JOHNNY WEISSMULLER
JOHNNY WEISSMULLER
2 June 1904 - 20 January 1984
TARZAN
Johnny Weissmuller started competing in swimming competitions at the age of 16 and won numerous competitions. He won five gold medals at the Olympics from 1924 and 1928 and gained world records in just 9 years.
He retired from competing swimming in 1929, and worked as a swimming coach. He then went on to work as a swimwear model. He then began a film career playing Tarzan wearing just a fig leaf between 1932-1948 in 12 MGM films. The Tarzan films were based on the stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs. He felt Hollywood had previously dumbed down Tarzan and he wanted to bring a new and better image to the jungle hero.
Weissmuller (Peter Weissmuller) was born in Hungary (Romania) and moved to the US at a young age. He was the son of Austrian immigrants. Weissmuller was married five times and had three children. In 1927, he saved 11 people from drowning from a boat accident.
From 1974 his health started declining and had a serious heart condition. He suffered a series of strokes and died in 1984, aged 79 from pulmonary edema (excess fluid in the lungs). He was buried at the Valley of the Light Cemetery, as his coffin was lowered a recording of his Tarzan yell was played three times, at his own request.

It's National Golf Lovers Day! Although Lucy would never say she was a "lover" of the sport or that she was ever very good at it, she certainly had some practice while living in Palm Springs between the 9th and 18th fairways at Thunderbird Golf Course. In 1956, when Desi opened his Western Hills Hotel in Indian Wells, he opened a 9 hole golf course along with it. Desi played in the first ever Bob Hope Golf Classic in 1960 and hosted the tournament many times at his Indian Wells resort well into the 1970's. Lucille's second husband, Gary Morton was an avid golfer and in fact, his third wife Susie was a professional golfer. "Desi wasn't really a very good golfer. But we would always stop at Phil's (Harris) house along the fairway to pick up another bottle." —William Asher (First photo is Lucy with Johnny Weissmuller of 'Tarzan' fame.) #lucilleball #golfloversday #nationalgolfday #nationalgolfloversday #fore #golf #fairway #golftournament #golftournaments #desiarnaz #johnnyweissmuller #progolfers #desertlife https://www.instagram.com/p/CF6MPiOH2_A/?igshid=121gkxulx9rzn

My Year of the Book - Day 55: I may have missed out on the real heyday of Saturday movie matinees (with an A and B feature, a cartoon, newsreel and at least one serial), but I more than made up for it via my local hometown library, which lent out 8-millimeter projectors and the films to go with it. It was in those pre-teen days before channels such as Turner Classic Movies that I filled many of my late nights watching shortened versions of Universal’s classic horror flicks and the celluloid heroes of my Dad’s era, such as Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and Lord Greystoke, alias Tarzan. I’d seen every episode of the late 1960s TV series starring Ron Ely, and it never bothered me that more than a dozen men played the lead thru the mid-60s (and a few more since). In fact, it was fun to compare them, and pick out your favorites. These two books were a big help in keeping everything straight (A first-world problem, I know). Both were published around the time and publicity of the new TV series, with “The Big Swingers” coming out in 1967 and Gabe Essoe’s “Tarzan of the Movies” following a year later. “Swingers” more than doubles as a biography of Tarzan’s creator, Edgar Rice Burroughs (who led a fascinating life), and it’s author, Robert W. Fenton, took his research to a whole new level, actually buying the Burroughs estate in Tarzana (named for the character) and many of ERB’s files. Both books are chock full of action photos and production information, and Fenton’s bio also details all 26 of ERB’s Tarzan books, which he wrote from 1912-1940. No slouch behind a typewriter, ERB also wrote 11 under-appreciated “John Carter of Mars” tales and 30 other novels. My favorite Tarzans? In no particular order: Lex Barker, Mike Henry, Johnny Weissmuller and Ron Ely. The worst? Tarzan #3, P. Dempsey Tabler, a 41-year old former boxer turned opera singer with a gut and a toupee who made one silent serial in 1920. #tarzan #movieseries #edgarriceburroughs #booklover #booksofinstagram #bookworm #bookish #bookgeek #movieheroes #bibliophile #mylibrary #yearofthebook #research #book #reading #childhoodmemories #saturdaymatinee #biography #ronely #mikehenry #lexbarker #johnnyweissmuller

Johnny Weissmuller (2 June 1904 – 20 January 1984) was an Austro-Hungarian-born American competition #swimmer and #actor, best known for playing #Tarzan in films of the #1930s and #1940s and for having one of the best competitive swimming records of the 20th century. #Weissmuller was one of the world's fastest swimmers in the 1920s, winning five #Olympic gold medals for swimming and one bronze medal for water polo. He was the first to break the one minute barrier for 100-meter freestyle, and the first to swim 440-yard freestyle under five minutes. He won fifty-two U.S. national championships, set more than 50 world records (spread over both freestyle and backstroke), and was purportedly undefeated in official competition for the entirety of his competitive career. After retiring from competitions, he became the sixth actor to portray Edgar Rice Burroughs's ape man, Tarzan, a role he played in 12 motion pictures. Dozens of other actors have also played Tarzan, but Weissmuller is by far the best known. His character's distinctive #Tarzanyell is still often used in films. ❤️#johnnyweissmuller #tarzan #nickcolport #nickcelbs #portrait #drawing #art #korimlizjohnnyweissmuller
