SEATTLE KRAKEN PLAYER PRIMER
I promised the beautiful @madroxed a Seattle Kraken current player primer so she can get into a West Coast (best coast) NHL team and then I went mad so it ended up too long for ask box without a read more. So here it is for your enjoyment, babe. 🦑
IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW:
1. When Kraken started playing their first season in 2021, there was a lot of discussion about the expansion plan, how many years they would take to become as successful as other expansion teams (cough VGK). That plan… has not fully panned out. So even though they made it to the playoffs last year, they're not super successful this season and likely won't squeeze their way into a wild card spot. This is okay because the Kraken are full of love.
2. This is important enough to say twice: THE KRAKEN PLAYERS ARE FULL OF LOVE. They don't need to be good if they're having fun and being friends! And they are!
3. Kraken has no captain right now, just four As. Democracy, baby! Every game there is tons of talk on reddit about how it's a good thing because it's made the guys closer, or how it's a bad thing because they don't have a leader and they keep losing. IDK, it's just our thing. There will be a C eventually.
4. There's a joke on tiktok that Kraken is a team of beautiful shy horses, treated badly on their last teams and now learning to love again. Keep this in mind when you see them interacting with Coach Hakstol. They all deserve to have their hooves (skates) farrier-ed gently, ribbons braided into their manes and to be tenderly fed sugar cubes. Anyways.
5. Haha, Seattle runs on love and tentacles.
THE OLDIES:
- Jordan Eberle (Jordy, Ebby, Ebs, Ebber) - Ebs was MY MAN for the longest time because I was soooo fond of him and the mid aughts pre-McDavid Oiler rookie crew. Now he's 33 years old, everyone calls him dad, and just had his 1000th game ceremony. It makes me verklempt.
He just signed a 2-yr contract this month, which people agree is mostly because of his role on the team and less because of his points (which are just okay).
He is also a noted Nickleback fan :(
Also, Jordan Eberle... naked... singing.
- Jared McCann (Canner, also Jordan's on-ice wife) - Kraken's lead scorer right now. Has the saddest backstory ever (he's had troubles with his teams since draft) but the Kraken team loves him. I love him too. Jordan was in his wedding party! Fun fact: Canner is the one who KISSED Ebs' head after an OT win this year, the organization framed & posted the picture, and it's the most romantic thing that has ever happened on Kraken ice. Recognized PC gamer boy. He also wears really really ugly hats with his game day suits.
- Philipp Grubauer (Grubi, The German Gentleman) - Gruuuuu. The more experienced goalie on the team. Noted horse girl (loves horses, there's a video all about his volunteer efforts with them). Gets a lot of undeserved shit from dude fans for being a conservative goalie, the man is NOT gonna move. He straight up close lined a player yesterday because they got too close to his crease lol.
- Vince Dunn - You already know this guy. Feral, but also submissive and breedable. I sent you the "screaming with a bloody face" vid but here's one where he drop gloves for a Matty hit and another from Juniors where he fights OFF ICE. His nickname is Dunner but because he's a pretty princess, he also goes by "Vincess" in hrpf. He's very popular this season both for his looks and his performance this season. Unfortunately injured right now due to a bad hit. Noted "gamer (fornite) boy" lol.
- Adam Larsson - You also know this guy. Big Cat. Quiet but a leader to the D rookies. Surprisingly funny - he's a silent prankster and the custom t-shirts this season with his face on it were a hit. Outside the hrpf space, he's engaged to a beautiful blonde Swede and about to be a dad this month.
- Jaden Schwartz (Schwartzy) - Peak millennial. Is it wrong that I think Schwartzy is the hottest Kraken after Vince? Because I don't care. He gives hot dad, with two dogs with girl names.
He changed his hockey number to match his sister's who died of cancer :'( Has been injured a lot this season and we miss him :'(
- Yanni Gourde (Gourdo) - FERAL!! FRENCH (CANADIAN)!!!! A tiktok star, sassy, charming, and also part of the team leadership.
Married and dad to little girls, who he has allowed Matty to babysit, if you can believe it. There was a super cute vid of them at the pumpkin patch this year. I'm a proud member of the GOURDO IS HOT club but even people with bad eyes and no love for goofy faces love Yanni.
- Andre Burakovsky (Burky) - You might remember him from his Cap or Av days. He's a beautiful little bird who is so good at scoring but so broken. The man has two Stanley Cups but he's played like 2 games for Kraken where he was both healthy & productive lol. People ship him with Gru sometimes in hrpf because they have cute nicknames for each other and also vacation together. He also just had a baby like two months ago so my sisters and I call him a teen mom even though he's like 29, lmaoo.
- Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (Belly) - His shirt is always off in every video I have ever seen him in. Handsome. Beard. French, like literally from France, but we won't hold it against him. He's an older guy who was brought in to help the team with offense (which we badly need).
- Oliver Bjorkstrand (Bjorky) - I always describe Bjorky as like a less handsome Dylan O'Brien if he played hockey. A chill, smiley dude who cares a lot. He played in Portland for the Winterhawks back in Juniors and I saw him a lot there! He's playing super well this year, he even was at the ASG!
THE YOUNG ONES:
- Matty Beniers (Matty, Benny) - OUR BEAUTIFUL FIRST DRAFT EVER. A baby boy. Ebs and Canner are his mom and dad. If you're on tiktok, he made that viral "Yes, Yes, Nope, Nope" sound while mic'd up.
He's growing up :') but also is having kind of a bad season :'( Part of the planned growth of the Kraken team though!
