Cheritz's changes in staff over the lifetime of The Ssum

I wanted to write a post about this because it was the nail in the coffin convincing me that The Ssum won't get better. I really want to be optimistic, I was for the first year of the game's release. But with how hard they're fumbling June's route, and having some context by seeing the dramatic changes that happen behind the scenes, I don't have any hope for the game's future in its original concept.

So here's a big fat list of credits, comparison of them, and my own stupid commentary.

These are in the lyric booklet included in the Teo Love Bundle. Strangely enough, I'm already seeing differences between the 2018 credits and 2019. Uh oh?

These screenshots don't feature all the credits, unfortunately. I'm relying on screenshots someone else took because I'm not proactive but hindsight is 20/20.

Changes: Project is no longer managed by Heinrich Dortmann, instead by Juho Woo. Scenario team cut down to 2 people, one of which is a new name (Jooyoung Lim). Art team also cut down to 2 people. Sound is no longer resourced by Songhee Kim, but Jaeryeon Park and ROGIA. All new team of directing assistants as well, it expanded to 4 people but they're all new names. 2 fewer programmers, only one of the listed names was already working.

Here's where it somehow gets worse lol.

Changes: A lot. Directing assisted by 1 person. They were not a part of the team credited in the OP. Down to 3 programmers, only 1 being in the OP. Entirely new art team! It's up to 4 people, but all of them are new, even compared to only a few months prior. Down to 1 scenario writer pobrecita (but we're coming back to that). Since I don't have screenshots of the project assistant credits from launch, can't say anything for that, except that Gui Zhenghao is new compared to the OP but the number of staff there remained the same. Flaming Heart is gone for the BGM! He's been working with Cheritz for forever but is gone now. One person from the communication team left, so they're down to 2. That would explain why emails have been slower since October. Only 1 translator, though Cheritz is now looking to recruit new ones.

Important note:

According to Cheritz's post acknowledging their use of gAI, Sujin Ri was not involved in writing season 1 of the game, but IS the main writer for season 2. I won't make a rant about how much I hate what she's writing cuz this isn't the post for that, but it explains why season 2 is so vastly different.

The fact that only a few people (like, in the lower single digits) remain even from 2019/early 2022, let alone who's still around from 2018, is really frustrating for the game. The game started with one vision, but now it's being turned into something completely different. Even the app's functions are inconsistant between season 1 and 2 (and a little so between Harry and Teo). According to an email I got from Cheritz, season 2 takes place a few years before season 1. Just sit with that knowledge for a bit :P. It's like the current people in charge of The Ssum (*cough Sujiin Ri*) couldn't be bothered to keep the original concept in mind, let alone how the timeline would work.

This post was a long time coming, I was caught up in just how bizarre this all is and finding tons of stuff that I haven't even included in the post. Writing this has taken about 3 hours (including the time I spent on a post ONLY FOR TUMBLR TO NOT WANNA WORK PROPERLY WHEN I TRIED TO POST IT SO IT GOT DELETED) and uhhh yeah. Now I gotta wait a few years to ask former staff if their NDAs are expired yet LOL

Com tantos Centros de Treinamento Olímpico espalhados pelo mundo, por que o Hamdeok Complex?

Hã… passei um bom tempo nos Estados Unidos, tempo até demais! E por mais que sejam os pioneiros nas Olimpíadas e eu pude aprimorar muito minhas habilidades no esporte, meu sonho de verdade era voltar para a Coréia, onde nasci e descobri minha paixão. Sentia saudade da família, amigos e já estava na hora de estar em solo nacional.

E como você entrou? Alguém te indicou e você passou pelos testes, você se inscreveu voluntariamente para fazer os testes ou houve alguma contribuição monetária envolvida?

A ideia era que eu me voluntariasse, mas… acabei me perdendo no tempo, sabe como é… a cabeça de atleta vive voando! Então, por conta do meu nome e da minha família, a contribuição acabou sendo mais que necessária.

Você certamente se destaca no esporte que pratica. O que motivou a sua escolha por ele?

Quando eu era mais novo, me apaixonei pelo esporte após ver sua elegância. Era lindo… a postura, a coreografia… absolutamente tudo me atraiu ao Esgrima.

Pode nos contar, brevemente, sobre sua trajetória no esporte até o momento?

