sorry this is referring to an old post of yours but I loved your post on why Proctor in The Crucible isn’t the villain. so much of The Crucible is about good vs evil, being damned vs not and I believe that you as an audience are brought into the story when you decide for yourself who you persecute, who you condemn. Proctor’s character is so intertwined with his “good person” arc, or else what is that last act about (“I think I do see some shred of good in John Proctor”)? because that’s the point. it’s not just about good or evil as two binary things, it’s also about redemption. John definitely did really bad things but, as you said, you can condemn those things while understanding that it doesn’t define him. I don’t think Miller wrote the Crucible with the intention of defining people in boxes of good and bad or unchangeability
This is such a delightful ask to wake up to! Don’t apologize for it being about an old post—you have no idea how happy you’ve made me with it. You get it! You get it! I have little else to say other than let me give you sparkly gold stars for media literacy:
🌟🌟🌟
Okay, that “little else to say” part was not quite true. I might be rambling, but you have come past my drive-thru and the fact that you did suggests that you’d appreciate this, so let me reiterate something I’ve said in a reblog to that post (because Tumblr and your ask notified me only about your appreciation of the original): that last act hits so much harder when you interpret him through a BPD lens. His splitting is and always has been a lying distortion no matter what he’s done! (It’s right there. If you read my post, you’ll see that it’s right there in the text, but weirdly enough, it gets lost in most actual performances because it’s not a lens most of his actors are looking for—likely owing to the fact that the show predates the disorder’s codification. Some of his symptoms also manifest differently than we’d usually think of them because while anxiously-attached, he’s not in a time and place that affords him openness of expression there. All this to say that I am anxiously hoping for the day that my hypothetical ASL-integrated production becomes reality so that I can make this part of its canon—I’ve written about the symbolism in how main John and his signer relate to each other, and the six-part staging descriptions are readable elsewhere on my blog—but in the meantime, I will gladly settle for reading a currently-nonexistent AO3 fic that tags it or even simply expanding the Tumblr circle who supports it. RIP Coat Guy/Signer for Proctor, you would have loved DBT.)
Thank you so much, @counterculturecryer, and I hope you have a GREAT day! 🥰🥰

Abigail Williams is not the villain, she’s the victim
I’m specifically referring to the one from The Crucible.
Abigail is just a scared child. She was seventeen years old and was sexually abused. She worked for John Proctor. She says it herself “I look for the John Proctor who took me from my sleep and put knowledge into my heart.” He instigated the affair.
He took a weak helpless child and Assaulted her. “It was in the old days, they had different standards 🙄” The Crucible was written in the 50’s, Miller should’ve known better. All he did was make a rape victim (a minor when the rape happened mind you) into the villain. Plus Miller said in ‘why I wrote the crucible’ that he saw himself in Proctor. Ya know, the groomer/pedophile.
I was recently reminded of the crucible. When I read it in school we’d have discussions about the various characters and events and Abby was (and still is) my favorite. There were so many people who hated her though so this post is for her.
I could rant about my darling Abby for hours trust me so if people want a part two put it in the comments or send me a message.
Also Abby or Parris should have been the main character.

john proctor is the villain had a really striking message near the end about how we can go on about feminism & believing victims but once the accused is somebody the community likes then all that shit goes out the window. ok

In Defense of Abigail Williams
In The Crucible, there are many cited reasons as to why the residents of Salem would have turned on each other. Mostly coveting land, resenting others for their unearned authority, their income, their daringness to read a book at night while being a woman.
The need to assert power, and put others 'in their place'.
All of which are real examples from history. The one that’s not based on fact is the affair between a ‘respectable farmer’ and a teen girl; John Proctor and Abigail. Yet this is the one story most associated with The Crucible. Of course, it’s more dramatic, it has sex appeal, it’s easier to stage, it’s relatable; anyone can understand the heartbreak of a 17 year old girl being told she isn’t loved back despite how much she loves.
Reading it the first time, as a 16 year old, like I'm sure many girls did, I poured over the text to look for any reason to be on Abigail’s side in this story. Because she’s a teenager and John is 35, and I was reading the play for the first time in 2013, around the time of Weinstein and #MeToo, I really wanted to find evidence in the text that she was a victim.
But frankly there’s little to sympathize with, she’s written as the villain. She tries to get people killed, she doesn’t seem to care about anything or value anyone other than John. She really only acts out of jealousy and hatred.
Maybe it’s because this specificity of Arthur Miller’s historical liberties have always rubbed me the wrong way; after all, the real Abigail Williams was 11 years old at the time of the trials. And John was in his 60s. And while Abigail did accuse John of witchcraft, it was actually Mercy Lewis who first pointed her finger towards the Proctor family, at Elizabeth.
Those facts have sat with me for years, the uncertainty of why a group of barely pre-teen girls would so ruthlessly attempt to get a man hanged for a crime, he not only didn’t commit, but didn’t exist. Since they wouldn’t be beneficiaries to his land or income, what they would gain from tarnishing his reputation as a godly man.
My mind went to a place much more sinister, after all, every night I was reading tweets detailing serial abusers, from the POV of their multiple victims, many of whom mention being too scared to share their experiences for years or decades, due to the power and influence of the men they accused.
I’ll never know what happened in Salem, but I I know I’ll always read the Crucible through the lens of the year I read it.

'If you're innocent you have nothing to worry about' KEVIN YOU'RE GAY.
Kevin the cop strikes again
Cheryl is a lavender menace
With the condition of Lesbianism
Cheryl. Talk with your friends. Tell them what's happening
HIRAM IS HIRAM FOREVER
Hiram should also have gay sex tbh
I get that Hiram is possibly trying to be a good person but not with that villain voice
OH THANK GOD CHERYL'S TELLING PEOPLE
EVELYN
Ngl I love her purple outfit
She's dyed her hair as well, this is her villain era
Archie's so stupid (affectionate), he's not gonna know people are manipulating manipulating him
Mr Fieldstone was such a dick for so long but this episode and last he's been just some quirky old dude?
Jughead's gonna get investigated for communism
Betty in her Gossip Girl era
WHEN I SAID ARCHIE'S POETRY THING WAS JUST HSM I DIDN'T REALISE FRANK IS JUST COACH BOLTON
Oh god Archie's gonna think Veronica's a spy no
Oh so the teacher was actually a communist
Jughead+Ethel dealer era
Choni and Clevin lavender marriage era 💜
This is not a Hiram redemption, I don't care what people are saying. He's just being manipulative and is desperate