- Will Borgen (Borgy) - One of the baby D. He kinda looks like Canner but more frog. Matty and Borgy are roommates & pretty much BEST FRIENDS during the season. There's a lot of good locker room videos of them giving each other shit. He has also bullied Karts lol. Self describes himself as a little deer.
- Joey Daccord (Joey, Dacs) - Baby goalie. Gives the F1 recaps on tiktok. One of the biggest joys of my year so far was chanting "Joey" in the crowd after his shutout in the Winter Classic. Sometimes he strays too far from the net and makes boo boos. We love & cherish him.
- Kailer Yamamoto (Yamo, Yams, Yammer) - Little man. So little. Great at shootouts & stealing teammate's jerseys. He's the only Washingtonian on the team. Was a Oilers rookie and I've heard he featured in the whole Draisital hrpf narrative thing (idk I'm not an Oilers fan rn lol). Has a terrible goatee right now.
There's a funny af tweet about a reporter seeing a huge cheering section for him at a game and assumed it was friends & family but went over and it was just random people rooting for Yamo purely because he's short.
- Ryker Evans - The newest baby D. Has the deadest eyes you will ever see but he also spent an entire Firebirds youtube interview series just hanging out in a child's pool. He's played great since being called up from the Firebirds and we love him. So new he doesn't have a Breaking the Ice sheet yet :( Also his middle name is GARTH!
- Tye Kartye (Karts) - It's important that you know his last name is pronounced like "Cart-che" but even the announcers say "Car-ti-eh" like the jewelry brand. A quiet-ish sweetheart but also kind of spicy while playing. Rooms with Ryker. They're flirty and have been since the Firebirds. Scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game, during the Kraken's first ever playoffs!
- Cale (& Haydn) Fleury - REAL LIFE BROTHERS. Not actually related to Flower. Haydn is on the Lightning now and we miss him. Cale mostly plays for the Firebirds but he's developing well and has gotten called up several times this season.
- Ryan Winterton (Wints) - A goofy little baby. He's still playing mostly with the Firebirds but he had his NHL debut this season.
- Shane Wright - I don't actually know his nickname. (EDIT: I have been informed it is Shaner or Wrighter!) Big boy. Our SECOND DRAFT EVER. Playing with the minor leagues right now. We'll see him playing a line on Kraken next season or so, probably (?). If Coach Dave is willing.
THE OTHERS (THAT I OFTEN FORGET ABOUT):
- Brandon Tanev - Turbo. He's fast. Has beautiful long hair. Keeps getting hit by pucks because he's in the way. Fun fact: he helped start the 'Kraken are horses' thing because there was a video on Tiktok where an equipment manager was adjusting his skates and they used a hoof care video sound and it went viral. We might lose him when he's a free agent and that's fine.
- Jamie Oleksiak - Big Rig, Riggy. In my shit list right now because he's playing bad and I hate his stupid credit card commercial that they always play during games. Member of the 'my sister is prettier and a better athlete than me' club. People speculate there's a chance we might lose him over the summer when his no-trade clause opens up as well. He's often Borgy's d-partner, and he and Borgy are very very sweet though.
- Tomas Tatar - Tuna, he's fun and nice. I like his accent. Sometimes I forget he exists.
- Eeli Tolvanen - Tolvy. I also sometimes forget about him. Sorry. He's a buddy to everyone on the team though.
- Justin Shultz - Shultzy, he's fine. Gets injured a lot. Not the best player. I think we're gonna lose him eventually too.
- Brian Dumoulin - Dumo, he's also fine. He's won a couple Stanley Cups. Cute baby face for an older player but he gives a kinda empty brain, 'there's not a thought behind those eyes' feeling lol.
HOPE THIS HELPS. I ALSO HOPE THEY DON'T CRUSH THIS PRIMER OVER THE OFF SEASON WITH TRADES LOL but who knows. Whatever happens, happens. Just remember this team runs on love (and tentacles).

SortaSports' 2024-25 NFL Playoff Bracket (+ Wild Card Round Predictions)
Please tell me I don't jinx the right teams (It already hurt enough predicting we'll come one Eagles win away from a Lions-Vikings NFC Championship Game)
And as weird as this sounds, I'll give my picks for each round as they happen, just so I can keep my pick series going without one early upset nullifying all the other picks instantly. So...
LAC-HOU (#5 @ #4): Houston has been rife with enough problems to make the Apollo 13 crew feel safe, and not only have they been especially ugly as soon as they sealed the division, but Other L.A. has been so well-rounded this year. So I'd pick the Chargers to get their first playoff win with Justin Herbert, as well as Jim Harbough's fourth season out of five where he's won a playoff game (albeit 11 years after his last playoff win - it's weird, I know)
PIT-BAL (#6 @ #3): Pittsburgh's been imploding 2020-style lately and got spanked on the same field by Baltimore last time, so it feels like an easy win for the Ravens.
DEN-BUF (#7 @ #2): Denver's season has been magical, and even with them having done much of their damage against a mediocre schedule, I could see them giving Buffalo a good fight, especially with Bo Nix facing a less-than-stellar Buffalo defense. But ultimately, I think Josh Allen will again go off and the team will buckle down enough to give the Bills yet another chance to break everyone's hearts in the Divisional round.
GB-PHI (#7 @ #2): This was kind of tricky since not only has Jordan Love showed so much brilliance, but this Packers team has showed they can upset the NFC East winner as the lowest seed last year. But not only has the team been short on momentum lately, but Philly's might in all areas feels like exactly what the Eagles need to wash themselves of last year and start another good run, although I think they'll have to earn it.
