Why the American Silver Eagle Coin is a Must-Have for Investors and Collectors
The American Silver Eagle Coin is more than just a piece of metal; it’s a treasure that reflects the pride and strength of the United States. First minted in 1986, this coin has become a favorite among collectors and investors alike due to its striking design, high silver content, and strong historical significance. Whether you are a seasoned investor or a newcomer to precious metals, the American Silver Eagle Coin offers both value and beauty in one iconic package.
A Timeless Symbol of American Heritage
The American Silver Eagle Coin was born out of the Liberty Coin Act of 1985, which authorized the U.S. Mint to strike a silver coin to be used for investment. These coins contain one troy ounce of pure silver, making them not just a collector's item but also a sound investment. As silver continues to be an important and sought-after commodity, the coin remains a prime choice for those looking to diversify their portfolios and invest in tangible assets.
The U.S. Mint’s design of the American Silver Eagle Coin also speaks volumes about the nation's history and ideals. The coin features an image of Lady Liberty walking across the obverse, draped in the American flag, with a torch and olive branch, symbolizing both freedom and peace. This striking image is a reissue of the original "Walking Liberty" design by Adolph A. Weinman, which first appeared on the U.S. half-dollar coin in 1916.
Expert Craftsmanship and Iconic Design
One of the most compelling aspects of the American Silver Eagle Coin is its craftsmanship. The coin features two prominent designs: on the obverse, we have the graceful depiction of Lady Liberty, while on the reverse, the coin showcases an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch—symbols of America’s strength and peace. This design, created by John Mercanti, also includes the national motto "E Pluribus Unum," signifying unity in diversity.
For collectors, these designs not only offer aesthetic pleasure but also a connection to America’s history. Each release has the potential to become a future treasure, as limited-edition versions, such as proof and uncirculated coins, often appreciate in value over time.
The American Silver Eagle Coin as a Smart Investment
In addition to being a numismatic marvel, the American Silver Eagle Coin is an excellent option for those looking to invest in silver. With its high purity of 99.9%, the coin represents a secure store of value that can hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty. Since its introduction, it has become one of the most trusted and liquid forms of silver investment in the world.
Investors can buy these coins as part of their strategy to protect their wealth, while also benefiting from the growth in silver prices. Moreover, the government-backed status of the American Silver Eagle Coin ensures that it is recognized and respected globally, providing investors with a level of confidence that other forms of silver bullion may lack.
Conclusion
The American Silver Eagle Coin is not only a wise investment but also a beautiful piece of American history. Whether you're looking to grow your wealth, add to your coin collection, or simply own a piece of American heritage, the American Silver Eagle Coin offers unmatched value. With its rich design, historical significance, and silver content, it’s no wonder this coin continues to be a beloved treasure for generations of collectors and investors.

American Eagle Silver Coins – A Short Intro to a Rich Heritage
The American Eagle Silver Coin is a fascinating piece to have in any coin collectors, collection. Anybody who is interested in the art of coin collecting or numismatics, whether it be for business purposes because these coins experience a steady increase in monetary value over time, or just for enthusiasts and hobbyists who are in it for the fun of collecting pieces of history. An american eagle silver dollar possesses both historical and monetary value which is a reason why they are such a fine piece for coin collectors to have in their personal collection. There is an innate beauty that can be found in these wonderful pieces of art and Americana. Be it in mint condition or vintage, there is a beauty that can be found in all of them that draws people into its beauty like a magnet.
American Eagle Silver coins were authorized by Congress in the year 1985, got minted in the year 1986, they are made out of .999 pure silver, its purity is what makes it very valuable in the market. It contains copper and one troy ounce of silver for strength and durability.
The image of the Walking Liberty was designed by the sculptor Adolph Weinmann which was taken from the half-dollar from 1916. It is featured in the front of the coin and it symbolizes freedom. On the other side is the famous eagle and shield which was designed by sculptor and engraver John Mercanti, representing strength. The thirteen stars represent the thirteen original colonies depicting all the ideals of the united states.
A good example of an American Eagle silver dollar coin is the Peace Silver coin. On the reverse side features a resting eagle perched on the peak of a mountain, casting its gaze upon the brilliant rays of the sun rising on the horizon. As opposed to the image of an eagle holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other one, here the eagle is holding only the olive branch which symbolizes peace.
Another example would be the more sought after famous Morgan Silver Dollar. This has an image of a flying eagle on the reverse side of the coin. The eagle has both the olive branch and the arrows in both its talons. This can be identified with the wings of the eagle being done in a different fashion which is held closer to the eagle’s body. There are only a small few of this coin that are in existence, making it one of the most valuable American Eagle Silver coins. American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money 129th Convention medal created by Don Everhart
Hover to zoom.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Retired United States Mint designer, sculptor, and engraver, Don Everhart, has finished his plaster sculpts of the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money 129th Convention medal. The medal depicts the bust of Pittsburgh area born environmentalist and biologist Rachel Carson.
