Jimin’s Production Diary Documentary
Things I learned or confirmed
When Jimin does new projects, I’m never quite sure what to expect because each of his products has been so diverse and creative. Based on every project so far, what I am sure of is that I’ll be delighted by whatever he creates and/or will learn something from it - usually both. I have enjoyed all of Jimin’s solo songs within the BTS catalog. I have also liked his solo creations outside of BTS. My appreciation and enjoyment were even more heightened with his impressive debut solo album, FACE. For me, it is a no skip album, which is rare for me. I already wrote my pre- and post-release thoughts about the album and its contents in other posts (See my FACE posts in my archive for more.), so I won’t go back into that information. This time I wanted to speak more about Jimin’s Production Diary documentary, which shows the making of the album.
I’m really glad they released the documentary for several reasons. For me, I learned a method of how songs can be made. I definitely didn’t know any process by which this was done, and I’ve always wanted BTS to show more of their development activities. However, with competition, I understand why they haven’t revealed details of these methods. In this documentary, I also got to know Jimin more and got to hear his laughter, which is always delightful for me. For others who may have doubts, the release of the documentary was to make sure there was recorded evidence that Jimin was involved in the process 100%. I feel that is one of the reasons that Jimin released photos of his handwritten, songwriting notes within the WeVerse version of his album. Another reason for the photos may have been that some of the lyrics he loved could not be used in the final recordings, but he wanted fans to know a fuller version of what his story and words were.
Jimin has previously said he is good at creating melodies, and this documentary verified that. In addition to this album, prior melodies have been attributed to Jimin both in his solo projects (i.e. Promise; Christmas Love) and in BTS content (i.e. Friends; Blood, Sweat, & Tears; Dis-ease). When they were recording Dis-ease, a producer heard Jimin humming something to a beat and asked him to work with that to write a bridge for the incomplete song. Jimin's bridge was included in the final recording. The same type of interaction could be seen in the documentary when Jimin was working with legendary producer PDogg as well as GhstLoop and Evan. Jimin was constantly pacing around and humming in the background. They’d overhear him, like what they heard, and record it right away into a phone or directly into the track then work from there. Many of the off-the-cuff creations were used in the final drafts.
Included in the BTS book Beyond The Story, Jimin recalled that during the (cringy) BTS reality show American Hustle Life, he was excited that a well known hiphop producer, with whom they were fortunate enough to be exposed at that time, had assigned Jimin to write a melody. He said it was the first time someone entrusted him to do that. It touched him so much that I have heard him repeat this story a few times, and he made sure to include it in the book. I wonder if that producer heard a pacing Jimin humming and thought what he heard was pretty good. Either way, at some point Jimin realized creating melodies was a strength of his. In fact, he called himself an “idea bank” while working with his team on the album (and videos). I’ve heard him previously joke about being the idea man while others would develop the ideas into action. These descriptions were confirmed in the documentary.
After all the hype about autotune being used on Jimin’s voice, the documentary should have proven to people that much of what was thought to be autotune was actually just Jimin’s voice. It’s not to say they didn’t use any at all for creative enhancements (as they do in 99% of songs these days), but in spite of even Jimin’s protestations sometimes, Jimin is a good vocalist. He just has that versatile of a voice that he is able to use more pitches, textures, and articulations (fry, squeak, creak) than most vocalists or more than most people would expect from singers. Despite the documentary showing them recording gibberish as words to capture the tune of the melody they wanted (not yet focusing on the final lyrics or singing effort), you could hear what ended up being the final sound of the songs taking shape.
I mention Jimin’s protestations about his voice because lately, Jimin has been asking fans to wait for him because he will become a good singer. I’m astonished by those comments because I actually think he is a great singer already. He is able to sound uniquely different, express emotion, and add flavor more than most singers I have heard. Can everyone add to and improve skills they are already good at? Of course. But it sounds as though he is implying that he is not a good singer yet - which could be a mistranslation of what he means. A listener can say they do not prefer his voice, but to say he is in any way a bad singer is just spitefully inaccurate.
Early on, as Jimin was learning his craft and using his untrained voice, there were vocal strains and occasional inconsistencies that likely made him concerned about the stability of his voice. (See my “Chameleon Park Jimin Series” in my archives for more.) Jimin was not trained properly (or at all) to be a singer and especially to be a stage singer (which is different in some ways) and with his higher pitch, lighter tone, and all the dancing and movement they do, he did an excellent job with stability but would have benefitted from instruction about how to use and preserve his voice most effectively and reliably. With as unique a voice as Jimin has, I do wonder if the company had anyone on hand that understood just how to train a voice such as his. Jimin, in large part, is a self-trained singer, which may have allowed him to tap into all these different sounds and skills that other vocalists don’t always do. (I am not excusing or rewarding the lack of training because he also could have damaged his vocal chords, thus destroying his rare vocal gift.) Anyway, he says he is working on strengthening and (re)learning some skills from the ground up, which could only help to enhance an already stellar ability.