WAS-TB (#6 @ #3): This was easily the hardest for me to predict. After a rollercoaster season, Tampa will have home-field and a strong offense led by Baker Mayfield. But I just have a feeling that red-hot rookie Jayden Daniels will follow up on what Stroud did last year by heroically leading the Commanders to their first playoff win in 19 years, although again, it's a tossup.
MIN-LAR (#5 @ v. #4): (First off, I really hope all of you in SoCal are staying safe. My heart goes out to all of you.) As exciting as the Rams' rollercoaster season has been, I still feel like the Vikings will brush off last week's humbling rout and take care of business to punch their ticket to the Divisional Round.
In other news, Campbell is practicing his gambling skills and Reid is testing how much dark magic he can use.

The Big Bang Theory universe is expanding again — while also returning to its sitcom roots — with Young Sheldon spinoff Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage (premiering Thursday, Oct. 17 at 8/7c on CBS). I’ve seen the first two episodes, and while the switch from single- to multi-cam may take a moment for some viewers to get accustomed to, especially those who came to Young Sheldon without a previous attachment to Big Bang, I’m here to tell you that the transition is seamless. After addressing the format change in a very meta cold open, the credits roll, and the story of Georgie Cooper and his new bride Mandy McAllister picks up almost immediately where Young Sheldon left off.
While Sheldon’s older brother was introduced on Young Sheldon, it was his first appearance on Big Bang, several months later, from which Georgie & Mandy’s premise derives. In that Season 11 episode, Georgie (played by Jerry O’Connell) confronted Sheldon about what life was like after their father died: Sheldon departed for Caltech, and 19-year-old Georgie was left to look after his mother Mary (Zoe Perry) and his younger sister Missy (Raegan Revord), which we now know he was doing while also supporting a family of his own.
Early episodes of Georgie & Mandy see the rookie tire salesman juggling the demands of being a husband, a father, a brother and a son-in-law, all while mourning the loss of George Sr., whose passing continues to be felt by everyone who knew and loved him. Episode 1 features a particularly touching moment between Georgie and his father-in-law Jim (Will Sasso) that the producers wisely let breathe, while Episode 2 checks in with latchkey kid Missy and shows us the extent to which Georgie’s newfound responsibilities are taking a toll on his mental health. (Wanna know the difference between a good multi-cam and a bad multi-cam? A good multi-cam trusts that its audience can handle a scene that forgoes punchlines in favor of grounded storytelling — something we’ve seen from every Chuck Lorre multi-cam since Mom.)
Montana Jordan is new to the sitcom format, but you’d never know it from his confident performance. He immediately feels right at home in front of a studio audience — which should come as no surprise to anyone who watched him blossom into a capable leading man in Young Sheldon’s final few seasons — and he more than holds his own opposite seasoned sitcom vets Emily Osment, Will Sasso and Rachel Bay Jones. Jordan and Osment’s crackling chemistry is on full display in the pilot, wherein the titular marrieds navigate a less-than-ideal move, and it begins to feel less and less like these two are only together due to the cards life dealt them. There’s genuine love between this unlikely couple, which makes the series’ title (and Georgie’s pre-established marital history) all the more intriguing. Osment, in particular, is great in Episode 2 as Mandy expresses concern for Georgie’s wellbeing.
Jones and Sasso — who worked with Lorre on United States of Al and Mom, respectively, before they were paired on Young Sheldon — relish in their expanded roles as Mandy’s parents. Jones is sublime as Georgie’s disapproving mother-in-law (though it’s my hope that they expand upon Audrey’s character and give her more to do outside of meddling in her daughter’s marriage), while Sasso gives off just the right amount of Big Dad Energy; it’s a hoot watching him walk on eggshells around Audrey, and a real delight watching him play off of Jordan as Jim does his best to step in for George Sr.
Perry, Revord and Annie Potts also get their fair share of screen time — though anyone expecting Mary, Missy and Meemaw to be as central to the plot as they were on Young Sheldon should be reminded that they are now all guest stars. Their presence in the first two episodes means there’s less time to flesh out the spinoff’s two new characters — Mandy’s brother Connor (now played by Dougie Baldwin), a quirky, underachieving musician who still lives under Jim and Audrey’s roof, and Ruben (Jessie Prez), a tire store employee who has worked for Jim for more than a decade and begrudges high-school dropout Georgie for already being further up the corporate latter than he is — though the actors show real promise, and each gets laughs in their respective scenes.
All told, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is a solid family comedy. It’s broad in style yet nuanced in its storytelling, and is made to appeal to all. Whether you’ve watched all or none of Big Bang and Young Sheldon, fell off after Big Bang, or were introduced to the franchise via Sheldon, there’s something here for everyone.
THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Anyone who felt that Young Sheldon ended too soon will be pleased to see that story continue (and be told so well) in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

The Ultimate Guide to Sports Trading Cards and Memorabilia - A Collector's Paradise
Sports trading cards have captivated fans and collectors for generations, blending a love for sports with the thrill of collecting. From basketball cards and soccer cards to autographed baseball and football memorabilia, the world of sports cards offers something for everyone. Whether you are a seasoned collector or just starting, understanding the different types of sports cards and memorabilia can help you make informed choices and build a collection you’ll cherish for years.
The Rise of Sports Trading Cards
Sports trading cards have a rich history dating back to the late 19th century when they were first included in cigarette packs to stiffen the packaging. As sports grew in popularity, these cards began featuring images of athletes, evolving into a booming hobby. Today, sports cards encompass a wide variety of sports, including basketball, soccer, and football, appealing to fans worldwide.
