Jeremy Skibicki receives four life sentences | CTV News
Convicted serial killer Jeremy Skibicki has been handed four life sentences with no chance of parole for 25 years in the murders of four Indigenous women.
The 37-year-old man sat quiet and emotionless in the prisoner’s box of a Manitoba Court of King’s Bench courtroom Wednesday. He spoke only once when Chief Justice Glen Joyal asked if he had anything to say.
“No,” he said.
In July, Skibicki was found guilty of murdering four Indigenous women: Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran, Rebecca Contois and an unidentified victim given the name Mashkode Bizhiki'ikwe or Buffalo Woman.
The conviction carries with it an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years. That sentence was imposed on Skibicki for each of the four counts of first-degree murder. Joyal noted due to rulings by the Supreme Court of Canada these life sentences must be served concurrently rather than consecutively.

We Are Bruised But Whole Together
Arthur wakes up in modern Glastonbury and to his unfathomable relief finds Merlin. But nothing is simple. Everything he knew is gone, for one. He wonders what of his achievements were actually his own, and not just Merlin's magic, for another. Arthur also has to face the fact that he kept the ban on magic going. Was he ever truly a good king?
There is also the “I love you” he mouthed to Merlin before dying. Something he cannot afford to focus on, because, as Merlin tells him, Albion’s time of greatest need is upon them.
Then comes the unthinkable. Merlin’s magic, which has been growing over the last thousand years, is suddenly too strong for the sorcerer's human body to handle. Faced with the prospect of losing Merlin, feelings suddenly come out and Arthur realizes that if he can save the man he loves and the land of Albion, he might be able to forgive himself for his mistakes and everything he is not.
The question is, can he?
Expect fluff, angst, humor, banter, hurt/comfort, whump, and lots of Merthur!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Merlin held Arthur as the sun began to set. He rubbed a hand up and down the other man’s back as Arthur gripped him tightly. He could hear Arthur slowly working to pull himself together.
Finally, Merlin heard a whisper.
“Sorry.”
“You’re apologizing to me?” Merlin said incredulously. “For having emotions?”
Arthur raised his head slowly, letting go of Merlin. “Seems so.”
Merlin could not let that stand.
“Of all the… Arthur, don’t you dare try to apologize to me for crying after learning what you did just now,” Merlin told him. “Don’t you dare. You emotionally repressed, impossible, dollophead of a king! Don’t you dare apologize for being human.”
Arthur met Merlin’s gaze with his red-rimmed blue eyes slightly wide. Then a smile started to grow on his face. “You still can’t address me like that.”
“What? The dollophead bit? Or the emotionally repressed, impossible, idiot bit?” Merlin crossed his arms.
“Both… Wait, did you just add ‘idiot’ to the insults, Merlin?”
“Yes. Seems I did. Problem, Your Majesty? ”
Merlin saw Arthur open his mouth to retort, then let out a slight laugh and shake his head. “I’m glad you didn’t change, Merlin.”

† dating : bokuto.
❥ scenario: what it's like to date bokuto ❥ no triggers; not rated. ❥ i don't have any beta readers - you get what you get. ❥ requested!
❥ sorry for being late, anon.
let me just begin this by saying.. it would definitely be an experience.
❥ he is very well knowing for his endless energy and enthusiasm. depending on who he's around, it can be considered just a bit too much. whether it's something he's passionate about or volleyball, sometimes even the simplest of activities can spark him to go at it full force. there's no lack of excitement when he's with you, date or not, it's going to be an experience. he's absolutely the type to drag you out for spontaneous dates or surprising you with things just to make you smile.
❥ one thing that you need to be prepared for is the fact that bokuto deals with major highs and major lows. you would, of course, need to learn how to deal with things like this - not in a bad way, but it's an important factor about him. being in a good mood, he's unstoppable, honestly. he's so cheerful and energetic, ready to take on the world and make sure you're laughing and smiling the entire time. however, he's going to need someone to be that way for him; he's going to need reassurance and support. he would deeply appreciate and adore someone who's able to understand him and his moods. someone that won't simply avoid him when he's not in the best of moods.
