Day 31: Jang Gye-hyang!
Jang Gye-hyang was born into a noble Korean family during the Joseon Dynasty. Her father, a prominent Neo-Confucian scholar, allowed his young daughter to sit in while he was teaching students; soon, she was sneaking into his study to read philosophy texts, and became a gifted poet as well.
Her parents arranged a marriage for Gye-hyang to a widowed family acquaintance; he and Gye-hyang would have seven children, and she was also a devoted stepmother to his two elder children. They settled into a small estate in the mountains. She was noted for her compassion - housing refugees during the 1636 Qing invasion, and planting orchards to feed the poor.
As she aged, Gye-hyang compiled favorite recipes into a cookbook - possibly the first cookbook ever written in Korea's Hangul script. Chinese characters were still the script of choice for academic works in Korea, but Hangul, developed in the 1400s and then banned by several succeeding kings, was undergoing a renaissance. Gye-hyang was a skilled Hangul calligrapher, and the script was the obvious choice for a book meant to be handed down in her family.
Gye-hyang died in 1680, a respected matriarch. Centuries later, her book, the Eumsik Dimibang, was rediscovered. Its recipes, including not only ingredients but detailed cooking instructions, proved a valuable insight into the history of Korean food - and an opportunity for twentieth and twenty-first century cooks to enjoy Joseon cuisine.

The Forbidden Marriage
Oh-kay. So here I am again, having fallen into the rabbit-hole of KDramaland courtesy of “The Forbidden Marriage”.
I recall hearing about this drama sometime last year and was a bit interested but I didn’t really watch it when it aired. Based on the plot, I figured it would be something that I would rather watch when all episodes have aired. That was a good decision, coz when I started, I could hardly drop it.
Some dramas just get a hold of you from the get-go, without rhyme or reason. Their plot might be overused and full of tropes. Or they might be long, drawn-out historical dramas. Or they could be highly-acclaimed and very well acted ones with a beautiful story. Regardless, it’s not really easy to pinpoint why you love them, but you do anyway.
“The Forbidden Marriage” gives the viewer a hokey, cheesy, and over-the-top introduction of its heroine, So Rang. She’s a swindler who gets into all sorts of fraudulent gigs just to earn a living. She works with an old man named Gwaeng Yi, who’s supposed to be some sort of medium/fortune-teller. After having earned a good sum of money, they go to Hanyang and decide to set up a tea house. But it isn’t an ordinary tea house.
Having heard of the marriage ban that the court had imposed on the nation while the King tries to find a new queen after his first wife died, So Rang decides to take it upon herself to help those who want to get married but unable to do so upon pain of death. The people of Joseon are already threatening violence because of the edict: their marriages are put on hold and in those days, marriages were very important to establish good connections, a livelihood, and succession planning to ensure that one’s wealth is secured.
Unfortunately, the King hasn’t selected a new queen even if 7 years had already passed since his first wife died when he was just Crown Prince. He had been very much in love with his Crown Princess and her sudden death broke his heart. She was alleged to have committed suicide, yet he knew she had been murdered by his enemies.
When So Rang comes into his life and pretends to be able to summon his beloved princess' soul so he could speak to her, the King decides to keep her by his side constantly. Yet So Rang finds that for all the deception she's been doing to earn money, she gets to know the man behind the king, and she finds herself loving him for himself and wanting him to love her for her true self as well. But how will she do that without revealing her deceit and risking the loss of his trust - and her life - in the process?
It's a fun romp and the actors playing the King and So Rang have amazing chemistry. Kim Young-dae plays the role of King Lee Heon while So Rang is portrayed by Park Ju-hyun. I enjoyed it very much and it got me back into KDrama.

Does anyone know if there is an unofficial translation of The Forbidden Marriage (or Joseon Marriage Ban, or just No Marriage) anywhere that goes past chapter 46? I have been searching and I cannot find it anywhere! From what I have read, the person translating it stopped after finding out who the FL marries in the end.
I have tried everything, Naver was the publisher but there isn't an official English translation. I even tried reading the French translation but my French is not strong enough for that. I would pay for it if I could!