Basketball Cards: A Slam Dunk for Collectors
Basketball cards are among the most popular and valuable in the sports card market. With the rise of the NBA's global popularity, basketball trading cards have seen a surge in demand. Rookie cards of legends like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant are highly sought after and often command high prices at auctions. Recent rookies, such as Luka Dončić and Zion Williamson, have also become hot commodities, with collectors hoping their early cards will increase in value over time.
When collecting basketball cards, key considerations include the card's condition, rarity, and player popularity. Grading services like PSA or Beckett can authenticate and grade cards, providing collectors with assurance about a card’s condition and value. A well-maintained card can fetch significantly more in the market, making preservation a top priority.
Soccer Cards: Scoring Big with Global Appeal
Soccer, the world's most popular sport, naturally has a massive following in the trading card community. Soccer trading cards feature international stars like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Kylian Mbappé, making them highly desirable. With the sport's growing popularity in North America, soccer cards are becoming an increasingly lucrative investment.
Collectors often look for cards from major tournaments, such as the FIFA World Cup or UEFA Champions League. Autographed soccer cards and rookie cards of rising stars can significantly increase in value, particularly if the player performs well in high-profile games or wins major titles. Special editions, like foil or chrome cards, often have a limited print run, adding to their desirability among collectors.
Football Cards: A Touchdown in the Hobby Market
Football cards, particularly those featuring NFL players, are a staple in the sports trading card market. From autographed cards of Hall of Fame legends like Joe Montana, Tom Brady, and Jerry Rice to rookie cards of emerging stars like Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert, football cards offer a rich and diverse collecting experience.
Autographed football cards are especially popular, often featuring on-card signatures or stickers. Many collectors prefer on-card autographs due to their authenticity and the personal touch they provide. Memorabilia cards, which contain pieces of game-worn jerseys, gloves, or even footballs, are also highly coveted, offering fans a tangible connection to their favorite players.
Exploring the World of Autographed and Memorabilia Cards
Autographed cards and memorabilia are considered the crown jewels of sports card collections. Autographed baseball cards, for example, are highly prized, especially those featuring Hall of Fame inductees like Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Derek Jeter. Autographs from deceased legends or those limited in number can command high prices.
Similarly, Hall of Fame autographs cards and NBA autographs cards, featuring players from the greatest eras of basketball and football, are sought after by collectors looking to own a piece of sports history. These cards not only capture the essence of the player but also hold significant historical value, making them unique collectibles.
Memorabilia cards, on the other hand, often include game-used items, such as jerseys, bats, or shoes, embedded within the card. These cards offer a tactile connection to the games and players they represent, making them particularly appealing to passionate fans. Basketball memorabilia cards featuring pieces of a player’s jersey or even a section of the basketball court from an iconic game add a unique dimension to any collection.
The Appeal of Sports Memorabilia Cards
Sports memorabilia cards have become an essential part of the collecting hobby. They combine the thrill of owning a rare piece of sports history with the nostalgia and connection fans feel towards their favorite athletes. Memorabilia cards often feature patches, autographs, or even fragments of the playing field, creating a unique product that resonates deeply with collectors.
For example, basketball memorabilia cards may include a patch from a player’s jersey worn during a playoff game, or even a piece of the hardwood from a court where a historic play occurred. Football memorabilia cards might feature fragments of game-worn helmets, cleats, or gloves, providing fans with an intimate connection to their favorite athletes. These pieces are limited in production, making them rare and often valuable additions to any collection.
Tips for New Collectors: Building a Valuable Collection
If you’re new to the world of sports trading cards, starting your collection can be both exciting and overwhelming. Here are a few tips to help you get started:
Research and Focus: Determine which sport, team, or player you’re most passionate about. Focusing on a niche, such as soccer trading cards or basketball memorabilia cards, can help you build a cohesive and valuable collection.
Condition Matters: Always pay attention to the condition of the card. Cards in mint condition, graded by services like PSA or Beckett, are more valuable. Protect your cards by using sleeves, top loaders, or display cases.
Learn About Grading: Grading is a critical component in determining the value of sports cards. Understanding the grading process and what makes a card gem mint can help you make better purchasing decisions.
Invest in Autographs: Autographed cards, such as football autographs cards or Hall of Fame autographs cards, often appreciate over time. Look for cards with on-card autographs rather than sticker autographs, as these tend to be more valuable.
Stay Updated: The sports trading card market is dynamic. Stay updated with news about players, sports events, and card releases. Players’ performances can significantly impact card values, especially for rookies or young stars.
Attend Card Shows and Auctions: Participating in card shows, auctions, or online forums can help you connect with other collectors, learn more about the hobby, and find rare cards to add to your collection.
The Future of Sports Trading Cards and Memorabilia
The world of sports trading cards and memorabilia is ever-evolving. With the rise of digital collectibles and blockchain-based assets, such as NFTs, the future of sports memorabilia is moving towards a digital and physical hybrid. However, the tangible joy of holding a card in your hands, the thrill of opening a new pack, or finding that elusive autographed card will always keep traditional sports cards relevant.
In conclusion, whether you’re a fan of basketball, soccer, or football, there’s a sports card or piece of memorabilia waiting for you. As the market continues to grow and evolve, collectors can look forward to new opportunities to own a piece of sports history. So, start collecting today, and who knows – you might just uncover the next gem in the world of sports trading cards!

All You Need is Love:
How the Packers’ 2020 Gamble Finally Paid Off
Ok the title of this one may be ‘cringe’ as the kids say (right?) but the message rings true regardless. We finally have to come to terms with the fact that the Packers’ run of star Quarterback play looks set to continue with Jordan Love. While it’s high school prom night premature to anoint him as their third straight hall of famer at the position, his growth throughout the year and playoff debut seem to have validated the Packers’ ballsy selection that sent Aaron Rodgers into a dark ayahuasca fueled bender.