❥ on the other hand, he's probably the most affectionate person around. physically and emotionally. he's going to be attached to you one way or the other, holding your hand, hugging you by the side or just leaning against you while you're reading or watching something. he's considerably loyal and when he's decided someone is worth it, he's never going to let go, he's in entirely. he's going to remind you constantly that he adores you, how perfect you are to him, etc etc.
❥ like some of the others, bokuto has a childlike manner to him on a normal basis - it's something that's easy to be seen but it doesn't mean he's incapable of serious moments. it's definitely never a boring experience when he's around. it's not uncommon to build blanket forts or having friendly competitions at the arcade and honestly, it's not something that's bad. he easily keeps the light spirit alive - he's a great match for someone who needs to heal their inner child. he has his serious moments but he has a playful nature to him that can be contagious. very carefree and joyal.
❥ he is your biggest fan. he's a very encouraging person, never wanting to see anyone he cares about give up on something they're passionate about. he considers it his job to cheer you up and take care of you, never wanting to see you down in the dumps or upset over something for too long. he cares deeply about your success and will do everything in his power to make sure you achieve all of your goals and never give up.
❥ just as he is on the court - bokuto is a loyal, dependable partner. communication, trust and teamwork at the key to a strong bond and he values these things. he's there to hold you up just as much as you're there to hold him up. he would very much need to be in a relationship built o mutual ground but also not a strict 50/50 rule. i feel like bokuto leans on the 50/50 most of the time, but picking up the percentage when the other can't or is struggling. he's your 50, 80, 20, etc. as long as there is communication.
all in all - dating bokuto would be super fun. very much golden retriever vibes but.. not the toxic kind. he's there for you and needs you to be there for him. he will do everything he can to make you feel loved and appreciated at all times. make sure to do the same for him.

Make your voice heard and ask the CDC to:
Recommend updated 2024-2025 COVID vaccines for all ages AND
Strengthen our vaccine drive by recommending more frequent boosting (at least every six months) and more frequent updates to the vaccines, adjusted for the latest variants.
Submit a public comment using our sample language below.
You can also register to give Oral Public Comment at the upcoming June 26-28 online CDC ACIP Meeting at: https://www2.cdc.gov/vaccines/acip/acip_publiccomment.asp
Submit written comments and/or register to make oral comments at the meeting by Monday, June 17 at 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time.
It’s important to submit a personalized comment, which can be brief. Ideas for a personalized comment:
How you, your family, or your community would be impacted by fall vaccine eligibility being restricted to only high risk groups (such as older age or immunocompromised status)
Barriers to vaccination your have faced, particularly if your eligibility was questioned or misinterpreted by a vaccine provider
How out-of-pocket costs are a barrier to getting the latest vaccines
Also feel free to take inspiration from or borrow the language in our sample public comment below.
Docket No. CDC–2024–0043
Updated 2024-2025 COVID vaccines must be recommended for people of all ages, regardless of health status. A restrictive approach to eligibility would create undue barriers for vulnerable people and discourage high risk people from getting needed vaccine boosters.
The vaccine schedule should address waning efficacy in the months following vaccination [1-3] as well as emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 strains by recommending updated vaccination for all ages, at least every six months. Recent vaccination is also associated with a lower risk of developing Long COVID following a COVID infection [4] as well as a lower risk of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in children (MIS-C) [5].
The CDC’s clear and unequivocal recommendation of updated COVID vaccination for all ages will influence what healthcare providers recommend, and what health insurances cover. Moreover, it will improve public awareness regarding the need for updated vaccination.
The CDC must ensure equitable and affordable access to updated vaccines and prevent limited access because of financial constraints or demographics. The CDC’s Bridge vaccine access program is slated to end August 2024 and must be extended to ensure uninsured and underinsured people have access to the updated vaccines this fall [6].

