News of Cabaret: It's official Cabaret goes to Broadway! We still have to wait to know if Eddie will reprise his role there.
"Award-Winning ‘Cabaret’ Revival Plans Spring Broadway Bow"
The production opened in London with Eddie Redmayne in a starring role; the New York cast has not yet been announced but he is expected to join it.
By Michael Pauson, New York Times, July 11, 2023
Willkommen, bienvenue, Broadway!
“Cabaret,” the ever-popular (and portentous) musical set in a Berlin nightclub on the eve of the Nazis’ rise to power, will return to Broadway in the spring in a new production that has already won raves in London.
The producing team on Tuesday morning announced a plan to transfer the show to Broadway, and said it would open at the August Wilson Theater, where a revival of “Funny Girl” is scheduled to close Sept. 3.
The “Cabaret” producers did not announce any other details, but it is widely expected that Eddie Redmayne, the film star who played the nightclub’s Master of Ceremonies when this revival opened in London, will reprise the role on Broadway. The show’s other big role, Sally Bowles, the nightclub’s star singer, was initially played in London by Jessie Buckley; that role has not yet been cast in New York.
“Cabaret,” with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Joe Masteroff, originally opened on Broadway in 1966, and that production, directed by Hal Prince and starring Joel Grey, won eight Tony Awards, including for best musical, and ran for three years. Grey went on to star in a 1972 film adaptation that won eight Academy Awards, including one for Grey and one for his co-star, Liza Minnelli.
The musical was revived on Broadway in 1987, again with Prince directing and Grey as the Emcee. Then in 1998, a new production directed by Sam Mendes and starring Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson, came to Broadway; that production closed in 2004 and then returned in 2014 for another year, opening with Michelle Williams opposite Cumming.
This latest revival, directed by Rebecca Frecknall, opened in London in 2021, and won seven Olivier Awards, including one for best musical revival. Its run is continuing. The critic Matt Wolf, writing in The New York Times, called the production “nerve-shredding,” and said, “Frecknall pulls us into a hedonistic milieu, only to send us out nearly three hours later reminded of life’s horrors.”
The lead producers are Ambassador Theater Group, a British company that owns and operates theaters around Europe and the United States and has become increasingly active in producing on Broadway, and Underbelly, a British company closely associated with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
“Cabaret” will join multiple shows on Broadway this season that deal with antisemitism, among them “Just for Us,” a one-man show from the comedian Alex Edelman, which is now running, as well as “Harmony,” a musical by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman that is opening in the fall and “Prayer for the French Republic,” a play by Joshua Harmon, which is to open in the winter. Last season’s Tony-winning best play, “Leopoldstadt,” which closed earlier this month, and the winner of the Tony for best musical revival, “Parade,” which runs until Aug. 6, are also about antisemitism.

INTEREST CHECK & ACTIVITY CHANGES!
Don't worry, we haven't forgotten activity checks! Lindsey and I have been working behind the scenes at ironing out some changes to how we do activity checks, to give you guys a little more leniency while allowing us to stay on top of things with less stress / guilt.
Starting on Monday, May 8th, our activity requirements will be changing. Any account inactive for two weeks will be automatically unfollowed. Accounts that are inactive for one week, display inconsistent activity and/or are not replying to open starters will be warned. Checks will be done twice a month -- once at the beginning/end, and once in the middle. That should give people plenty of time in between and also a little more structure. I will have a more detailed post on this on Monday, as well as adjusting our rules then, so if you have any questions, please ask!
Another thing that we are introducing at this point in time is our 'extended reserve for future use' section, in which players can now reserve one face that they plan on developing a character around. Only one, however! We don't want to encourage face hogging, and if a significant amount of time passes, we will reach out to check and see if you're still moving forward with said character. We know (from our own current experiences!) that it can sometimes take much, much longer than one week to properly research and develop a character, and want to extend that courtesy to our writers.
So! To get everyone on the same page and with a fresh, clean start, we are giving everyone this weekend to contact us and interact with this post. If you are good to go, just like it, we'll cross you off the list and your roles are yours. If you need to drop or swap, or pause anyone, or make any changes, let us know! Happy to help.
PLEASE LIKE THIS POST TO ACKNOWLEDGE YOU'VE READ IT AND WOULD LIKE TO KEEP YOUR ROLES!

Actor Joshua Malina Becomes New Co-Host Of Unorthodox Podcast
Host of the podcast PR After Hours, Alex Greenwood, recently penned an article called The Power Of Niche In Podcasting.
