WHAT A GREAT QUESTION, ANON! I have been wildly (and uncharacteristically for me, an ex omegaverse hater) obsessed with omegaverse Exos since I got into Exo, and my thoughts on them recently changed drastically, so what good timing you have!

I’ll first start with saying that I don’t like betas, and never include them in any thoughts about omegaverse. I just think they’re boring– though I do have friends who have managed to make them VERY interesting; I just think I don’t have anything insightful or interesting to say about them myself.

And for a second note, I think it’s important to describe what I think omegaverse is for really: because it has many meanings that change based on who’s writing in it. For me, omegaverse makes most sense as a formalization of power dynamics. One could make the argument that it’s inherently kinky (and in fact, I do). It’s less about inherent sexuality OR gender, and more about inherent power structures and how someone could play with them. This is not to say that interesting discussions can’t happen in omegaverse about sexuality or gender– because they absolutely can and do, but I think mostly, it’s about biological power, in a way that our actual society thinks exists and tries to enforce (violently and forcefully), that is actually made real via omegaverse.

For the Fandom Olds among us, this interpretation would not come as a surprise, considering omegaverse took the place of BDSM AUs in fandom!

ANYWAY, EXOS!

Pack alpha: Minseok

Alphas: Junmyeon, Jongdae, Chanyeol, Kyungsoo

Omegas: Yixing, Baekhyun, Jongin, Sehunnie

Minseok:

As the oldest, and from the fact that Minseok in canon refused to be Exo-M’s leader, it just makes so much sense for him to be the pack alpha but not the band leader. He has the character of a supervisor dom. He’s not involved with everyone in the band and entangled with them– because, frankly, they are too loud and too messy, and he has no energy to deal with so many people needing his attention and involvement. But he is a steady presence that they can all depend on. He listens to their problems and pets them about them. He scruffs the alphas into place when necessary (and reassures them that even if they fuck up, he’ll be there to help), and spends time with the omegas when they need him, and makes sure that their needs are taken care of and that they don’t feel too lost in the pack.

I’m pretty sure that even in omegaverse, Minseok is queer, and he probably prefers alphas to omegas; less mess, and more satisfaction in bringing them to heel.

Naturally, the person he’s closest to in the pack is Jongdae, this is canon in any and all universes. They’re the gossip husbands, drinking late at night and talking about the rest of the band like two intensely invested aunties, but being steady and gentle with the others the rest of the time. They probably sleep together, but they’re definitely not monogamous, and as in canon, probably are both aware that Jongdae would actually like to settle down with a mate at some point.

Minseok spends the omegas’ heats with them if they want him to, as do all the alphas– because the Exos are all very very busy and alternate being with the omegas depending on their schedules. His favorite is probably Sehunnie though, because Sehun is whiny but pliant and obedient in heat; the rest are complicated (will get to them!)

Junmyeon:

I imagine him to be as neurotic in omegaverse as he is in canon. He’s a sadist and is terrified of this fact. He takes his job as leader so seriously that it fucks with his head and makes him make very strange personal decisions. He’s an alpha and a dom, but the fact that he’s so scared of his sadism makes him show his belly to his pack and try so hard to be gentle and soft that the overcorrection makes him seem awkward instead.

I think, if I were to transplant canon onto omegaverse, that Junmyeon did not overcorrect so hard until a while after debut; because at first he would punish the Exos for mistakes as harshly as a supervisor, and oooof that probably gave him such a headrush that it turned into kink for him IMMEDIATELY.

Junmeon is Like This in canon really, so what makes omegaverse so much worse for him is that it formalizes all the power dynamics in head in a way that makes it so easy to take advantage of. And he is so convinced the sadism makes him a bad person, that having omegas begging for him in heat, crying and in pain without him even having to do a single thing to them except be there, simply would take him to pieces. Just imagine canon Junmyeon with the power to bite someone and claim them biologically forever… the man wrote the Exos’ names on his damn body, he would lose his fucking mind!!!

Anyway, I think therefore, that Junmyeon is terrified MOST of Baekhyun and Yixing, the resident omega masochists in the band– and to an extent, Chanyeol, who is a masochist but not omega. So, I would imagine him being SO WEIRD with all three of them. Too strict and mean to Chanyeol, and so wary as to almost be avoidant of Yixing, and strangely both overprotective and overconfident in Baekhyun.

Hilariously, he and Sehun click very comfortably, because Sehun isn’t a masochist or a sub. He’s just very into being indulged and having things done for him and to him, and it makes him vibe enough like a sub that it’s hot, but not enough to terrify Junmyeon or cause him to have intense sadistic emotion about Sehun. This also means they’re not super compatible actually lmao, they’re just comfortable enough that they stick together.

I think Junmyeon and Minseok have an interesting relationship, where Minseok would like to be hyung and head alpha for Junmyeon but Junmyeon is too weird about being perceived to be submitting to anyone that whenever Minseok tries to support him, Junymeon just pretends to be Fine™ harder.

Generally though, Junmyeon is a good leader. He’s incredibly competent when it comes to the band’s relationships with management, and he’s incredibly protective and invested in the wellbeing of his pack members. All of his weirdness sort of impacts him internally, but it works to present him the way he desires his image to be externally.

Yixing:

[vibrates] He… the baby…

He’s an omega and a sub. He came into the band with much Trauma™ (familial, as in canon D: ), which made him need so much affection and love that it makes him seem hungry. He pushes himself so hard that it makes him ill often, and it makes it difficult to care about him, because to do so means people have to constantly love him and see him be hurt. He doesn’t have the instincts that lets him trust people to catch him if he falls, so he simply always feels that he’s on his own, even if he isn’t.

In omegaverse, he probably has very difficult heats. Trauma and hormone fuckery do not go well together in any universe, so his heats probably fuck with his emotions massively. And the fact that most of his injuries are spine-related, means that his pelvic floor is just fucked, and would mean his heats actually physically hurt!!!!

