Sunday of Suffering (but the women made to/kept themselves on Division 3)
Round 15 of the 2024/25 Liga Portugal 2 season featured União traveling to the last placed Oliveirense.
Related to the last match, Jair and Daniel dos Anjos were benched after very criticized performances in the match against Paços de Ferreira. Dje D'avilla and Jordan van der Gaag returned to the starting eleven. Tiago Ferreira was out: at center back, Zé Vítor made his debut (IIRC he hasn't played before), while Crystopher gave his place to Alisson (questionably since i thought Alisson was poor and Crystopher was average in the last match).
Leiria took the lead by a Sarpreet Singh penalty goal on the first half after he was tackled inside the box after a cross.
After the goal, Oliveirense pressed up and the next chances by União came only shortly before halftime. On this period, Sylla, D'avilla and Singh were booked.
After the second half, the first chance went to Oliveirense, followed by charges by Jordan and Alisson, who scored the second goal of the match on the 68th minute.
Singh was taken off four minutes later, along João Resende (Herculano and Crystopher went in), and one minute later, Oliveirense scored on a blunder by Bura, which passed the ball to an opponent which scored with ease. Two minutes after entering the match, both Herculano and Crystopher received yellow cards.
Both União and Oliveirense exchanged dangerous opportunities, then manager Silas subbed center back Tiago Ferreira in place of Alisson, putting União in a five defenders formation.
Another blunder by Bura made him collide with goalkeeper Kieszek, and Oliveirense came very close to tie the match.
On the stoppage time, Oliveirense went to a last pressuring effort, while Dje D'avilla were sent off after receiving his second yellow card.
After this weekend's results, União stands at the ninth place of the Liga Portugal 2 table, with 21 points. Tondela and Penafiel share the lead and the direct promotion spots with 31 points, while the direct relegation places are occupied by Porto B (13 points) and Oliveirense (six points). Promotion playoff is currently occupied by Torreense (25 points, ahead of Chaves and Académico de Viseu by having more wins, despite Wikipedia stating the tiebreaker is head-to-head away goals scored), with the relegation playoffs spot occupied by Mafra (trailing Portimonense on head-to-head away goals scored, both teams have exactly the same number of wins, draws, losses, goals for and against).
União's top league scorers are Alisson, Crystopher and Juan Muñoz, allwith three goals. Crystopher is also the top assist giver this season, with three. The only players to have played in all 15 league matches so far are Habib Sylla, Marc Baró and Crystopher, Sylla leads all players with 1321 minutes.
For the women's side, despite the last match being at home, it didn't meant it would be an easy one: the goals against GD Ilha only appeared after half time, with Daniela Pereira scoring on the 69th minute only to Ilha to tie three minutes later, and the match was won by an own goal. With the first place on their group secured, União also guaranteed they will play on the 2025/26 Third Division, since four teams will be promoted from Division 2)
This season's stats for the women's squad (unfortunately stats on ZeroZero are still rare for full matches)
Most matches played: Luciana Garcia, Rita Gabriel and Vânia Campos, 14 matches
Most minutes played: Vânia Campos, 1260 minutes (2nd place: Luciana Garcia, 1259)
Top scorer: Carolina Ferreira, 12 goals (2nd place: Laura Rosa, 10 goals)

