Omg you have to write about that scene now! Imagine lib being like "I mean I can stay here for a couple of months and watch over the place." Joel looking at her like she's on craxk lol l
"I'm not getting in the car!"
“Traded?” Libby said slowly peering at him through her glasses. She looked both surprised and confused and a little bit sad as he explained what was going to happen next.
“So you have to leave tomorrow?”
“Yes.” He said with a heavy sigh as he stood “So we have to get packing. We’re gonna pick up frosty on the way. Just put some of the basics in your suitcase. Clothes for a few days, whatever other stuff you think you’ll need. Anything else we can just buy when we get there and-what?” He said stopping when he saw her expression.
“I just-I don’t want to go.”
He frowned so deeply that his lips nearly fell off his face and he looked at her like she was crazy “I’m sorry. What?”
“Not like I don’t ever wanna go. I just figured you can go and then during the break I can make my way up there. I’ll just stay here and pack and stuff.”
“If you think for a single second that I’m leaving you here, alone and pregnant by the way in case you forgot, you’ve got baby brain. Or your on crack. Or both.”
She frowned “How do you know about baby brain?”
“I read. Don’t change the subject. You’re going.. end of discussion.”
She raised her eyebrows and leaned back crossing her arms defiantly “No I am not. I’ll get there when I feel like it. End of discussion.” She stood to breeze past him and he swiftly turned her by the shoulders in the opposite direction and started to steer her to their bedroom but she stopped walking and planted her feet.
“Libby. There’s two choices here. You can pack your stuff and get in the car, or you can pack your stuff and I can put you in the car. Why are you being so difficult? Your gonna let me go all the way up to Canada with Frosty and leave you here? That’s ridiculous.”
“I just-I-“ but a tear ran down her cheek and it made sense.
“I don’t wanna leave this place either Lib.” He said glancing around their house as he pulled her into a hug “But we don’t have a choice. And I need you to come with me. Please.”
She sniffled and nodded slowly against his shoulder “What if we hate it there?” She whispered.
“Then at least we can hate it there together. Just us. And you know, frosty of course.”
Libby chuckled and wiped under her eyes “Of course. Can’t forget about our third wheel.”
Joel laughed and let go, walking past her towards the room “He says your the third wheel!” He called over his shoulder.
Libby rolled her eyes and followed behind him watching as he pulled their suitcases from the closet. He smiled as he set hers on the bed and flipped it open before reaching over and grabbing the sonogram picture off the vanity and placing it gently inside “Now that we have the most important thing. Let’s get the rest.”

Drinking to Forget ~ Joel Farabee
Summary: You’re equally concerned and annoyed with your best friend’s sudden habit of getting wasted every few days but when Joel finally tells you the reason for the uptick in drinking you’re left even more shaken up.
Word Count: ~4,900
Warnings: Lots of drinking, mentions of throwing up, smut (kinda? if you’re looking for smut this isn’t the one for you but if you’re avoiding it then probably avoid this)
You had desperately tried to ignore your phone vibrating on your nightstand, rolling away from it as the light from your screen illuminates your room. But by the third ring you knew you needed to answer it or turn your phone off. Fumbling around for the charging cord you give it an annoyed yank before bringing the phone to your ear. “What do you want, Joel?” You grumble.
Joel. He was the person you had been friends with for the longest, a constant in your life. Not because you two independently decided to become friends. It was something of an arranged friendship. Your mom and his mom had met at a prenatal class and quickly became friends, having someone going through the same thing at the same time really brought them together. Their friendship resulted in many, many playdates for you and Joel as children. But once you were old enough to decide you didn’t want to be friends anymore you still stuck around with Joel. Mostly it was because you were shy as a kid, terrified of every new school year. And Joel was far from the shy kid. So you stuck together, growing apart only slightly in elementary school as you started to realize other kids thought it was weird that your best friend was a boy. But once groups started to mingle and gender became less of a factor you found yourself right back in the close friendship you once had with Joel.
While 23 years of friendship meant your friendship was incredibly secure it also meant you weren’t worried that getting on each other’s nerves would push the other person away. So you bickered a lot and you got mad at each other, teasing each other while knowing you had no chance of truly hurting the other person’s feelings or pushing them away.
“It’s Jake.”
Groaning you roll onto your back, the room still in complete darkness. “What is going on? I’m trying to sleep.”
“I’m sorry, do you think you could come get Joel though?”
“Why?”
You can hear a bit of a ruckus in the background, though you didn’t think much of it, knowing they had gone to a house party. “He’s kinda drunk…well, he’s actually pretty hammered.”
“Okay?” You say, drawing the word out longer than necessary. “Can’t one of you take him home? Or get an Uber or something/“
“We’ve tried, he’s been asking for you for like an hour.”
“Don’t tell her that,” you hear Joel yell in the background, it was muffled and slurred but distinctly him.
Sighing you fumble around for the lamp on your bedside table, pulling yourself from the comfort of your bed. “Text me the address, I’ll be there soon.”
“Thank you,” Jake replies with a sense of relief in his voice.
Hurrying around your room you yank on a pair of jeans and a hoodie, grabbing your keys and wallet and taking off from your apartment. Once you were in the car you type the address into apple maps and let your phone do the rest of the work, not thinking you could manage to drive and navigate at this hour. It was only a ten minute drive from your apartment, which was at least some sort of silver lining to being woken up at one in the morning to be an unwilling designated driver. Pulling up to the curb in front of the house you hop out, seeing Joel sitting on the front steps of the house with Jake and Tyler standing around him like nervous body guards.
“Thank God,” you hear Tyler breathe out as you get closer.
Joel has his elbows on his knees, leaning forward a little too much for you to feel like he was even remotely okay. “Holy shit,” you mutter, squatting down in front of him. “Hey, let’s go home, okay?”
“You’re here?” Joel slurs, lifting his head to look into your eyes.
“What was he drinking?” You question, looking over at Jake with wide eyes. You had seen Joel drunk before, of course, but this was a different level altogether.
“Pretty much everything he could,” Jake tells you and you let out a quiet sigh.
Standing up you reach down, grabbing Joel’s hands and yanking him to his feet, barely able to get him up. “You guys can go back in, I’ve got it from here.”
“Thanks, Y/N,” Jake tells you, the two of them hesitating before heading back into the house.
“Come on, you idiot, let’s get you out of here,” you tell Joel, wrapping your arm around his torso as you guide him to your car. It was almost entirely symbolic, if he was going to fall there really wasn’t much you could really do about it. But you get him into the car and you’re on your way to your apartment a moment later. You really weren’t sure how you felt about leaving him alone right now, making the executive decision to keep him at your apartment where you could keep an eye on him.
You’re only driving for a couple minutes before Joel tips his head back, smacking it into the seat with a worrying amount of force. “I don’t feel good,” he groans.
“Jesus Christ,” you mumble, pulling over as quickly as you can, watching Joel remain frozen in spot. “Get out of the car, Joel,” you tell him, watching him breathing a little heavier. “Don’t you dare throw up in my fucking car, get out,” you exclaim, watching him finally unbuckle his seatbelt and all but fall out of the car.
Sighing to yourself you grab the bottle of water that was sitting in your cupholder, it was a couple days old but that really seemed like the last of anyone’s worries given the situation. You were honestly pretty thankful he had gotten it over with quick enough that when you make it around the front of the car he’s just sitting on the curb, staring at the ground with a blank stare. “Here,” you say softly, sitting down next to him. “Are you okay?”
“I’m drunk,” he tells you, taking the water and slamming half of it in one go.
“I know,” you laugh, shaking your head. “That’s not what I meant, but I guess we can talk about this tomorrow.”
“Are you mad at me?”
“No,” you say quietly, reaching over and setting your hand on his knee. “It’s like five more minutes to my apartment, do you think you’re good or do you want to wait a couple more minutes?”
“We can go, I’m fine,” Joel mumbles, pulling himself to his feet with all the grace of a newborn giraffe.
Thankfully he was correct and you manage to get him up to your apartment without any other issues. “I’ll grab you some water and meet you in my bedroom, okay?”
Joel nods, kicking his shoes off and stumbling down the hall to your bedroom. Once he’s out of sight you rest your hands on the kitchen counter, leaning into it and taking a deep breath. This wasn’t the first time he had gotten way too drunk since coming home for the summer. The first few times you chalked it up to him just wanting to relax after the season. But this was getting out of hand and out of character for him to get to this level of drunk. Straightening out you grab a glass and fill it with water, stopping in the bathroom to grab some Advil before heading to the bedroom. “You’re going to sleep like that?” You laugh, looking at Joel laying on the bed flat on his back and fully clothed.
“The room won’t stop spinning.”
Setting the water down you grab Joel’s hands and pull him to his feet again. “Take your jeans off at least.”
“You just want to get me naked,” Joel mutter, words slurring together as he unbuttons his jeans.
“I really don’t,” you say as you pull your hoodie off, tossing it onto the floor as you walk to your side of the bed. “Like seriously, Joel, please don’t get naked.”
“Whatever, I wouldn’t mind if you did,” Joel mutters under his breath.
“What did you say?” You ask, sitting down on your bed, staring over at him in disbelief.
“Nothing,” he groans, fumbling his way out of his jeans a shirt before landing heavily onto the bed.
“Right,” you mumble, rolling your eyes as you lay down, turning onto your side so you back was towards him. “Goodnight, Joel.”
“Thank you for picking me up, I love you.”
Sighing you look back over at him, glad to see he at least looked semi-settled in the bed. “Yeah, love you too, now go to sleep.”
You wake up the next morning with Joel in the middle of the bed, forcing you onto the far edge of the bed. Slowly and carefully you get up, not wanting to wake him, he definitely needed the extra hours of sleep. You’re up and about, a few cups of coffee into the day before Joel appears from the hallway, heavy eyes looking across the room at you.
“How’re you feeling?” You tease, sitting up on the couch.
“Been better,” he replies, trudging through the living room to flop onto the couch beside you. “I’m sorry about last night, I was a mess.”
Sighing you shake your head, turning to face him. “It’s fine,” you assure him. “But what’s going on with you, Joel? I worry about you during the hockey season, that you’re putting too much pressure on yourself, that something is going to happen to you. But then it’s when you get home that you fall apart and honestly, yeah, you’re a mess.”
Joel shakes his head, refusing to look you in the eye. “I’m fine, you don’t have to worry about me.”
“But you know I’m going to so why won’t you just tell me why you’re getting black out drunk every few days?”
“Just drop it,” Joel snaps. “You’re not my mother, stop acting like it.”
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” You let out a loud scoff, getting up from the couch and walking towards the kitchen.
“What?” Joel questions, following after you.
“If you don’t want me to worry about it then I won’t,” you snap. “But stop fucking calling me to come bail you out of every situation you get yourself into.”
“Fine, I don’t need you to rescue me.”
Your arms are crossed over your body, staring up at him with narrowed eyes. “I really shouldn’t have answered the phone last night.”
“Wow, okay,” Joel mutters, shaking his head. “You know what, I’ll just go and leave you alone since I’m such a burden to you.”
“Don’t do that,” you warn. “Don’t put words in my mouth and make me sound like the bad person here, Joel.”
“Whatever, have a great Saturday,” he tells you sarcastically, pulling on his shoes before disappearing through the front door.
You stare at the closed door, wanting to scream in annoyance. How could he not see how irrational he was being? There was also a part of you that was simply disappointed. Both in the situation, in him, and in the fact that the two of you had plans to hang out and now he had stormed off like a little kid having a tantrum.