The emotional part means that during his heats, he clings so hard to the people next to him to make sure they don’t leave, that he leaves bruises and scratch marks. He probably cries and howls if any of the alphas get up to get him food because he’s scared they’re not coming back and that he’ll be abandoned. He probably wants to be mated and sobs when he isn’t, even though outside of heat he would know it would be a bad idea to mate.

The physical part means he’s in miserable (very unusual) pain throughout.

This makes it a large ordeal to deal with for the pack. Especially considering they are all so tired and so busy and barely have time to rest anyway. And the fact that they have a rotational system for alphas spending time with the in-heat omegas so they don’t miss schedules, which in Yixing’s case simply doesn’t work.

They do love him, but he’s difficult to help. It stresses everyone out and makes the alphas feels horrible and bad at their jobs.

Yixing probably gets on suppressants at some point and simply never comes off them, especially when he starts spending more time in China without any pack around :(

Outside of heat, he smells sweet and is comforting to be around. He’s so skin hungry that he’ll always want to cling to a pack member when they’re home, which they are only happy to do. And he’s good at being hyung to the younger members. He’s also massively good at his job as an artist, it just, you know, kills his body oops… TT

Being away from the pack does make everything worse for him, though. It’s a sore subject for Junmyeon and Minseok especially, that they let one of their pack omegas run off that way where they can’t help him at all. It makes everyone sad.

Baekhyun:

He’s an omega, a sub, and a sadist (masochist too, fun combo!) Baekhyun is highly invested in being important to everyone. He wants to be loved so much that he wants to own all the Exos and be owned by all of them, but he’s very aware of how this sounds so he’s just privately insane about this, but publicly all jokey and fun, rather than deeply intense.

The fact that he’s a sadist makes him a strange omega for alphas. So, I bet Baekhyun enjoys being with the omegas most often– bet it almost makes him think he’s like Minseok, and likes omegas more than alphas; but that’s not true. What he really needs is an alpha who would put a hand on his neck and put him in his place but also lets him bite and scratch and be mean to them as well. He needs to sub for his health and well being, but he also needs to feel that it’s safe to sub by being allowed to do horrible things to his alpha/dom and feel like he has power in the relationship. Subbing is so so vulnerable for Baekhyun, it makes him terrified to his bones, but he also wants it really badly.

Anyway, as in canon lmao, Minseok finds Baekhyun too messy and difficult to deal with, so he just flirts and toys with him a little, and probably sleeps with Baekhyun during heats if he’s needed, but doesn’t really let Baekhyun in his bed outside of heat.

Chanyeol is too vulnerable to deal with Baekhyun’s barbed wire words and pointy claws, he takes it too personally, and Baekhyun has to be careful around him. Though when Baekhyun is careful, they’re good friends, and Baekhyun does enjoy sleeping with him and toying with him a little.

Sehunnie is probably Baekyun’s go-to for sex outside of heats (points to the unreal amounts of Baekhyun biting Sehun photos in canon.)

Junmyeon and and Baekhyun are insanely compatible but they have no idea. Junmyeon is terrified of being too much and hurting people but if he actually does hurt Baekhyun (sexy), Baekhyun would lose his goddamn mind. Because Baekhyun needs intensity most of all, he needs to feel like his partner is obsessed with him: and Junmyeon is the most intense person in this band.

Kyungsoo and Baekhyun probably have good sex, but Kyungsoo has absolutely no tollerance for Baekhyun trying to exercise power– which is hot! But you know, it doesn’t let Baekhyun relax entirely with him. It’s the same with Jongdae probably, except Jongdae is nicer about it.

Chanyeol:

He’s an alpha but he’s not interested in holding power over people, it makes him deeply uncomfortable. He’s not a dom, and not a sub, but he does enjoy power games when they’re meant to bring people closer together and build trust.

He frequently goes through periods of being super insecure about how he presents as an alpha, and trying to be more masc and domineering, but it only ever ends up making him feel worse. And during those periods, he often feels like going to the other alphas for help and support is a weakness and tries to do everything himself, including figuring out his own mental blocks– this almost never works.

He clashes with Junmyeon a lot, because he both wants Junmyeon’s attention and admiration and praise, and wants Junmyeon’s to see him as an alpha and respect his authority, and Junmyeon is, as stated before, WEIRD about power things!!!

Though Minseok knows how to be good to Chanyeol and often compensates where Junmyeon fails. So does Jongdae, though he spent a while not really understanding why Chanyeol is the way he is and why he struggles with the things he struggles with.

Kyungsoo’s steadiness and assuredness in himself makes him a good friend to Chanyeol. It helps to look to Kyungsoo when Chanyeol is in flux and feels like nothing is static enough to hold onto.

Sechan are like canon Sechan, naturally. They are weird about power dynamics together in a way that helps both of them. It makes Chanyeol feel at ease that he’s not holding any power via the fact that he’s alpha or hyung over Sehun, and it makes Sehun happy to feel like he holds Chanyeol’s leash and can make him do whatever he wants. What Sehun often wants Chanyeol to do though, is to take care of things for him: take care of food and buying things, and making sure Sehun is comfortable, to fuck Sehun well and not make Sehun do things, and to praise Sehun in front of other people and let Sehun bask in the fact that he’s getting everything he wants. All of this makes Chanyeol feel good and useful and like a good alpha! It’s great!

Jongdae:

He’s one of the people I hesitated for a very long time before assigning an omegaverse dynamic to. I eventually settled on alpha because he’s a caretaker and – although subtle– is actually a little bit of a control freak. He also finds too much contentment in, for example, calming Baekhyun down and making him behave, for him not to be some sort of flavor of dom.

He and Minseok fit well together because they both respect hierarchies a lot, and they respect inner pack workings. They also have the same casual but firm way that they approach their own internal moral compasses. They’re both stubborn and hard to convince to change, which makes them both comfortable, considering they are also both very influential and find it easy to change other people just by being around. They make each other feel safe to exercise the full breadth of their inherent power without the threat that this would affect the other in any way.

