Song Review: The Doobie Brothers feat. Mick Fleetwood, Jake Shimabukuro and Henry Kapono
As a song, “Lahaina” is nothing to get excited about. But it’s also a must-listen.
And that’s because the new Doobie Brothers single - a joint with drummer Mick Fleetwood, ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro and singer Henry Kapono - benefits the People’s Fund of Maui as the Hawaiian island recovers from devastating wildfires.
Set to a balladic, tropical arrangement that epitomizes the downside of yacht rock, the track finds Pat Simmons, Michael McDonald and Kapono harmonizing:
Deep roots of the banyan tree growing in the sand/are strong like the people of the island/ … it’s calling me Lahaina/carry me home/where I belong
So, yeah, it’s overwrought. But the island is overwhelmed and the sentiment and fundraising motivation is unassailable.
“I hope this song brings some peace and healing to those who need it,” Fleetwood, whose restaurant was destroyed in this year’s blazes, said in a statement.

How to continue after achieving your biggest success? For instance, The Doobie Brothers reconfigured themselves so often they were a different band by the time they released One Step Closer, the follow up to their blockbuster Minute By Minute. We need to say – Michael McDonald transformed the group into an entity that could function within the 80's, but the band seemed tired by then. Still, the tune on the link presented a possibility of a continuation, i.e. a version of a collective, where Cornelius Bumpus serves as a frontman. I think that development would've fit the way Michael McDonald showed, while one can also observe a potential in an even more soulful direction. Sadly, the collective disbanded afterwards, delegating the composition as a glimpse into what-could-have-been.

Time for your Rock Report
In a recent interview with "The Morning X With Barnes & Leslie," the late Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfgang Van Halen responded to former Van Halen singer David Lee Roth's "vile" comments about him. "I guess I'm honored he even thinks about me as much as he seems to," he said. "I guess you have to take what he says with a grain of salt considering he also said that he wrote 'Eruption' [Eddie's iconic instrumental track] and came up with the Frankenstein [his father's red-white-and-black-striped guitar pattern]. He said he wrote all the solos that [my] dad wrote." "I guess that's all I can say," Wolfgang added. "I seem to have been born into this Van Halen drama that has come way before me. And I guess now that my dad isn't here to be a target, I guess he went to the next best thing." The conflict between Wolfgang and Roth came to light after the latter posted an audio clip titled "This F**kin Kid..." on YouTube in January. In the clip, Roth blasted Wolfgang, saying that his career was merely a product of nepotism instead of "talent." He later recounted two incidents involving Wolfgang that occurred during the period he toured with Van Halen, replacing Michael Anthony on bass.
The Doobie Brothers are reuniting with Michael McDonald for their first album together in more than four decades. Founding member of the rock band Pat Simmons broke the news in a Facebook post. "We are very close to finishing up an album's worth of new songs," Simmons revealed. "We're lucky once again to have John Shanks producing and Michael McDonald joining in with us on this one! Tom [Johnston], Michael, John and myself have composed a great bunch of songs that we're really proud of and John McFee is really a stand out on the tracks." He added, "It's the first time in 40 years that Michael has recorded a whole album with the band and in my humble opinion it's turning out to be some of the best music we've ever made together!" Simmons said the band hopes to debut some of the songs from the upcoming album during their nationwide tour, beginning in June. "There's some really high energy stuff that will be fun for us to play and hopefully work well with our better known tunes," he said. "We'll keep you posted and let you know how that's workin' out." Simmons said besides him, Tom Johnston, McDonald as well as guitarist John McFee have actively participated in the recording of the new album……..
Produced by John Shanks, the untitled album will be The Doobie Brothers' first project with McDonald since One Step Closer, released in 1980.