The wedding between King João I of Portugal and Queen Philippa of Lancaster
King João I was the son of a king and a bourgeois, so he had to raise his strain and arrange a marriage within the European royalty to consecrate him as a king, royalty, the high blood. And in fact he was given two sisters, Philippa and the younger sister, Catherine, who later married the king of Castile. Catherine was 16 years old and Philippa was ten more and he chose the oldest. They married for political reasons, to strengthen an alliance that already existed between Portugal and England, but then they became enchanted with each other. At the cultural level they had many similarities. King João I, having been master of Avis, was very cultured and came from the court of D. Pedro, who was also a very high man, and the court of Philippa, who was the granddaughter of King Edward III of England, was also a court. very high that sponsored the artists. There were writers, painters, thinkers there, and she got used to liking culture.
After Aljubarrota, the Portuguese King hurried to send the news to England, where ambassadors Fernando de Albuquerque and Lourenco Fugaça negotiated the alliance and enlisted mercenaries. A meeting was set up in Minho, near the Galician streak, beginning to talk about D. Philippa's wedding. She, her sister and her mother, stayed in Cela Nova, near Orense, while the Duke advanced until near Melgaço, near the bridge of the wall, where, on All Saints' Day, he met D. João. The splendid court of the English contrasted with the epic simplicity of the Portuguese in heavy duty quotas. Only the King wore silk loudel over his armor.
The conferences took place symbolically inside the tent of the king of Castile, taken in Aljubarrota. The marriage was pleased, moreover. The next day, the Duke offered a lavish banquet in his tents adorned with dazzling bowls and tapestries, a banquet which the King returned the following day, using the celebrated Castilian tent, enlarged with arborets of foliage. Later, having overcome the doubts that D. João had about the opportunity of marriage that could throw English greed over the Portuguese territory, the Archbishop of Braga and João Rodrigues de Sá went to get the bride from Cela Nova. There Philippa married by Proxy (a Portuguese costume), meaning João Rodrigues de Sá was representing the King, so after the “ceremony” both “groom” and “bride” lay in bed, all dressed, with a sword between them and stayed like that all night, representing the wedding night.
Philippa was 26 years old and he was little more than that. There were no major age differences as was typical in the Middle Ages. After the agreement was concluded, D. Philippa left the place where he was with his father, who was based in Galicia, and went straight to Porto, where he waited for D. João I and the wedding in the old medieval episcopal palace, next to the Porto Cathedral. She arrived in November 1386 and waited a long time. Why? With the signing of the Treaty of Ponte de Mouro, D. João promised that he would get Portuguese military to help John of Gaunt. Then, he and the Portuguese Constable, D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, walked through central and southern lands to find men for the Castile campaign. And, only around the end of December 1386, did D. João I first see D. Philippa. They also met in the episcopal palace of Porto on November 25, 1386.
When they met they exchanged presents: João offered her a rooster-shaped pin with a pearl and gems, while Philippa gave him a eagle shape gem jewel. After that meeting he left to Guimarães.
D. João I was a very interesting character and something curious happened: he was so engaged in the situation of the conquest of Castile that, to so many pages, had to remind him, when he was in Guimarães to captivate more military to please the future father-in-law, who either married in early February [1387] or could not marry because of the Seventieth, the so-called Lent. Because of Catholic law, they could only marry after "x" months and that would delay the campaign. He was in Guimarães so he ride all night from Guimarães to Porto on the eve of his marriage.
This was distance he ride with his horse to married Philippa. As they say nowadays: they married by the civilian right there [on February 2], to get things settled. And only on February 14, 1387 did the ceremonial take place.
On February 2nd 1387 King João I and Queen Philippa married by Braga Archbishop. It was a private ceremony with close friends. And after the ceremony the groom left right away to continue his campaign to find soldiers for the Castile campaign with his now father in law.
For the next weeks there were festivities and on February 14th (Valentine’s Day) João and Philippa had the religious ceremony.
In the morning, the King and Nuno Alvares went to the palace, there meeting with the bride. There was a splendid procession was organized there, brightened by an orchestra of trumpets and flutes. The streets were washed with flowers, smelling flowers, games and fair. The grooms, with their crowns of gold and precious stones, rode together two white horses covered with golden shawls. The richly attired archbishop of Braga carried the Queen's horse by the horse, behind which followed the numerous retinue of bridesmaids and noblewomen on foot. D. Nuno followed the King. At the door of the See, the bishop who was to marry them, D. Rodrigo, was waiting for them.
At the banquet of the wedding the very constable D. Nuno served as master of ceremonies. He was the one who organized the [wedding] party, the food and drink. During the banquet, they ate fish, meat and fruit. The drink of choice was wine. The day ended with a magnificent ball.
A the ball ended the bride and groom followed the Archbishop of Braga to their private chambers. There the Archbishop blessed the royal bed. Then he left, leaving King João I and Queen Philippa alone where the consummation happened, making the wedding official.