The fact that they are both doms, however, makes them incompatible long-term as sexual and romantic partners, even though they adore each other and probably do sleep together often. It’s a fact they are both aware of– though I am unsure if they both feel the axact same way about it. I change my mind often about this. Is Minseok sadder than Jongdae about this? Are they both just Fine? Don’t know. I’m not a Xiuchenist for real, but I do believe in them! So, I find myself thinking about this often.

Jongdae, like Minseok, finds Baekhyun too much to deal with. But he finds Junmyeon funny and gets less stressed out about the fact that Junmyeon won’t let him help than Minseok does. Because Jongdae isn’t the pack leader and he’s younger, he finds it easier to insert himself into Junmyeon’s business and meddle sometimes, without stepping to hard on Junmyeon’s toes.

He is soft with Yixing, and is sad for him, but Jongdae is very strict with himself about things which he cannot change, so he doesn’t let himself dwell on this often.

It took him a few years to understand Chanyeol’s little neuroses but he did eventually, so now he knows how to care for Chanyeol and that satisfies him greatly.

He’s generally very gentle and full of advice and pets for all younger and older pack members.

He has a stroke of sadism in him, but it’s not consuming like Junmyeon’s is, and he’s Normal about it. It’s very to do with sex for him, rather than his personality.

Kyungsoo:

He’s an alpha, and he’s possessive as fuck. He’s also a very sensible person, and has decided very early on that he will not be getting romantically involved with any of his members because they’re all insane and they’ll drive him out of his mind if he wants to go full possessive alpha on them!

He does think Jongin is incredibly hot and is very soft with him. He’s also known to be soft with Sehun, though he’d never admit to it.

He’s a neutral party in the pack, though he has a deep sense of justice and will stand with whoever he thinks is wronged in an argument.

I don’t have many Ksoo thoughts, he gives me a headache, his personality is impenetrable! Sorry 🙈

Jongin:

You might have noticed I’ve not spoken much about him with the other members, and that’s because I firmly believe that, while he is a part of this pack, he’s bonded to Taemin. Taemin is his alpha, and they are each other’s persons. Jongin only spends heats with the pack when Taemin is unavailable.

In the Exo pack, Nini is soft and baby. He lounges over the alphas and scents the other omegas and takes care of them. But he’s also stubborn and strong, and because he’s been mated for such a long time, thinks that all the others and their weird relationship problems are so tiring and silly!

That’s why he gets on with Kyungsoo a lot. Kyungsoo does not have weird relationship problems, because he simply has no messy relationships in the band XD They get to make fun of the others from their little cocoon.

Nini knows how to depend on the others to help him, and he’s very good at being a stabalizing and sensible influence in the pack.

Him and Taemin make each other so much better, and take care of each other’s needs so well that Nini effectively doesn’t need a pack. They just add to his life and he adores them. It makes him a very steady presence.

Sehun:

He effectively takes the role of a pack omega but not because he needs it, because the pack does. It’s good for them to have someone they can spoil and love this way. He gives them the opportunity of all feeling like they get to take care of him and be good for the pack by doing so; and by doing so, he gets to comfort them and take care of them without them feeling like they’re asking for care.

Sehun has large emotions about the pack, he needs all of them, and feels like they all need each other. He’s mostly quiet about it, though, he’s not a words person. He just flops in someone’s lap when he’s having emotions.

As in canon, he’s been in love with Chanyeol for years, but it takes them an insanely long time to work out what they are to each other. This lands Sehun in Junmyeon and Baekhyun’s beds often.

He’s an omega, but not a sub or a dom. Like Chanyeol, he enjoys toying with power dynamics broadcast trust. Though he would melt into the center of the earth if Chanyeol bit him and mated him. And he would die if Chanyeol had a collar on and let himself be ordered around by Sehun. It’s all very deeply unusual and not standard bdsm XD

I feel like I talked about Sehun’s relationships with the other members throughout the answer above, so I won’t repeat them here!

but it didn’t come to his mind at the time that everything would have to be done in korean

and really, junmyeon had to laugh at that

he offered to help yixing if he needed too

so they got a lot closer

and the rest is history

junmyeon’s the student council president

and that was actually because of popular demand

he never really thought about it but people kept pushing him

so he ran for it and won

actually, chanyeol made a bet with his music major friends

and he was like, junmyeon’s number 1 supporter

he even made a jingle for his campaign

baekhyun sang it

it was the talk of the university even a month after the elections

in conclusion: junmyeon is busy af

but he likes that he’s pursuing his dreams with all he’s got

junmyeon never does anything half-heartedly

Chapter 40 - Concert 2

A/N: Apparently every time I think I’m back on track with writing life throws another curve ball at me so all I’ll say is here is the next chapter. I hope you enjoy it. If you want to help me out, reblog this for me (you don’t have to though, so no pressure there).

If you thought the previous day’s schedule was insane then today’s was next level. In addition to a full rehearsal and three hour concert, the interview schedule that had just been handed to you made your jaw drop. For some reason you thought there were only two interviews booked but on this list there were eight, not to mention six more that you weren’t required for as they weren’t in English. So much for your meticulous colour coded system. It had failed you today.

They were starting with the Korean and Japanese ones as the guys could do them in between sections of rehearsal. Four of the English ones were over the phone so they were to be done during lunch, the final four were video interviews so they had to be done after everyone had been through hair, make-up and wardrobe.

You found yourself a spot in the sea of chairs to set up for the day. That way you could still experience rehearsals and be around the guys but it would also allow you to go over the approved questions that would be in the interviews, prepare for the off the cuff ones that weren’t and eavesdrop as the guys discussed the other interviews they did throughout the day. Kyungsoo was asked about his growing star as an actor in the Korean interviews which he liked. Jongdae got to talk about OST’s and they talked about their concert, the album and their fans. They all tried to throw Kyungsoo under the bus to do aegyo but Minseok saved him. The Japanese interviews kept asking about a CBX Japanese debut which had only made ChenBaekXi overly excited when they returned to rehearsals. It made you incredibly happy to see how much more varied the Japanese interviews were. The guys were comfortable doing the Korean interviews but they also knew what to expect and which members were likely to be asked about their individual schedules. The Japanese interviews asked about each of the members and took interest in their upcoming schedules.