In the article, Greenwood writes, "One of the remarkable aspects of niche podcasts is their ability to build vibrant communities around specialized interests. These shows bring together people with a shared passion, fostering discussions, debates, and connections among like-minded individuals."
That's exactly what the podcast Unorthodox accomplishes. Niche doesn't necessarily mean small in number, but instead a specific community of listeners. Unorthodox bills itself as, "the universe’s leading Jewish podcast." That hyperbole aside, the podcast delivers on its boastand even delivers on its tagline that "you don't have to be Jewish to enjoy it."
Podcasting for a very specific audience does have its trap doors and moral conundrums. Consider how discovery material from the Dominion lawsuit against Fox News uncovered how hosts didn't believe the propaganda about election fraud they pushed on their audience. In essence, Fox News decided to pander rather than risk exposing the truth and alienating its audience.
Thankfully, Unorthodox is a thinking person's podcast. It doesn't want listeners to nod in mindless agreement. Instead, it would like listeners to scratch their heads and embrace complexity, ambiguity, and diversity of opinion. To prove that point, the podcast has a "gentile of the week" segment.
To demonstrate that Unorthodox continues to grow and improve, Tablet Magazine has announced that Joshua Malina, whose breakout role was in the beloved presidential television drama The West Wing, will be joining the Jewish publication’s popular podcast, Unorthodox. He will join current hosts Stephanie Butnick and Liel Leibovitz. Malina’s first episode as co-host will be available to stream and download on May 25, wherever you get your podcasts, and on the Unorthodox website.
Unorthodox, which has been airing weekly since 2015, has a passionate audience of tens of thousands of listeners, who call themselves the J-Crew. Each episode features a segment called News of the Jews, as well as interviews with both a Jewish guest and Gentile of the Week. Previous guests have included actors Nick Kroll, Kathryn Hahn, David Duchovny, and Clive Owen; food personalities Molly Yeh, Jake Cohen, and Adeena Sussman; spiritual leaders Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, Father James Martin, Swami Tyaganada; designers Jonathan Adler, Isaac Mizrahi, and Rebecca Minkoff; comedians Judy Gold, Alex Edelman, and Zarna Garg; writers Gabrielle Zevin, Nick Hornby, and Zibby Owens; elected officials including Joe Lieberman, Jared Polis, and Katie Porter. Over the years, Unorthodox has become required listening across diverse Jewish communities worldwide, and has also become assigned listening in rabbi-led conversion classes. Building on their reputation as conveners of thoughtful and fun Jewish conversation, the show’s co-hosts published a best-selling book in 2019, titled The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia: From Abraham to Zabar’s and Everything In Between. Responding to calls for high-quality Jewish audio content, the team behind Unorthodox launched Tablet Studios in 2020, producing such acclaimed podcasts as Dara Horn’s Adventures With Dead Jews; Radioactive: The Father Charles Coughlin Story, produced in association with WNET; and Gatecrashers, a podcast about the history of Jews in the Ivy League
Upon graduation from Yale University with a B.A. degree in Theatre, Joshua Malina made his professional acting debut in the Broadway production of A Few Good Men, written by Aaron Sorkin. Joshua went on to star as Jeremy Goodwin in Sorkin’s critically-acclaimed television series Sports Night. He worked with Sorkin once again on The West Wing, joining the cast in the fourth season, as Will Bailey. On the big screen, he has appeared in Bulworth, In the Line of Fire, and A View from the Top, among others. More recently, Joshua starred as U.S. Attorney General David Rosen in ABC’s hit show Scandal, and President Siebert in The Big Bang Theory. This is not Malina’s first foray into podcasting: Together with Hrishikesh Hirway, he hosted the hit PRX show The West Wing Weekly. More recently, he was the co-host, with Rabbi Shira Stutman, of PRX’s Chutzpod! Co-host Stephanie Butnick is co-founder of Tablet Studios and has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. She is also the author, together with Liel Leibovitz and Mark Oppenheimer, of The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia: From Abraham to Zabar’s and Everything in Between.
Co-host Liel Leibovitz is co-founder and editorial director of Tablet Studios as well as the host of Take One, a daily podcast about the Talmud. A contributor to a host of publications, including The Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, Commentary and First Things, he’s the author of several books, including biographies of Leonard Cohen and Stan Lee, and, most recently, the editor of Zionism: The Tablet Guide. “There’s a term in linguistics called cooperative overlapping, which basically means excitedly interrupting each other,” said Butnick and Leibovitz. “It’s how Jews speak, and we very much look forward to cooperatively overlapping with Joshua Malina. We’ve been his fans for years, and think that his passion and commitment to being a loud and proud Jew will bring a new and joyful spirit to the show.” New episodes of Unorthodox are released every Thursday on all platforms where you listen to podcasts. You can learn more about Unorthodox and Tablet Magazine by visiting TabletMag.com.