NFC North rivals may want to turn back now as today we will be taking a look at how the Packers once again seem to have manufactured a franchise Quarterback and how they look poised to make a run at the NFC for years to come. We apologize to Lions’ fans in advance who so graciously gave us the only compelling playoff game of Wild Card Weekend en route to their first postseason victory since O.J. Simpson was primarily known as an NFL Hall of Famer. As fun of a story as they are and as much as we are pulling for their dream run to continue, the North may not belong to them for long. So how did we get here?
Not Getting Caught Up in LaFleur’s Early Success
It would have been easy to be blinded by the immediate success Green Bay experienced under then first year Head Coach Matt LaFleur. In his debut season, LaFleur led the Packers to their first Conference Championship since the famous ‘Run the Table’ campaign. To give context to how impressive that feat was, the Cowboys’ last 6 Head Coaches haven’t made it to the NFC Championship. Unfortunately, both campaigns ended virtually the same with blowout losses to Shanahan orchestrated offenses. Nonetheless, winning your division along with a Conference Championship Participation Trophy in the first year installing your system speaks volumes about a Coach, even with a Hall of Famer under center. It would have been easy for LaFleur to live in the moment and push his chips to the table in a loaded Receiver draft in the subsequent offseason.
Instead Packers’ brass could not have pivoted further, opting to look over the steering wheel at a post Rodgers’ world and trading up to draft Jordan Love with the the 26th overall pick. For years, Rodgers made them look like absolute fools for making this move as he posted back-to-back MVP campaigns and back-to-back no. 1 Playoff Seeds. Despite this success, Green Bay’s starter was pushing 40 and the LaFleur/Rodgers partnership yielded zero Super Bowl appearances. Cheeseheads may always wonder what could have been if they’d drafted a key contributor on the heels of an NFC Championship appearance, but franchise QBs don’t come around every year and sustained success is an art form few organizations have perfected. This move appeared to be aging horribly until
Love Demonstrated Progress
In the early throngs of the season, long standing proclamations of the Love experiment being an abysmal failure seemed to ring profoundly true. Green Bay started the season 4-6 heading into Thanksgiving and has been about as predictable as what is going to come out of Joe Biden’s mouth at any given moment. Love’s completion percentage has yo-yoed anywhere from 50.0 to 67.5. Even after a Turkey Day thrashing of the 3 Seed Lions and a subsequent ass beating of the defending Super Bowl Champion Chiefs, this team shit the bed against the Giants and Bucs before eeking out a win against Bryce Young and his pee wee football squad.
Despite a Jekyll and Hyde year, Love himself finished strong down the stretch with his Passer Rating never dipping below 109.1 the last four games of the season as he led Green Bay to the playoffs in his rookie* season.
Playoff Debut
With the Packers being so hot and cold most of the year and the annually anointed Dallas Cowboys achieving their highest playoff seeding since Dak Prescott’s rookie season, Love’s squad appeared to be an inevitable one night stand. While lots of fun, not someone you took seriously enough to make it work for the long haul. That’s where we were hilariously wrong. We blame ourselves really as, stupidly, we thought this Cowboys’ team was somehow different than the last 28 Cowboys’ teams that have blown their load early in the playoffs and gone home in short order.
Dallas disappointing after talking a big game really isn't surprising in hindsight, in fact it’s pretty on brand for them. What was surprising, was the stark contrast between the teams that showed up in the Wild Card Round. A Packers’ Defense that generated seven turnovers all year forced two in this game, while Dallas’ DPOY candidate and brick shithouse of a game wrecker, Micah Parsons, was held to one pressure (lowest of his career) and zero sacks.
On the other side of the ball it would be very easy to conflate who was making their playoff debut as Jordan Love surgically eviscerated the Cowboys’ much lauded Defense for a 157.2 passer rating while Dak Prescott gave hope to every armchair QB at the bar out there who swears he could play the position better. Wild Card Weekend was the undoubtably the pique of the Love era to date. Now we turn the page as we look to
The Road Ahead
As fate would have it, today Love will have to attempt a feat even his Jedi Master couldn’t achieve. Beating the 49ers. The Niners have tormented the Packers in the postseason over the years winning the last four straight and often in emphatic fashion with record breaking performances from the likes of Raheem Mostert and the long since cancelled Colin Kaepernick. To make matters worse, the Packers have to go into Levi’s Stadium on short rest against arguably the best Niners’ squad since 1994.
It would be fool’s gold (hehe get it?) to count out a team playing with house money coming off the performance they just had, but we’re not exactly betting our life savings on the upset today either. Regardless of the end result, if Love at least makes this interesting (here’s hoping on a Saturday night otherwise occupied by The Office reruns, strong drinks, and inevitable reflection of life decisions to this point) the Packers will have the ultimate affirmation that they will be ready to make a legitimate run at the NFC for years to come.
While they are going to have to figure out a long-term contract for Love, there is plenty of reason for optimism. The Aaron Rodgers’ dead money comes off the books in 2024. They have the youngest roster in the NFL that is producing well beyond their years with standouts such as Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Luke Musgrave to complement key veterans such as Aaron Jones and Jaire Alexander. They have five draft picks in the first three rounds next year. Matt LaFleur’s stock has never been higher. And god dammit for the rest of us when it comes to the Quarterback position, Love is all you need.