As you sat and watched them run through certain songs over and over again, fixing the tiniest of errors that no one except their managers and choreographers would notice, you were once again in awe of their dedication to their craft. You didn’t work this hard at something you didn’t love to do. They had been at the venue since 8am and the concert wasn’t until 7pm. Most people probably thought that they’d just rest or go be tourists for the day and rock up at the venue a few hours before showtime, definitely not 11 hours prior to the show. You were pulled from your thoughts about forcing them into beds to rest for more than a few hours at a time when two sweaty males flopped into the seats either side of you.

“What are you doing noona?” Jongdae asked as he took a big swig from his water bottle, rehydrating himself.

“Making sure I’m prepared for the interviews this afternoon.” You replied.

“You do know there is an office backstage. It has an ergonomic chair and a desk and everything.” Chanyeol laughed.

He had a point. You were slouched across two chairs with a laptop, notepad, dictionary and various other items strewn around you. An office would have made more sense but you had spent all of five minutes in it before deciding that you were too secluded. “I enjoy having your rehearsal as my background noise. Plus I get a good distraction if I look up at the right moments.” You winked.

Chanyeol winked back as Jongdae laughed. “Are you getting any work done? We can be preeetttyy distracting.”

You nodded. “I am. It's all about work life balance Dae. I work, then stare at all of you working a lot harder than me, enjoy the view for some healing time then get back to work.”

Chanyeol slapped his knee as he laughed. “Noona!” You grinned at his reaction..

Dae pretended to look offended. “How dare you objectify us! White Noise, Thunder, Playboy and Artificial Love are no place for such things.” He’d almost made it through his sentence before he broke and laughed. The idea that someone could not objectify them during that part of the set was ludicrous. There were more sensual body rolls and hip thrusts in those four songs than there were during the remainder of the concert.

You couldn’t stop your laughter at that point. “Sorry, I should have known better than to let my thoughts drift to filth while there are 9 men onstage on their knees body rolling against a cane. My bad.”

The two of them were laughing too hard to speak after that remark. “Noona, please!” Dae choked out as he wiped his eyes. “Stop!”

Their over the top reactions set you off and you couldn’t stop laughing either. Chanyeol looked like he was in pain from how hard he’d laughed. It was telling that the rest of the guys on the stage remained focused on what they were doing while two thirds of the beagle line were clearly goofing off.

You managed to stop laughing long enough to speak. “Wait. Aren’t you both supposed to be rehearsing?”

They glanced up at the stage, their laughter dying down as the moment passed. “Oh. Yeah they are working out some tweaks with the formations on this stage. That’s dancer’s work. We just confuse them and get in the way so they send us off to rest while they work it out.” Said Jongdae.

“Junmyeon and Kyungsoo are on break too but they’ve probably gone to nap backstage. Baekhyun has decided that he’s a main dancer since he has a solo at the start of the concert so he will stay up there and keep their mood bright… as well as irritate the crap out of Jongin.” Chanyeol added as he tried to get comfortable in the seat that was not made for someone with his build. “Minseok hyung will keep him in line though. He’s pretty good at keeping Baekhyun in line.”

You nodded as you observed Jongin, Sehun and Yixing kneeling around a piece of paper in the middle of the stage. To their right Minseok was hastily scribbling on his own pad of paper whilst simultaneously stopping Baekhyun from interfering with the revisions. You choked back a laugh as Baekhyun tried to move towards centre stage only to have Minseok yank him back by his hoodie without even looking up from his paper.

Following your gaze Dae grinned. “So Minseokkie had a lesson last night.” You could feel Chanyeol’s eyes boring a hole in the back of your head. Dae didn’t say anything else. He wanted you to fill in the gaps. True to his shit-stirrer nature.

“He did.” You replied, keeping your focus on the stage. You could play this game as well. Hell, you’d proven to Dae that you could and would put him in his place… but not here. Not under the watchful eyes of the staff. Or Baekhyun, no, that might render the poor guy speechless.

“Did he pass or fail noona?” Chanyeol asked in a hushed voice. Out of the corner of your eye you could see Dae’s impish grin widen as he waited for your answer. In this current setting you didn’t have the same power over them. You couldn’t be seen to be arguing with an idol or acting as though you were higher on the food chain than them.

“He passed.” You replied. “And before you ask for any further details Dae, I’m not going to discuss them. If you are so eager to know then I suggest you talk to Minseok since he has not yet received his reward.” You smiled at him.

The grin on his face lessened. “Ah wae noona, you are no fun.” He crossed his arms dramatically, pouting. As though that kind of behaviour would work on you. “At least tell us how you tailored the lesson for him? It was too late at night for you to be drinking coffee.”

You laughed. “I used alcohol and sporting moments.” The looks on their faces told you that they hadn’t expected that response. “Only mini bar sized drinks, we didn’t get drunk. I had a better idea lined up for him but he didn’t request a lesson before we left Korea so I had to improvise.” You shrugged.

Chanyeol however, found the exchange hilarious. All he needed was a box of popcorn and he’d be set for the day. “So Baekhyun is now the only one of us who doesn’t know about the arrangement?” You nodded. “Baekhyun who has been suggesting that something has been going on since day 1 is somehow the only one left to have a lesson?” You nodded again. Jongdae looked ecstatic at this news.

“No.” You said in warning. The two of them gave you a look that said ‘we have no idea what you’re talking about.’ You sighed, running your hands over your face in frustration. “Please do not spoil this or be mean to him about the lessons.

“Wouldn’t dream of it.” Jongdae grinned. He stood from his chair and looked towards the stage. “Yah Chan, we should go back and see how confused they are going to make us.”