CDC’s ACIP meeting information on the Federal Register: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2024/05/24/2024-11439/meeting-of-the-advisory-committee-on-immunization-practices
Vaccination with the latest updated vaccines continues to be foundational to a multilayered approach to COVID, providing protection against both acute disease and Long COVID. Far too few Americans have received the latest vaccines. Only approximately 22.6% of adults and 14.8% of children have received the latest 2023-2024 vaccines (as of June 1, 2024), which have been available since Fall 2023. COVID vaccination rates in both groups lags far behind influenza vaccination rates. Only 7.1% of adults aged 65 and older received the recommended two doses of the 2023-2024 vaccine (as of April 27, 2024).
Vaccine efficacy wanes significantly four to six months following vaccination, making updated vaccination important for all people as COVID continues to spread in our communities. Vaccine approaches that restrict access based on age or risk status put all of us at risk and leave those at high risk of severe consequences of COVID infection confused about whether they qualify to receive additional doses. A more frequent vaccination approach providing vaccination at least every six months as well as frequent updates to match current variants is needed to better protect all of us amid year-round COVID spread.
The CDC’s Bridge Access Program, which provides COVID vaccines to uninsured and underinsured adults free of charge, is due to end August 2024. The end of this program will unnecessarily put vulnerable people at risk, and public health officials must advocate for continuation and expansion of this program.
Submitted written comments or registration to make oral comments at the meeting must be received by the CDC no later than June 17 at 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time

The FDA, between now and May 8, is accepting public comments for their upcoming vaccine committee meeting. Let them know that all of us need access to COVID vaccines at least twice a year.
Make your voice heard and ask the FDA Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee Meeting to:
Ensure vaccine manufacturers anticipate the upcoming dominant strain of SARS-CoV-2.
Recommend updated COVID vaccines for all ages AND
Strengthen our vaccine drive by recommending more frequent boosting (at least every six months) and more frequent updates to the vaccines, adjusted for the latest variants.
Submit a public comment. Feel free to use our sample language below.
You can also register to give Oral Public Comment at the upcoming May 16 online FDA Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee Meeting at: [email protected] on May 1, 2024. THAT’S TONIGHT!
Submitted written comments for the meeting must be received by the FDA via the Federal Register no later than May 8, 2024 at 11:59 Eastern Daylight Time.
It’s important to submit a personalized comment, which could include the importance of anticipating the next dominant viral strain, the lack of vaccine access that has impacted or would impact you, or how out-of-pocket costs are a barrier in your family or community. Feel free to take inspiration from or borrow the language in our sample public comment below.
Docket No. FDA–2024–N–0970 Scientific evidence indicates updated vaccines are needed to address the ongoing changes in COVID variants, and they should ideally be allowed, available, and fully covered by public funds and/or insurance, for people of all ages at least every six months. The vaccine schedule should address waning efficacy in the months following vaccination [1-3] as well as emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 strains. The FDA’s decision will affect the current and future vaccine approach including what healthcare providers recommend, what health insurance covers, and level of public engagement. It is of utmost importance that the FDA anticipates the newest viral variants and provides recommendations that anticipates the next dominant strain in the next six months. This requires that the FDA ensure that manufacturers anticipate the newest variants. Restricting vaccinations to only annual updates misses an opportunity, given that there is the potential to update the vaccines to better match perpetually emerging variants. Updates to all vaccine types are needed, and mRNA vaccines are particularly suited to frequent updates. The recommendation for only annual vaccination also creates barriers for vulnerable people and discourages high risk people from getting needed vaccine boosters. The FDA must ensure support equitable and affordable access to updated vaccines and prevent limited access because of financial constraints or demographics by advocating for programs such as the CDC’s bridge program that ensures no cost access. Relief as Canadian Serial Killer Found Guilty in Deaths of Four Women
Tearful cheers erupted in a packed Canadian courtroom on Thursday as a judge found Jeremy Skibicki guilty of first-degree murder in the deaths of four Indigenous women. The verdict brought some sense of justice to the grieving families and communities, but for Jeremy Contois, whose younger sister Rebecca was among the victims, the relief was tempered.
"I feel a little sense of relief," Mr. Contois said, though he acknowledged that true closure would not come until Skibicki is formally sentenced.
