist as a floral designer and later was a bookkeeper for several companies in town before becoming a manager at Thomas and Howard Wholesale Grocery for almost 10 years. She also worked at Wilkes Developmental Day  School for several years as a part time aide.

           She married Nathan Cleveland Huffman in 1973 and they were married until his death in 2015.

           She was preceded in death by her parents, Troy Andrew Hope and Pearl Magdalene Petrea Hope, her sister Mary Ella Hope Bartlett Moser, and brothers: Norman Andrew Hope and John Henry Hope, as well as her first husband Neal Watts Christenbury

           Mrs. Huffman is survived by three daughters; Joyce Ann Christenbury Anderson of Wilkesboro, Mary Kay Christenbury Ward and husband Timothy Sherrill Ward of Graham, Deborah Hope Christenbury of North Wilkesboro, a son; Larry Neal Christenbury and wife Susan Flynt Christenbury of Wilkesboro, three grandchildren; John Anderson and Evan Anderson both of Wilkesboro and Scott Christenbury and wife Elizabeth Shandley Christenbury of Huntersville and two great grandsons; Everette George and Gray Robert Christenbury.

           The family plans to have a memorial service in celebration of her life Friday, March 29, 2019 2:00 PM at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Pastor Kevin Brown officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

  Lake Marley, 93

Mrs. Lake Juanita Marley, age 93 of Wilkesboro passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center.

           Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Pastor Michael Johnson and Pastor Michael Brown officiating.              Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Saturday evening at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

           Mrs. Marley was born January 24, 1926 in Wilkes County to Grady Allen and Loretta Cornelia Benge Greene.  She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She loved babysitting, gospel music, going to church, gardening and loved her farm animals.    

           In addition to her parents,she was preceded in death by her first husband; Walter Walker, three sisters; Ella Mae Crane, Veoria Eller and Deloris Walker and one brother; Ronald Greene.

           She is survived by her husband; Grover Cleveland Marley of the home, eight daughters; Jeanette Dowell and husband Woodie of North Wilkesboro,

Brenda St. John and husband Boyd of Lenoir, Janet Marshall and husband Dale of Lumberton, Glenda Burr and friend Luke of Bay St. Louis, MS, `Robin Blankenship and husband Tim of Ferguson, Becky Parker of Purlear, Pam Marley and Debbie Duarte both of Wilkesboro, four sons; Bruce Walker and wife Debbie Lenoir, Lavin Walker and wife Denise of Roaring River, Clayton Walker and wife Tammy of Granite Falls and Scottie Marley and wife Jennie of Ferguson, nineteen grandchildren and thirty-four great grandchildren. Flowers will be accepted.

  Sidney Tharpe, 66

Mr. Sidney Tharpe, age 66 of Roaring River passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019 in Cobb County, Georgia.

           Funeral services were March 25,   at Rachel Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Wiles and Rev. Earl Dowell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.        Mr. Tharpe was born August 19, 1952 in Surry County to Sheridan D. and Margaret Dowell Tharpe.  He worked for Century Fire Protection.

           He was preceded in death by his mother.

           He is survived by his fiance'; Judy Sidden of Roaring River, one daughter; Miranda Garris and husband Vee, and one son; Kris Earl Lee Tharpe all of Roaring River, his father Sheridan D. Tharpe of North Wilkesboro, five grandchildren; Clint Garris and wife Samantha, Mary Garris Walker and husband Casey, Seth Tharpe, Luke Tharpe and Madeline Garris, one sister; Donna Bryant and husband Tim and one brother; Timothy Tharpe and wife Debbie all of Roaring River.

  Ruth Frazier, 84

Mrs. Ruth Frazier, 84, of Moravian Falls, passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2019.

           Ruth was born on Tuesday, May 8, 1934 in Wilkes County to Sam Bullis an Omie Prevette Bullis.

           Ruth is preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Melvin Cecil Moore and J. Sherman Frazier.

           Ruth is survived by her sons, Rodney Moore of Stony Point, Anthony Moore of King; grandchildren, Tuesday Moore of Moravian Falls, Brandon Moore of Winston Salem; brothers, Ralph Bullis and wife, Joyce, Hubert Bullis and wife, Jewel all of Moravian Falls, Glenn Bullis and wife, Jean of Wilkesboro.