ILL FL NFL Breakdown 🏈🏉🏈🏉🏈🏉🏈🏉🏈
Las Vegas Raiders
The Rrrrraiders. Jimmy G is now in as Derek Carr was booted out. Will Jimmy G do what he usually do? Westcoast offense methodical plodding, safe play slant throws and slightly above average game manager? Get him on your bench as a back up QB just for the pure fact he has a top pure WR Davante Adam's. Adam's will have to see how he is schemed now with Jimmy Gs skill set. No other WRs will see enough volume to garner fantasy relevance. Jacobs however is a play now that he signed. Z. WHITE is the handcuff (injuries yknow). Special teams have never been well and the defense (aside Maxx Crosby as an IDP) is bad. The good thing with that is you can decider your start sits of your roster against them on weeks they are played against.
Houston Texans
Aside from Pierce (RB) and special team darling kicker Fairbairn, no other Texans should be in your starting slot - unless your in a deep league. Sure Robert Woods and Nico Collins could fill in on bye weeks. The rookie QB will have his woes. In the meantime keep an eye on Schultz as rookie QBs love the TE as a security blanket. The Texans defense is the most intriguing. They have low key been stout against the pass. Shouldn't be too surprising as the former 49ers defensive coordinator now turned head coach is making his mark.
Arizona Cardinals
Kyler ...when will he return? Until then, the Hollywood Browns and Zach Ertz of the world will take a hit in ranking from their usual upside. Connor is the lone sure play based on his role in the run game and passing volume. Are the cards tanking? QB coach drama? This team is in nowhere land.
Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen and company don't seem quite right. With thier obvious physical skill traits and team build, they can get by most games. But thier failure to capitalize on a emotionally charged Jets team shows some concerning signs. Ever since Daboll left to coach the Giants, Allen hasn't had the honing of his skills. It shows in the perplexing passing choices that end up in unusually high interception counts which hurts his final point box score at end of games. He is an elite QB but decisions like forcing the ball is taking points off the board. All this can be avoided. Diggs is a sure bet as always but I don't know if low key there is some schism on that team. It's Diggs or bust as Gabe is a non factor. The rookie TE is the story. James Cook now has Singletary out the way. This pass happy offense may not have Cook in best of fantasy pools but it's a clear path to targets. The defense will start hot but let's hope they sustain through the long season. Tyler Bass is a sure bet at Kicker given thier propensity to score.
New Orleans Saints
Derek Carr is there and head coach Payton is out. That match up would have been ideal but Carmichael who is the long standing offensive coordinator is now heading up the team. Taysom Hill will be a factor at QB or RB or be more of a WR/TE role player. Week 1 didn't reveal much regarding him. Shaheed has been the exciting reach play as a boom or bust. Chart topping speed makes him a big play monster. Thomas will either be a key player or an after thought. He's still there. A mish-mash of TE and RB makes things confusing. Sure Kamara after his 3 game suspension should be a thing but he is getting older with tread on the tires. Nonetheless his passing profile lends him to be a starting role. Jamal Williams has the goal line potential but what he did with the lions is gonna be hard to reproduce. They do have a rookie QB that's shown some promise. Just dunno how it melds together with Carr at the helm. Thier defense still has Cam Jordan and company which may make the Saint the team to beat in the division. Did you know Jimmy Graham is still playing on this team 😆
Tennessee Titans
The Titans are struggling to keep pace in the playoff contender category. The addition of Hopkins seems great on paper but with only one true viable WR option, Tannehill will have to force throws in windows against double coverage to feed Dhop. T. BURKS is a prospect at best at this point. The teams identity is still King Henry first. Only problem is the O-line is not as stout as it once was. The defense is competitive but not sure how they translate fantasy wise. Thier coach Vabrel will have them in games. It's just a gumbo of TE and RB heavy game flow with a dash of Dhop. None of it showing signs of being ideal week to week.
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers receivers didn't even reach 15 fantasy points as a whole (in regular scoring). The rookie QB has a late injury designation. Theilein and Chark are the starting WRs. Is Chubba Hubbard that much of a factor? There's just too many questions with a team clearly in rebuild. Perhaps Miles Sanders signing will have some attraction as a flex play or RB2 slots in fantasy team rosters. Expect and up and down (mostly down) year.
Indy Colts
Colts Jim Irsay has supplanted his flag in the Anthony Richardson bandwagon. He has obvious physical traits and is a work in progress. That's what he is banking on. He'll be viable until Defenses get Tape and come up with more complex schemes against the rookie. Even still, his size and speed can be the ace in the hole. You either in or out. Pittman scored but it will be a slow return of profits for him. The #2 WR is a down field play at best. Dunno the TE room rollout and Blankenship has been shipped off. The defense should hold some appeal in this division depending on when they aren't playing the Jags. They have a QB whisperer on the sideline...they may show out quicker than fans think.
Chicago Bears
Have a franchise QB on the team. Defensive minded head coach. Not a good combo. Until a true elite offensive coordinator is signed, Justin Fields will never develop correctly to reach his glass ceiling. It's more of them asking him to make plays on the fly. Regardless of his elite talent, if its not mastered, he's just winging it. That's not a winning formula for the team nor the fantasy results. Kmet is a crutch TE to use and Mooney has been regulated to number 2 with DJ Moores arrival. The defense lost key players so you know how that goes. At the end, Moore & Fields were drafted high and expected to produce as such. Without cohesive changes, expect a mix bag for most of the season. Herbert...
