I miss season one Carrie Bradshaw SOOOO BAD. She was genuinely such a great fucking character she wasn’t perfect obviously and she was still delusional and boy obsessed but at a reasonable level. Like she was a hot mess. BUT AN UNDERSTANDABLE HOT MESS
Season 1 episode 7 Carrie says
“ That night I realized I’ve committed the cardinal sin id forsaken my girlfriends for my new boyfriend”
She says this after a phone call with Miranda when she realizes she hasn’t meet up with any of the girls in a while since she’s been so focused on her and bigs relationship (this is around the time they first start dating) so she decides to meet up with them that same night and have a nice dinner with her girlfriend and she ACTUALLY LISTENS TO THEM. she lets them complain without being judgy she isn’t condescending and gives some genuine fucking advice she’s funny she’s THERE she is actually present and engaged in the conversation and overall just being a goddamn good fucking friend. And most of all she’s fucking SELF AWARE. The reason I brought up that little quote is because later seasons Carrie Bradshaw would NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER be self aware enough to realize that she’s is prioritizing her current boyfriend/fling above her literal life long friends.

10 characters, 10 fandoms, 10 tags
thank you to @thegreenmagician and @ujiin for tagging me in this... a very, very long time ago at this point.
boringly, i'm a monofandom girly. so i'm turning this into...
10 fictional people whose vibe i fear i share...
lucille bluth, arrested development
tom riddle | lord voldemort, harry potter
jenna maroney, 30 rock
marianne dashwood, sense and sensibility
carrie bradshaw, sex and the city
harry burns, when harry met sally
jacqueline debellefort, death on the nile
winston schmidt, new girl
miss piggy, the muppets
fitzwilliam darcy, pride and prejudice
the themes which link them all? i'm theatrical, interpersonally off-putting, well dressed, cursed with terrible taste in men [the harry james potter - john james "mr big" preston parallels are manifold, i fear], the owner of a cracking pair of cheekbones, the protagonist of the universe, at home with a cocktail in my hand, considerably cleverer than i look, camp, fond of meddling in my friends' personal lives, a hopeless romantic, and mildly sinister...
[i'm pretty sure everyone did this when it was originally going around - so consider this a blanket tag. tell me what vibe you have!]

Back home, practically the last act to scramble aboard the Merseybeat bandwagon were the Mojos. They were not the biggest, but they were one of the best, and their story is in some ways emblematic of the whole era. Stu James, their singer, was a pupil at the Liverpool Institute, though a few years younger than Paul McCartney and George Harrison. He was therefore of the first Liverpool generation whose musical inspiration began with the Beatles themselves: to him, they weren’t Cavern rivals, or even pals. They were divinities. ‘Suddenly there came a day when you heard about what was going on at the Cavern,’ he remembers. ‘That’s where it all began. The word at school, at the Institute, was the Beatles. This thing was actually happening with some guys who’d been in our Fifth Form.
Geographically, it was an easy walk at lunchtimes down to the Cavern, and Sunday nights I’d go to Mrs Best’s place in West Derby, where they played as well. From there it escalated to charabanc outings to Manchester or Crewe or Preston to see them. And you were very partisan: if you liked the Beatles you couldn’t like Rory Storm or anyone else. But I was absolutely obsessive about the Beatles, and I could recite their set list to you.
‘The Beatles’ Hamburg record with Tony Sheridan, “My Bonnie”, was the first one that came into Liverpool. If you were fanatical about the Beatles, that was a moment of great excitement: that was the first piece of plastic, and we all charged round to NEMS to pick it up. This was the first opportunity to take them home with you. Where we heard everything first was in the Cavern from Bob'Wooler. It was a big deal if you could get in the DJ box and actually talk to him, and I remember one day how I’d proudly acquired this Chuck Berry greatest hits album by sending away to America, so I took it in to him saying “Hey, look at this Bob!” And John Lennon came over: “What have you got there?” I think he actually bought it from me for four quid. I was really proud. ‘Everything that happened to a band was new, back then. Just hearing them on the radio was a high. Today they probably would have been on John Peel or Steve Lamacq, but the whole process was new in 1962. And the night that the TV cameras came into the Cavern to him the Beatles was an incredibly big deal. They sang “Some Other Guy”. ‘A large proportion of the people at the Cavern didn’t go to local places like Litherland Town Hall. Whereas the Tower in New Brighton would have a real mix of Teddy Boys and whatever, those of us at the Cavern felt we were a bit arty. It was quite a cool place. It wasn’t just everybody that went to the Cavern: there was a feeling of clique-ishness. Take away the smell of disinfectant and you felt good about being in there. I didn’t like the older-looking groups like the Searchers. I associated them with the Iron Door club and somehow that was uncool. I have to say, though, that their records have stood the test of time, and are very much in the line of pop you can hear in the La’s. But you either went to the Cavern or you went to the Iron Door: I don’t think I even went there once. ‘One of the keys to it was that Cavern bands always sounded very loud. The way that place worked, with the three tunnels, if you sat in the middle it seemed incredible. Compared to the London acts like Joe Brown, who were almost cabaret entertainers, our bands were scruffy. But the biggest thing for me was just how loud these bass coffin amps could be, and that was so obviously different to what you saw on the TV. And I did think the Big Three and the Undertakers were very credible, not that we would' have used that word. They sounded very tough and were probably the best musicians.