You find other ways to fill your time in Joel’s absence. You clean your apartment, run some errands, and make plans to go for a couple drinks with your friends that night. But not long after you get to the bar you get a text from Jake, from his phone this time. ‘What happened with you and Joel?’
‘Why?’ You reply, not wanting to offer any information before knowing why he was asking for it.
‘Because he’s at my place drunk again and going off about you hating him’
‘We had an argument, it wasn’t that big of a deal’
You’re thankful that the texts seem to stop at that point, but only long enough for you to have a singular drink before your phone is ringing this time.
“You need to come get him,” Jake says the second you answer your phone.
You weave your way out of the loud bar to the quieter street before replying. “No, I don’t. He made it clear that he doesn’t need me to rescue him anymore.”
“I don’t know what your argument was about but I really don’t know what to do with him right now so can you please come? Like I’m about to start begging here.”
Groaning you try so hard to stand your ground, to tell him he could figure it out. But you couldn’t. You couldn’t not help Joel, no matter how angry he had made you. “I’m going to fucking kill him,” you sigh. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
After explaining the situation to your friends and receiving a five minute lecture about why you shouldn’t go, you’re on your way. At least you were still under the legal limit to drive, knowing dealing with Ubers would only make this situation much more complicated. Once you’re at Jake’s place you head up to his apartment, the door being whipped open only seconds after you knock.
“Joel, what the fuck?” You snap the second he’s in your line of sight.
“See, she hates me,” Joel comments, looking over at Jake.
“Stop being such an idiot, you know I don’t hate you.” Leaning agains the hallway wall you wait for him to say something, anything. Finally you give in and break the silence yourself. “Do you want a ride home?”
“I don’t need you to take care of me.”
Sighing loudly you shake your head, turning back towards the front door. “Okay, well, I’m here now anyway so just grow up and accept the ride home,” you tell him, your hand already on the doorknob. “Or don’t, but stop fucking telling everyone I hate you because that’s so far from the truth.”
“Fine, I’ll go with you.”
Rolling your eyes you watch him grab his things and pull his shoes on, stepping into the hallway. Thankfully he wasn’t nearly as belligerent as the night before and the walk back to your car is tense and quiet but at least he was able to walk in a relatively straight line.
The drive is quiet for the first few minutes but you can feel Joel staring at you and you’re sure it’s not going to stay quiet for long. “You’re fucking him, aren’t you?”
You’re so taken aback by the question that you don’t even know what to say for a few minutes. “What? Who?”
“Mark or whatever.”
“Mike? My coworker?” You question, only guessing what he was on about because there sure as hell wasn’t any truth behind it.
“Yeah, him,” Joel grumbles.
“No, I’m not,” you tell Joel, shaking your head. “Why would you even think that?”
“Because you’re always going for lunch with him and I know you hang out with him after work.”
“And? He’s my fucking friend, Joel. I don’t sleep with every guy I hang out.”
“So you’re not sleeping with him?” Joel’s voice is softer now, filled with a sense of confusion.
“No,” you exclaim, glancing over at him. “Now what the fuck is this about?” You’re pulling up to his place already but you don’t want him to get out. You needed to finish this conversation before he could leave and pretend it never happened.
Joel shakes his head, taking his seatbelt off but you grab his hand before he can get the door open. “You cannot just leave without an explanation.”
Joel looks back over at you, eyes locked with yours. “I love you.”
“Okay, I love you too, now why are you acting so weird?”
“No, I love you, Y/N,” Joel repeats, starring at you like he was expecting a reaction you weren’t giving him. Suddenly he lurches forward, kissing you quickly before pulling back just as fast.
“What the fuck?” You whisper, eyes wide and heart racing. “Joel, what was that?”
“I love you, or I’m in love with you, or whatever,” he stammers. “But you don’t feel the same way and I don’t know what to do except get drunk and try to forget about it and forget about you being with other guys.”
“I-,” you begin, hesitating and shaking your head. “I don’t know what to say.”
“Don’t say anything,” Joel says, voice wavering as he reaches for the door handle. “It’s fine.”
He pushes the door open but you grab his hand before he can step out. “Come back to my apartment?”
“For what?” Joel snaps.
You inhale sharply at his outburst, dropping his hand and bringing both yours up in defence. “Sorry, clearly I didn’t realize we weren’t friends anymore.”
“That’s not true, of course we are.” Joel is giving you his typical apologetic look, when he won’t just say he’s sorry but you know he is.
“Then close the door and put your seatbelt back on.”
Joel does what you say and you drive over to your own apartment, heading inside with him just a couple steps behind you the whole time. You kick off your shoes and drop your purse on the counter, heading straight for the cupboard that contained your wine glasses. Taking one you fill it with a hefty pour of Pinot Gris.
“You’re drinking?” Joel questions, sitting down at a barstool opposite you at the counter.
“Yeah, I think I need it after what you just said to me.”
“I never wanted to say anything, I didn’t want things to be like this.”
“Like what?”
Joel shrugs, looking down at his hands resting on the countertop. “Weird, or awkward, or whatever.”
Sighing you take a few large gulps of your wine, wincing slightly. “It doesn’t have to be.”
“So we’re both just going to be drunk all the time to deal with it?”
“No,” you state, voice stern. “Especially not you since you obviously can’t handle your liquor anymore,” you tease, trying to lighten the mood.
“You better not,” Joel chuckles, shaking his head. “I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve ended up holding your hair back after you’ve taken too many shots.”
“Well at least I’ve graduated to wine,” you giggle, leaning onto your elbows that were planted on the countertop. “How long?”
“How long what?”
“How long have you…you know, felt that way towards me?”
Joel’s cheeks flush and you knew him well enough to know that the way he’s staring at the counter not answering verbally was answer enough in itself. But you still wanted to hear him say it, so you let the silence continue as you pour yourself another glass of wine. “Uh…like, um, since high school.”
“Joel,” you exclaim. Of course you had assumed it had been awhile based on his reaction, but not nearly that long. “No,” you say, not wanting to believe that. All those times he had heard about dates you were going on, guys you were into. You didn’t want to believe you had been forcing him to sit though that for so long.
“Yes,” he says making you groan loudly.
“Joel, that’s so fucking embarrassing,” you wine, downing another half a glass of wine in one gulp.
“I know it is, you don’t need to make me feel worse about it.”
“No, not for you.” Bringing your hands to your face you press them to your skin, squeezing your eyes shut as more and more memories come flooding back. Making out with guys at the club with Joel just a few feet away, asking for dating advice, talking about all your new and fleeting crushes. “I’m sorry, I feel like such a bitch.”
“Why?” Joel laughs, shaking his head. “I never told you, I knew you weren’t into me so I was just trying to get over it.”
“How did you know I wasn’t into you?”
Shrugging Joel glances at your glass as you set it back down, nearly empty again. “You never talked to me or treated me like the guys you were interested in.”
You swallow the last of the wine in the glass before filling it up again, this time silently vowing to drink the glass at a reasonable pace. “You kissed me,” you state, is if only now you were realizing that it had happened.
“Yeah, I did.” Joel lets out an uncomfortable chuckle, shifting in his seat.
“It kind of sucked,” you tease with a playful smirk.
“You’re so fucking mean sometimes, do you know that?” Joel laughs.
Shaking your head you take another sip of your wine even though you knew you were already feeling tipsy after not really having started drinking very long ago. “I just would have expected you to give it more effort.”
“I can give it more effort if that’s what you want.”
Humming you pretend to contemplate it before shrugging. “I’m not opposed.”
Joel stares at you, a serious look falling across his face. “Don’t do this.”
“Do what?” You whine, leaning across the counter closer to him.
“I just told you I’m in love with you can you not joke about wanting me to kiss you?”
Sighing softly you glance down at your glass of wine. “What if it’s not a joke?”
“Now you’re drunk and lying to me.”
“I am not,” you defend. “I don’t know, I don’t know how I feel, Joel. I mean you’re hot, I’ve always known that. And I love spending time with you, more than any other guy I’ve ever tried to spend time with. Honestly, I think you may have actually fucked up my chances of every having a boyfriend because every time I go out with a guy it’s awkward and weird and I just end up comparing it to spending time with you.” You hadn’t realized how much you were rambling or how much you were admitting and when it hits you a flush of warmth comes to your cheeks and you down the rest of your glass of wine, forgetting all about your vow.
“Can’t really say I’m sorry to hear that.”
Scoffing you shake your head, narrowing your eyes to glare at him. “That’s so mean.”
“How?” Joel exclaims. “Being in love with you is kinda making it hard for me to have a girlfriend.”
“Sorry,” you tease with a giggle. Reaching into the cupboard you pull out another wine glass, pouring a glass for yourself and one for Joel.
“I don’t drink wine,” Joel reminds you as you set it down on the counter in front of him.
Rolling your eyes you pick up your own glass from the counter. “Grow up,” you tell him, walking into the living room and settling down on the end of the couch.
“I thought you didn’t want me drinking anymore anyway.” Joel sits down on the other side of the couch, the glass of wine in his hand anyway.
“I don’t want you blacking out every couple days…But I also don’t want to be drinking alone so maybe we can worry about that tomorrow.”
“Okay,” Joel chuckles, his eyes laser focused on you.
“So,” you say, drawing the word out with an expectant smile.
“I shouldn’t have told you,” Joel mutters, groaning as he tips his head back, staring at the ceiling now. “You’re just going to joke about it and it’s going to be weird and I just want things to go back to the way they were.”
Sighing you set your glass down on the coffee table, uncertain how you were supposed to handle this. It’s not like you had experience dealing with this situation. Slowly you untangle your legs from where they were crossed in front of you, making your way closer to Joel. With a deep, courage building breath you swing one knee over to the other side of him. Somehow you weren’t able to get yourself to fully relax into him, staying up on your knees to keep your body from pressing against his. “Go back to the way they were? Getting blackout drunk because you thought I was hooking up with someone else?”
Joel stares up at you, his lips parting like he was going to say something, though he doesn’t even make a sound let alone words.
“Are you going to say anything?” You whisper, moving your hands from the back of the couch to place them on his shoulders, one sliding to the back of his neck. You hadn’t realized how fast your heart was racing till that moment, your face feeling much warmer than normal and you can’t tell if it’s the wine or the situation but if you had to take a guess it was probably the situation. “No?” You tease, leaning down a little closer.
“Okay, get off me,” Joel grumbles, leaning back further into the couch, attempting to put any possible distance between your bodies.
Your eyes widen as you push yourself off of him, standing up before shaking your head and turning around. “Just go home if you’re to be like this,” you snap, walking towards the kitchen, but trying to get away from him wasn’t very easy in the small, open-concept apartment.
You can tell he had gotten up but you keep your back to him, facing the kitchen counter as you wait to hear the front door. Instead you feel his hand on your shoulder, pulling you around to face him as you let out a startled gasp. His hand is under your chin a second later, tipping your head back forcefully before pressing his lips to yours, kissing you with equal parts anger and longing. He pulls back faster than you were hoping and he takes a step away, eyes cold. “Is that what you want? Just want to fuck around with me and embarrass me for having feelings for you?”
He’s about to take another step back when you reach forward, grabbing the collar of his shirt and tugging him closer. You’re on your tip toes when you kiss him again, just as forceful and filled with a fiery energy. “Fuck you for thinking I would do that,” you snap as you let go of him, sliding out from between him and the counter.