Michael McDonald to Appear on Next Doobie Brothers LP
- As-yet-untitled album is McDonald’s first since 1980 with the band
The Doobie Brothers are “very close to finishing up an album’s worth of new songs” with prodigal member Michael McDonald on board for the first time in more than four decades.
“We’re shooting for a spring/summer release,” said band co-founder Pat Simmons, the only Doobie to appear on every Brothers album.
The LP represents the studio debut of the core band of Simmons, fellow original member Tom Johnston, McDonald and John McFee.
It’ll mark McDonald’s first appearance on a Doobies recording since 1980’s One Step Closer and will be the first group album with both Johnston and McDonald since Takin’ it to the Streets arrived in 1976.
“In my humble opinion, it’s turning out to be some of the best music we’ve ever made together,” Simmons said of the as-yet-untitled album.
The band begins rehearsals in May for a tour that kicks off June 15 in Seattle and Simmons asked fans to suggest songs on the Doobies’ Facebook page to help the group “put together a set that could be more engaging.”
“I’m hoping we’ll be able to debut a few of our new songs,” he said. “There’s some really high-energy stuff that will be fun for us to play and hopefully work well with our better-known tunes.”
Steve Winwood or the Robert Cray Band will open for the Doobies, depending on the city.

The group will then play Avenir Centre in Moncton, N.B., on Oct. 14.
The tour will see founding members Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald and Pat Simmons, as well as long-time guitarist John McFee, back on the road together for the first time in more than 25 years.
“Last year we got to play Toronto and London, Ontario and we’re excited to be able to make almost a dozen more stops in Canada in 2023,” said Johnston in a release Monday.

Edmonton police officers will have to record their reasons for stopping members of the public after amendments were made to the policy on street checks. Sgt. Jeffrey Westman, a lawyer for the Edmonton Police Service, presented the changes to the Edmonton Police Commission Thursday.
He said the changes also reflect that officers do collect personal information from the public, and they have the legal right to do so. “This change is intended to make it clearer for the public that the checks that our officers are performing are already authorized by law,” said Westman.
Street checks are “interactions or observations that result in an officer collecting personal and/or identifying information and entering it into a database for future use.” Carding is “when officers randomly request personal information from a member of the public without reasonable grounds,” according to the Alberta government.
The province banned carding and moved to regulate street checks in November 2020. Westman said the service hasn’t allowed “street checks” since 2015 and this change was made to make the terminology less confusing.
A street check is defined in the Police Act as an interaction between a police officer and a member of the public. In this interaction, personal information is collected without a clearly stated reason. A brand-new term introduced in the EPS policy is “officer contact,” where the officer has an existing duty, authority or responsibility — in other words, a legitimate reason — to stop someone and collect personal information.
According to Dale McFee, police chief, "(the change) clearly defines what we’re trying to do and how we're intending to do it."
The catch-all category allows officers to make contact if the officer is “engaging in a necessary police function … or to provide for safe communities.” Westman said officers can require people to show ID when they’re involved in a traffic stop or are breaking a bylaw, provincial law or the criminal code.
The changes also introduce “observe reports” — the act of seeing a person known to police and making observations about them, like what clothing they’re wearing, but not talking to them. Officers will be required to record the reason they had for stopping and questioning someone, and the service’s audit branch will take a look at the office contact and observe reports to see if they show bias, particularly towards BIPOC (Black and Indigenous people of colour) Edmontonians.
“I don’t want to underestimate the power of audit, because if we haven’t got it quite right then we need to change it. … I think it will get us in a better place,” McFee said. EPS is re-releasing a marketing campaign called “Know Your Rights” which is designed to inform the public of the change and let them know when they’re legally required to stay with police and answer questions and when they are free to leave.
“How do you communicate with the public? We must tell the public the expectations,” McFee said.
During the commission’s annual general meeting before Thursday’s meeting, a new chair and vice-chair were chosen. Former vice-chair Erick Ambtman was moved up to become chair of the commission. Ambtman is the executive director of End Poverty in Edmonton.
“The Edmonton Police Commission plays an instrumental role in police governance and accountability, and I am humbled to lead this diverse group of talented individuals making a difference in our city,” Ambtman said. Ambtman replaces former chair, John McDougall, who will stay on as a member of the commission.
“My time as chair has been one of the major highlights of my career, and I’m excited to spend my final year on the commission under Mr. Ambtman’s adroit leadership and passion for helping Edmontonians,” McDougall said. Aneela Hussainaly is now vice-chair. Hussainaly has a background in consulting and now works in early learning and childhood development. She was a member of the commission before being moved up to vice-chair.
“I look forward to working alongside my colleagues, collaborating on key matters of policy and community safety that can benefit all Edmontonians,” Hussainaly said.