Finally, in the course of doing this article, I listened to several episodes, and one of my recent favorites is episode # 358 in April with podcast expert Arielle Nissenblatt and Andrea Wakefield on Italian American cooking. This episode combines two of my great passions -- podcasting and Italian food.
In the interview, Nissenblatt -- who may not sleep since she's so busy -- mentions my favorite, underappreciated podcast, Mobituaries with Mo Rocca. Listeners should also check out Nissenblatt's podcast recommendation website, EarBuds Podcast Collective, and the Trailer Park podcast, where anyone can submit their podcast trailer for review.
The interview with Nissenblatt reveals how the tenor of the podcast reflects the culture of its listeners. While interviewing Nissenblatt, the co-hosts comment that a Jewish podcast always operates at a sped-up rate, with interruptions and people talking over each other.
And that's exactly what happened. While interviewing Nissenblatt about her fascinating journey in podcasting, there was fast talk, interruptions, and multiple people talking. Such sonic chaos would be corrected by any self-respecting podcasting trainer. Yet, miraculously, this cultural dissonance works and even sparkles.
Malina is a thoughtful, reflective man who will add to the depth of the podcast. He's not a vacuous, self-absorbed actor with little going on upstairs when he doesn't have lines to read. He will definitely add to the mishegoss (Yiddish for craziness). He joins the podcast on March 25th.
I also recommend Tablet Magazine. It's high-level journalism, and it doesn't matter what religion or ethnic background you are.

BIOGRAPHY:
As soon as Malachi had been born, he knew that it was his destiny to follow in his father’s footsteps. The eldest son of one of the biggest crime bosses in New York City, he had an idyllic childhood – he had great friends, played soccer and baseball, and anything he wanted his parents gave to him. It wasn’t until he was a teenager that he learned of his father’s true profession – as far as he, and the rest of the world, was concerned, Gabriel Edelman was a successful investor that had amassed his fortune by making wise and lucrative investments. When he turned thirteen years old, his father sat him down and told him the truth – that he was his heir to an important dynasty and that it was important that he learned what that meant. In addition to his schooling and extracurricular activities, his father ensured that Malachi learned a few other things would become important later in life – like how to fight and how to shoot a gun – and by the time that Malachi graduated from high school, he was capable of killing with both his hands and a firearm.
Of course, his schooling didn’t end there. Going to college was important, so that he could get a business degree to inherit his father’s job, and it was there that he met Jessica. She was beautiful – a blue-eyed, blond-haired bombshell that looked like the picture perfect trophy wife. By all accounts, he should have wanted her desperately, but he knew that he didn’t – he much preferred the company of men, using his words to degrade and humiliate them as he used their bodies how he saw fit – and he really, truthfully, only pursued her because he knew that it would look good on paper. And boy, did it make his dad happy. Especially when, in just under a year, Jessica was welcoming a baby boy, an heir to Gabriel’s heir, and Malachi knew that it was important that he try to keep his little family together. If only to ensure that his father was happy and wouldn’t recall his naming him as heir.
But when his boy turned six, one of his father’s enemies had managed to kidnap his son – picking him up from school in an attempt to hold him hostage and for ransom – and Malachi was quick to go after the men that did it. He didn’t even try to talk to them, no, he fought his way through the warehouse that they were holding him in and once they were all taken care of, he grabbed his son and headed home. Of course, when Jessica saw a bloodied and bruised Malachi returning with a frightened son, she realized that perhaps she got in over her head. And a week later, she took their son and left. This angered him, but it made his father infuriated and Gabriel insisted that Malachi find Jessica and return his son to him. And, for over a year, Malachi used his resources and connections to track them down, using Jessica’s bank accounts to follow their movements. But when it was obvious that there was no way that Jessica was going to come back… Malachi decided instead that he should show her that he understood why she left, and he began to leave thousands of dollars in her bank account every few months so that she could raise their child comfortably.