A Landmark Verdict
In his oral verdict, Manitoba Court of King's Bench Chief Justice Glenn Joyal dismissed the defense's argument that Skibicki was not criminally responsible for the murders due to schizophrenia. Prosecutors successfully argued that Skibicki deliberately killed Rebecca Contois and three other women in 2022 in crimes that were calculated and racially motivated.
The guilty verdict marks a significant moment for Canada's Indigenous community, which has long struggled with violence against women. The court was packed with the victims' families and friends, who displayed photos of their loved ones as a poignant reminder of the human cost of these crimes.
The Victims
Skibicki's victims include Morgan Harris, 39; Marcedes Myran, 26; and Rebecca Contois, who was 24. The fourth woman remains unidentified and has been given the name Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe, meaning Buffalo Woman, by Indigenous elders. Throughout the trial, a buffalo head sat on a red cloth near the prosecutors in tribute to the unnamed victim.
Details of the Crimes
According to court documents, Skibicki targeted and exploited vulnerable women he met at local homeless shelters in Winnipeg, a city of 820,000 in the prairie province. He assaulted the women, strangled or drowned them, and then committed sex acts on them before dismembering their bodies and disposing of them in garbage bins.
The killings went undetected for months until a man looking for scrap metal in a bin outside Skibicki’s apartment found partial human remains in May 2022 and called police. These remains were later identified as those of Rebecca Contois. More of her remains were discovered at a city-run landfill the following month. In police interviews, Skibicki admitted to killing Contois and three other women, revealing murders that authorities had not yet discovered.
Community Impact
Judge Joyal emphasized the profound impact the case has had on the entire Manitoba community, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous. The guilty verdict was a step towards justice, but the search for the remains of two of the victims, Marcedes Myran and Morgan Harris, continues. A formal search of a Winnipeg landfill is scheduled for this autumn after months of pressure from their families.
A Plea for Justice
Krista Fox, a family member of one of the victims, highlighted the broader significance of the verdict. "We, as First Nations people, are not statistics. Every single one of us has a name and a family that misses us dearly," she said.
Skibicki's lawyers argued that he was not aware of the severity of his actions due to schizophrenia, claiming he was hearing voices that instructed him to commit the crimes. However, prosecutors demonstrated that Skibicki was fully aware of his actions, which were "intentional, purposeful, and racially motivated." They supported this with DNA forensic evidence, surveillance footage, and testimony from Skibicki’s ex-wife, who detailed a history of physical abuse.
A Step Forward
The case has unearthed deep wounds within Canada’s Indigenous community, which has faced a high number of cases of missing and murdered women. Winnipeg, in particular, has been a focal point of this crisis. According to a 2019 inquiry, Indigenous women in Canada are 12 times more likely to be murdered or go missing than other women.
Despite the relief of the guilty verdict, many in the community, including Rebecca's brother, Jeremy Contois, continue to grapple with the senselessness of the violence. "Why did he have to do it?" he asked. "I wish I knew that."
As the community seeks healing, the focus remains on ensuring that such tragedies are not repeated and that justice continues to be served for all victims.

A lawyer who represented a number of churches across Canada fighting COVID-19 restrictions in court has been charged by police in Winnipeg after admitting in 2021 he hired a private investigator to follow senior government officials and the Manitoba judge who presided over one of the organization's cases.
The Winnipeg Police Service said it has charged John Carpay, 55, with intimidation of a justice system participant and the attempt to obstruct justice.
The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms said it learned on Friday of the warrant issued by Winnipeg police for the arrest of Carpay, president of JCCF when the allegations surfaced last year.
"This warrant was apparently issued in connection with the events that took place in 2021 and alleges obstruction of justice," the Alberta-based organization said in a statement posted on its website on Sunday.
Carpay immediately turned himself in to the Calgary Police Service after learning of the warrant, the statement said. [...]
Carpay's decision to hire a private investigator to follow Joyal, chief justice of what was then Manitoba's Court of Queen's Bench, came to light in July 2021 during a hearing for a case against pandemic rules brought forward by seven rural Manitoba churches who were represented by Carpay's organization.
Joyal told the hearing he had been tailed by a private investigator in an attempt to catch him breaking COVID-19 rules in order to embarrass him while he presided over the court challenge.