The first band I had myself was a local group in Penny Lane, with guitars from mail order catalogues, and it was all Tommy Roe and Buddy Holly. Then I was in a band called the Nomads: they weren’t school mates, and I had to go miles on the bus to Anheld. I’d be playing Jerry Lee Lewis stuff on a piano with a mike stuck in the top. <…> ‘We started to get gigs, and I remember being thrilled to play about 24th on the list of a Cavern all-nighter. It all took off when we did an American song, “The Mashed Potato”, which we’d ripped off from Jackie Lomax in the Undertakers. It all went mad: they started screaming and going bonkers. We’d obviously moved up a couple of notches overnight. The breakthrough was a songwriting competition at the Philharmonic Hall, organised by this publisher. I won that: I think I got a tape recorder, and we got a publishing deal. But we had to change our name since there was another Nomads somewhere; since we always did the Muddy Waters’ song “Got My Mojo Working” we then became the Mojos. <…>
‘And then we went to Hamburg for a five-week at the Star Club: it was January and freezing cold, but it was the first time I stayed in a nice hotel. A very happy month. You’d always do three or four hours a night with big drinking gaps in between. There was a caff next door where you’d go for soup, bread and beer. The audiences were all male, and there were nights when barmes broke out, but that was nothing new, because all the gigs in Liverpool were like that too. It was like you’d suddenly see half the audience had disappeared, because there was a massive fight going on. I remember the police having to get us out of one gig in Aigburth. They were very violent. In Penny Lane Hall, you’d see the crowd swirling like a kaleidoscope with the fight rushing round and chairs in the air. ‘Through the publishing deal we also got signed to Decca, and once we could add the magic words “Decca Recording Artists” to our posters we were away. The Mojos were very much the second generation, at least two or three years younger than the Beatles and the Searchers, but people in London were still saying “We must have a Liverpool band on the roster.” It was so hot. Everywhere we went, people had fake Liverpool accents: “Aright la?” I wasn’t even like that myself. You could get a shag just by speaking in a Liverpool accent. ‘In Hamburg we made “Everything’s Alright”: I think there was a rush because the Liverpool thing had been around for two or three years.
<…>
‘So then we did a theatre tour with the Dave Clarke Five, the Hollies, the Kmks and Charlie and Inez Foxx. We started at the bottom of the bill, in Coventry, but when we had a big hit with “Everything’s Alright” we overtook the Kinks. We still got on well with Ray, but less well with the Hollies: we’d never played theatres before, you see, only clubs, and I think we quickly grabbed lots of the Hollies’ act, in terms of being more outgoing and running around the stage. I think Graham Nash was somewhat peeved about the whole thing. ‘The second was an eight-week tour with the Stones. But I spent absolutely zilch time with them, because they’d arrive in Black Marias with police escorts. ‘“Everything’s Alright” was raved about, but it was diminishing returns after that. We didn’t know what it was about the song that everyone loved. It had been so spontaneous, but now we sat around analysing our own song.
<…> When the Mojos’ next single failed to chart, Stu James recalls, ‘we saw the writing on the wall’. But he persevered with a new line-up that included the well-respected drummer Aynsley Dunbar and their tour manager’s son Lewis Collins t(who’d once been a ladies’ hairdresser with Mike McCartney, and would become a TV star as one of The Professionals). Strangely, they tried storming the charts with ‘Goodbye Dolly Gray’, an old soldiers’ favourite from the trenches. ‘The producer’s idea,’ sighs Stu. ‘A horrible record. He told us anti-war songs were big that year.’
The band’s last days were spent in Africa, where they were booked to money, the sun was shining and we only had to play two or three hours a night. And that was probably the last place on earth where people still thought it was really cool to come from Liverpool. The women thought they’d died and gone to heaven, and so did we. Everything was provided, we had lovely bedrooms. But I was lying by the pool one afternoon and thought, “I’m 23 now, this really isn’t going in the right direction.” We gave up after that.’