I just want to read it :(

Last song you listened to: I Love Rock 'N Roll by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Last time we went out we took my car so I was in control of the music and I played Never Gonna Give You Up, and then the spousal person wanted to know what other songs would play if you just let Apple Music go from there. It was all 80s pop and not other meme songs like he was hoping, so I found an 80s rock playlist for the good stuff. :)
Last movie you watched: I don't know. Probably the rewatch of Train to Busan? We haven't watched a movie in forever. If we watched one fairly recently it would have been a horror movie on Halloween, and I know we rewatched Train to Busan for that either last year or the year before.
Last movie we saw in theaters was Parasite, before the plague.
Currently reading: There's a book at my computer but honestly I've been playing Sims instead of reading. Does reading mainstream-ish forums in an attempt to understand humans count?
Currently watching: LOL. Let's see if I can remember everything.
May I Help You is our current completed show that we're watching. Currently airing ones: Brain Works, the second season of Poong, the Joseon Psychiatrist, The Forbidden Marriage, Crash Course in Romance, and...I think that's it for now?
Of those the one I'd most recommend to others is The Forbidden Marriage. This weekend is the last two episodes I think. Basically there's a king of Joseon and evil people keep killing his women, including the crown princess, so there's been a marriage ban for 7 years. A conwoman who survived her evil step-mother's attempt to kill her is sent to the palace to try and help the king get over the crown princess and find a queen and lift the marriage ban. As you may guess, the conwoman ends up being the best candidate for queen, at least according to the king. Her evil step-mother disagrees.
Currently craving: My after work snack! It's three hours or so away still though.
I tag anyone who sees this and wants to do it for some reason. :)

Joseon Era Namseok
--Namseok Prompt
Namjoon is the son of an important family, very rich, very high social standing. When he gets older he'll be set to continue the family bloodline, inherit the money, do important stuff.
Hoseok, on the other hand, is poor. His family have to scrape by and often go hungry because they don't have money.
But despite these vast differences, the two of them meet as kids and become fast friends. Namjoon smuggles food to Hoseok all the time. They play together in secret. And they grow up together and... Well, let's just say it's not exactly platonic, but maybe Namseok haven't figured that out yet.
They're about 17-18 years old when Namjoon’s father finds out about them and bans Namjoon from ever seeing Hoseok again. He puts Namjoon under house arrest. When Namjoon does go out, he must be chaperoned at all times (let's just say even though Namseok may not have figured out they're a little more than platonic, Namjoon’s father isn't blind. And he's not happy about what he sees). He also gets Hoseok's family sent away from the city, effectively separating Namseok by hundreds of miles. For all Namjoon knows, Hoseok could be dead. He's only told they're gone and he'll never see his "friend" (*wink wink*) again.
And so years pass. Namjoon grows up. He's a scholar, he studies diligently, he's all set to get married and do all that stuff straight people in the olden days did.
Until one night he takes a stroll through the city streets. He likes to do this to clear his head. That's when he sees the posters for a performance that's taking place and he hears the crowd and the beat of drums. And so he pays and goes in because why not? He has time to kill.
He manages to get himself a place quite close to the front, but not so close that he's conspicuous or anything like that. He likes to be just in the middle. Not really an important detail, but anyway—When he gets there the performance has already begun and it's good, he likes it. He's always enjoyed this kind of thing.
He catches a glimpse of one of the performers faces. And it's Hoseok. Grown up, ethereal, beautiful Hoseok. Like... 😌fiiiiine Hoseok, yanno what im sayin’? You've seen him dance, I don't need to go into detail.
Hoseok sees Namjoon too and their eyes meet and they share this moment of recognition, but Hoseok doesn't falter in his dance. And so Namjoon is sort of left in agony the whole performance wondering if Hoseok really keeps looking at him or if it's just his imagination.
BUT THEN the performance is over and people are filtering away, and Namjoon is just waiting, waiting for Hoseok to reappear because if Hoseok doesn't reappear Namjoon may have to tear apart every building in the city to find him. You know, just normal platonic friendship things.