           No public services are to be held.

   Junius Parsons, 56

Mr. Junius "June" Parsons, age 56 of Boomer, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at his home.

           Funeral services were March 26,   at Thankful Baptist Church with Rev. Ronald Howell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.  

           Mr. Parsons was born June 30, 1962 in Wilkes County to Sam Parsons, Jr. and Louise Saner Parsons. He was employed by Bernhardt Furniture. Mr. Parsons was a member of Thankful Baptist Church. He loved his children, grandchildren and cooking.

           He was preceded in death by his parents.

           Mr. Parsons is survived by two daughters; Kristena Parsons of Boomer and Jennifer Hopson of Charlotte, four grandchildren; Cassidy, Kynzley, Jaishawn and Payton Parsons, a sister; Josephine Redmond of Moravian Falls and four brothers; Edwin Parsons of Boomer, Sammy Parsons  and wife Denise of MD, Randy Parsons and wife Renee of Hickory and Julius Parsons of Boomer.

 Archie  Blankenship, 89

Archie Hall Blankenship, age 89, of Ferguson, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at his home. He was born December 27, 1929 in Wilkes

County to Philo Hall and Josephine Gross Blankenship. Archie was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Ferguson. He loved the outdoors and feeding wildlife. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Blankenship was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Ernest Blankenship.

           Surviving are his sons, Barry Hall Blankenship of Ferguson, Rev. Brian Keith Blankenship and wife Alice of North Wilkesboro, Bobby Dale Blankenship of Ferguson; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Johnson and husband David of Ferguson; grandchildren, Deborah Eller, Tracy Hauser, Brittany Blankenship, Justin Church, Brandon Blankenship, Brenna Blankenship; great grandchildren, Kaylee, Halley, Levi, Leah, Chloe, Weston, Archer, Jackson and Kinsley; brothers, Travis Blankenship of Ferguson, Ralph Blankenship and wife Sandra of Deep Gap; and sisters, Margie Mull of Cedar Lake, Indiana, Shelby Jean Blankenship of Ferguson.

           Funeral service was March 24,  at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Ferguson with Rev. Brian Keith Blankenship officiating.                     Burial  followed in the Church Cemetery.

 Gene Wood, 77

Gene Allen Wood, age 77, of Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, March 18, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. He was born February 15, 1942 in Wilkes County to John Arlen and Ruth Rose Wood. Mr. Wood was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Moravian Falls and a truck driver with Estes for 30 years. Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his parents; son, James Randy Brookshire; brothers, Otto Wood and Wayne Wood; and sister-in-law, Ursula Wood.

           Surviving are his wife, Sallie Rosalie Wood of the home; daughter, Teresa Little and husband Bill of Millers Creek; grandchildren, Steven Brookshire of Boomer; sister, Clara Mae Wood of Florida; brother, Jim Wood of Columbia, South Carolina; sister-in-law, Loretta Wood of Florida; aunt, Glenda Wood of Hays; and his dog, Coco.

           Funeral service was March 22, at Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Florence Mills

Florence Mills (born Florence Winfrey; January 25, 1896 – November 1, 1927), billed as the "Queen of Happiness", was an African-American cabaret singer, dancer, and comedian known for her effervescent stage presence, delicate voice, and winsome, wide-eyed beauty.

Life and career

A daughter of formerly enslaved parents, Nellie (Simon) and John Winfrey, she was born Florence Winfrey in 1896 in Washington, D.C. She began performing as a child. At the age of six she sang duets with her two older sisters, Olivia and Maude. They eventually formed a vaudeville act, calling themselves the Mills Sisters. The act did well, appearing in theaters along the Atlantic seaboard. Florence's sisters eventually quit performing, but Florence stayed with it, determined to pursue a career in show business. She joined Ada Smith, Cora Green, and Carolyn Williams in the Panama Four, which had some success. She then joined a traveling black show, the Tennessee Ten, in which in 1917 she met the dance director and acrobatic dancer Ulysses "Slow Kid" Thompson (1888–1990), to whom she would be married from 1921 until her death.