The August 4th – 8th ANA Convention is in a state of uncertainty in light of the restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ANA and the Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists (PAN) are moving forward with the convention medal regardless of the annual numismatic gathering’s fate. The medal will be produced in the sizes and metal compositions of previous ANA convention medals; 1.5” bronze, 2.75” bronze, and a two-medal set of 1.5” bronze and silver. Pricing will be announced at a later date.
The medal design came as a result of a December 2019 PAN board meeting when board chairman Donald Carlucci queried those in attendance with medal topic preferences. Previous ANA / Pittsburgh medals have depicted John Mercanti’s 1989 design of young Major George Washington overlooking the French advancement to the fork of the Ohio Valley prior to the French and Indian War, and Jamie Franki’s 2011 ANA-National Money Show medal of Andrew Carnegie and Andrew Mellon obverse with a ladle pouring molten steel reverse. After some ideas and discussion, Carlucci presented a very compelling presentation as to why a Rachel Carson medal would be appropriate today.
Rachel Carson was born in 1907 and was raised by her parents in a four-room house on 65 acres in Springdale, Pennsylvania, along the Allegheny River. Her lifelong passion for the state of our natural world brought to the forefront man’s unintentional damage to the environment. One of her books, Silent Spring, published in 1962, created quite the awareness controversy. On June 4th, 1963, testifying before the United States Congress, Rachel Carson began:
Mr. Chairman, I appreciate the opportunity to discuss with you this morning the problems of environmental hazards and the control of pesticides. The contamination of the environment with harmful substances is one of the major problems of modern life. The world of air and water and soil supports not only the hundreds of thousands of species of animals and plants, it supports man himself.
Ms. Carson’s voice took on the powerful chemical industry. These unsafe compounds proved to be a major cause of the rapid decline of the American bald eagle population because of their feeding habits within the rivers and streams. The chemicals also affected the viability of our national bird’s nest eggs that resulted in shell weakness that caused the eggs to crack and resulted in the continuing decline of the bald eagle population.
Mr. Carlucci’s convincing discourse about the extraordinary life of Rachel Carson had the PAN board members sold on the idea. The next step was to contact ANA membership Chairman Carey Hardy to acquire ANA approval. Initially when speaking of a medal subject, many questioned, who is Rachel Carson, and why, with so many Pittsburgh historical titans of industry, would she be selected? A George Westinghouse medal certainly could be a more popular choice. A few things come into play to understand why. Her tireless work had a profound effect on preserving our national symbol that graces much of our coinage. The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. Women are more involved in numismatics today than at any time in history including our ANA executive director and board members, owners, and managing partners of large numismatic companies, coin show coordinators nationwide, the creation of the Women in Numismatics (WIN) organization, to the increasing number of young girls participating in young numismatist programs nationwide. The recognition and increasing awareness of global climate change is something that Rachel Carson would have had a profound interest in today if she were still alive. The ANA readily approved the creation of a Rachel Carson convention medal and the next step was to find an artist.
PAN has had a very good relationship with Don Everhart. His skill at design and portraiture sculpting is uncanny with his ability to capture the essence, passion, and personality of the subjects. We witnessed this first hand when Don created the Pope Francis visit to Washington D.C. medal for PAN. The end result was perfect. PAN President Thomas Uram called Don and asked if he would be interested in designing and sculpting the Rachel Carson medal for the August ANA World’s Fair of Money. He readily agreed to the project and went to work.
Don Everhart’s enthusiasm grew as the project progressed to these beautifully finished plaster sculpts. He describes the obverse and reverse as such:
When designing the medal, I first re-read her book, “Silent Spring”. I had read it when I was in elementary school and definitely needed a refresher. As stated before, the pesticides negative effect on the air, land, and water was particularly devastating. My obverse design attempts to illustrate all three elements of the natural world most affected by the use of chemicals to eradicate pests. An eagle flies in the sky, a deer and fawn browse on vegetation on a farmer’s field while fish swim in a fast moving river. Her favorite butterfly, the Monarch, is perched on her name. A solemn but hopeful look is present on the portrait of Carson. I am sure she would still be unsatisfied and still be battling for our environment had she lived today.
For the reverse, I have depicted a bald eagle as it swoops down onto the water to snag a trout to bring back to the nest to feed her hatchlings. The American bald eagle has been a success story thanks to Carson’s unwavering efforts to make our natural world more safe and livable. In fact, I have witnessed many eagles on my bike while riding in Pennsylvania and beyond. It is always a thrill to witness this majestic bird in flight. They are unmistakable with their size and white head and tail feathers as they glide through the air. They are usually found near a water source, where its main diet consists of fish.