“Guys.” Your words fell on deaf ears as the two troublemakers hastily made their way back to the stage. You really hoped they weren’t going to make problems for you with Minseok or Baekhyun. You’d already figured out that you were going to have to let Baekhyun in on the whole thing slowly so as to not hurt or offend him. He was the only one who you weren’t sure would react positively because he was the only one who had made a pass at you. You replayed Minseok’s words in your head to reassure yourself. Ease Baekhyun into the knowledge, he’ll likely be jealous at first but he’ll be ok once he sees the full picture. You remembered the conversation that you’d had with Baekhyun about the flirting and how the two of you were happy for it to continue and just go with the flow of things as you were both attracted to each other and had excellent chemistry but dating wasn’t really on the table for either of you, you’d both made that clear as neither of you wanted to ruin whatever this strangely suggestive friendship you’d formed was.

Thankfully neither Jongae or Chanyeol were given the opportunity to mess with anyone as they were put to work memorising formation changes. Rehearsal continued as the guys meticulously completed the entire concert run through, only to do the real thing again tonight.

After another couple of hours had passed you came to the decision that you would not be able to be any more prepared for the interviews than you currently were so you packed up the makeshift workspace you’d created for yourself and headed backstage. Rehearsal had ended a little while ago but you’d been so focused on some translations that you hadn’t realised that everyone had left the stage area. Some of the guys were napping, others were exercising, eating, working on other projects or just lounging about. They were all so engrossed in their activities, or slumber, that they didn’t notice your arrival. You took a seat at the end of the room closest to where you currently stood so as to not alert them of your presence. You knew that their fans would energise them once showtime arrived but you figured a little harmless fun now couldn’t hurt. You adjusted your posture and pulled your hat lower to cover your face a bit more, hoping that they might just mistake you for one of the multiple staff members who were backstage. You figured you’d start with Baekhyun. Chatting to him always lifted your spirits and made for fun conversations with everyone else as well. You opened your phone and started a message to him.

[2:27pm] You: Baek, you look tired. Do you need cheering up?

He looked up as soon as he read your message, his eyes scanning the room for your face. He passed over the staff member slouching over their laptop thinking it was someone from the sound desk.

[2:28pm] Baek: How would you know if I looked tired noona, you aren’t in the same room as me.

[2:28pm] Baek: I only accept offers to cheer me up if they come with a rather excellent costume ;)

He leant back in his chair, legs spread wide as he gazed around the room to see if he could spot you responding to him. You managed to remain hidden from him and none of the other members gave his odd movements a second thought. You couldn’t help but stare at his thighs, the muscles flexing under his pants as he moved around on the chair. Baekhyun had fantastic thighs. You stopped yourself from laughing. He was getting frustrated that he couldn’t find you at the same time as flirting with you. You were going to push him to see if he’d get annoyed enough to get up and physically search the room.

He narrowed his eyes and scanned the room as he sent each response, hoping that by sending multiple messages at once he’d catch you.

[2:29pm] Baek: Which there most definitely is and correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure I’ve alluded to it before.

You decided to ignore the last message and just focus on the more playful exchange. You’d never been able to see his face as you messaged him so you were thoroughly enjoying the rush it was giving you.

[2:30pm] You: Your manspreading makes it pretty difficult for someone to sit on your lap

He coughed, apologising to anyone who looked at him, saying that he just needed some water.

[2:30pm] Baek: Are you offering?

[2:31pm] You: Obviously not right now I’m not. Just making an observation is all…

[2:31pm] Baek: Not right now. I’m going to remember that.

[2:31pm] Baek: Alternatively it’s perfect for someone to kneel for me. So much room for activities.

The smirk on his face was unreal. He had officially decided to join in your line of messaging and was trying to up the ante.

[2:32pm] Baek: I’ve had a change of heart and decided I like it in the gutter. I’m going to take up residence here, it’s much more entertaining.

[2:32pm] Baek: Also let’s never forget that you started it.

It would always come back to you being drunk on their couch. They were never letting you live that down. Especially not Baekhyun. Not since he had to be the one to inform you of how you ended up on that couch and the fact that you had been the one to start this game of cat and mouse that the two of you were engaged in.

[2:32pm] You: Trust me I never will. That mortifyingly embarrassing night is now etched into my brain.

[2:32pm] Baek: You want to know what’s seared into my brain?

[2:32pm] You: Enlighten me Baek.

[2:33pm] You: Though I’m pretty sure you will regardless of my answer.

You were expecting something nsfw or something completely absurd. You never knew which way he’d take the conversation. You were not at all prepared for just how direct his reply was.

[2:33pm] Baek: The request to restrain you and have my way with you on my couch, you standing between my legs with no underwear on in the bathroom, you in that motherfucking cheerleader outfit in my room, me pressing you against the wall backstage during comeback week.

You read and reread the messages a few times, the images playing in your mind as well. You knew you’d come close to crossing that line with him a few times but to see it listed out like that… it made you hot. Like the oxygen had been sucked out of the room hot.

“Yah noona. Come sit with us!” Jongdae called out as you moved towards the staff area after the interviews were finished. The guys tended to mix with their staff and each other until about an hour before the concert, then they disappeared to their own room to prepare. They each had their own pre concert rituals and it was a very private thing for them. Naturally you were very surprised that they wanted you to come with them. You shot Junmeyon a look and when he nodded to let you know that they were ok with you joining them you excused yourself and followed them to their green room.

Kyungsoo fell back to wait for you. “How do you think the interview went?” he asked once you’d caught up to him.

You smiled. “You all did really well. The prepared questions were easy enough as you all had time to prepare for them. I was incredibly impressed at how well each of you handled the on the spot questions. You all gave the best answer you could in English. I only had to step in when you weren’t sure of a word which is to be expected for anyone doing an interview in a foreign language.”

He chuckled. “Well all of those interview role plays you made us do, as chaotic as they were - why you ever let Chanyeol and Baekhyun be the interviewers so often is beyond me - they helped us a lot. No one could ask a more random question than what we could come up with ourselves.”

“Noona, this has almost been a holiday for you. You’ve barely had to do any actual work since we arrived.” Sehun commented as you entered their green room.