This wasn’t something that satisfied his father, though, and Malachi knew that it was imperative that he find a new wife and have more children. And that’s what he did. Marrying his new wife, Elizabeth, he fathered two more children – first a daughter and then another son – but that didn’t stop him from giving into his indulgences. Between hooking up with the son of one of his father’s legitimate business partners at various business gatherings or prowling gay bars to hook up in the stalls of a bathroom, Malachi wasn’t exactly hiding his sexuality – just to his father, to his wife, to his business and to the mafia. And while his father is getting up there in age and allowing Malachi to assume more and more responsibility over the family business, Malachi is still only second in command and that meant he had a little more free time than he would once he assumed his father’s mantle. And what better way to use his free time than to go to the Haus of Perses?
It was easy for him to hear about the Haus. With so many connections around the world, his father had connections to the Blackwell family – as well as the King family – and eventually, the Blackwells heard about Malachi’s extracurricular activities and extended an invite. For years, Malachi visited the Haus every so often, but after the Kings, who arguably his family had closer ties to than the Blackwells, bought out the Haus, he’s decided that perhaps he should check it out more frequently and see what changes the Kings have made to the business. And what new staff they might have there, too.

In 1598, following in the tradition of previous Popes, Pope Clement VIII ruled that no Christian could be treated by a Jewish Doctor, thus barring Christians from seeking treatment from any Jewish Physician. Bear in mind that virtually every Pope in history had had a personal Physician who was Jewish. In May 2020, the so-called 'Palestinian Leadership' ruled that no 'Palestinian' could be treated for COVID-19 using equipment sent by the UAE that had landed on Israeli soil. Bear in mind that virtually every 'Palestinian Leader' (or a member of their family) had at some point received potentially life-saving treatment in an Israeli Hospital. This is the vile hypocrisy of Antisemitism. COVID-19, like Ebola, Dengue, Smallpox and Sars before it, will eventually fade into the background, with a potential vaccine at hand to combat it should it reoccur. Sadly, there is no known cure (or vaccine) for Antisemitism. 80 years ago, it went unchecked, and killed over 6 million men, women and children. NEVER AGAIN * For those who are finding it difficult to read the (very long) list of Jewish Nobel Prize Winners in the Medical Field on our meme, here it is. A few people have asked why Jonas Salk, who discovered the Polio vaccine is not on the list. Sadly (and totally unjustly), Salk was never awarded a Nobel Prize :

How Last Year's Surprise First 2 Week Top Scorers Ended Up
We're at the point in the year when everyone is hyping up players who had a great week 1 and 2, and debating how they will end up.
Keep in mind this is data from one year, and is only a small sample and 2 weeks instead of 1. For example, just because no RBs who were Boom picks and drafted as a RB3 finished outside a RB3 dosen't mean it won't happen this year.
Here are the WR's who Boomed the first 2 weeks and finished as a WR3 or better
Rank Player Points Finish Draft 1 Calvin Ridley 47.8 4 25 3 D.K. Metcalf 30.7 5 26 4 Stefon Diggs 29.9 3 24 5 Robby Anderson 28.4 27 60 12 Terry McLaurin 24.6 23 27 20 Corey Davis 19.7 29 75
Here are the WR's who Boomed the first 2 weeks and finished as a WR4 or worse.
Rank Player Points Finish Draft 9 John Brown 27.2 76 (38) 33 10 Julian Edelman 25.9 110 (53) 36 11 Darius Slayton 25.5 56 45 15 Keelan Cole Sr. 22.5 49 100 16 Russell Gage 22 40 73 16 Marquez Valdes-Scantling 22 44 94
Here are the RB's who Boomed in the first 2 weeks and finished as a RB3 or better
Rank Player Points Finish Draft 9 Kareem Hunt 30.2 10 33 6 Raheem Mostert 37.8 47 (12) 26 12 James Robinson 27 7 59 12 Melvin Gordon III 27 13 34
Here are the RB's who Boomed in the first 2 weeks and finished as a RB4 or worse
Rank Player Points Finish Draft 11 Malcolm Brown 27.7 45 60 18 Jerick McKinnon 24.1 40 65 20 Joshua Kelley 23.3 63 57
Key Rank The rank they finished in the first 2 weeks respective of their position. Player Player's Name Points How much they scored the first 2 weeks Finish The rank they finished the season with respective to their position (number in parentheses is how they would have finished if they completed a full season. Only used for players who missed 3 or more games) Draft How they were ranked pre season
Key Points
2/6 of the WR's and 1/4 of the RBs drafted outside the top 36 of their position last year ended up as a WR3/RB3 or better
4/6 of the WR's and 3/3 of the RB's drafted inside the top 36 of their position last year ended up as a WR3/RB3 or better
If anyone knows of any hype posts for any players listed, from the first 2 weeks of the 2020 season, let me know. I'll add them to my post. Ones I found myself are already linked.