You don’t make it far before he has his hands on you again, pushing you back to the counter as his lips return to yours. It’s fast and it’s eager and your hands are all over each other. You don’t even have time to process what’s happening before your clothes are scattered around the kitchen floor and Joel has you bent over the kitchen table. His hands are firm on your hips and you’re moaning loudly as the edge of the table digs into your legs. By the time you’re done your body is hot and flushed and Joel is pressing gentle kisses to your shoulder as you stand up straighter, as it was the most normal thing to have happened all night.
“Oh, fuck,” you breathe out, turning around to look up at him as he’s pulling his underwear back on. “I, um, I’m on birth control,” you stammer, barely able to look him in the eye.
“I figured,” Joel chuckles, leaning down and pressing his lips to your forehead. “When you were begging for me to cum inside you.”
Groaning you pull away from him, crossing your arms over your chest. “Yeah, whatever.”
“What’s up? Are you okay?”
“No,” you snap, reaching over and picking up his shirt from the floor, knowing it was going to cover more of you than any of the others clothes that scattered around. “I just got raw-dogged by my best friend in my kitchen,” you exclaim. “And now I’m a fucking mess and and I don’t know what this means for us and I just…I don’t know Joel, I don’t want things to change, I don’t want to lose you and I’m fucking scared.”
“Woah,” Joel mutters, wrapping his arms around you and pulling you into a tight hug. “I don’t know what this means either but you’re not going to lose me, I promise.”
Nodding you blink away the layer of tears that had filled your eyes, your grip on him just as firm as his was. “Okay...but, um, your cum is dripping out of me, can you let me go now?”
Joel pulls back, clearly trying and failing to hide his laughter as you pick up your underwear and hurry to the bathroom. When you re-emerge Joel has moved from the kitchen to the living room, sitting back in the spot where all of this started. Slowly you walk over and sit down next to him, letting yourself cuddle into him. “What do we do now?” You whisper.
Joel’s arm is around your shoulders, fingers gently running along your arm. “I don’t know. I know what I want but I think you need more time to figure out what you want.”
“Will you give me the time?”
Joel squeezes your shoulders gently. “Of course I will, as much time as you need.”
“Okay,” you whisper, your eyes feeling heavy as you sit up again. “Want to spend the night?”
“Yeah, I do,” Joel replies, letting you take his hand and guide him to your room. It wasn’t the first time but it was the first time that it felt like this.

It’s Joel’s birthday🥳🎉 so in honor of his special day, please read my fic😌✨
a summer in syracuse
Tumblr media
(Gif credit to @tylerglasnow)
word count: 5,115
warnings: none
genre: summer romance, strangers to lovers, self insert, fluff
a/n: I’ve been quietly working on this fic since February and I’m finally dropping it. I actually applied to a summer research opportunity at syracuse university (unfortunately, I didn’t get in) and I had one of those before you go to sleep, dream prompt scenarios that was like “imagine if COVID didn’t exist and you went there and somehow ended up falling in love with Joel, what would that look like?” So based on the different details I would come up with to help me fall sleep (I never dreamt about it), here’s my beezy fic. I haven’t written a fic since 2014 and I’m no Nicholas Sparks so I tried my best at this. I’ve also never been to upstate New York so I just relied on my imagination and Google to help create the scenes. I’m not transitioning to becoming a fic writer, I just caved into the idea and wrote it out. It’s written with a female reader in mind because I’m a cis female but if you want to, you could make it apply to anyone. It's intended to be a self-insert to where the reader can imagine themselves or a character of their choice in the position. It’s also lowercase intended and there’s no dialogue because I wanted to do something different. Shoutout and thank you to @thestarsintheskyburnout for reviewing and editing this story for me. I’m open to any and all feedback, comments or questions; just put them in my inbox or dm me. Thank you in advance for reading, I appreciate it and I hope you like it😌 (p.s. if you have the time, I would also really appreciate if you checked out my other piece, know your heart. Thanks☺️)
(Note because I already know that someone is going to bring it up: yes, Joel actually has a vsco that he still actively uses. The only reason why I know that is because last year, someone (I can’t remember who) shared a photo from his vsco on here and put it as a source for a photo. I probably won’t share the vsco info for the sake of controversy and drama. Don’t come into my inbox about it.)

“you were mine for the summer, now we know it’s nearly over. feels like snow in september but i always will remember. you were my summer love. you always will be my summer love” -summer love by one direction
you were fidgeting in your seat from excitement and also as a way to keep yourself awake. you hadn’t slept much the night before because you were making sure that you had everything you needed for your trip and you were tired from spending the majority of your day in either an airplane or an airport. you kept tapping your feet on the floor and began sending your final texts to your family and friends and you were looking for the right playlist before the plane took off. you were blessed with the opportunity to go spend 8 weeks in syracuse, new york to work on a summer research project at syracuse university. you were so wrapped in your bubble of excitement and exhaustion that you didn’t notice the guy who sat next to you. he looked over at you with a side eye and he contemplated switching seats. this flight, however, was full so he stayed in his place. he grew slightly annoyed with you and wondered how someone could have this much energy for a boring flight to his hometown.
as the plane began rolling away from the terminal, you took out your gum and politely offered the guy in the glasses with the sharp jawline next to you a piece. he accepted and you noticed that he was wearing a black philadelphia flyers sweatshirt with the number 86 on it. something about him felt familiar so you complimented him on the sweatshirt and asked if he was a fan of the team. that’s when he revealed who he was, introducing himself as joel farabee, a forward for the flyers. that’s exactly why he was familiar to you because you watched him play before during the 2019-2020 playoffs and during the recent 2020-2021 season but you didn’t pay much attention to him specifically (your attention was more focused on a defenseman, a giraffe named phil myers). what were the chances that you would be seated together on a flight to syracuse? you told joel that you were a fan of his team but that you didn’t pay close attention to the entire roster. he laughed because he knew that he was only in his second season in the nhl, putting up great numbers but still gaining momentum within the team and that the team had other superstars, who casted a larger shadow over him. you knew that they had a rough season. you apologized for not noticing him and he accepted it. he asked you about why you were so excited to go to syracuse, it was a college town with nothing much to do unless you like to be outside, party or spend time in the library. you explained to him about the research project opportunity you were granted with and how it was your first time going there. for some reason, knowing that it was your first time there, it sparked an idea in joel. he decided that he wanted to be a tourist in his hometown and show you around. yes, he did spend the majority of his life there and he goes back every major holiday to see his family but he never really got the opportunity to show what the region had to offer and he wanted to do something slightly different this summer. his typical summer plans were to work out, practice at the rink, hang out with his friends, spend time with family, go fishing and catch up on sleep. he could still fit those things into his break and make time to show you around town. he offered to make your summer in syracuse fun, even though you would be spending 8 weeks cooped up on campus. you accepted the offer and exchanged numbers. as the flight continued, exhaustion began to wash over you and before you knew it, you had unintentionally fallen asleep on joel’s shoulder. yes, you had your neck pillow but your head had moved a bit too far over to the left. realistically, he should of woken you up and politely asked you to move your head off of him but he understood that you had spent the majority of your day traveling and were exhausted so he left you alone.
as the plane descended and made its way to the terminal at syracuse hancock international, he woke you up. after realizing that you fell asleep on the shoulder of someone you just met, you apologized to him again and he accepted it. at baggage claim, you thanked joel for being a great flight buddy and he chuckled at your words. his bags came out first and he waited with you until you got yours. he offered to take you to campus but the school had already given you a $100 uber gift card for transportation and you had already ordered the car. before heading your separate ways, you arranged to make plans at some point during your 8 weeks to hang out. in his mind, he had already started planning all of the places he wanted to take you.
____________________________________
after arriving on campus, getting settled in your dorm, and meeting your roommate, you noticed that joel followed you on insta and added you on snapchat. you snapped him a photo of the sunset, which he screenshotted but left you on opened. the following morning, joel sent you a snap back of the home cooked breakfast he was enjoying. you snapped him back a photo of a tree while walking to the research lab, and thus, a streak was born. you and joel began texting each other back and forth consistently. he already knew where he wanted to take you but he didn’t want to initiate the first move yet so he waited until you brought up wanting to go out since you had a much busier schedule.
about 2 weeks into your stay, you had finally decided that you wanted to ask joel about going somewhere. joel suggested going to destiny usa (the large mall in the area but going shopping together in a busy setting wasn’t the best way to get to know someone), the museum of science and technology or the art museum (both places piqued your interest but your research program already arranged dates for a group visit) and even going hiking (it sounded good but it felt odd since you had only just met each other). finally, you both decided that going to lunch at dinosaur bbq (a popular restaurant in town and one of joel’s favorite spots) the following day was the best choice.
the next afternoon, you nervously waited outside of the dorm hall and joel pulled up in a black audi. you took a deep breath before going inside. you trusted that joel was not some secret, dangerous creep and that his intentions were good. in your mind, you decided that if you both didn’t vibe well together during this lunch hangout, you didn’t have to see each other again afterwards. you were going to reject joel’s offer to show you around town and you could always ask your roommate or another member of your cohort to explore syracuse with you. ultimately,  you were wrong; having lunch with joel was actually a lot of fun. it was awkward at first because you were nervous. you barely spoke to him on the ride to the restaurant, not wanting to embarrass yourself by saying something wrong in front of him or creating the wrong impression. on the other hand, joel was cool, calm and collected. he didn’t think too much of going to lunch with you. he could tell that you were nervous and he didn’t want to push you to speak.
while you waited for your food, you carefully tried to choose your words and began opening up to each other. you both exchanged surface level basic details about your lives. the heart to heart stuff was being saved for later on, because you didn’t want to push each other away with the deeper details and the trust between you two hadn’t yet been established. you tried not to include hockey in your conversation, but it was a huge part of joel’s life and he had no issue talking about it with you. he willingly answered your questions about the behind the scenes of the nhl and you equally responded to his questions about your research project. you learned that you both shared certain things in common and some things you differed on; he even made you genuinely laugh a few times. throughout the meal, you realized you admired joel’s dorkiness and charm, while he admired your down-to-earth spirit and kindness.
when the check arrived at the end of your meal, you graciously offered to pay for both of your meals. joel declined your offer to pay and instead put his credit card on top of yours. you gave him his card back and made a compromise with joel. anytime, you went somewhere together, you would pay for something in exchange for his time and service of driving everywhere. he didn’t mind paying for things and driving the 15 minutes from his home in cicero to pick you up but he agreed to it and you both shook hands. his hands were larger than yours, but oddly, they fit together like matching puzzle pieces. joel took you back to the university and before leaving, you asked joel if you could hug him as a sign of gratitude. normally it would feel weird to hug someone that you had only known for a short while but hugging him felt natural and comfortable. after hugging him goodbye, you told him to text you when he got home. he promised you that he would before driving off and he kept that promise. ___________________________________
after that first initial hangout, you started having joel around more. he would sometimes come visit you in the library and keep you company as you studied. he would always bring snacks or take you out to go get food. sometimes, he would annoy you and you would end up spending more time dealing him and his antics than reading the book’s contents and working on the project. he never said it, but, he was in awe of your academic prowess. he had only spent a year in college before moving onto the nhl and seeing how passionate you were about the topics you studied amazed him.
