#Jinyu Cheng (RWBY)

First pass at a concept for one of my RWBY characters ^^! Her inspiration is a goldfish, and I wanted her to look like a mix of a martial artist and a high-society/refined lady because she’s a teacher. More under the cut about the outfit/process. 

Her name is Jinyu Cheng (she writes it last to first as 橙 金魚, so it would literally be read as Orange Goldfish when translated) and she’s a goldfish Faunus ^^ Because goldfish come from East Asia and are prevalent in Chinese mythology (carp jumping the waterfall) and culture, I decided to base her outfit off the traditional Hanfu. I ended up going with mostly Tang Dynasty era clothing, as the sheer jacket over and the slightly puffy sleeves were really appealing to me. 

Still, I had to refine her outfit. My first pass was a more Japanese-style outfit, with a tucked Kimono over a swimsuit. I was initially looking at Ai Miyashita from Love Live, and her Princess of Ryuujuugou UR because I love the scale pattern on the kimono (also she’s orange and my best girl aklfsjfl)

But because I wanted Jinyu to be based off Chinese fashion, I could easily just give her Japanese clothing I like and call it a day! So with the silhouette in mind I moved on to round two. 

A little closer, but still not perfect. Still, seeing something come together. 

The third pass was what I ended up coloring! I liked it so much right off the bat, and it incorporated the things I really wanted: Long flowing sleeves, the sheer top and sash over arms, swimsuit under, high boots, open shoulders. I say this is the first pass because I’m still thinking about the colors (I kinda wanna add more white cuz I have a white/orange goldfish in mind instead of just a plain orange one) and I need to figure out her emblem which will go in the big circle on the front panel of her skirt. Also I know I messed up the two sides of the shawl, the shorter one is the correct length! I’ll eventually get a full concept art out in the future haha But for now, I hope you enjoyed this little look into how I create character outfits ^^ Her hair is coming Eventually though LOL