Juventus 1-1 Genoa: Cristiano Ronaldo reaches landmark 400 goals
Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score 400 goals in Europes top five leagues as Juventus dropped points for the first time this season.
Ronaldo’s fifth Serie A goal for Juve was added to his 84 Premier League strikes for Manchester United and 311 in La Liga for Real Madrid.
He tapped in after Joao Cancelo’s shot was blocked – having earlier hit the post with a header.
But Daniel Bessa equalised with a header from Christian Kouame’s cross.
Juventus defenders switched off for the goal, expecting the ball to drop for a corner – but Kouame kept it in and found an unmarked Bessa.
The hosts dominated most of the game, but of their 21 shots, only three were on target – all from Ronaldo, who had 11 efforts in total, in the first half.
Krzysztof Piatek’s run of scoring in every game for Genoa since his summer move from Cracovia came to an end. The 23-year-old Poland striker had scored 13 goals in his first eight games.
Ronaldo’s landmark puts him 10 goals above the second top scorer in Europe’s main leagues, Lionel Messi – who scored his 390th La Liga goal for Barcelona in their 4-2 win against Sevilla.
Champions Juve had won their opening eight Serie A games and two Champions League fixtures. They are four points above second-placed Napoli – who beat Udinese 3-0 later on Saturday.
On Tuesday, they visit Manchester United in the Champions League (20:00 BST).

Ronaldo scores as Juve keep 100% record with win over Udinese
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brilliant goal as Juventus maintained their 100% winning start by beating Udinese.
It comes during a week in which the Portugal forward “firmly” denied rape allegations.
Rodrigo Bentancur had headed in the opener for Serie A champions Juve, while Antonin Barak struck the foot of the post for the home side.
Udinese goalkeeper Simone Scuffet made a series of saves, the best of which was to keep out Joao Cancelo’s effort.
Relive Juventus’ victory over Udinese

World Cup 2018: Cristiano Ronaldo misses penalty but Portugal progress
Media playback is not supported on this device
Portugal progressed to the World Cup knockout stages after drawing with Iran in a game full of VAR controversy.
Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty for Portugal and was shown a yellow card after a lengthy VAR review for a possible red card.
Iran scored a late penalty, given after another video review, and could have snatched a winner in stoppage time which would have seen them through at Portugal’s expense.
Ricardo Quaresma put Portugal in front with a sensational goal at the end of the first half.
The late Iran penalty denied the European champions top spot in the group and means they play Uruguay in Sochi in the last 16 on Saturday, rather than Group A runners-up Russia.

World Cup 2018: Portugal 1-0 Morocco
Media playback is not supported on this device
Cristiano Ronaldo headed Portugal’s winner as Morocco became the first team to be knocked out of the World Cup.
Ronaldo’s fourth goal of the tournament, from Joao Moutinho’s cross, saw him become the leading European goalscorer in international football with 85 goals.
Morocco had several chances to equalise, Rui Patricio’s excellent one-handed save denying Younes Belhanda at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
Portugal move to the top of Group B.
They are one point above Iran, who play Spain at 19:00 BST on Wednesday.
Live reaction & analysis

Belhanda thought he had levelled after meeting a free-kick with his head, but Patricio, who has signed for Premier League newcomers Wolves, produced an instinctive stop.
Medhi Benatia wasted four chances, including a snatched shot in stoppage time, while Belhanda fired straight at Patricio before Morocco’s exit from the tournament was confirmed with one match still to play.
The North African nation, beaten 1-0 by Iran in their opening game, are playing at the World Cup for the first time in 20 years.

World Cup 2018: Cristiano Ronaldo scores hat-trick as Portugal and Spain draw 3-3
Media playback is not supported on this device
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a sensational late free-kick to round off his hat-trick and salvage a draw for Portugal against Spain in a captivating match.
The Portugal captain put his side ahead with an early penalty and restored their lead just before half-time.
Diego Costa twice equalised with well-taken goals, with Nacho’s majestic goal appearing to have won it for Spain.
But Ronaldo stepped up to fire into the top-right corner with two minutes remaining to secure the draw in Sochi.

Guedes scores twice as Portugal beat Algeria in friendly
Goncalo Guedes scored twice to boost his chances of starting at the World Cup as Portugal beat Algeria 3-0 in a friendly in Lisbon.
Cristiano Ronaldo had a goal ruled out for offside before Guedes, who spent last season on loan at Valencia from Paris St-Germain, scored from Bernardo Silva’s cushioned header.
Midfielder Bruno Fernandes headed home Ronaldo’s cross to double the lead.
Raphael Guerreiro’s cross was then headed in by 21-year-old winger Guedes.
European champions Portugal’s first match in Russia is against 2010 world champions Spain in Sochi on 15 June (19:00 BST).
Algeria, who reached the knockout stage in 2014, failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 2006.