And Just Like That...is Cringeworthy, Not Binge-worthy
I have a new guilty pleasure: no, it’s not Riverdale, nor is it the umpteenth season of The Bachelor. It’s And Just Like That…, the reboot of Sex and the City starring Sarah Jessica Parker and her (mostly intact) group of gal pals as they help her move on from the death of her husband, John James “Mr. Big” Preston (Chris Noth). Where Sex and the City was a fun romp exploring the lives of Carrie Bradshaw (Parker), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) through singlehood and coupledom, And Just Like That is strictly a cringe watch, not a binge watch, as the reboot attempts to correct some errors, including the lack of diversity, of the original show.
The cast of Sex and the City
Tumblr media
The cast of And Just Like That…
Tumblr media
Over the course of the first season, we are introduced to Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte’s new friends, all of whom are a part of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) community (Kim Cattrall did not reprise her role as Samantha due to an ongoing feud with SJP). There’s Charlotte’s new friend Lisa Todd-Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker), Miranda Hobbs’ hip professor Nya Wallace (Karen Pittman), Carrie’s podcasting partner Che (Sara Ramirez), and her realtor Seema Patel (Sarita Chodbury). All of these actors are wonderful additions to the cast–it’s just too bad the show squanders the opportunity to flesh out the characters beyond what they look like or identify as.
As Deborah Willis discusses in the documentary Through a Lens Darkly, it’s important to have representation. She explains that “Black people were subjects for the photographers, but none of the photographers were African American.” The original Sex and the City had an overwhelmingly white writers room, and it seems And Just Like That...is making up for it with the introduction of BIPOC women behind the camera in both writing and directing positions. But despite the attempts at increasing diversity off-camera, that doesn’t mean the characters’ escapades at welcoming diversity on camera are any less cringeworthy.
In the pilot alone, Lisa is referred to by Charlotte’s husband Harry as “Black Charlotte;” later, Charlotte and Harry attempt to befriend more Black people after fearing Lisa and her husband will be the only non-white people at their dinner party.
Miranda’s attempts to befriend her professor may be more awkward. When Miranda first meets Nya, she spends too much time complimenting her braids, over-explaining that her compliment had “nothing to do with it being a Black hairstyle” and then insinuating she signed up for her class just because Nya is Black.
youtube
This whole video is just one giant face palm.
But the worst offender might just be Che Diaz, a Latinx nonbinary comedian who has become the subject of multiple think pieces. What should be an innovative character highlighting the joys of representation becomes the most annoying human imaginable, an unfunny comedian who introduces themselves to Miranda by shotgunning a joint into her mouth at a bar. Miranda’s coming-out story should be a point of pride, mirroring the real-life story of Cynthia Nixon’s own coming-out; instead, Miranda’s plot feels like an insult to her ex, Steve Brady (really the last good character on this show) and an embarrassing attempt at understanding real-life coming out stories in the queer community.
And that’s the problem with And Just Like That: it doesn’t understand the people they are trying to write about. Sex and the City was largely white and heterosexual: while they did have excellent recurring gay characters in Mario Cantone’s Anthony Marentino and the late Willie Garson’s Stanford Blatch, the core four’s gay panic is unmistakable. In one episode, Carrie dumps a man because he is bisexual; in another, Samantha dates a woman, only to break up with her because they talk too much, which perpetuates stereotypes regarding female relationships.
Which is why And Just Like That…is so disappointing. It had the opportunity to create a new, updated spin on single life in NYC with perspectives that weren’t just white women; instead, it chose to make the white women awkward, Karen-like stereotypes that don’t know how to handle diversity and instead sound like soundbites that could be used on Fox News. What was once a hip show touting the female experience all set to a jazzy theme tune has now turned into a cringeworthy watch that makes you wince every time they even try to tackle a relevant topic. As Ronald Takaki explains in A Different Mirror, authenticity of experience is important, and AJLT does not feel like any of the characters’ lives are being explored in an authentic way. The struggle to “let America be America,” or to depict our multicultural history accurately, has been very real, and it’s only exacerbated more by the gratingly frustrating attempts for AJLT to be diverse without making diversity awkward. I can only hope that AJLT will learn to be more comfortable in depicting diversity as something incredible, not incredibly awkward, but 2 seasons in, I find myself even more let down with every passing episode.
Suffice to say, And Just Like That…I’ve given up on this show ever trying to tackle a relevant topic in a fashionable manner. At least we can all look forward to Samantha’s cameo in the season 2 finale. Maybe she’ll have something good to say.

El creador de la gran serie "Sex and The City" nunca quiso que Carrie terminara con Mr.Big
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Sarah Jessica Parker, quien interpretó a Carrie y continúa interpretándola en la serie de Max And Just Like That…, también opinó sobre la conclusión del show, diciendo que aunque el programa siempre defendió las amistades, encontrar a un hombre con quien casarse no quitaba ese mensaje.