Mills became well known in New York as a result of her role in the successful Broadway musical Shuffle Along (1921) at Daly's 63rd Street Theatre (barely on Broadway), one of the events marking the beginning of the Harlem Renaissance. She received favorable reviews in London, Paris, Ostend, Liverpool, and other European venues. She told the press that despite her years in vaudeville, she credited Shuffle Along with launching her career.

After Shuffle Along, Lew Leslie, a white promoter, hired Mills and Thompson to appear nightly at the Plantation Club. The revue featured Mills and a wide range of black artists, including visiting performers such as Paul Robeson. In 1922, Leslie turned the nightclub acts into a Broadway show, The Plantation Revue. It opened at the Forty-Eighth Street Theatre on July 22. The English theatrical impresario Charles B. Cochran brought the Plantation company to London, and they appeared at the London Pavilion in spring 1923 in a show he produced, Dover Street to Dixie, with a local all-white cast in the first half and Mills starring with the all-black Plantation cast in the second half.

In 1924 she headlined at the Palace Theatre, the most prestigious booking in vaudeville, and became an international star with the hit show Lew Leslie's Blackbirds (1926). Among her fans when she toured Europe was the Prince of Wales, who told the press that he had seen Blackbirds 11 times.

Many in the black press admired her popularity and saw her as a role model: not only was she a great entertainer but she was also able to serve as "an ambassador of good will from the blacks to the whites... a living example of the potentialities of the Negro of ability when given a chance to make good".

Mills was featured in Vogue and Vanity Fair and was photographed by Bassano's studios and Edward Steichen. Her signature song was her biggest hit, "I'm a Little Blackbird Looking for a Bluebird". Another of her hit songs was "I'm Cravin' for that Kind of Love".

Death

Exhausted from more than 300 performances of the hit show Blackbirds in London in 1926, she became ill with tuberculosis. She died of infection following an operation at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City, New York on November 1, 1927. She was 31 years old. Most sources, including black newspapers, such as the Chicago Defender and the Pittsburgh Courier, and mainstream publications, including the New York Times and the Boston Globe, reported that she died of complications from appendicitis.

Her death shocked the music world. The New York Times reported that more than 10,000 people visited the funeral home to pay their respects; thousands attended her funeral, including James Weldon Johnson, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and stars of the stage, vaudeville and dance. Honorary pall bearers including singers Ethel Waters and Lottie Gee, both of whom had performed with Mills. Dignitaries and political figures of both races sent their condolences. She is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, in Bronx, New York.

Her widower, Ulysses Thompson, a native of Prescott, Arkansas, was a dancer and comedian, having learned his trade in the tough world of circuses and traveling medicine shows in the early years of the century. He subordinated his career to hers, acting as her manager, promoter, minder and companion. After her death, he continued performing, traveling around the world, including appearances in China and Australia, until the late 1930s. He later married Gertrude Curtis, New York's first black woman dentist (1911) and the widow of the lyricist Cecil Mack (né R. C. McPherson). Thompson outlived both of his wives; he died in 1990, at the age of 101, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Legacy

Mills is credited with having been a staunch and outspoken supporter of equal rights for African Americans, with her signature song "I'm a Little Blackbird" being a plea for racial equality, and during her life she broke many racial barriers.

After her death, Duke Ellington memorialized Mills in his song "Black Beauty". Fats Waller also memorialized Mills in a song, "Bye Bye Florence", recorded in Camden, New Jersey, on November 14, 1927, featuring Bert Howell on vocals with organ by Waller; "Florence" was recorded with Juanita Stinette Chappell on vocals and Waller on organ. Other songs recorded the same day include "You Live On in Memory" and "Gone but Not Forgotten—Florence Mills", neither of which were composed by Waller.

A residential building at 267 Edgecombe Avenue in Harlem's Sugar Hill neighborhood is named after her.

Mills was pictured on a postage stamp issued by the island of Grenada in honour of "The Birth of the Silver Screen".

A biography by Bill Egan entitled Florence Mills: Harlem: Jazz Queen was published in 2006, and a children's book, Baby Flo: Florence Mills Lights Up the Stage, by Alan Schroeder, was published by Lee and Low in 2012.