LA Chargers
I wanna say San Diego so bad lol. Herbert. With Kellen Moore coming from Cowboys to offense coordinate, many are expecting this team to take another leap (specifically in offense). The defense is the highest paid In the entire NFL. Derwin James and company have Bosa signed to a big deal now and must show results. Chargers are a franchise notorious for not wanting to shell out money for players (multimillionaire as opposed to thier billionaire counterparts). Chargers got scored on bad in week 1 from Tua/Tyreek and Co. Again, offenses are slow to gel and get timing. Defenses typically in recent years have the jump. Allnthat is to say Chargers D better ramp things up quickly. Herbert made the playoffs finally so naturally they want to advance further in a loaded AFC conference. The health of Mike Williams and Kennan is key. Josh Palmer is still the trusted number 3 WR but the drafted Q. Johnson is the longterm bench sit that fantasy managers are hoping will come to fruition at the most critical time of the season vying for the playoffs. Everett should have his role pretty much enact given Kellen Moore history of scheming up Dak to Schultz plays in Dallas. Hopefully the kicking woes are behind them.

Isn’t Kyle Rayner’s move into the background compounded by Geoff Johns forcing Hal Jordan back into the spotlight when no one was really clamouring for it (even if you did enjoy that run)?
I mean, Kyle was explicitly created to replace Hal and became very popular in his own right, so I understand people being upset with what happened. It’s the same thing that happened to Wally West - we take it for granted now, but the return of the old guard was never really viewed as on the cards back then.
"No one was really clamoring for it"? Oh how quickly we forget:
Hal fans never stopped screaming for his return, and the return of the Green Lantern Corps in general. If you thought the Snyder Cult was bad, these guys were their forefathers. And they hated Kyle for the exact reason you state: Kyle was meant to be Hal's permanent replacement, and furthermore to be a radical change in what being a Green Lantern meant. Wally and Barry can both be Flash without any major problems far as I'm concerned, but Hal and the GLC returning has hurt Kyle because Kyle is not supposed to be your standard GL.
Of the "Four Corpsmen" he's the only one who doesn't have a background in the military while Hal, John, and Guy do. He wasn't chosen because he was the best candidate but because he was the only one Ganthet could find on short notice. Finally Kyle's status relies upon being the "Torchbearer" the one who kept the green light going when Parallax had almost snuffed it out. Once the Corps comes back... where does Kyle fit in? His popularity came from being the "only" Lantern, a raw recruit handed the most powerful weapon in the galaxy and left to figure out how the hell he was going to redeem the name "Green Lantern" after Hal Jordan's fall. Once he's accomplished that and brought both the Guardians and the GLC back to life, what should be his new direction? The other human Lanterns have central conflicts rooted in their backgrounds and personalities, but Kyle's issues were mainly a result of inexperience. Time offered a solution to his problem in a way it didn't for the rest.
Yes Hal's return hurt Kyle, but if you look at the sales, Kyle's popularity was already slipping. That's what opened the proverbial door to the idea of bringing back Hal in the first place. GL's sales weren't doing very well, and Kyle was just as passé as Hal had been when Kyle had replaced him. Maybe my memory is failing me but while Johns may have pushed Hal as the "the greatest", I definitely remember a lot of GL stories around that time fawning over Kyle as "the torchbearer" and as Ion. Kyle kept being in a fairly unique position compared to the other human Lanterns.
DC kept trying to maintain his uniqueness by giving him roles that pushed him back into being "the rookie" again. Mastering Ion or the White Lantern powers was a way to reset Kyle without actually resetting him. Each time he was handed immense power with no training or mentor to guide him, and he had to figure out how to wield the power for good. Omega Men likewise thrust him into the center of a space sector's politicking that he knew nothing about, and he had to learn the realities of the Omega Sector first hand. A good kid in over his head has been the go-to story for Kyle ever since his debut, and I wonder if anyone can write a story for him that moves beyond that.
I see two possible directions for Kyle: one re-emphasize him as the Earthbound GL. Kyle has a life and a career here on Earth that's important, put him back in Los Angeles and make him that city's protector again. Give him a day job as an artist that he needs to meet deadlines for, and give him a non-superpowered civilian love interest to complement that. Nerf the ring so he needs to worry about food and paying rent, give him "normal problems" in addition to the superhero threats. Kyle was meant to be the Spider-Man of the GLs, so let's put that back at the front again. Otherwise let's throw him back into another Omega Sector situation where he's in over his head out in space and has to solve a crisis on his own. That Round Robin GL: Underworld On Fire pitch sounded perfect, bring that back the same way that Blue Beetle got brought back:
Fish out of water Kyle seems to be his best status quo for space adventures. Send him to another area of the DC cosmos we haven't seen before and do a story that lays out a case for what Kyle continues bringing to the table that none of the other Lanterns do.

svech: a very serious and responsible primer
ok @totally-necessary and @needsmore, i am gonna write you an andrei svechnikov primer and i am going to do my best to produce a work of responsible well-sourced expository prose instead of an embarrassing thirsty disaster like the rest of my andrei svechnikov blogging.
here is my introductory paragraph:
wait, no, give me another shot. i swear i can actually do this. here is my introductory paragraph:
HOW CAN I NOT LOVE THIS GOOD-NATURED FEARLESS JOYFUL SHOULDER-FRECKLED SEX KITTEN????? HOW CAN I DO ANYTHING BUT CRY ALL THE TIME?????
.......ok. sorry. let me try it again. i’ll do it right this time, i promise. here is my introductory paragraph:
once upon a time in siberia, two-year-old andrei svechnikov put on skates for the first time and cried because he couldn’t follow his big brother evgeny onto the ice. eventually evgeny’s coach let andrei join the team’s workouts, and then coach started giving the older players a hard time when andrei would beat them.
the backstory of the svech bros sounds a lot like every other hockey kid who didn’t grow up privileged: parents who worked multiple jobs and sacrificed and moved cities to make sure the kids got hockey opportunities. in interviews, the svechnikov brothers have referenced not knowing where food or clothes were going to come from, and they emphasize how close it made them. evgeny says:
Having a brother that we eat from one plate--sleep in one bed sometimes--we went through everything. It's just one person by your side always. It's like going hunting alone or with somebody.
they wear the same number. they talk every day. as soon as the season paused in march, evgeny drove to north carolina. lately, they’re hanging out in michigan. basically, if hockey is not being played, they are together. basically, if you are going to write a primer about andrei, the most important thing is evgeny.
