The Ordinary World

Where the story begins. Hero is a lesser version of themselves. May conform to societal norms or family expectations but knows deep down that there's more to life.

Call to Adventure

Hero is summoned. Delves deep into fears or the unknown. Must let go of what is familiar.

Refusal of the Call

Fears, insecurities, unwillingness to change. Hero's journey is both an internal and external adventure.

Meeting with the Mentor

Hero encounters a mentor that gives them guidance, wisdom, insight. Someone that helps them along their journey.

Crossing the First Threshold

Hero goes from ordinary world to special world. Can be a metaphor or literal. Beginning of self-discovery. Point of no return.

Tests, Allies, Enemies

Hero learns rules of new world. Challenges, war, conflicts. In this part of the journey, the hero is tested in preparation for what lies ahead.

Approach to the Innermost Cave

Can be an actual location or inner conflict. Hero descends into hell to save a loved one or fights a dragon for its treasure. Breakthroughs bear reward and growth.

The Ordeal

Hero faces inner crisis or hits rock bottom. Only in death can the hero be reborn. Metaphorical or literal resurrection. Grants power or insight. High point of hero's story. Everything is put on the line.

The Reward

Hero is given a physical object, knowledge, or love. Inner change.

The Road Back

Decision to return to ordinary world. Further tests, dangers. Unconquered villain goes after hero.

Resurrection

Peak danger in the hero's journey. Threat is to not only hero but world. All lessons learned are used here. Realization that they had the power within them all along.

The Elixir

Hero returns to ordinary world with new understanding. Change can now be implemented in life going forward. Unless something is brought back from The Ordeal, hero is likely to to repeat the adventure until lessen is learned.

He joined a revolutionary movement and was incarcerated a number of times by monarchist authorities.

Definitely sounds like a victim! Must have been a good guy!

Of course most people remember him as Joseph Stalin, one of the most notorious mass-murderers and autocrats in history. He was responsible for the forced starvation of millions, ethnic cleansing, genocide, industrialized incarceration and torture, and the brutal occupation of conquered peoples.

Wait…but now he sounds like an oppressor!!!!! Which is he????? Why is the world so complicated??????

Azula was abused. Ozai probably did not have a warm and cuddly childhood either. No doubt Sozin, Azulon, and Long Feng have some element of a tragic backstory. But each of them chose to do evil, and the more evil you do the harder it is to see any other way and redeem yourself.

That’s why Ozai will probably never turn his life around, while Azula certainly still can like Zuko and Iroh.
