If you may be familiar with monarchies you must know that a king needs his heirs and heiresses! Someone as handsome as John needs as many concubines as he can to continue the Homestuck kingdom’s divine crown! Unfortunately John’s wives, Vriska, Roxy, Terezi, and the like, have all left to go on holiday!

As such John has chosen YOU THE READER to be paired with him for his birthday, and I can verify that John x You, the MSPA reader, is better than Davekat.

hi mmmmalo !!! idk if you’ve mentioned this before but can u tell us ur experience w the homestuck fandom and ur first read? i believe u started the re-read after the comic proper had ended, but im not sure abt what happened before that. what made u want to do a reread? and, follow-up, how much do u think the fandom/live interactions w the comic informed the plot? thanks :)

I was introduced to Homestuck at my ex's graduation party! Baptized by a voice dub of the panty raid comic, summer 2012. My ex was part of the Hetalia migration and was enjoying the scene for its rp opportunities; in that practical spirit, I was advised skip to Act 5 for the trolls. I did this, got very confused, and started reading again from the beginning. Got onto Tumblr after discovering BKEW's theories on the MSPA forums and spent a lot of time mired in classpect analysis.

Fast forward to 2016, I reread the story and got frustrated with how classpect seemed to be reaching the limits of its explanatory power for lingering mysteries. A mutual pointed out some Nabokov references in Act 1, so I read Pale Fire to see if it could help make sense of things. It didn't especially, but I loved the book and read an essay (x) by Nabokov afterward that persuaded me that a close, thorough study of a single text could function as an English education. (Tantalizing because I had dropped out of engineering school that year and was beginning to take the possibility of being an artist seriously.) So I started another reread in 2017, bumbling my way through way more new information than I bargained for...

And here we are, 4 years later.

Wrt your follow up: In the same way that Hussie would cherry pick reader commands that suited the story they wanted to tell, maintaining an illusion of influence, I tend to think to whatever extent the story's form was influenced by (or responding to, or stealing from) fandom, it would be an overstatement to say we collectively decided the plot's trajectory. Still smile every time I remember John arriving several updates late with a Starbucks though

Aspect

For the second time in Act 6 Act 2, uranianUmbra discusses the aspect system. Aspect is a feature of verbs in many languages which denotes the internal temporal structure of a situation and the relevant perspective on it, for example the English progressive tenses which focus on the internal phase of a verbal situation between its beginning and its end. Sorry, sorry, I just felt like having a little fun with you, reader. I won’t infodump about linguistics on this blog. I have a different blog, @languagefeatures for doing that.

Game roles for the various players of SBURB are expressed as “CLASS of ASPECT”. So far, we have seen the class/aspect of the following characters mentioned: John (Heir of Breath), Dave (Knight of Time), Rose (Seer of Light), Jade (Witch of Space), Vriska (Thief of Light), Gamzee (Bard of Rage), Terezi (Seer of Mind), Aradia (Maid of Time). We also know that Kanaya is a Sylph of something, presumably Space, but I can’t recall if that was actually spelled out. [EDIT: confirmed on page 2565. Thanks @arrghus]

On page 4514, UU introduces the concept of “passive (+)” and “active (-)” classes.

UU: classes always come in +/- pairs, with significant disparity between them. while a rogUe is passive, a thief woUld be its far more active coUnterpart. the rogUe and thief classes tend to be assigned to females. not exclUsively, bUt commonly! other classes lean more toward male assignment, while others are exclUsively male, and jUst as many are exclUsively female. like my class. ^u^ that's a bit of a tangent thoUgh. to answer yoUr qUestion aboUt being a rogUe, i shoUld tell yoU both classes in +/- pairs tend to have very similar descriptions. in this case, a rogUe or a thief is "one who steals." qUite simple, really! bUt whether the class is + or - makes all the difference. it is a great indicator as to how a hero will make Use of the aspect.

The assigning of positive with passive seemed odd at first, but eventually I got the idea that it evokes the “positively charged” protons and “negatively charged” electrons in atomic chemistry. You could also read it as a take on the traditional Chinese association of yin (dark/passive/female) and yang (active/bright/male). On page [4564], UU says,

UU: again, sUrface meaning of classes and aspects can be deceptive. a prince is a destroyer class. it is very far on the active side of the scale. its more passive coUnterpart woUld be the bard class. both of these are exclUsively designated for male players. to Understand a hero's capabilities, it always helps to search for the right way to parse the class/aspect pair into a more explicit statement. for instance, being active, a prince coUld be viewed as "one who destroys x, or caUses destrUction throUgh x," if x is the aspect. while the more passive bard coUld be seen as "one who allows x to be destroyed, or invites destrUction throUgh x," as if by the will of the aspect.