“That was the point Sehunnie. It proves that I’ve done my job properly and prepared all of you to speak decent English.” You replied.

Sehun smiled up at you from the seat he was in. “Noona you look really pretty today. If I had my camera I’d ask for a picture.”

“Thanks Sehunnie.” You replied. Then he winked at you which was strange. You decided to ignore it and move on.

“Our maknae isn’t wrong. I could just eat you up!” Jongdae exclaimed, his eyes swimming with mischief.

“Someone would need a nurse after that.” Chanyeol chimed in, laughing at his own statement as he gave you a knowing smile.

Jongin smirked. “I think I can speak for most of us when I say we have greatly benefitted from your lessons. I was hot and cold with my English before that but now I feel much more confident.”

“Especially the one on one lessons. Those really got the ments to stick in my mind.” Yixing said with a playful glint in his eyes.

Baekhyun glanced around the room at the knowing looks his members were sending your way and frowned. He had never gotten to the bottom of what went on in those lessons. All he knew is whoever had one was very different afterwards. They were definitely more comfortable around you, some might even say closer than before a one on one lesson.

“Would you agree hyung?” Chanyeol asked Minseok. He shot a knowing glare in Chanyeol & Jongdae’s direction before replying.

“It was an enlightening experience.” He looked at you, his eyes warning you that something was up.

“Baekhyun, are you the only one of us who hasn’t had a lesson?” Jongdae asked, his knowing grin growing. If there was one thing that alerted you to danger it was that grin. It meant mischief for whoever he was targeting, which was clearly Baek.

He nodded. “Yep, saved the best for last. I will have successfully completed two concerts and a bunch of interviews without having needed these magical lessons. Maybe I’m just pro at English guys.” He did his best to sound playful but you could tell he was picking up on Jongdae’s sneaky vibe. He shot finger guns at everyone as he finished speaking.

“I dunno Baek. You might have benefitted from a lesson. You missed a few words last night.” Junmyeon said. He took any opportunity he had to tease Baek while on tour as Baek made it his mission each and every night to make him slip up during his ments to yell at him.

Seven heads nodded along with Junmyeon while you did your best to become invisible. You felt awkward and a bit exposed. You didn’t feel good about this boasting that seemed to be happening. Like you were a commodity rather than a person. They’d made comments that directly related to their rewards or punishments and you weren’t thrilled about it. Kyungsoo noticed your change in body language and placed his hand on your shoulder, the small motion grounding you. He gave your shoulder a light squeeze before he moved past you and tried to change the subject. “Come on guys, we have stretches and vocal warm ups to do. EXO-L are waiting for us, do you want to go out there and have your voice crack or pull a muscle?” Everyone shook their heads. “Didn’t think so. We can continue this later but for now we have to get ready to do our jobs which also happen to be something that we love to do. We get to perform for our fans. Come on!” He looked back at you and you mouthed a thank you at him. He smiled then dragged Jongdae off to start warming their vocal cords up.

Minseok walked towards you and he didn’t look too happy. “Those two have been bugging me all afternoon about our lesson. They wanted to know what I’ve picked as my reward or punishment. I fobbed them off but then they started talking about how wonderful the individual lessons were whenever Baekhyun was nearby. He was already flustered for some reason earlier and I think this stunt is putting him on edge. He doesn’t want to appear jealous but it’s becoming obvious that he just wants to give in and yell at them to shut up but he knows that’s what they want him to do.” He said, irritation clear on his face.

You took a deep breath. “Well that explains what just happened. They tried to get details out of me earlier today as well and I told them not to cause trouble for you or Baek. Clearly they decided not to listen to me.”

“They most definitely did not listen to you. I just hope it doesn’t mess with his performance tonight. You haven’t seen him when he doesn’t perform as well as he wants to. It doesn’t happen often but when it does it sucks the life from the room and it’s like he has a personal storm cloud following him around. You remember how sulky Sehun got when you scolded him?” You nodded. “Baekhyun is so much worse noona.”

“Shit.” You said. “The managers wanted me to give him a lesson after tonight's concert too.” You ran your hands through your hair. “I was working out how to explain this whole thing to him and now those two have gone and made that task so much more difficult for me. I don’t want him to hate me for it.”

“Why do you think he’ll hate you?” Minseok asked.

“Because the relationship I have with him is incredibly flirty and that has been building. Like he knows you and I slept together once, I think he thinks it’s happened more than once but neither of us have said anything. We’ve made it pretty clear that we’re attracted to each other and so I guess I just don’t want him to find out and think I’ve been playing him and have had the same relationship with everyone.” The anxiety in the pit of your stomach started growing and there was nothing you could do to stop the uneasy feeling that was blooming throughout your very being.

Minseok sighed and looked you directly in the eyes. “Apart from this stress relief fuck buddies thing you and I have had have you been with any of them outside of a reward/punishment?”

“No, but -”

“Then I think you’ll be ok. Will he be shocked? Probably. Will it take him a minute to get his head around the concept? Definitely. Will he get mad? Maybe Will he think less of you? Doubtful. He has a temper and it will probably come out, especially if he’s not in the best mood to begin with but you just have to emphasise to him that whilst you’ve had sexual encounters with the other members, it’s been only for the one on one lesson, so it was a one time thing. With me, you can explain what we’ve been doing. He’ll understand. We’ve all had the kind of arrangement that you and I have at some point over the years, Baekhyun included. It might just take a little bit of yelling and unfortunately cruel words before he gets there.” He smiled softly at you. “But if i know one thing about you, it’s that you’ll forgive an idiot for saying cruel things to you when they don’t mean them. Talking about myself in case you needed that reminder.”

You laughed softly. You had not forgotten the way Minseok had acted when he was upset and hurt. How he lashed out at you with cruel words. You’d stormed out and been furious with him but you had forgiven him when he arrived at your door unable to look at you while he apologised repeatedly. You stepped forward and gave him a hug. “Thank you.” You felt his strong arms embrace you. You were still anxious about telling Baekhyun everything but Minseok’s words had halted its spread.