after a study session, joel offered to take you to go do something fun and he suggested going to the zoo. he hadn't been since he was a child and felt a sense of nostalgia. you were both grown adults, but, a trip to the zoo wouldn’t hurt anyone. you ended up strolling around together at the rosamond gifford zoo on a saturday afternoon. you would stop and read the facts on each of the animals at the exhibits and joel would take photos of them on his vsco and send different ones to his friends. he saw a meerkat and sent a photo to tk. joel told you that you were like an elephant, big brained and full of knowledge. you rolled your eyes at him and indicated that you wanted to get dippin dots. over the cool treat, you and joel exchanged stories from your own childhoods. you told him about where you were raised, your hobbies, and your love for stuffed animals when you were younger. joel told you about his life here in town, his time in boarding school in connecticut, about his days in michigan playing for the us national development team and his short time at boston university.
after the ice cream was finished and the stories were concluded, you wanted to stop by the gift shop to pick up a souvenir from your trip to the zoo. you picked up two magnets (one for your parents home and one for your place). before checking out, you needed to use the restroom and asked joel to hold onto the magnets until you got back. joel took advantage of your short absence to purchase the magnets for you. you were surprised by the kind gesture and thanked him, though you insisted on buying them yourself. as you were both exiting the zoo, joel mentioned how the rose garden was close by. he knew that he wanted to take you there to see the flowers but he didn’t want to be awkward. he knew that the rose garden was a romantic place and as far as you both knew, you were just friends and nothing more. from your perspective, you knew that joel could possibly secretly be involved with another girl back in philly or in his DMs, and he could also have any girl he wanted at the drop of a message anyways. realistically, you were both single and neither of you wanted to admit that a summer romance was quietly blooming between the two of you. after you listened to his suggestion about the rose garden, you had decided to opt out. you definitely wanted to go check it out but you didn’t want to make joel uncomfortable by going there together when you weren’t dating each other. on the ride back to campus, you awkwardly asked joel for more information about the rose garden. he responded telling you how beautiful it was in the spring, how it’s one of his mom’s favorite places in town, and sharing a story about a time he visited. after listening to his commentary and saying goodbye, you wished that you had accepted the invitation. little did you know, joel was feeling the exact same way. ____________________________________ your research project was progressing well, but, as you got closer to the deadline, you jokingly told joel that you were so stressed out and busy that you just wanted to go down niagara falls in a barrel to escape it all. this inspired joel to actually take you to see the marvelous waterfalls to get your mind off of the stress you were feeling. it was a 3 hour drive from syracuse but it was worth taking the trip for you.
on the ride to the falls, joel let you decide the soundtrack for the road trip and he learned that you held a deep love for music. he learned which songs and artists meant a lot to you and even asked you to add some of the songs you played into his library. you didn’t think much of it at the time (besides the fact that you were getting this boy to listen to other genres besides country and rap), however, joel was quietly planning on making a playlist full of the songs you loved - even though some of the songs you played were definitely out of his comfort zone. the purpose of the playlist was to help him feel connected to you after you left.
after the 3 hour drive, you finally arrived in the late afternoon. you did not bring your passport with you, so, you were unable to cross the border into canada and explore that side of the falls. you hopped together, alongside other tourists, onto the maid of the mist boat ride. it took your breath away to see the waterfall up close and in person. you were speechless by its amazing beauty. you felt the mist of the water dance across your skin and your eyes widened in wonder. you couldn’t believe that you were actually in front of niagara falls. while you were inside a bubble of awe, joel admired you and your reactions. it made his heart full, seeing the joy spill out of you. he made sure to capture photos of you and the falls and you both took touristy photos in the classic yellow waterproof ponchos at the cave of the winds. your favorite photo taken that day captured you and joel laughing in the titanic pose in front of the falls. it looked a bit silly but it was a really cute photo of you two together. joel’s favorite photo was a side profile shot of your face, with the water cascading in the background. although, you felt otherwise in the oversized, bright plastic coverup, he truly thought you looked beautiful.
after picking up more magnets and a t-shirt from the gift shop, and watching the falls illuminate at night, you headed back to syracuse. on the ride back into town, you and joel stopped at a diner off of the highway. you sat across from each other, admiring the details of each other under the light, just as you had many times before. however this time, a wave of vulnerability kicked in and you decided to share more about the intimate details of your life with joel. in your mind, some of the things you shared weren’t so great and you felt they could be a reason for him to stop liking you. however, joel saw how the not-so-pretty, broken parts, the seemingly boring, uninteresting things and the little details of who you are, pieced you together like kintsugi. the scars that lined you were flowing with the gold of your love, compassion, and kindness and he liked that about you. it’s what made you so different from all of the other girls out there. sure, on paper the qualities of who you are could be what he needed in a partner but physically, you may not match the expectations of wags within hockey culture. his heart whispered to him that you were something special and that the physical beauty of this world didn’t matter because he knew that you were beautiful on the inside.
at the end of your meal, the waitress dropped off the receipt explaining that she adored when couples came in together and seeing a happy relationship reminded her of her and husband, after losing him many years ago. joel blushed at the waitress’ remark and you thanked the waitress for her service before leaving. you and joel had never talked about your feelings for each other. it was definitely safe to assume that you were friends and nothing more but there was something more lurking under the surface. your hearts both, connected by an invisible string, could sense that love was there but the words never slipped out. the rest of the drive back was awkward. while the music hummed in the background, you speculated that joel wasn’t probably looking for a relationship and you assumed that you didn’t fit his standards anyways. you weren’t a model, you weren’t a sorority sister, you weren’t someone who had a shot at competing on the bachelor. you were just you and you were content with who you are. you knew that dating an athlete wouldn’t be easy but if you knew that he was into you, he was worth the risks and challenges.
while you were wrapped up in your thoughts, joel reached over and grabbed your hand. you were surprised by the move but didn’t let go. he didn’t say anything either because he had similar thoughts about his feelings towards you racing through his mind. you didn’t know that he felt the same way, seeing that you were full of internal beauty and you shined like a light on earth. he was also terrified of what could happen next for whatever was going on between you. he knew that he considered you his friend and he could feel himself falling for you, but, he was worried about what he couldn’t see below him. he wondered if you could handle the pushback associated with being a wag or if you even wanted to be romantically involved with someone like him in the first place. he also wondered if you were falling for him as well or if you just wanted to remain friends.
before you both knew it, you arrived back to campus. despite the awkward car ride, as usual, he dropped you off and you gave him a hug goodnight, telling him to text you when he got home. as soon as you walked into your dorm, you immediately confided in your roommate about your trip to niagara falls and your feelings for joel. she knew that you had been spending a lot of time with joel and she admitted that she adored how well he treats you. your roommate advised you to listen to the whispers of your heart and focus on what it said to you. you considered her words and hoped that your heart said the right things to you and guided you into the right direction. ____________________________________
your final research project presentation was thursday afternoon and your flight home was scheduled to leave friday morning. joel really wanted to make your last night in syracuse special. he was proud of you and wanted to celebrate the completion of your research project experience by taking you out to eat at his favorite hometown restaurant. going out to eat together was not a new thing for you, he had taken you to several different restaurants, but this place was special to him. francesca's was only reserved for special occasions. it was where he had celebrated several of his birthdays, his high school graduation, when he got signed to the flyers, and other important events. based on advice from his older brother, he had never taken a girl there unless that girl was important to him. although you had only known each other for less than 3 months, you meant a lot to him. he knew that you were someone his family and the team would adore.
he waited for you in his car, just as he had done countless times before but this time with a bouquet of flowers for you. he had spent hours with you but the butterflies in his stomach fluttered loudly tonight. he peered out of the window and he thought you looked absolutely stunning in your dress, the color you wore looked amazing on you. when you got closer to the car, he got out, handed you the flowers, and went around to open your door. he complimented you on your outfit and it made your cheeks warm. the flowers he picked for you were beautiful and you admired how he was being extra sweet tonight. on the ride to the restaurant, you complimented joel, saying he looked handsome in his outfit and you thought to yourself that that the both of you look good together.
the restaurant he took you to was very nice. it had brick walls and a lively atmosphere. you could sense that joel was a bit nervous, which was odd, since he was never nervous around you before. you questioned him about it and he explained  the significance of the restaurant to him. you were taken aback that he thought you were special and important enough to him for him to bring you here. that made your heart whisper to you. you had listened to what your heart had to say and not surprisingly, it did say the right things to you.
at the end of the delicious dinner, you wanted to go get ice cream, so joel took you to  the cold stone creamery inside of destiny usa. you both sat and ate ice cream on a park bench in onondaga park, looking out onto hiawatha lake, and admired the stars in the night sky. the reality of your last night in syracuse began sinking in. joel knew that you had an early morning flight, so he drove you back to campus sooner so that you would get enough sleep for your journey back home. he drove to the front of the building and he promised that this moment wasn’t goodbye and he was going to take you to the airport the next morning. before leaving, joel reached over in the backseat and handed you a bag. inside of the bag was a bee beanie baby, a keychain of gritty (the mascot for the flyers), a black philadelphia flyers hoodie matching the one he wore when you first met, and 4 magnets - 2 represented the city of syracuse and 2 were flyers magnets. you were thankful for the sweet gift and admired that joel paid attention to the things you liked. you went in to give joel the usual goodnight hug but this time, he asked if he could kiss you goodnight instead. you accepted the offer. ____________________________________
you didn’t sleep well the night before. your mind was racing with the thoughts of the great night you had and you also wondered about what would happen between you and joel. you said farewell to your roommate and promised to keep in touch with her. her flight was leaving at a different time but yours was an early morning flight back home. it was too early in the morning for you to go to breakfast together so you planned on getting something overpriced and filling in the airport. as he promised the night before, joel was taking you to the airport to say goodbye. he still had about a month left before training camp started but he wished that you would change your ticket and stay longer. you were dozing on and off during the trip to the airport, joel looked over at you and his heart was full. this was the last time that you would be together like this in his car. you were going to miss the unintentional familiarity that you developed sitting in his passenger seat and being physically close to him. he enjoyed the way it felt having you next to him and he too was going to miss that feeling.
as he pulled into the short term parking lot at the airport, you woke up from your nap and an overwhelming feeling of sadness washed over you. you didn’t want to leave him. you had such a good time in a new place and you had gotten to spend time with an amazing guy who treated you so well. your heart swelled with the gratefulness that you had felt for joel, sacrificing his time to spend time with you. he could have brushed off the fact that it was your first time in syracuse and spent part of his summer with anyone else and do his typical summer routine with his old friends. he was under no obligation to drive around his hometown with someone that he barely knew but he had chosen to spend that time being with you - which neither of you regretted for a single moment.
after checking your bags and receiving your ticket, it was time to say goodbye. you weren’t sure how long the line would be for security and you were a little hungry and tired so you knew that you didn’t have much time left together. you were sad that it was all over and whatever you and joel had was done. as absurd as it sounds, you actually fell in love with the friend who made your summer in syracuse fun. the tears began to slowly flow and joel wiped them away. he embraced you in a hug and kissed the top of your head. at that moment, the busyness of the airport quieted for you. in that moment, it was just you and joel holding onto to each other for one last time. he reassured you that this wasn’t the end of what you had together. he still wanted to talk to you, see your beautiful smile, he wanted for you to come visit him in philadelphia and of course, he wanted to show his favorite girl (besides his mom) around town; he wanted more of you and the light that you shined into his life. neither of you wanted to let go but you had to separate in order for you to make your flight on time. he squeezed you a little tighter and planted a departing kiss on your mouth. you smiled at him with tears in your eyes. he joked for you to not fall asleep on anyone’s shoulders unless they were his and got a giggle out of you. although, he thought that you wouldn’t hear him say it but he quietly murmured an “i love you” and you repeated those 3 precious words back to him.
this goodbye hurt a lot but you both knew that the leap made to spend your summer together was worth the fall into the deep unknown of your friendship/relationship. you both wished that you could press rewind, start over and relive the time that you spent together during the past 6 weeks. you weren’t sure if or when you were going to see each other again, you still had time before you graduated from school and joel would be busy with the upcoming hockey season. although, the chaos of what’s to come loomed ahead, you both promised to not forget about each other and to at least remain friends and keep in touch. the future was full of uncertainty and you also weren’t sure if joel would patiently wait for you. he could always find another girl to fall in love with and spend his days with. you also could always find someone for yourself, which would be okay, only the future could tell. you hoped that somehow this would all work out, with the two of you finding a way back to each other. regardless, he had made a impact on you that you would treasure moving forward. you were each other’s summer love and the possibility of moving on hurt but the love you had shared wouldn’t go away as the seasons went on.
with one final hug and look into each other’s eyes, it was time to leave. as you walked towards the security checkpoint with tired eyes, you were exhausted, but it wasn’t a dream and it wasn’t a joke. the feelings and things you had experienced with joel were real. you were brought together for a reason and it was no mistake that you sat next to each other on that flight. an opportunity fell into your hands and you both had chosen to not let it slip away. you were both the one that the other had waited all of this time for and that patience had paid off. even if it didn’t end up turning into a full romantic relationship, the friendship and bond that was created between you was worth the time and effort that was put into it. your summer in syracuse was over but you would never forget the memories you made with a certain flyer and the love that you shared with him.