The American Bald Eagle deserves its place as our national symbol. To see one in flight is to witness one of the most majestic creatures to inhabit this precious earth that we all inhabit.
We are looking forward to the sale of the finished product and believe that the interest in this incredible lady will make this one of the most popular ANA Convention medals to ever be offered.
Press release courtesy of the Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists.

Silver Eagle Struck at West Point Type 2 PCGS MS70 First Strike Damstra Signed Mint Designer Series
First issued in 1986 the American Silver Eagle has become far and away the most collected modern silver coin in the World! Now, after 35 years this classic and popular coin is being updated with an enhanced obverse design and a brand new reverse!
The classic Walking Liberty design by Adolph Weinman is still featured on the obverse of the Type 2 Silver Eagle. However, thanks to technological advancements in the design and minting process, Liberty now encompasses some of Weinman's original details that were not previously possible!
The new reverse was designed by the artist Emily Damstra and sculpted by U.S. Mint Engraver Michael Gaudioso. It features an eagle as it approaches a landing, carrying an oak branch, as if to add it to it's nest. Also included in the reverse design are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "1 OZ FINE SILVER" and "ONE DOLLAR".
Although the West Point Mint is the primary production location for bullion Silver Eagles, in recent years, demand has been extremely strong, and the Mint has been unable to meet the demand. In an effort to keep up, both the Philadelphia and the San Francisco Mints have been used to augment American Silver Eagle Bullion production.
You might be wondering how would one know if they had a Silver Eagle struck from the West Point Mint, the Philadelphia Mint or the San Francisco Mint if the bullion coins do not have a mint mark? The Silver Eagles struck at each of these 3 Mint's have specific serial numbers on their sealed US Mint monster box's that allow the grading services to recognize them upon submission. When Silver Eagles are submitted for grading and can be verified as coming from either West Point, Philadelphia or San Francisco, NGC is adding a (W) designation for West Point, a (P) designation for Philadelphia and an (S) designation for San Francisco on the label.
This 2021 (W) $1 Silver Eagle Type 2 was struck at the West Point Mint and has been certified an MS70 First Strike by PCGS. In addition the label has been hand signed by Emily Damstra the new type 2 Silver Eagle reverse designer for the exclusive PCGS Mint Designer Series.

US-Canada Pride of Two Nations Coin Set
The normally close relationship between America and its northern neighbor, Canada, has been under strain in recent years, with each country working from very different political playbooks. But in the coin world all is rosy, and to make that point the US Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint have got together for a first. They have created a two-coin set that combines an American Silver Eagle with a Canadian Silver Maple Leaf – both popular collector coins in their own right. To make the set special, each coin has a unique finish, exclusive to the set.
The finish on the Silver Eagle is an enhanced reverse proof with a frosted background and areas of frost and polish enhancing the design. The Silver Maple Leaf has a modified proof finish with frosted images on a polished background, and with the inscriptions also polished, rather than the more usual use of frosting for inscriptions. To enhance the collectible value, the US Mint is producing just 100,000 sets, and the Royal Canadian Mint just 10,000. The Canadian sales were completely sold out when released near the end of June, and the US sets went on sale July 3.
The American Silver Eagle has been made since 1986, and for this set the design is unmodified. The obverse is the Adolph A. Weinman ‘Walking Liberty’, showing a female personification of Liberty in full-length, striding forward into freedom. She is wrapped in folds of the American Flag. The image uses the flamboyant 19th century style of rendering fabrics. ‘Walking Liberty’ has been a clear favorite for coin design since it was first seen on the 1916 to 1947 half-dollar, which Weinman designed it for. Its popularity was of course why the Mint chose it when the American Silver Eagle was launched. In Liberty’s left hand there are laurel and oak branches, symbols of victory, endurance and strength – virtues needed to protect Liberty. The inscriptions are: 2019, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
The reverse was designed by John Mercanti, showing an heraldic eagle behind a shield. There is an an olive branch in its right claws and arrows in its left, which are features from the Great Seal of the United States. Above the eagle are thirteen five-pointed stars, symbols of the original thirteen Colonies. Inscriptions on the reverse are; UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR, and E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the mintmark, which for this special issue is ‘W’, which is the West Point minting facility.
The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coin is a modified design based on the well-known Maple Leave coin. The obverse has an image of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt. The profile is placed on a background of radiating lines, and there is a deep border of two rows of stars and two rows of maple leaves. The reverse is the classic leaf of the sugar maple – also seen on the Canadian flag – that was created by Walter Ott in 1979. The same background pattern of radiating lines, and the stars and maple leaves border is also used on this side. The inscriptions, ELIZABETH II, 5 DOLLARS, 2019 are on the obverse, with 9999, FINE SILVER, 1 OZ, ARGENT PURE on the reverse side.