He chucked in your ear. “Just make sure you tell him how Dae & Yeol continued to bring up the lessons whenever he was around and that they egged on the members to join in the discussion. He’ll forget to be mad at you after that. Then we’ll just have to stop him from murdering them.”

You laughed properly at that remark and wriggled your way out of his embrace. “Never a dull moment with you lot. Now go, you need to warm up too.” You spun him around and pushed him further into the room. “I’m not going to have you be sub par tonight because you had to give me a pep talk. Do me proud and use what you learned in your lesson during your ments.”

You yelled into the room “Fighting!” and before anyone could respond you left. You felt like you’d already taken up a lot of their preparation time. You made your way back to the staff area and grabbed some food as the sound techs made sure that your earpiece and microphone worked. You were using a slightly altered system tonight. Something the managers had requested. If someone forgot their line or messed it up you would be able to communicate with them via the earpiece so that they could just repeat the words and their fans would be none the wiser. If for any reason that didn’t work then you were to speak into the mic which would sound throughout the arena. No one had any idea if the earpieces would work as they hadn’t been ready to test during rehearsal.

The concert was as magical as the night before, even if you were mad at a few of them. Everyone looked phenomenal, the costuming for this concert was top tier. They all sang beautifully as was expected of the vocal powerhouse that is EXO. And they all danced with power, shaking the stage with their charisma and talent. You could feel the love pouring off them as they performed as well as the joy. Their jobs were difficult, more than fans might think, but they never let it show. You were pretty sure most fans were not aware that there were respirators backstage to help the guys catch their breath after the intense dance numbers. The moment they crossed the threshold between where fans could and could not spot them, they allowed any pains or difficulties to show. Chanyeol nearly fainted after the opening songs but managed to pull himself together and Jongin grimaced as he walked off stage which resulted in him being whisked off to make sure his ankle was fine. You were informed that Chanyeol often went too hard at the beginning of a concert and forgot to breathe properly. Hardships aside, they lived to be on the stage. It was their pride and showing the fruits of their labour to their fans, seeing the outpouring of love and adoration back from the fans and the energy they got from that that kept them doing this. They truly loved their jobs and it showed.

The first ment went by smoothly, as did the one after. The final ment is when it happened. Baekhyun had held it together all night. He’d taken a bit longer to find his words tonight but he’d still gotten through his ments without needing your assistance. Right up until the ending ment. He started to speak then stopped abruptly. His face hid nothing, he wasn’t stuck on a word but rather had forgotten what he was supposed to say next. He tried to play up the comedy to make light of the mistake but Minseok’s words from earlier drifted through your mind.

You spoke the next line into the earpiece then watched the monitor to see if he could hear you. The sound techs were geniuses, you decided, as you saw recognition appear on his face and he made a big show about remembering his line. He got through the remainder of the ment and they all said their goodbyes. You were unsure if he’d be in a mood or not given how he’d tried to make light of his fuck up while onstage. You’d get your answer soon enough. You could hear their footsteps descending from the stage area, moving towards you. They stopped at the first group of staff to hand over their mics, earpieces, packs and in ears. You watched everyone smile as they interacted with the staff. Everyone except Baekhyun. He silently handed over everything then pushed past everyone, headed straight to the green room.

The guys all disappeared to have quick showers so that they weren’t too sweaty for the van ride back to the hotel. Baekhyun was like a ghost. He wouldn’t speak to any of the staff and the few members that tried to speak to him got snapped at or ignored. It was such a stark contrast to how he normally was that everyone noticed. The mood backstage wasn’t as fun as last night. Tonight people just got their jobs done as quickly as possible and then everyone left for the hotel. You rode back with the other staff tonight, complimenting them on their hard work with make up, costumes, choreo, sound, lighting and production. They gave you a lot of praise too, impressed by how far the group’s English skills had progressed.

Once you arrived back at the hotel you headed to your room to shower and change, shooting the managers a message that you’d try to complete Baekhyun’s lesson tonight if he was up to it. They replied and wished you luck. You had planned his lesson out but you weren’t sure if you’d be able to do as planned, not if his mood was so dark. Once you were showered and had fresh clothes on you sent Chanyeol a message.

[10:15pm] You: I’m going to need your room key.

[10:15pm] Yeol: Sure noona, but why? Are you setting up a treat for me because I did so well today?

[10:15pm] You: No. I’m going to talk to Baek. The managers asked me to complete his lesson tonight.

[10:16pm] Yeol: Oof, good luck. He’s in a rotten mood. We might have taken the teasing a little far earlier...

[10:16pm] You: You think?! I believe I warned both you and Dae to not be cruel or interfere with the concert. Now idk if the teasing is what caused him to mess up or if it was just going to happen anyway but I still have to try to do this lesson, regardless of his mood.

[10:16pm] Yeol: I’ll bring the key down to you now. Baek’s just showering at the moment so maybe head up 10 minutes after I give you the key? That should give him enough time.

[10:16pm] You: Thank you. I don’t know how long this lesson will take given the mood he’s in so why don’t you take my room for the night?

[10:17pm] Yeol: He has no idea how lucky he is if you’re going to spend the night with him just to make sure he’s ok. If he’s awful to you just leave though. He can be a piece of work when he gets in these moods. If I’m asleep just wake me and I’ll head back to my room.

[10:18pm] You: Thanks. You aren’t off the hook for your part in this whole drama yet though.

You tossed your phone onto the bed and waited for Chanyeol to make his way down to your room. You had a bag by the door ready to take up for Baek’s lesson should that go ahead. You hoped you were ready for this version of Baekhyun because given the warnings you’d received from Minseok and Chanyeol, you weren’t looking forward to being in a room alone with him. A stark comparison from earlier in the day.

The world went white, like it was all too bright to see.

It made a person's eyes ache.

But they could hear. Echoes. The sound of children laughing. To them, they spoke a foreign language. Maybe if they knew Japanese they could pull bits and pieces out, but much of it seemed irrelevant until one word stood out among the others, repeated over and over like a mantra.