summary: sometimes media conferences are just so unbearable you're left with no choice but to immediately seek out the one person with the ability to distract you from the mess of it
warnings: swearing, fluff
word count: 3.5k
Tumblr media
“What does a typical year look like for you in terms of where you’re going to be, where you’re planning to be, when you’re not playing soccer or training?”
You looked down at the table, rolling your eyes, before looking up towards the various cameras set up in front of you. The voice that had spoken came somewhere from your right, but with the lights blaring from the cameras,  you couldn’t quite make out who it was standing next to it.
The question ran through your mind, and you tried to keep a neutral face when the implications of exactly what they were talking about were clear. You’d stated before that you weren’t comfortable discussing your personal life with the media, even before the whole thing with Joel was rumoured, and despite knowing they’d come back with more pokey, invasive questions this season, it did nothing to help the swell of irritation sparking at your fingertips.
“I’m just here to talk about soccer.” You shrugged uncomfortably, eyes wearily scanning the media crowd, awaiting your next question.
As much as you loved what you did, the worst part of it was definitely having to deal with the media.
“...was wondering what your living situation is now considering Mewis was traded to the WSL?”
You sighed into the microphone, “Uh, it’s not really about soccer, but…” you breathed a laugh. You’d answer this one, though, (even though there was a hint of thinly veiled curiosity about exactly where you were residing and who with) mostly just because it was about Kristie, “Yeah, unfortunately I’m not living with Kristie anymore, but I managed to keep hold of the apartment here which was pretty lucky, and I wish her all the best for her future at West Ham; I know she’s gonna kill it out there.”
There was a general hum as reporters seemed to agree and nod their heads, offering smiles that were bordering dangerously between being a little condescending or pitying, before another voice cut in, this time towards the back, “There’s two more months before your season starts, is there anything in particular that you’re working on to improve your game in the off-season, or have you just been taking a break?”
“You make it seem like taking some time off is a bad thing.” You commented drily, breathing a rather uncomfortable laugh into the microphone.
“Oh, I didn’t mean it in that sense, I was just wondering what you’ve been getting up to in the off-season.”
Fuck.
You inhaled, nodding to bide your time and stall to get your words in the right order, “Yeah, I’ve been resting, trying to recharge for next season and get my mind in order, but I’ve also been training, too.”
“We saw from the Philadelphia Flyers’ hockey team’s socials that you’d also been getting involved there–”
You felt yourself tense.
“And I guess I was just wondering if the Flyers are a team you support in the NHL?”
The breath you’d been holding flew past your lips in a relieved breath, “Yeah, they are. I grew up in a household that were strictly Flyers fans, so it was a pretty special moment getting invited as their guest. I brought my family along, too, which was pretty cool.”
“Did you get a chance to meet Gritty?”
The next laugh was genuine when you nodded, “I did. I was nervous going into that, but I came out alive so I’m taking that as a win. Gritty was great–”
“I know you said you don’t talk about your personal life, and I’m not gonna ask a question, but you were recently pictured leaving a cinema–” you stifled a groan and pressed your hands against your face to shield your reddening cheeks from the cameras. It was bound to come up at some point, and it wasn’t that you didn’t want to talk about Joel, because a small part of you did, but if you did – if – then that’d just distract from your job and more journalists would feel more entitled to ask more questions, and it just wasn’t something you were interested in, “with Flyers’ left wing, Joel Farabee–”
You sighed tiredly, shutting the door behind you, an hour and a bit of travelling back to Philly after the day you’d been subjected to catching up to you. You weren’t technically supposed to be back here until tomorrow, but the first step you’d taken out of that conference room was enough to have you booking an earlier train and risk getting in late, rather than getting the train early in the morning.
The whole of the bottom floor of the house was silent, and your eyes seemed to automatically seek out the expected line of shoes next to the door as you toed your own off, just to gauge who exactly had decided to spend the night. Joel’s you recognised, but there were also another two pairs – most likely belonging to Tyson and Frosty.
You shrugged off your coat, picking up the holdall you’d already had pre-packed from this morning, before tiptoeing up the staircase, mindful for any possible light sleepers, ensuring not to step on a creaky floorboard. There was a small light on in the hallway, and the door to Joel’s room was cracked open slightly, a murmur of sound and flashing lights seeping through from the TV.
You paused on the landing, peeking your head around and concentrating on the sound.
The fucker was watching a rerun of your conference from earlier.
Your feet decided to move before your brain could even realise what was happening, because before you could wallow in the fact that he’d clearly known you were on your way back earlier and purposefully left the hall lamp on, you’d pushed open the door a slither more to sneak through without making too much noise, and were greeted with a softly smiling Joel – his eyes fixed onto the conference before flicking to you in the doorway.
“You’re such a sight for sore eyes.” You sighed gratefully, taking in his PJ-clad form lounged casually on top of the covers. He had one arm resting on the top of his head rather lazily, his other draped across his torso.
“Well, I’m always glad to be of service.” He grinned, pushing himself to sit up, his arms now resting across his kneecaps, “That bad, huh?” He gestured to the screen at the foot of his bed, and you nodded, dropping your bag on top of the covers and leaning down for a much-needed kiss.
“It started off fine, but right about now,” you nodded, cringing, “you can tell they’re trying to get nosy.”
“I hate it when they do that.” He agreed solemnly, not saying much else, but watching you with intrigued, patient eyes as you dug around in your bag.
You shot him a glance, taking in the eye bags and bleary blinks as he fought off sleep, “You didn’t have to wait up for me, y’know?” You murmured, unable to help smiling – both at the soft man in front of you, and at the triumph of finally locating what you were looking for.
Joel just shrugged, albeit a little bashfully, “I figured…I don’t know, I just missed you.”
You felt a small lump gather in your throat at his honest confession, and you fought off the sudden emotion that seemed to be the consequence of your fatigue and refusal to sleep on the train, and chose to throw the bag on the floor – gently – and climb on the bed. Joel seemed to expect that kind of reaction, because before you’d even done any of that he was lifting your side of the duvet up with a smile that just blew your damn mind every time you saw it.
The shirt clutched in your grip, you followed him, climbing under the covers and automatically going to lay on your side, face-to-face with Joel, who’d tucked one arm under his pillow and had one leg draped over yours to pull you closer.
“I missed you, too.”
“‘S that why you came back earlier?” He teased gently, still blinking slowly.
You reached a free hand up to run through his hair, relishing in the way his eyes seemed to flutter closed and the slight lean into your touch, “Yeah.” You whispered.
At your voice his eyes reopened, looking all the more exhausted than mere seconds before, and before you could even say anything he was yawning loudly and stretching his arms over his head before using the momentum to roll…right onto you.
Despite the clenched fist, you wrapped your arms across the broad expanse of his shoulders, pressing a quick kiss to his messed hair, smothering a delicate laugh when he groaned against your collarbone, “What did you do today that’s got you so tired at nine in the evening?” You asked softly, carding a hand through the back of his hair.
Any previous effort he’d made to keep some of his body weight off you was forgotten when he physically melted in your arms at the sensation, a muffled, incoherent mumble tumbling from his lips.
“Sorry?”
He lifted his head off your skin ever so slightly, his eyes still shut but looking in your general vicinity, and you couldn’t help it when your finger traced the bridge of his nose affectionately, once more causing his eyes to fly open at the sudden contact, jumping slightly at the sudden intrusion.
You welcomed the attention though, something he seemed to catch up on by the way the corner of his mouth twitched slightly.
“Me and Frosty got dragged to an entire afternoon of Padel with Tys.” He sighed dramatically, “And I’m jet lagged, I think. Maybe. I don’t know, it’s like all the tiredness has just accumulated and I’ve been in bed since, like, six.”
“Poor you.”
He blinked, raising an eyebrow, “Well, excuse me–”
“No, I wasn’t being sarcastic.” You interrupted, trying not to laugh at the hurt expression on his face, “I don’t think.”
He rolled his eyes, flopping back into his previous position against you, and you felt a stab of guilt for what you were about to do, “Joel?” You poked him, once more rousing him from a much-needed sleep.
He groaned audibly, lifting his head from your shoulder, keeping his eyes glued shut to ward out the harsh lights emanating from the TV. Your conference was still playing in the background, and although the volume was on the lowest setting you knew he could still hear it.
“Two things,” you started, lifting the hand with the shirt up into his eyeline, and despite having them previously shut, the disturbance in light must have indicated that you were shoving something in his face, because he blinked his eyes open, staring at the black and white stripes, “This was waiting for me in my locker this morning – I got my new kit today and it seemed like someone on the team said something to the kit people, because…”
You trailed off, an awkward smile on your face. Your relationship with Joel was fairly new; not new in the sense that you’d only been dating a few months but new in the sense that this would be the first season you’d start with him as your boyfriend, all the way over in Philly. He’d also given you something similar back in September before the regular NHL season started, and as his eyes scanned over the material scrunched in your fist, there seemed to be some kind of recognition of his parallel moment with you because he pushed himself up and out of bed, taking the shirt from your hands gently.
He didn’t say much, just slowly unravelled the material. His jaw had dropped somewhere along the way, but his eyes didn’t falter as they roved across the expanse of the front of the jersey, taking in the new design, fingers tracing absently over the embroidered logos. Just as you were about to encourage him to turn it over, he did so, expelling a short breath as he took in your surname and number printed there.
“Is this your new home jersey?” He mumbled, turning to you with some kind of astonishment in his eyes.
You nodded, knowing he hadn’t quite gotten what it was that you’d intended to convey, “Yeah.”
Then, with a flicker of hope igniting on your chest, he gasped softly, “Am I allowed to see this now if it hasn’t been released to the fans?”
You raised a brow, blinking at him.