He's craning his neck, very undignified and desperate-looking, at the front of the stage when someone taps him on the shoulder and he turns and oh my god, Hoseok is as tall as him and he's still dressed in his outfit from the performance. And they just hug so hard (in a totally platonic way. Totally) and they spend the whole night talking even though Namjoon is supposed to go home, but who cares about home when Hoseok is right in front of him again???
They tell each other all about their lives and what's been going on since they were separated. Hoseok's parents have passed, but he and his siblings have thrived. He, in particular, has clearly thrived. He's been travelling with the performers for a few years now.
And... well... Namjoon has to break the news to Hoseok that Namjoon is gonna get married soon. Some arranged marriage to a woman he doesn't care for. Honestly, Namjoon’s life hasn't changed that much—he's still in the same place he was when they were separated. Under his father’s thumb.
Hoseok looks positively heartbroken to hear this news, but neither of them acknowledge that. And Hoseok just tells Namjoon he's going to be in the city for another month performing, so Namjoon should come visit whenever he can.
Of course Namjoon does, that's his very extremely platonic no homo bro bestie. He goes to see him EVERY NIGHT. And the long and the short of it is, about halfway through the month they do a little something-something that's not very platonic of them…And the next day Hoseok says Namjoon should run away with him when the performers leave the city. And Namjoon says he can't. And so there's pain and angst and they fall out. The performers leave. Namjoon's wedding is just around the corner. And he just realises he's the biggest idiot in the world. Like why is he marrying some random woman when the person he wants is Hoseok? Pure dumbassery.
And so he chases after Hoseok. And then he runs away with the performers and it's cute and they live happily ever after and stuff.

Yo we're about to switch from Don't Starve to Kdrama reviews and maybe Sims4 stuff for awhile so if you wanna hop off now I will not be offended.
Anyway, shows I've been watching lately! The King's Affection, Joseon Marriage Agency, and the first episode of Homme Fatale. And of course, my nth rewatch of The Good Place. I've got my mother hooked on it, too! Below are my thoughts on The King's Affection.
The King's Affection - I think I got about halfway through this series. It's not that I'm definitely not gonna finish it, but I've kinda lost interest in the last few episodes.
CW: Child death, public executions, suicide, murder, sexism, childbirth, torture, light gore, and probably other's I've forgotten or haven't got to yet.
Summary: Because twins are banned in Joseon, the King orders the Crown Prince to kill the younger, girl twin his wife just gave birth to. With the help of her trusted bodyguard, the Crown Princess fakes the girl's death and sends her into hiding. Many years later, the boy twin dies, and the girl twin must disguise herself to take his place.
Thoughts: starts off very sad, with the death of multiple children. The first episode is pretty emotionally rough. The second episode lightens considerably in tone, but the series is pretty dark overall. I love the main character, Lee Whi, who is hot has heck crossdressing as a man. The main love interest, a royal tutor, is sweet, cute, and very likable. He's quite smart and uses his wits to help him survive the palace and win the favor of the King, though he'd much rather be working at his health clinic. He also falls in love with Lee Whi when he thinks she's a man, and freaks out a little bit but then takes it in stride, which is endearing.
The second main love interest.... is Lee Whi's cousin. So that's a bit rough. He is loyal and the kinda of politely deranged character that I love. Everytime I feel sad that his love is unrequited, I remind myself... they're cousins. Don't feel too bad.
They kill off the mother (the current queen) fairly quickly and with no lead up. Just, Lee Whi is learning to be a boy and the crown prince, and then it's a quick cut to the mother dying. I had to rewind to find if I missed something. Nope, it's just a plot device to show that Lee Whi is almost completely alone.
I stopped watching because... at some point, all Lee Whi does is cry. Which is fair! She's losing everything! But the middle episodes are so steeped in misery, I didn't want to keep watching.
There is also some minor issues with the side characters being hurt for plot devices; you see their affect on the character and on Lee Whi but by the end of the episode you couldn't tell they had been hurt.