Given this info, the attentive reader knows that Gamzee’s class is “one who allows rage to be destroyed, or invites destrUction throUgh rage,” or whatever the word ‘rage’ alludes to, since the names of the aspects are not always straightforward (breath seemingly meaning wind, etc.). That’s interesting. I can’t help but remember how he induced a lot of anger in Terezi, eventually leading to her losing a lot.

It also makes me wonder how the other classes shake out. We’ve seen how the Seer of Mind’s powers work, predicting the effects of choices, we’ve seen how the Thief of Light steals fortune to get at the desired outcome, but not how the powers of the other characters are tied to their class/aspect. I could probably look at the MSPA wiki, but I want my knowledge to come directly from the source.

Pesterquest -Beginning of the continuation of the “end”, fan frustration, and Lore

Let's get started with the prologue X) and one of John's path! Ohhhhh back at the Felt manor, with the WORST END song, very eerie and catchy.

God they read several times the epilogues, wow.. I had a melt down when I try to read the Candy path, but I got better after a good night sleep.

Nothing.. this can't be all, no.

Exactly! That's the problem. Even if things went ape shit, it needed some closure. Not an endless cliffhanger.

Oh man, that's the readers thoughts exactly. We all (at least those who read them) know the feeling. MSPA reader is made to be relatable. They are us, and their own entity at the same time.

They are so pissed at Doc Scratch. Understandable U_U Yo lad ya didn't take ANY break?! That's not good!! While reading the epilogues: take breaks, stay hydrated, don't read it in one row. Go out, it isn’t healthy :/

Uhhh~ this anger, I get it. But Scratch is…gone. Since a while now. And yeah the whole thing about Pesterquest is quite straight forward. If there is content that you didn't enjoyed, or if you want more content: create it.

While he was away, you and your best friends (consisting of: John Egbert, Rose Lalonde, and Jade Harley) decided to host a Secret Santa, and the gift giving is to be held at your home. Y'all somehow managed to convince your other friends to join, as well. Everyone seemed to have picked their special someone's while you picked your best friend, Jade Harley. You didn't mind. You could read her like an open book, so it was easy for you to get a gift for her.

Now, it's Christmas Eve and Dave arrived from his business trip. You both had a quite heartfelt reunion. Probably.

(Sorry for spamming a lot, I enjoy saying my opinions) Although I haven't followed Pesterquest, I feel it did Dave and Dirk's characters well, in an odd sense. Also, wasn't there a lack of Davekat there? Also who would you prefer seeing Dave with?

Davekat was actually present. It was shown via Karkat's route, where his good ending is MSPA Reader bringing Karkat to Dave's house. Which makes absolutely zero sense, since his introduction was mostly to set up being parallel with John. The reason why they did that is because they want to retcon the DaveJade that was mentioned in Jade's route. Where it was shown that Dave really wanted to see her and her island. When Bec finally got him, John, and Rose to her home, Jade was in tears of joy. Dave commented that he couldn't bear to see her cry. In the end scene, the two were shown exchanging fursonas. Showing they have grown closers than ever. WhatPumpkin team were actually pissed at David Turnbull, who wrote it. They didn't want DaveJade to be canon. So they had Aysha U. Farah to put it back to Davekat. To redeem himself, the writer had to make TAVROS a chaser to Vriska, because of his and Kate Mitchell's bias love to Vriska. Lord knows that Kate's name is still credited for Vriska route, despite that she ADVERTISED HER NUDES TO MINORS ON HER TWITTER ACCOUNT. She is removed for working on Homestuck 2 and moved onto a pseudo Twitter account after being called out on what I mentioned, but I am still peeved that her name is on Pesterquest as of posting this. Best you don't play Pesterquest. If you have to, at least only play the Beta Kids routes. They are close to a good canon ending for the four main humans we knew and love. But yeah, Dave is best to be with Jade. Dave x Jade really is the true endgame couple of Homestuck. You can see my many posts about how much I think DaveJade is great and how they work perfectly together. The two really have good chemistry and would be there to support each other. Jade would bring out the sunshine in his life while Dave can help show her the unknown world that she couldn't get to see for so long. Time and Space are complimentary to each other. Red and bright green are good color pairs too. It's like fuckin' Christmas up in here! Plus, she would grow up to be a hot grandma in a different timeline. You know how Dave loves his moms and grandmoms. So he gets a win win when being with Jade! You may call it bias, but I don't give a fuck. The real Dave we know would be with Jade. The current Dave in Epilogues and Homestuck 2, dubbed as Jimbo, is with Karkat and gets mistagged as Davekt.