You loved him, you loved him so much, but sometimes he just made teasing him a little bit too easy. In this case you couldn’t tell if he was a little hesitant to make assumptions, or if he was just downright oblivious as to why you’d given him the jersey, but you smiled nonetheless.
“Yeah, the new kits are gonna be released tomorrow.” You continued, hoping that he’d at least catch on soon.
But he just nodded, “This is so cool.”
Right then.
“Glad you think so, because it’s yours.” You admitted, watching his face carefully.
He froze, the shirt getting a little more crumpled in his grip as he stared at you, lips parted in shock, “Mine?”
You just hummed, biting your lip to stop your grin from splitting your cheeks, and instead moved to show him the inside label of the shirt, not oblivious to the heat of his faze on the side of your face as you did so, “Look at the sizing, and also,” you lifted the bottom of the shirt up, flipping it inside out to show him the customised piece you’d requested to be added, “your name is printed on the inside of the shirt, right where your heart is. I mean, it’s not on mine, but this one’s customised for you–”
“I’m in love with you.”
You inhaled sharply, head snapping to look at him. His gaze was so intense you could almost feel it burning your skin, and despite the shock that had been painfully clear on his face mere seconds before, there wasn’t a single trace of it there now. In fact, he looked a little nervous, something that not only combatted his usual demeanour, but also the conviction with which he’d just stated those five words, yet there was a hint of a smile on his lips.
Like he was relieved he’d thrown the words out there.
You’d thought about this moment with Joel before, hundreds of times. You expected you’d feel somewhat changed by the knowledge that the person you love also loves you too, like your DNA would alter and you would feel noticeably different, but instead you were crushed by a wave of calm.
It felt an awful lot like unadulterated happiness.
“I’m in love with you too.” You said, delighting in the way his grin seemed to grow and all nerves seemed to be extinguished at your reciprocation.
Gosh, he was just so infectious in everything he did.
It kind of drove you crazy, especially when you’d come down from a big loss and you’d FaceTime him in different timezones, and all you really wanted to do was rant, but the fucker was sitting pretty in your phone grinning straight at you and all previous anger just always seemed to dissipate instantly. It annoyed you that you couldn’t control that kind of thing, but the peace and the calm he allowed you to feel even after a mere conversation was unlike anything you’d ever experienced. It was divine.
“Cool.” He nodded, his grin not dimming a single bit, even as he tore his attention away from you to the shirt laid on the bed.
“Cool.” You echoed, shrugging.
You wanted to laugh, but you held it in for Joel’s exhausted sake.
“You said there were two things?” He turned back to you, grabbing the back of his PJ shirt with his hand and yanking it unceremoniously over his head to toss it to the end of the bed. You barely had a chance to get a word in for ogling him before he’d thrown your jersey on and pushed himself from the bed to stand in front of the mirror.
You let him check himself out in the shirt, which seemed to fit him spectacularly well, “You look so good. Like, insanely gorgeous.”
He flushed a little bit, but played it off by pretending to tense his guns in your direction, “I do?”
You nodded, breathing an amused laugh at his antics, “You always do, but even more so in that jersey.”
“Did you know,” he started, throwing himself back on the bed next to you, “that you’re the only person I’d ever wear a soccer shirt for?”
You pursed your lips, tilting your head, “I don’t think that’s the compliment you intended it to be.”
“I just mean that in the sense that – I mean, of course I like soccer – but I’d only ever wear your name on the back of a jersey, or have your team on the front.” He elaborated, throwing his arm across your shoulders to draw you closer, “But thank you for this, I love it.” He said into your hair.
You turned your head, catching his mouth with your own, and enjoying the moment, before pulling away, much to his dismay, “Would you ever wear a Canada jersey?”
He paused, pulling an unsure face, “Again, only if it was a soccer one with your name on it.”
“Likewise with yours, for future reference, by the way.” You rested a finger on his chin, using the leverage to turn his head towards the TV, “And the second thing: you’re probably going to want to watch the end of this conference.”
You felt his face contort from where your hand rested on his cheek, and without even thinking much about it, you leant forward to press a delicate kiss against his cheekbone, breathing a laugh when he scrunched up his face and manoeuvred you to his mouth once more, where you placed one, two, three kisses, before pulling away to answer his question, your cheeks warm.
“They ask about you.”
He stayed still, but you knew his eyes had flickered to the screen, right to where the you from hours ago was sitting at a long table, a hoodie and cap on, looking as awkward and out of place as you felt, in front of a row of cameras and lights, with question after question being fired at you.
“They do?” He whispered, turning his head to look at you to gauge your reaction.
“Yeah. Well, kind of. They start hinting at it with the last few questions.” You don’t meet his eyes, your own attention fixated on you on the screen, and just as you went to move in the conference, there was a slither of something that caught your eye, “No way. Fuck.” You mutter, feeling Joel pull away a little from where his cheek was resting against the side of your head comfortably.
“What’s wrong?”
You reach across him to find the remote, before pausing the TV and turning to look at him with an uncertain glance, “This hoodie, I always forget it, but the zipper’s a bit broken, and if I move too much, the zip falls down.” You pulled the zip about a quarter of the way down, seeing Joel’s eyes widen in realisation, before he turned to the TV, only to see the exact same image staring right at him.
“Oh.” His lips were parted in shock, but he didn’t look particularly angry or irritated by what he saw. In fact, there was a mischievous tilt to his mouth, and before long his shoulder began to shake with an effort not to laugh at the entire thing.
You, however, had a more pressing issue, “Is that okay with you?”
He stopped laughing, turning to face you, “Of course it is. Is it okay with you?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay.”
“Okay.”
You reached to press play once more, trying not to wince whenever the black Flyers shirt under your Gotham zip-up was made abundantly clear. No wonder they’d started asking you about Philly and no wonder that journalist had mentioned the cinema trip with Joel.
Of fucking course.
You were thrown out of your own head when Joel cackled loudly at the screen, climbing back under the covers.
“What?” You asked, following his motions, a smile on your face, mostly because he was also smiling.
“I had no clue we were spotted leaving ‘Anyone But You’.” He breathed, tucking his hand under his head as he leant back against the pillows, looking significantly more awake than he had earlier, “Is it cool if I wear this jersey for the walk-in for my next game?”
Your eyes slid over to him, taking in the uncertainty in his features; his brows were raised in an effort to tell you that he wouldn’t mind if you said no to him. He was asking if it was okay with you to confirm your relationship.
You felt your teeth catch your bottom lip, trying to stifle the blush sweeping across your cheeks and the smile threatening to break though, “Yeah, it’s cool.”
“Awesome.” He grinned cheekily, a little smug at your failure to hide your true feelings from him, and you shook your head at the glint in his eye, “Love you, honey.”
You just blinked at him, lips pursed in a still-dire effort to not smile at him.
“Say it back.”
“Love you too, Joel.”

My prompt.... Joel and Libby living in Philly in present day.... Lib finds out she's pregnant. Scared to tell joel
I loooooove this and you for requesting it. They are my whole heart 🤍
“No no no no no.” Libby said covering her eyes and shaking her head.
There it was.
A small, pink plus sign, clear as day on the test sitting on the bathroom vanity.
Fuck.
She felt tears well in her eyes and let out a wet cough. A baby was the absolute last thing they needed right now and she wanted to curse at herself for her lapse in responsibility. She’d missed 4 days of birth control last month, and hadn’t even thought about it when they drank half a bottle of wine ran to the bedroom after.
Joel was in the midst of another disappointing season in which his frustration was beginning to boil over at home. They bickered more than they ever had and throngs in the house had been tense. This was going to complicate things even further.
They hadn’t been opposed to having a baby…someday. But that day was not today.
Tears fell freely as she attempted to read the paper inside the test box hoping there was a higher chance of a false positive than there actually was. No luck.
She wouldn’t be surprised if they broke up over this. Especially considering Joel’s foul mood he’d been in since his three day healthy scratch that night evolve into four days which she wouldn’t know about till after he returned from practice. She looked at the ceiling and closed her eyes.
What was she gonna do?
She took a few breaths to calm herself down and looked at the clock. He would be home in less than 5 minutes and she didn’t want to look like she had been crying or he would know something was up. How she was going to tell him she had no clue, but she wasn’t telling him today.
She wrapped the test in a tissue and stuffed it down to the bottom in the bathroom garbage can to conceal it as best she could. She dried under her eyes, and rested a hand on her stomach looking at herself in the mirror. She figured she was about 6 weeks based on the calculations she’d done from when she missed her period. She’d had all the symptoms, nausea, fatigue, constantly having to pee, and her emotions had been a mess. When they started, she knew she was pregnant right away but put off taking the test in hopes they would go away and she could chalk it up to illness.
She heard the key in the lock of the front door and froze, sucking in a breath and wiping under her eyes.
“Libby!” He called as she heard the door slam. He sounded like he was in a good mood and she exited the bathroom, feeling a wave of nausea rise in her throat.
She covered her mouth, feeling she might throw up and came around the corner to find him smiling at her from the kitchen entryway.
He held his arms out “I’m back in tonight!” He said excitedly.
“I’m pregnant.” She slapped a hand over her mouth with a small gasp, not even believing she’d just said it out loud.
A range of emotions crossed his face as his smiled faded and his mouth fell open. Surprise, shock, disappointment to name a few.
“Your what?” he asked eyes squinting.
“I’m- I’m pregnant.” She looked at her feet and then at him “I know this isn’t idea but-“
He scoffed and rubbed a hand over his head and down his face “Libby were 24. We can’t-I thought you were on the pill.”
“I am, but I missed those couple days when I was sick last month. I didn’t think-“
“Yeah obviously.”
She looked up and frowned “You know you were there too. This wasn’t the immaculate conception and you were there too. Why is the responsibility all on me.”
“It’s not but like what are we going to do? We’re not married, we just moved into a 1 bedroom house.” He said holding up a finger “And if I don’t start playing better I’m gonna get traded and you want to add a baby to all that?”
“Well what would you like me to do exactly? Wish it away? We’re adults. We have to deal with it.”
He turned and walked towards the door.
“Where are you going? Joel-“
“I need a minute.”
His minute turned into a long time, and when he didn’t return to pick her up before the game she assumed he wasn’t going to and settled into the sofa to watch it and cry.
She ended up falling asleep, midway through the second and didn’t wake until she heard the door open. The room was illuminated only by the tv as she jumped when the door shut, and sat up to see him making his way into the living room.
“Libby.” He set his stuff down and tossed his tie off coming to sit next to her.
He smiled gently “Libby I’m so sorry. I didn’t-I shouldn’t have said any of that. I just didn’t know what to say and it came out and it was wrong.”
She nodded and sniffled “Its okay. I know it’s disappointing but-“
“No.” He shook his head “I’m not disappointed. Not at all.” He rested a hand on her stomach and smiled “I’m happy.”
She brightened and smiled “Really?”
“Really.”
She breathed a sigh of relief and leaned forward resting her head on his shoulder. Maybe things would be alright after all.

In your opinion, which players do not get enough love on here? For me, it’s Joel Farabee. There is not enough writing for him on here. Does anyone have any recommendations?
i would say that any bottom 6 forward, defenseman who isn't cale makar and goaltenders are ALL underrated guys who don't get enough love on tumblr.
as for joel farabee recs... i found these guys in his tag:
drinking to forget by @hockey-fics - player x reader
bee's on ice by @ilyasorokinn - player x reader
the odds of the body by @callabang - player x player
goodbye osky by @ilyasorokinn - player x reader
love drunk by @sunshinefarabees - player x reader
fell in love with you in stages by @wyattjohnston - player x reader
til the end of time by @hockeyboysimagines - player x original characters
and going through his tag, it looks like there is actually quite a bit for him, so what I have here is just scratching the surface.

