I've seen a lot of discourse about the Switch 2, but I haven't really seen anybody echoing my concerns, so uh

Is this still for kids? For families? I feel like this was designed more for adult gamers than for all-ages. I already know of quite a few people (young and old) who complain about the switch being too big, and we're just. Making it bigger? And oh we're... taking away the colors and hiding them under joysticks? Huh...

And I've seen some chatting about the new joycon attachment method, and while after arguing some of you might conclude they're not as breakable as they seem, how well is that going to hold up in a kid's hands?

I know these are systems for everyone but Nintendo is the only company that is still making consoles explicitly kid-friendly, and if they stop, who's going to pick up the slack? Idk man I feel like the more spaces we take away from these kids, the more they'll be relegated to either elsagate slop or stuff that's intended for people wayyyyy older, and that we're going to go further and further into a "why are the kids like this??" hole. The loathed gen alpha slang doesn't come from brainrot, it comes from them adopting slang from places they shouldn't necessarily be. Twitch streams, unsupervised youtube, etc. And where else are they to go? When you recognize that all of the modern kid's shows are garbage, and that there aren't really games being made for them, and that third spaces are going away, where are you expecting they go? What are you expecting they do?

"What happened to kid's media? We used to have (show you really like)" while there are, yes, a lot of big awful capitalistic forces at play there, the answer is also in part likely you or someone you know. Through a lot of adult intrusion and demanding in kid friendly spaces, a divide slowly gets created, where mature quality stuff is for big kids/adults, and kids stuff is therefore forced into being slop. You think kids were complaining about the switch being too small? That kids weren't a fan of the default joycons being colorful? That kids were pressuring Nintendo into making the Switch 2 more Steam Deck-like? I'm sure there are outliers, but I can't imagine the vast majority, many of which already had problems, for example, with holding the (to them) massive Switch, wanted this.

And I know that this is Tumblr, and that while I think you guys are mixed on whether kid good or bad, you guys definitely aren't comprised of enough Gamers TM to a point where I can put the blame here. I just want to put this out there because I have seen a bit of chatter on here ignoring the kids, and I wanted to bring them to the table.

I'm late to the show and then some

I learned a full week late that the Nintendo Switch 2 had got its announcement trailer. So let's see:

Sturdy bases around the analogue sticks. Doesn't take Detective Peach to tell why it was needed. 🧚‍♀️

More sturdy SL/SR buttons. Convenient when on the go to avoid having to put on the straps every time.

An extra USB-C port for… Ethernet adapters on the go without needing a dock, I guess? A positive in my eyes.

More sturdy flip-stand. The one on Nintendo Switch was very flimsy, so that's a plus too.

Other than those it seems to have no relevant new functions whatsoever. It's more like a patch than an actual console.

I'll also keep an eye on how Nintendo will screw it up somehow, since in their minds the calendar still shows 2009. My guesses for outcomes I'd have bet money on at 3-to-1:

No 4K on TV.

Miis and/or Amiibos are no longer supported.

STILL no GameCube Virtual Console (I'd have bet cash money on that one).

The new connection snap-plugs break easily.

No Wi-Fi AX support.

Still no 1Gb/s Ethernet support.

Battery time is 4h00min or shorter.

No phone data support (I'd bet cash money on that too).

No 7.1 surround support (Keep in mind PS3 had that 19 years ago).

Doyoky Gamecube joycons are available on their website now! They say they’re gonna set up fast US shipping in May so I’ll wait a week or two before ordering. I’m attracted to it coming with a charge-capable joycon dock and having more accurate face buttons than the NYXI Wizard. I’ll probably pry the right one open and replace its C-stick like I did with the NYXI.

I guess I have to learn to repair my own game controllers and devices (switch right joy con and 3DS battery)

The 3DS battery isn’t a huge issue (I initially thought it was just a charging problem but uhhhh nope; the battery is indeed inflated so I gotta carefully dispose of it and buy a new battery, which I’m fine with but still ._.)

The switch right joy con however…

It’s not even drifting, nor is the left one. I’ve had these controllers for at least 3 years, and they’ve never drifted on me. No, it’s the R and/or ZR button being pressed randomly on its own and somehow pressing anything ranging from: the home button, the X button, the R button, and/or the + button.

I accidentally closed Splatoon 3 in the middle of a turf war. During SPLATFEST. (For those unaware, splatfest is a weekend-long competition to see which of three teams win based on a question; this one is Which day of the weekend is best? Friday, Saturday, or Sunday? Very competitive and limited time)

The home menu was brought up, the close game prompt popped up, and I accidentally pressed A instead of B and I’m still pissed about it. I almost want to not play the whole weekend which sucks because I’m on team Saturday and we got the most conch shells during the preview and that makes me want to play. But if I can’t use my weapon, throw bombs, or even open up the map without risking closing the game? Unplayable.

So now I have to figure out from various websites how to either fix the problem or replace parts myself (which I’ve never had to do since the switch is the only device I’ve had with this many issues) or replace the whole joy con. I’ll probably have to buy a new one if I can’t fix it myself because it’s not a drift issue, it’s a button issue.

I wish Nintendo wasn’t cheap in their production of the Nintendo switch joy cons. I get it, capitalism, maximize profits, all that, but if this many people still to this day have issues with your product and have been vocal about for literal years, (and the switch has been out since 2017) just release like… joy-con 2.0 or something, I don’t know.

I hope my brother is cool with lending me his pro controller once I get used to it. It feels like I’m gonna have to get into the tech renovation thing in order to fix my problems because updating controllers is literally impossible for me because they’re “up to date” all the time (ACNH joy cons btw) so any issues are on a physical level.

I just wanna play video games.