Comecei ainda adolescente em clubes na escola. Logo, consegui um olheiro e patrocinador para a faculdade. Ingressei bem cedo, hoje tendo mais de 10 anos de carreira. Infelizmente houve um tempo que acabei me injuriando o que me fez parar e estudar moda, acabei não me dando bem, afinal minha vocação sempre foi o Esgrima. Depois de algumas fisioterapias nos Estados Unidos, voltei para a Coreia na intenção de voltar com meu renomado nome.

Quais são suas maiores qualidades e maiores defeitos? Como elas influenciam seu dia a dia como atleta?

Eu sou engraçado, prestativo, bem falante. Mas posso ser egoísta e mimado. Preciso dosar para conviver com o diferente de mim!

Sabemos que é uma grande honra ser convocado para representar seu país nos jogos olímpicos, mas existe alguma outra razão pela qual você deseje isso?

Bom, além do orgulho, a fama, obviamente também o dinheiro que vem com tudo isso para sustentar minha família.

Petunia the Duct Tape Imaginary Friend

For my art assignment I decided to create an imaginary friend like JooYoung Choi. When I was a kid my friend and I would make these dolls out of duct tape and I immediately thought of this when I saw JooYoung’s assignment. Meet Petunia:

Petunia is made mostly from duct tape with her insides stuffed with pillow stuffing and her arms, legs, and mouth with cardboard. I used some craft supplies to make her features and skirt and super glued everything that wasn’t duct taped. Some of this stuff I had laying around and some of it I went to the store to buy. I bought two rolls of duct tape but only used half of one. With the leftover materials I plan to take them over to my 10 year old cousins house to see if she would like to make her own duct tape imaginary friend.

I made her like a puppet just like JooYoung made her friends in hopes of animating her in some way. I put this clamp on the back where the hand holes are because otherwise her head just falls back. I wasn’t very confident in my puppeteer skills so I ended up taking her to my work so she could have tea with a friend. My friend Kelsey enjoyed having a tea party and imagining if Petunia could talk, what her personality might be like.

Overall the process was pretty fun and nostalgic. It was interesting to go to the store during this time and having to wear a mask. That was the only thing that was unusual about this process considering the Covid-19 pandemic. I ended up straining my left wrist from all the pulling of the duct tape.

I think JooYoung’s art is really fun and intriguing. I enjoyed learning about The Cosmic Womb and seeing how JooYoung brings her friends to life and interacts with them. I love that the mention of Henry Darger and his world he created for The Vivian Girls comes up in the art assignment video. I discovered him a while ago and was fascinated by his work and story. I think it’s really amazing how vivid people’s imagination can be and I think we could all benefit from opening that up more so and allowing our minds to find new realms within our imaginations such as how JooYoung and Henry Darger have.

As part of my doll-self assignment I’ve started looking into several new artists, the first being JooYoung Choi. Choi was born in South Korea but was adopted by a family living in New Hampshire. She began as a painter but now creates work across a multitude of disciplines.

Choi’s work centres around a fictional world she has created called ‘The Cosmic Womb’. She has built every aspect of this world from scratch from the inhabitants to the locations to the mythology. Each character has their own backstory and are often symbolic of emotions or experiences which are significant in Choi’s life.

I really respond to how colourful Choi’s work is and the childlike quality it has. I also respect the amount of work she has put in to fleshing out the world and its characters. Below is a link to one of the videos she made exploring the Cosmic Womb.

Trenton Doyle Hancock, African American, and his wife JooYoung Choi, Korean American, are both critically acclaimed American artists! Trenton makes prints, videos, drawings, sculptures, individual performances, and collaged felt paintings. He is well known for his artwork featuring the Mounds and the Vegans, two opposing forces that he created that represent the eternal battle between good and evil. Trenton has won numerous awards over the years and he was one of the youngest artists to ever be featured in the prestigious Whitney Biennial when he was selected in 2000 for the first time. His work has appeared in numerous exhibitions, storybooks, a mural at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium, and even a ballet. JooYoung is equally talented with her artwork through paintings, video, sculpture, animation, music, and installation art multidisciplinary world-building. She is famous for creating a theme she calls the Cosmic Womb, which is semiautobiographical representing her experience as a Korean adoptee in the US. Her artwork has been shown globally in numerous exhibits and media outlets including the Asian Pacific American Experience, the National Museum of Mexican Art, and the Korean Global News Network.