things that go bump in the night
countthestars
Summary: The whole ghost hunting thing started out as a joke.
And
Quinn’s whole thing is talking to the dead, but Jack’s gift is dealing with the living.
Recommendation: Two fic series (there was talk of a third but it hasn’t updated in over a year so don’t get your hopes too high). First one centres around TK/Nolpat with a lot of Nico mixed in. Great side character mix of Kevin Hayes, PK Subban, Joel Farabee and Carter Hart. I want more of PK so badly, the glimpses of him are great! Magical realism and ghosties. Great fic, fun read just angsty enough with a happy ending. Love how bitchy Nolpat is and how reckless TK is. Second fic centres around the Hughes bros and the budding relationship between Nico and Jack. But the brothers feel like the beating heart of the story to me. Long suffering Quinn is my fav. Jack is a dumbass who knows what he’s doing, if that makes any sense at all. He could also use a hug and therapy in this. Nico is lovely in this too. Both fics work as standalones.

💖 and 📝 !! (-puckszone)
💖 a fic you read you recently loved and why!
on my thot shit by paleppurpleconeflower
first of all: this fic was REALLY HOT. i was in the mood for some longfic and this was really well written - not a slow burn, just a good long fic. I also really really liked Cale's POV on Nate figuring out that he's into Cale - it was really sweet, and it avoided all the pitfalls that normally bother me in fwb to lovers fics. if you have time to read a 146k fic and are into nate/cale, or open to the idea of them - i recommend it
all that and more by anonymous
UGH I AM READING A WIP because I love sugar baby fics? it's my weakness. and this is really really sweet. Toff is really caring without being creepy even though he SHOULD be and everyone is HILARIOUS. It's 6/10 chapters right now and i eagerly await more chapters.
📝 a fav fic quote
from: came around for a one night thing (and i never left) by whitchbhitch which is carter hart / joel farabee, but i read it like three years ago that's how long this has been jangling around in my brain
"That's your mistake, my man," says Joel. "Speaking of ducks, I have rice in my pocket--" "You have loose rice in your pocket?" "No," says Joel, like it should be obvious. "I have a Ziplock baggie of—wait, hold on. Okay, so, um. Update: the baggie did rip, so I do in fact, uh. I do actually just happen to have a, a pocketful of loose rice."
This quote was SO funny to me when i first read it that it changed the way I spoke forever. That's not a joke. I still occasionally say "loose rice" and make Lur giggle.

A very Merry NHL Christmas
Warnings: Mild cursing, some sexual humor, talks of Christmas, Jesus and the holidays.
This was originally planned for last Christmas but ya girl had writers block. So enjoy this now. Let me know what you think!
Note: this is a small group of blurbs about all the couples currently in process on my Masterlist. This won’t include anyone who’s not currently being written about. Merry Christmas to all who celebrate, and happy holidays to the rest🤍
Tumblr media
‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, the kids were asleep, and Matthew and Brady were trying to get Keith into a Santa costume without laughing too loud.
Chantal had one hand over her mouth as she watched them struggle with the zipper before finally closing the suit, and adjusting Keith’s beard. Brady was red faced, and coughing to cover his laughter as Keith whipped around and glared at him, while Matthew had one hand braced on his knee, the other holding his side laughing openly.
“I’m never doing this again.” He grumbled as he stepped into the boots and straightened up looking for the sack of presents. The kids had set up a hidden camera earlier in hopes of catching a picture of Santa putting presents under the tree. Taryn was outside picking up the reindeer food they had left in the front yard and making hoof marks on the front walkway, the milk and cookies had been disposed of and Emma, who would be spending her first Christmas with them since they got married, was sprinkling sand by the front door because south Florida Santa had no snow to work with. Noticeably pregnant Hallie rubbed her hands together and smiled excitedly. Keith placed the presents under the tree, keeping his back to the camera.
“They’re going to love this.” Chantal said giving her hand a squeeze.
Matthew was smiling at her from the doorway as he watched his dad carefully set out gifts and made his way over. He glanced down at her baby bump and rested a hand on it.
“Merry Christmas in there.” He said softly rubbing it “Can’t wait to celebrate with you next year. And by that time someone else will be taking up your space.”
“Uh I don’t think so.” Hallie said shaking her head “This mama is done….for a little while.”
“How many fucking-freaking kids are you guys gonna have Jesus.” Brady said around a mouth full of Christmas cookie. They were all looking at them mildly interested and Hallie wasn’t really sure how to answer.
Matthew shrugged “I guess until I don’t get it done on the first try.”
Her face burned in embarrassment, and she couldn’t believe she had let him answer, but the others were laughing. He threw an arm around her shoulders “But who am I kidding, that won’t happen. I’m 3 for 3. A triple champ.”
“Yeah kind of like an ugly, skinny, Conor McGregor.” Brady said elbowing him.
That started a scuffle and Hallie crossed her arms shaking her head, eyes moving over their house. Over the pictures on the walls they’d amassed over their years together. The ones that started with just them, and then their family, and then their children. Over the decorations, and lights, and ornaments the kids made for them at school that hung on the tree. Her life was so full, so wonderful.
Taryn bumped her shoulder and smiled, eyes moving around before coming back to meet hers “So? Is it everything you hoped for?” She looped an arm around her waist.
She nodded, reaching an arm around her “It’s more than I hoped for.” And then she laughed when Matthew and Brady’s scuffle dissolved and he came over and grinned at her.
“If you don’t stop fighting with Brady you’ll end up on the naughty list, and you won’t get any presents.” She said, reaching forward to wrap her arms around him, as much as possible, with the baby bump in between them.
“The naughty list is more fun anyways. It’s how I became 3 for 3.”
*************
Music played softly in the background of Pierre’s apartment as snow fell outside. It was warm and cozy, the house smelled of cinnamon, and Mila and Pierre were snuggled on the sofa watching the snow fall.
“It’s so pretty.” Mila said off handedly, eyes following the flakes as they blanketed the ground below them, creating a fluffy white blanket on the ground.
“Not as pretty as you.”
She rolled her eyes and tilted her head up to look at him “Your so cheesy.”
“It’s all part of my appeal babe…which speaking of. I have something for you.” He nudged her so he could stand and disappeared around the corner and came back with a box.
“Here.” Pierre said handing it to her. It was long and rectangular shaped and she took it before looking at him.
“Didn’t I tell-“
“Oh shutup.” He said waving her off “Stop trying to police my spending habits on Christmas.”
She giggled and rolled her eyes “Okay Jesus.”
He held a hand up to his chest “Did you just take the lords name in vain…on his birthday?”
“Okay now you shutup.”
“Open it.” He said nudging his chin impatiently at her.
She pulled off the paper, which was no easy feet as it was wrapped like a car ran over it, and pulled out a long blue velvet box. Inside of it was a shining, glittery diamond bracelet.
“Pierre!” She said mouth falling open “This is-“
“Nope!” He held up a hand “It’s not too much. You are worth every single dollar I spent on that, which is none of your business before you ask.”
Mila bit her lip. It was gorgeous, platinum with what looked like a hundred tiny diamonds, held together by a small clasp with her initials on it.
“Well?” He was smiling widely “Do you like it?”
“Of course I like it.” she held it out to him so he could put it on. She turned her wrist so the light caught the diamonds and smiled a little before looking at him.
“Merry Christmas Mila.”

“Wake up! It’s Christmas Eve!”
Vince felt a weight bounce across his bed, rip the covers off of him, and a body wriggle under the blankets, kicking him out of his warm spot.
Josie had come barreling in the room, smiling so wide it could light up a city’s worth of Christmas lights.
“Noooooo.” He groaned eyes closing again. He reached down and pulled the blankets up over his head, and then pulled her closer, leaning down to kiss her deeply but she pushed away from him and tapped him on the lips.
“Uh uh. Santa says no funny business on Christmas Eve until we do something fun!”
“Well Santa can-“
“Ah! None of that or you won’t get any presents!”
She jumped out of bed and pulled the covers off of him, pointing at a neatly folded pile of clothing, “Get dressed. We’re going somewhere.”
He sighed and rolled over with a groan, but when he saw the look on her face he sat up. She looked so excited, hands clasped under her chin as she stood in the doorway of his bedroom.
“Okay, okay I’m awake.”
She squeaked excitedly and bounced from the room, leaving him to get dressed and brush his teeth. She was bundled by the front door as he came around the corner.
“So where are we going?”
“You’ll see.”
10 minutes later, he was chuckling as they stood in front of an outdoor ice rink, and he knelt down to tie her skates. He finally got them tied, even though her legs were shaking in excitement and looked up at her.
“Do you even know how to skate?” He asked as he adjusted her leg warmer over the top of her skate and then did the same on the other one.
“Nope!” She said brightly, tapping him on the nose and standing, hands resting on her hips “That’s why you’re going to teach me.”
He helped her out on to the ice and stood facing her, gripping both of her hands in his. He skated backwards pulling her along. It was slow going and he was laughing as she went split legged a few times.
“Hang on. I have a better idea.” He skated around her and pressed himself against her back, arms coming to rest around her waist.
“Hang on.” He said lowly in her ear.
Josie smiled with excitement as he started moving, allowing her to just let her skates sit on the ice without having to do anything else. She closed her eyes and breathed in, the winter air stinging her skin.
“Having a good time?” he asked from behind her.
“Always when I’m with you. Are you having a good time?”
“Of course.” He slowed down a little and walked over her shoulder to kiss her cold cheek “Even though I’m doing all the work. Santa had better reward me with a great gift.”
Josie giggled to herself thankful for Christmas with Vince.
And thankful that he didn’t know, she really did know how to ice skate.

“Smile!”
Mat snapped the picture of Leighton and Lucy in front of the tree and smiled.
“Beautiful.”
His first Christmas with his girls had been perfect. The entire month of December had been like something from a dream. Lucy had been to every possible Christmas event they could find on Long Island, often accompanied by her godparents, who were across town celebrating their first Christmas together. Snow angels, Christmas decorating, and even the first time she’d been in an ice rink had all happened in the part month and Mat’s heart felt so full it might burst.
“Let me see.” She squinted at the picture and smiled down at Lucy, who was looking more and more like her as she got older.
“Who’s that beautiful girl?”
He smiled down at them and stood up, setting his phone on the couch and picked up a box and went to hand it to Leighton.
“From Santa. I guess I’m not the only one who thinks you’re beautiful.”
She rolled her eyes and blushed, but pulled out a box and handed it to him. “Here open this first. I think you’re gonna love it.”
He sat on the sofa and pulled at the paper. It was small, enough to fit in his hand. The box was flat, with a cardboard lid and when he pulled it off he saw a blank sheet of paper that said “Pick me up.”
He glanced at her, to find her smiling brightly and she nodded “Go ahead.”
He gripped the paper and pulled, and from it another long sheet of paper fell like an accordion. He pulled it up to look at it and saw that it was t a sheet of paper.
It was a sonogram.
He whipped up his head to find that Leighton was now crying, cheeks red.
“Are you-Oh my god.” He reached forward to hug her, chin resting on her head.
“Are you happy?”
“More happy than I’ve ever been.”
She closed her eyes and breathed him in as he spoke again “This is the best Christmas gift I’ve ever gotten, and I love you.”