(my theory is that evgeny is at least part of the reason andrei does not like it when dougie and foegs joke about him being their kid brother. it’s the only joke i’ve ever seen svech refuse to roll with.)
evgeny got drafted by the red wings in 2015 (round 1, 19th overall). he started out with the AHL affiliate in grand rapids, and in 2016 mama svech packed up andrei and moved from russia to michigan. andrei played a season for the muskegon lumberjacks in the USHL. he led the team in scoring and was named USHL rookie of the year. the next season he was the first selection in the CHL import draft, and played for the barrie colts.
ok, so while we’re knocking out the backstory, i want to note that svech’s full name is Andrei Igorevich Svechnikov. don’t tell me that’s not sexy.
furthermore, the very spelling of andrei is sexy. i had a russian-speaking colleague once who had a son named andrei and she would say his name with a little lift at the end. not like the i added another syllable, just like a little caress. i hear it that way when i type it. it makes me happy to type that i at the end. andrei. andrei.
oh sorry, did i veer off topic?
the carolina hurricanes selected andrei second overall in the 2018 draft. he looked just as dumb as everybody always does in their draft night jersey photos, but here’s his draft day suit:
oh wait, can’t pass up the opportunity for a combine photo
did i say COMBINE? i meant JAWLINE
wait one more photo from the combine, just because he looks especially dead poets society in this one:
upon moving to raleigh, andrei emphatically wanted to live alone, which seems unusual for an 18-year-old entering the NHL and is therefore fertile ground for all sorts of headcanons. he keeps his floors very clean and gets mad when his buddies won’t take their shoes off. i am not making this up. he lives in the same apartment complex as dougie hamilton, warren foegele, joel edmundson (rip), and teuvo teravainen. andrei does not cook and he’s constantly calling them to see who wants to go out to eat.
in that last video i linked you can see foegs stumble and jump off his scooter just before he hits the gate to their parking garage. then the gate rises like magic and svech glides straight through. this is an unsubtle metaphor for andrei svechnikov’s entire athletic existence.
svech purportedly does not play video games, which is wild to me. instead, he practices magic tricks. again, i am not making this up.
wait i’m sorry it’s been at least ten minutes since i looked at a picture of andrei svechnikov holding a bunch of kittens
ok where was i.
svech had a pretty solid rookie season in 2018-19, but you can look up the numbers elsewhere if you want them. he was the first player born this century to score in the NHL but we don’t like to think about his 2000 birthdate. he played on a line with jordan martinook for a lot of that first season, and you can read more about that romantic nonsense in the ship primer i’ll be writing next. more recently the canes have settled into a top line of svech, sebastian aho, and teuvo teravainen, which is a pretty deadly combo.
one incident of note from svech’s rookie season is that he got knocked the fuck out by alex ovechkin. we’ll be talking more about that in the ship primer too, but if you want the video it’s here.
here, have a little celly:
svech’s most touted accomplishment is scoring the NHL’s first-ever Michigan-style lacrosse goal. this article has a very good description of how it worked. the postgame interview from that game is so endearing it makes me want to claw my face off. he’s talking so fast (for him) and he keeps repeating that his brother taught it to him, just absolutely determined to make sure everyone knows this milestone belongs to evgeny too.
also, this season, he scored the first playoff hat trick in franchise history.
the thing about andrei svechnikov is that nobody has a bad word to say about him. everybody thinks he’s an amazing player (”skilled and tenacious yet loose and creative”) and everybody compliments his work ethic (shooting pucks for hours after practice or a game) and journalists call him a “transcendent star.” everybody says he’s a great person. everybody calls him special. jordan martinook says svech never has a bad word to say about anyone.
ok it’s kitten time again!
more svech facts of note:
drives a black mercedes, poorly. “he wants to win on the road, too,” says foegs.
his voice gets very soft when he is uncertain about something but he’s loud when he wins a card game. (”GOOD NIGHT, BROTHER! SEE YOU NEXT GAME!”)
loves french toast for breakfast.
guilty pleasure is milkshakes.
if he was an animal, he’d be a bear (”like a russian bear.”)
does monster summer workouts with ivan provorov
look how fucking cute he is
the invaluable social media team over at hurricanes hq understands the svech content the world needs. i’m gonna tackle some more of this in the ship primer, but here are the best ones:
who’s your daddy? this video features svech confusedly asking “daddy?”, which is literally everything i ever want in fic or in life. once he finally understands he’s expected to choose between two teammates, he chooses the one who’s his buddy. and then after he’s catcalled from offscreen, he slouches down in his chair and changes his answer. “both,” he mutters, looking unbearably smug. “both.”
cookie face. it takes marty a very entertaining 49 seconds to eat the cookie. then svech hacks the game and wins in 7 second flat. “he’s good at everything,” marty marvels from offscreen.
this is a terrible concept for a video but it does feature svech and dougie doing the famous scene from stepbrothers, and svech giving a sweeping bow. i will forgive him for wearing a duke hat but only because he wears a tarheels hat in the three amigos video above.
has it been too long since a kitten photo? it’s definitely been too long since a kitten photo.
in conclusion, andrei svechnikov is a massive life-ruining problem and also he is perfect. i love him.
