Does an assistant professor need a Ph.D.? Check the updated rules

Many students apply each year for assistant professor jobs at colleges and universities. The entry-level position for entering the teaching profession in colleges has been an assistant professor. The guidelines for assistant professors and Ph.D. holders have been updated by the University Grant Commission (UGC). For individuals who want to work as assistant professors in colleges and universities, the UGC has announced updated eligibility requirements. The updated UGC guidelines for Ph.D. holders and UGC NET-qualified candidates are listed below.

Updated UGC eligibility requirements for assistant professors

The updated statement from UGC outlining the requirements for assistant professor eligibility has been released. Candidates with a Ph.D. are eligible for direct assistant professor hiring. Prior to that, UGC NET Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar stated that starting on July 1, 2023, a Ph.D. would no longer be required for employment as an assistant professor.

According to the updated UGC statement, applicants for assistant professor recruitment must meet the NET/SET/SLET minimal requirements. Without meeting the requirements for NET/SET/SLET, candidates with a Ph.D. are also eligible for direct hiring to the position of assistant professor at all higher education institutions.

These modifications stipulate that Master's degree holders must meet the NET/SLET/SET minimum standard, but Ph.D. holders are exempt from this requirement. The 2018 UGC Regulations are very specific about the requirements for qualifying for many fields, including Journalism & Mass Communication, the Arts, Commerce, Humanities and Social Sciences Education, Law, Social Sciences, and Languages.

The UGC's updated revisions reflect the changing standards and demands in the sphere of higher education. The UGC wants to encourage research and academic quality, hence it has made a Ph.D. requirement for assistant professors. These adjustments make sure that those with advanced research credentials and competence are given preference in the direct hiring process for teaching posts.

Universities and colleges all throughout the nation must immediately match their hiring procedures with the 2018 UGC Regulations as revised. Both Ph.D. holders and non-Ph.D. holders who aspire to become assistant professors should be aware of these modifications and make sure they satisfy the new standards when applying for teaching positions.

As per the most recent update, a Ph.D. is not required to work as an assistant professor. Candidates will only be qualified for assistant professorships if they have a Ph.D. rather than the UGC NET. Any candidate who meets the requirements for both, namely a Ph.D. and the UGC NET, is qualified for an assistant professor or associate professor position. Candidates with both accredited degrees will advance quickly in their positions.

Is a doctorate required after passing the UGC NET?

No, after passing the UGC NET exam, a Ph.D. is not required. An accepted eligibility requirement for the recruitment of Assistant Professors in Indian institutions and colleges is the UGC NET qualification itself. A Ph.D. can, however, offer extra benefits in terms of job chances, research jobs, and better academic positions. It exhibits sophisticated knowledge and research prowess in a certain area.

How can I complete my Ph.D., NET or not?

The UGC NET is not required to pursue a Ph.D. Without meeting UGC NET requirements, a candidate may pursue a Ph.D. By taking a direct university entrance exam for Ph.D. admission, they can apply for a doctorate. Candidates who enroll in a Ph.D. program and pass the UGC NET JRF exam will receive financial aid. The candidate will receive a scholarship for up to five years of Ph.D. if they meet the UGC NET JRF qualifications. In universities and colleges, they will be given consideration for positions as assistant professors or associate professors.

Positions Available for Ph.D. Holders

Candidates with a Ph.D. typically apply for Assistant Professor positions in colleges or universities. Individuals with a Ph.D. enjoy an extensive selection of professional options outside of teaching. The candidate is eligible to work as a research assistant on any project linked to his doctoral studies. Following that, the applicant may receive advancements to Senior Research Assistant at College or University. Candidates who have earned a Ph.D. may apply to research profiles.

It includes studying soil formation, classification and mapping the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil. Soil is not only where our food grows but it is also where we dispose of the waste. Indian Police Services is the central civil service that manages the command and provides leadership to state police forces and the union territories and also Central Armed Police Forces (BSF, SSB, CRPF, CISF & ITBP) and Central Police Organizations. To join defence services you can apply after 12th or graduation. If you want to apply after 12th you must have science in 12th, after that, you have to give an examination of NDA- National Defence Academy which is conducted by UPSC. If you want to apply after graduation then there are several exams like CDS- Combined Defense Services, AFCAT- Air Force Common Admission Test, INET- Indian Navy Entrance Test. Scientists of ISRO and DRDO

Organisations like ISRO and DRDO are engaged in the designing and development of launch vehicles and related technologies for providing access to space. Like Kalpana Chawla & Sunita Williams many other Indians are also taking the dream of being a scientist and aeronautical engineer. Recently ISRO sent a satellite launch vehicle in the moon- CHANDRYAAN II with success. Aeronautical engineering candidates can apply for ISRO and DRDO. You must have a bachelor’s and masters in science and engineering after that PhD in mathematics or physics is an added advantage to you. The recruitment of ISRO scientists is conducted by centralized recruitment board or campus placements in IIT or IISC. The selection will be made through a written examination after that personal interview. Lecturer in Government Institute

The lecturer is an academic rank which is hired by universities and colleges to teach graduate and postgraduates students. If you have a passion for teaching, interest in the related subject, desire to learn new things, perfect communication skills then lecturer is the perfect option for you. In India, if you want to be a Lecturer or Professor you have to attain eligibility like masters in a specific stream with 55% marks for general and 50% marks for SC/ST/OBC. After that, you have to clear competitive exams like UGC NET conducted by UGC for central level universities and colleges, GATE is for engineering aspirants who want to be a Professor and Lecturer in IITs, SLET is for state-level universities and colleges. After clearing the exam firstly you will get a post of associate professor. For lecturer, the starting salary is Rs. 60,000 and it will go nearby 1-2 lakhs according to your post, experience and research.