“Is this dress to short?” Ginny asked turning in front of the mirror. Beau leaned out of the bathroom and grinned in a way that was not appropriate on any level, but especially not on Christmas.
“Yes. You should definitely wear it. Can’t wait to take it off later.” He leaned back in the bathroom.
She smiled and looked at her closet for shoes. The Islanders Christmas party was in a half and hour and they were running a little behind.
She’d been on time until he came into the bathroom and cracked a joke about opening a present, which turned out to be his jeans and the rest of it was a Christmas story for another time. But not the kind you read before bed.
He walked out of the bathroom looking better than he needed to in a pair of grey pants and a black button up. Ginny paused while she slipped a shoe on, eyes moving from his face to his feet and then back up. He winked and smiled at her.
“Not bad huh? But you’ve got me beat. WOW.” He said as he took in her red dress, and heels. It had been a little over six months and she continued to surprise him by outdoing herself. This was the first big holiday they were spending together and tomorrow she’d be meeting his parents.
He stood staring at her “You look beautiful.”
She smiled and blushed a little. Though she was used to a slew of compliments from him, and she knew he was always being genuine when he said them. But it still made her blush.
“Thank you.” She said softly, slipping into her shoes and turning back to the mirror.
“Are Mat and Leighton coming?”
She nodded and sat at her vanity to find earrings “Yes. She said she has something for me.”
“Like a gift?”
Ginny shrugged “I’m not sure. She just said it was something I would love.” She smiled a little as she poked an earring in her ear.
“You know what I love? That dress. Gosh.”
She rolled her eyes and shook her hair over her shoulder to put in her other earring “Why are you being so nice to me? Keep being too good and I won’t let you unwrap my present later on.”
His mouth fell open “I think it’s supposed to be the other way around. Only people on the nice list get to unwrap presents.”
Ginny smiled at him over her shoulder “I much prefer my present openers to be on the naughty side.”
Beau leaned on the doorway, smile as wide as it could possibly get “Best Christmas ever.”
***********
“Stop laughing.”
“I’m not!” Nash giggled from the ground.
Travis was up on a ladder hanging lights from the archway inside the living room of their new house. She’d insisted for weeks that she didn’t want any there, until she announced she was throwing a Christmas party, and then decided the house wasn’t festive enough, which meant she’d shoved a bunch of lights into his hands and told him to hang them.
“Oh come on!” He yelled as he turned the bulb on one of the strings and the rest went out. He’d been fighting with them for 10 minutes “One goes out, they all stay on. One goes on they all go out!”
“Well at least we know that if hockey doesn’t work out, you won’t have a career as an electrician.” She said from the bottom of the ladder with a shrug.
He glanced over his shoulder “Ha Ha. I’m glad you’re having fun down there.”
“Of course I am. The view is fantastic.” She said with a wink.
Travis chuckled and went back to hanging lights, finally getting them all lit “Finally.” He turned to find her smiling at the bottom of the ladder, hands on her waist “How does that look?”
She nodded and pursed her lips “Perfect. Thank you.”
He shrugged “Don’t thank me. It’s the least I could do. And it makes you happy so it’s a win in my book.”
He made his way down the ladder and pulled her into his arms “Besides. A good deed on Christmas always gets rewarded and I-“
But he was cut short when there was an electrical pop and every light in the house went dark.
“It’s not funny.”
“I’m not laughing. You can’t even see me.”
He grinned “I don’t need to.”
She sighed and he felt her arms slide around his waist “We could just stay here…in the dark I guess.”
“But then how would Santa find our house?” As he said that the lights all lit up at once just in time for him to see her smiled widely at him.
“Who cares? Nothing he could bring me would ever be a better gift that the one I have right here.”
***********
“Merry Christmas!” Sawyer yelled as she pulled open the door to find Nolan’s parents on the other side. She pulled them inside and out of the cold Winnipeg winter and into their cozy house that was full of friends and family.
Nolan was parked on a barstool at the counter watching Sawyer. She was having the absolute time of her life and just looking at her made him want to smile.
It had been a hard year. A hard few years actually but this one in particular had been rough. They’d had so much hope for Vegas and it had only been more of the same, and no one was sure that he’d ever be able to play hockey again. It was sad and scary and she held his hand every minute, but he’d come to terms with it now.
But he didn’t have time to think about it because Sawyer herself came bounding over, hanging mistletoe over his head and kissing him on the cheek with a loud “smack”
“Come on you Grinch! At least smile a little.”
He smiled and she made a face “I mean a real one. Santa is watching.” She pointed upwards.
“I thought that was Jesus who lived up there.”
“Yeah well then he’s watching too. So you won’t get any presents and you might get struck by lightning and that will ruin the whole holiday.” She grinned “And I’ll have to take all these decorations down by myself.”
He chuckled and reached forward, wrapping his arms around her shoulders.
“Thank you.” She said against his chest, quietly enough that only he could hear.
“For?”
“This.” She pulled back and gestured around “I know this isn’t your thing, but it means a lot to me that you let me throw this party.”
“It’s not that bad. I’d do anything to make you happy, you know that. My Christmas gift to you.”
She looked up at him and smiled the most beautiful smile “Your the gift that keeps on giving Nolan Patrick, and no gift could ever be better than spending my life with you.”
Nolan rested his chin on her head “Merry Christmas Sawyer.”
“Merry Christmas Nols.”
************
“Cash will you sit still!” Tyler grumbled as he tried for the third time to stick reindeer antlers on his head. Marshall, Molly and even Gerry were all sitting obediently, but Cash had shaken them off twice. Even though he was as uncooperative as possible, Ava was having so much fun. There was a magic in the air that only lasted one month out of the year that you couldn’t find any other time. The feeling of Christmas was unlike any other and it was the first one she was spending with Tyler, and the first one she could remember being excited for.
She was knelt down, phone in one hand, tennis ball in the other which had the attention of the other three dogs, waiting for Tyler to quit wrestling with their most unruly child.
“Freakin dog.” He said with a huff as he finally got them fastened and made him sit.
“Just like his dad.” She said smiling at him “Okay ready, hey guys!” She waved the ball so they all looked and quickly snapped several pictures before they all started moving with excitement.
“Got it!” she said tossing the ball.
All four took off running after it, skidding through the house and falling over each other like Bambi on ice, and Ava and Tyler both yelled “No!” as Gerry went flying right into the tree.
It swayed for a second before it fell in slow motion as Tyler raced forward to catch it, which he did, but not before it rained ornaments that hit the floor and rolled in all directions.
Ava covered her mouth the keep from laughing and hurried forward as Tyler tipped the tree back up on to its stand, and made a loud noise of annoyance.
“What’s so funny?” He asked when he saw her laughing.
“What’s funny is now you have to help me redecorate it. Since you conveniently seemed to be missing last time.”
“I was at practice.” He said eyeing her with a small smile.
“Sure. That’s why Jamie called looking for you.”
“That douche. Busted I guess. Okay I wasn’t at practice I was out-“ he reached into his pocket and pulled out a box “Buying this.”
She smiled and glanced up as she took it “That’s funny cuz I wasn’t here waiting for you, I was out picking up this.” She pulled a bigger rectangular box from under the sofa.
As they opened their respective gifts she heard Tyler make a noise like a gasp and an exclamation and she smiled. She’d had blown up and framed the first picture they’d ever taken together, them and all four of the dogs. It had been the first time Ava had let anyone take a photo of her in years, and Tyler was so proud of her for it. But she’d kept it hidden, telling him it didn’t take for months. This was the first time he’d seen it, and his eyes softened as he looked at it and then at her.
“I love this. Thank you it’s amazing. We gotta hang this.” He glanced around and picked a spot right by the front door “There. So people see it right when they get here.”
He turned as she pulled her own gift out, a silver locket with a tiny photo of the dogs on one side, and them on the other, and a date a time inscribed on the back.
“This is beautiful, but what’s this?” She asked pointing at the date and time that was engraved at the bottom.
“The day and time I saw you for the first time.”
“Oh my gosh.” She was blushing but he continued “That day and time changed my life. The only thing that could would have made it better was if you wanted to join the mile high club or something.”
She laughed and swatted his arm “Tyler!” She turned holding up her hair so he could put it on and then smiled “Thank you for this and for making every other day better than the one before.” She placed a hand on his heart.
“Thank you.” He said placing his hand over hers “For letting me.”
He squeezed her hand and then pulled her into a hug. He was warm, and she could feel his heart beating through his chest. Tyler smiled and squeezed her tighter. “Best Christmas ever. Don’t you think?” He asked glancing down. She nodded with a small smile.
“Better than all your others?”
“Everything with you in my life is better, Christmas included.” She closed her eyes and squeezed him tightly.
There really was something magical about Christmas.
************
“Ho Ho Ho!” Joel rumbled as he made his way inside of the Connolly’s house. He and Libby had gone home for Christmas and though they wouldn’t be able to stay long, there was no way they were missing her parent’s Christmas party.
“AH!” Heather screamed rushing forward to pull them both into a hug, as she had also voyaged home just for the holidays “Happy kissaversary lovebirds.”
Th house was packed with guests and family and friends, and Libby couldn’t stop smiling. It felt so good to be here in her parents house, on Christmas Eve, with Joel where their story had started. She’d kissed him for the first time right upstairs in her room, and at that moment their lives together began.
“What are you thinking about?” He asked from beside her, arm around her shoulders.
“Oh just about that Christmas Eve when I kissed you upstairs.”
“Uhm no.” He scoffed “It was me who kissed you actually.”
“Im thinking about-“ they turned to find Heather, standing with her sweater half open to conceal a bottle of wine under it. Discreetly they all made their way up to Libby’s room and out on to the roof, bundled in jackets as they each took sips from the bottle.
“Last time we did this we were teenagers.” Joel said from his spot next to Libby.
“The last time your mom had a party was when I was in Florida and you guys were in there making out, thinking we all had no idea.”
“Well you might, but my parents didn’t.”
Heather rolled her eyes “Yes they did Libby. They just didn’t think Joel had it in him so they didn’t care.”
Joel gave her a dirty look and an eye roll, and stared off into space for a second before he asked them “Do you guys ever think about what things would be like if you hadn’t moved here in 8th grade?”
“I don’t like to.” Heather said rubbing her arms “You moving here was the best thing that could have happened to us.” She said smiling at Libby “Because I gained a best friend and Joel finally found someone who would go out with him.”
Libby started laughing, breath turning into fog and Joel’s mouth fell open “On Christmas? Really Heather? Aren’t you already pretty low on the naughty list?”
“I live on the naughty list. Alright I’m not 15 anymore. It’s too cold for this, you guys coming?” She said as she climbed back in.
“In a minute.” She disappeared out Libby’s bedroom door leaving her with Joel on the roof. She reached forward grabbing his hand to hold it in her mittened one.
“If I hadn’t moved here in 8th grade, we still would have found each other some way.”
“You think?”
She nodded and looked out across town, at the black sky, white snow and twinkling stars above their heads “I do. Just would have needed some magic. Some Christmas magic.” She pointed at a star that streaked across the sky and disappeared before she rested her head on his shoulder.
“Can you think of a better way to spend Christmas Eve?” He asked.
She shook her head “No. I want to spend every Christmas Eve here, and every other day of the year with you until we’re old and grey. Promise me that?” She looked up at him, eyes wide under her glasses.
“Promise. Merry Christmas Libby.”
“Merry Christmas Joel.”
