I love to imagine Jim Moriarty walking around London late Christmas Eve when everything is quiet and it’s snowing, he’s in his cashmere coat from the rooftop and snowflakes are collecting like stars in his black hair. He can see his own breath and hear his footsteps in the snow. There are lights in the windows above him and he feels untethered from the world.
He wonders about the reactions he’d get if he dropped in on the party at Baker Street. The amusement over terrifying Sherlock’s friends, they’d get so worked up for no reason, as if him being there meant his network was somehow more present than it would be without him there, but if they really want to believe the threat goes away when he’s out of sight, that’s their mistake. And a part of Jim is curious, what it would be like to surround himself with familiar faces. If company and eating and warmth would feel nicer than wandering in the cold. But of course his isolation isn’t physical and he knows that forcing himself where he doesn’t belong won’t change how separate he is. And he keeps walking in the silence.

The attacks slowed and Sherlock gasped for air despite the freezing water filling his mouth. Cold, pale hands gripped his coat and Sherlock flailed uselessly, staring up at Moriarty, not having to strain at all to hear his shouted words, “No. Don’t try to fight it. Lie back and lose!”
So Sherlock let go. He stopped struggling. He stopped fighting what he knew was true. He and Moriarty were the same. And in not dying on that unforgiving concrete all those years ago on that fateful day, he gave up the only chance he had to die with a worthy adversary.
“Your brain really is my equal.”
Moriarty smiled blissfully, it was unfortunate he never got to hear those words while still alive.
They went over the falls together.
It was almost like dying in Jim’s real arms. Moriarty held him just as tight, was smiling just as brilliantly into Sherlock’s neck. For these last few precious moments, free falling with water droplets that caught the moonlight and shone like crystals, Sherlock could pretend that it was really him.