Hafu, hafu, hafu..

The images appeared again, growing slowly more clear and distinct. A young boy with silver hair that fell nearly over his eyes was curled up with a fence at his back, sandwiched between it and what looked at first glance to be a circle of similarly aged schoolchildren. But despite their words it was soon clear that they weren't actually people, just child-sized dolls standing with an arm held out and pointing at him. They never moved, just looked on with the stare of glass eyes as their cruel sounding chant continued to echo.

Finally the boy covered his ears with his hands and yelled out, power radiating outward from him in all directions like a wave.

The chanting stopped.

The scene shifted and they were standing in a place that looked identical to the lobby of the Nursery. The boy was there again, standing between a man and a woman. Opposite them was another, taller blonde man. He looked professional, dressed like a doctor or a scientist. The boy stared at the floor.

The tall man knelt down to his level and smiled, but it was the face of a monster. There were dark pits where the eyes should have been, a red gash for a mouth. And yet his voice was normal aside from the fact that his English had a distinct accent. Scottish, perhaps?

The boy reached up for his parents' hands, curling small fingers around the hands of mannequins -- like one might find in a shop. They had no faces. The man smiled his red gash smile and set a hand on the boy's head, mussing his hair. "Min-jun," he said.

Min-jun.

Another room, another table. Strapped down. This one was stark white. It smelled like ammonia. It smelled like death. The machines beeped, beeped, beeped. The boy's fingers tapped out rhythms against the metal tabletop, keeping time with the machine. He counted them to pass the time while an IV line dripped, pouring some experimental drug into his system.

One, two, three..

Eighteen, nineteen, twenty..

Subject Twenty..

The lobby again. Doorways three leading to.. who knew? In each one of them stood the same boy, older now. Familiar. The leftmost had cold, hard, dead eyes. The sort that seemed to look through a person as if they were nothing and no one. Just an obstacle to pass through.

The one in the middle looked uncertain, fearful. Indecisive. Like he might cut and run at any moment, torn between the others somehow.

The one on the right hid his shame behind hands that covered his face though they could do nothing to hide the fact that he was sobbing, his body trembling as it was wracked with emotion. Approaching any of them wouldn't change the fact that beyond the doorways lay a great icy landscape that defied logic and physics. The 'sky' was the great chasm of deep space, dotted with strange suns that burned black. The 'sea' around the ice was like that great dark void made fluid; oily and thick and every so often a long tendril would stretch up and thrash about before sinking back into the darkness.

The three identical boys crowded around an ornate looking table, their hands on a box wrapped in ribbon and gilded paper. A voice that was somehow at once a whisper but almost painfully loud to listen to spoke. Remember. . r̗̱̲̣̺͞e̲̻̯̮̘͞m͕̫e̴̼̩͍̭̝͚m̞̝͉͇̤̙b̹̳̥ḙ̼̦̞̞͘r̙̖ͅ . . .

Images flashed like someone changing the channels on a television. An Orochi containment unit, the interior glass smeared with blood. The boy's fingers bled from clawing at it.

Rows of dead eyed children sitting at tables, eating food that was set before them mechanically. Eating was just another task. Meaningless. Empty. Every time the image would change there seemed to be fewer and fewer children left.

The interior of a room that had once been white but now its walls were painted red with blood. Angry screams cracked glass windows that looked in on the space, the intensity of the power threatening to shatter them completely.

Then, the room filled with music. An eerie song. The boy's body went slack, docile, and the power died away. Still, they dragged him away like an animal. No comfort, only more solitude. Alone with thoughts. Voices. Whispers. Not the Dreamers but the sort of whispers that could plague a person with madness, given time..

The three boys at the table tore the paper and the ribbon away from the box, tossing it aside forgotten as they lifted the lid and reached inside..

The image distorted then cleared, once again revealing the three. A great black beast towered over them, its call unnatural and strange. Four wings were folded against its sides.

They didn't need reminding then.

The one who had been crying was bloodied, maimed. Behind him were red footprints tracked from each painful step. Something seemed wrong, like all of him wasn't there. The hands that hung limp at his sides were the same. Wrong. Fingers missing.

The uncertain one was already on his knees, his forehead pressed against the ice. He was whole but his hands were reaching out in front of him, seeking as if hoping someone would take them. Take him. Save him, perhaps? The cold-eyed one looked over at the others and sank to his knees slowly, a smile curling the corners of his lips. The bloodied one dropped as if to do so was a great relief..

Dark laughter rumbled, the voice distorted. At times it sounded feminine, other times masculine. Was it Her? Or something else?

A vast crater in the ice now. In the centre, a glowing core encircled by nodes that played a haunting melody. There was only one of him now, standing there. There was a sense of.. familiarity. As if he had been here before and was now there once more. Blackened veins stood out against pale skin. Still, he turned and looked back before his image flickered and he vanished for a moment, reappearing beside a weakened node in a burst of purple energy.

His voice echoed in the space now just as the voices had before. But they faded in and out like someone had simply pulled snippets.

"I don't care about before. I won't free you now. I can't free you because I know why I have to do this now. Why I'm here.."

"... I have to save this world but not because I live in it. Who cares if I live in it?"

"I have to save it because they live in it. He lives in it. My-.. father. My real father!"

"Lee Jong-dae was just an uncorrupted name in a file! He is nothing and no one!"

"D'ante is the only father I know, the only parent I've ever had! The only person who cares!"

Everything froze like it was all just a movie someone could simply hit pause on and then a crack appeared as if in glass, distorting the scene as cracks seemed to appear in reality itself. That voice spoke again, leaving him with some threat that one couldn't make out though they would feel a dark, uncomfortable energy. Like one felt around the Filth only magnified..

And then there was nothing save the sound of machinery and the strange sound and feel of the breach. The Carpathians again, in what seemed to be proper reality again. It -- whatever it was -- seemed to be over. Finally. At least, for the others.

It would be a few minutes longer before Jongdae seemed to return to himself fully..