I very much like the Prince's bodyguard, who is silent and brooding and quietly loyal but! There's a twist. Might go back to watching just for him, tbh.

Park Joo-hyun ♥ Kim Young-dae, love accomplished
Tumblr media
Park Joo-hyun and Kim Young-dae made love.
In the last episode of the MBC Friday/Saturday drama 'Golden Marriage, Joseon Marriage Ban' (script Cheon Ji-hye, director Park Sang-woo, Jung-hoon, hereinafter referred to as 'Golden Marriage') broadcast on the 21st, many people, including So-rang (Park Joo-hyun) and Lee Heon (Kim Young-dae), fell in love. achieved
Sorang asked Lee Heon, "How did you know my name?" Lee Hun said, "Shin Won told me the other day." Heon Lee then asked, "Can I continue to call you Sorang?" So-rang replied, "I like it a lot too," and confessed, "I can't believe that such a wonderful person will become my husband."
Just as the two entered the residence and were about to talk more, the Great Queen Mother (played by Cha Mi-kyung) appeared. When the Queen Mother asked, "What are you two doing at this late hour?", Lee Heon replied, "I was going to leave now after the conversation." Then, the queen mother said, "Then, Crown Princess, come with me," embarrassing the two of them. According to etiquette, the two were forced to stay apart for 40 days. When Lee Heon asked again in surprise, she scolded the Great Queen Mother, saying, "The people have waited 7 years, but can't they just wait 40 days?"
Her primordial daughter (played by Hwang Jung-min) was brought back into her palace to educate her son-in-law. She was bored with Sorang the whole time the primeval was educating her Sorang. In response, the virgin burst into laughter at her unchanging appearance.
Sejang (played by Lee Hyeon-geol) went to her maiden and proposed to her, "Stop flirting. It seems that there is nothing in between us now."
On the other hand, Ye Dae-gam was punished to fall back home and self-restraint. Ye Hyeon-hee was forced to work for the rest of her life, and Mrs. Seo was sentenced to prison.
Sorang asked Lee Heon to extend maternity leave for those who worked in the palace. After hearing Sorang's opinion, Lee Heon ordered, "Regardless of your status, we will increase the 7-day maternity leave to 100 days." Subsequently, he allowed marriage to the women who had fallen from the crown prince's house. Hwa-yoon (played by Jo Su-min) and Lee Shin-won fell in love after meeting each other under the plan of Lee Heon and So-rang.
Hoe-gae (Choi Deok-moon) accidentally runs into the man she once loved on the street and falls in love again. People all found loved ones and lived happily ever after.
Jeong Do-seok drew all the people around him to prepare for his next work. Sorang asked, "What is the title of the new work, so that even His Highness is colonel?" The title of Jeong Do-seok's new work was Golden Spirit.

Whatever it takes, we are soo honoured and proud of you, Our DEAR LEE JONG SUK 👏🤞Thy well be done...🙏
[Naver] Anyway, the target is Lee Jong Suk? MBC Acting Awards 2nd Grand Prize
This year's MBC drama did not have a 'big hit' like last year's 'Red Sleeves', but the average viewer ratings and topicality increased. Among them, actor Lee Jong Suk is predicted to be a strong candidate for the grand prize.
The 2022 MBC Drama Awards will be broadcast live at 8:30 pm on the 30th.
Looking back at the MBC drama lineup in 2022, 'Tracer', 'Tomorrow', 'Showtime From Now', 'Doctor Lawyer', 'Big Mouth', 'Gold Spoon', 'One Hundred Butlers', 'Golden Spirit, Joseon Marriage' Ban', 'Secret House', 'Witch's Game', and 'Boar Hunt' met with viewers.
Recently, MBC has revealed the potential candidates for the award through a teaser video that begins with the phrase 'We invite you to the acting awards'. So Ji-seop, Lee Jong Suk, Kim Hee-seon, Park Hae-jin, Yook Sung-jae, Im Si-wan, Lee Hye-ri, and Choi Soo-young are the main characters.
In "Doctor Lawyer ", So Ji-seob played the role of Han Yi-han, a doctor who was falsely accused of causing the death of a patient, and Kim Hee-sun, who charismatically portrayed the role of a beautiful reaper with a story in "Tomorrow," stands out.
In 'Golden Spoon', Yook Sung-jae portrays Lee Seung-cheon, who is conflicted between his desire to have money and his poor but warm family, without a sense of difference. Expectations are gathering for grand prize winners such as Im Si-wan, who played Hwang Dong-joo and led the viewership rating to 9%.
The actor most likely to win the grand prize is Lee Jong Suk, who appeared in 'Big Mouth'.
'Big Mouth' was the only MBC drama this year to record double digit ratings. 'Big Mouth', which started with a national audience rating of 6.2%, ended with a rating of 13.7% and reaped the beauty of the end. It was also a hot topic, taking first place in TV topic in the Friday and Saturday drama category.
The main character, Lee Jong Suk, played the role of Park Chang-ho, a livelihood lawyer with a 10% win rate. He is a person who became involved in a murder case by accident and became the genius con artist 'Big Mouse' overnight. In order to survive and to protect his family, Park Chang-ho, who struggles to uncover the true face of the privileged class stained with a huge conspiracy, is delicately portrayed.
Lee Jong Suk led the turbulent play by showing various aspects of Park Chang-ho in a short period of time, from the incompetent and stressful life of a lawyer suffering from debt, to the way he was falsely accused and desperately screaming, and to the way he woke up to protect Miho.
If he receives the grand prize at the acting awards this time, he will be honored with the second grand prize. He won the grand prize at the MBC Drama Awards at the age of 28 in 2016 through the drama 'W'.
At the time, he played a unique setting called a character in a webtoon, and contributed to the success of the drama by expressing various characters such as Olympic shooting gold medalists, super conglomerates who own broadcasting stations, and national stars without a sense of separation.
In this 'Big Mouth', which he chose as his first work after being discharged from the call, he showed his potential with a flawless appearance. As expected by many, attention is focusing on whether Lee Jong Suk will receive the grand prize or the honor of being the second grand prize.

Ongoing Series Review: Joseon's Ban on Marriage
Tumblr media
Note: At the time of this review, I have read up to Chapter 10.
Joseon's Ban on Marriage takes place in a time where men and women could not freely meet and build their lives together. Unfortunately, it has become harder than ever to find a marriage partner in Joseon due to the marriage ban which was decreed after the death of King Lee Hun Man’s wife, the Crown Princess. Because the king has refused to get remarried, even after ascending the throne, the marriage ban has been dragged out for seven long years.
Because of the ban, this time has seen a rise in marriage swindlers, those who trick people by telling them they could officiate their weddings despite the marriage ban. One such swindler is Ye Sorang, a self-proclaimed unofficial matchmaker and well-known con artist. She is arrested by Lord Yi Shinwon, a close friend to the king and an interrogation officer, for defrauding the people of Joseon’s capital. In order to get out of jail, Sorang pretends she has spiritual powers and makes up a prophecy that the marriage ban will end this year or else there will be an uprising though not quite one you’d traditionally imagine. Despite being released, she is soon brought before the king who makes an otherworldly demand of her, or else, she will be executed for lying to his majesty. Just for how long will Ye Sorang be able to pull off this farce?
Joseon's Ban on Marriage has a very comedic feel to it and you can’t help chuckling at Sorang’s antics. However, you have to feel sad for the king. I’m sure it’s not like he wanted the marriage ban to drag on for this long, but he just can’t seem to move on with his life. Hopefully Sorang will be the one able to help him move on and find new love if she manages to survive long enough. I also have a feeling that Sorang has a past connection to Shinwon, but I’ll just have to continue reading to confirm. I look forward to seeing how Sorang will manage her growing list of lies and her interactions with the two male leads.
Thank you for taking the time to read this review! I hope you will check out Alice in Mangaland for more manga (and manhwa) reviews in the future! Arigato gozaimasu! Thank you!