Along with debunking the autotune nonsense, the documentary also confirmed a few other things that I already knew. One is that Jimin thrives from interactions with people. He really enjoyed that process of collaboration with his production team. I hope he continues to surround himself with skilled and supportive people, such as what he seemed to have in the “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band”, which is what the team of 4 named themselves. I don’t recall the reason for the name, but it demonstrates the fun and camaraderie the group had while working together. Jimin was also shown reaching out to RM for advice about lyrics and to JK to sing background vocals on a special song. He has mentioned having conversations with JHope that sounded like encouragement throughout the process. Jimin is a people person, and he is getting better at reaching out for help and support, something he has said in the past he has had trouble doing. I hope he is able to continue to identify good, reliable, trustworthy people with whom he can work comfortably and create more enjoyable work.
Another confirmation was that Jimin was celebrated for the Hot100 #1 chart achievement with not one, but two cakes! (See my “As Information Unfolds” post in my archives for more.) I’m glad that he and the team were recognized at least within the company for the accomplishment. In spite of the fact that I feel someone dropped the ball on not revealing the acknowledgement earlier, I wasn’t one who was hugely disturbed by the lack of cake, especially knowing that Jimin doesn’t really love sweets and cakes and that he unfortunately still has weight/dieting issues and worked to lose too much weight before the promotional performances. The documentary showed him go from what looked like a healthy weight while working on the album to an extremely thin weight by the time the Hot100 news came out, when he was in the midst of promotional activities. I looked up the healthy weight for someone of his height, and the goal he was trying to maintain during promotions is far below what is listed. (He mentioned weight, dieting, & food several times this year from Vibe to FACE, but this comment was specifically in a behind the scenes video for Set Me Free, Part 2.)
Finally, the documentary confirms that Jimin is growing and developing in a lot of areas, while remaining sweetly and comfortably the same Jimin we came to love and enjoy. I really was pleased to see him being encouraged by the acceptance and use of his contributions. The team helped Jimin pull together his thoughts, story, and concepts, and they were all pleased with the results. (Prior to the release of FACE, PDogg posted a photo of a statement they hung on the wall that said that Jimin was going to end KPop with the release of this album. That is quite a statement from an experienced producer such as PDogg, even if it was only meant as a statement of encouragement and confidence in the artist.) Even Jimin, who can be rather hard on himself, seemed happy with what he created. I feel this experience was something he has needed in order to shine with the confidence he should always carry. He needed that type of environment and support to help him to feel free to express and expose all the creativity I have always felt he had, and I believe there is far more than we’ve seen so far. I feel Jimin has been reminded of that passion he has known within himself, and he seems excited to share more of his efforts.
While Jimin was very disappointed about the pandemic and all that resulted from the quarantine time, I hope he is able to look back and appreciate events that happened in the midst of that time, which might not have come to pass without that situation. That moment may have helped him get to a road he needed to be on that he had only imagined up to that point. I’m glad he got to experience the production of and success of his album before he has to pause to complete his military service. I hope he can carry the memories and energy generated from this experience to motivate him throughout the time he is serving. I also hope he learned from the quarantine experience that good things can sometimes come from events that seem off track. FACE was an excellent start to Jimin’s solo career, and I look forward to seeing what else he will produce in the future.
Note: I have not yet seen the accompanying full Live or Commentary videos, which may add to my thoughts and fill in more gaps. (UPDATE: To PDogg's claim, Jimin became the first Korean soloist to have album to make the Billboard 200 end of year list [#193]).

I have thoughts about the Watch with Jimin livestream...
How do i love thee? Let me count the ways...
I did in fact do some counting. I counted Jimin's blink rate during the almost two minutes he watched JK recording the back-up vocals for Letter to Army. And yes, it was a labour of love, especially since I don't enjoy numbers... they're tricksy squirmy little gremlins that do sneaky things like divide themslves in two, or become imaginary.
But for the sake of science and Jikookery, I counted how many times - and when - Jimin blinked during this sequence.
Overall, nothing unusual to report. The average number of times a person blinks in a minute is approximately 15. In the 1m55s of video I captured, Jimin blinked 33 times. Unremarkable.
Except...
The pattern of how much he blinked changed markedly depending on who was on screen.
When Jmin was watching himself, he blinked far more than when he was watching JK. Frequent blinking can be a sign of stress, and there were a number of other clues too, that Jimin wasn't all that comfortable watching himself: giggling, hiding his face, selfconsciously flicking his hair, playing with his hands etc etc.
When JK was on screen Jimin sat still, his gaze fixed on JK. Often his mouth fell open just a little, his lips parted as though he was entranced. In fact, during the first 20 seconds of the footage when he's leaning forward staring intently at JK, he only blinks 4 times.
And that's a clue to another factor at play here...
There's a phenomenon in the psychology of attraction called a COPULATORY GAZE. When someone stares intently at a person they find attractive, that's what it's called.
It's a COPULATORY GAZE.
So it's not just a minor fascination he has going on, or a bit of focused admiration.
Translated to the coloquial, I guess you could call it EYE FUCKING.
Yes, eye fucking is a scientific phenomenon.
But wait, there's more...
Towards the end of this segment of Watch With Jimin, when JK is done recording and he and Jimin are on screen together, something happens to our dear Jiminie on the livestream.
It involves a bit of eye fucking and lip licking (licking, tongue movement, swallowing, all necessary to deal with the saliva that accumulates in your mouth when you're aroused.) Yes, it seems our boy has a visceral response watching the doco, particularly when JK plays around with him on screen.
JK says he's going to feature in Jimin's concert, and he then moves towards Jimin and says (you can't make this stuff up istg) "I will do this behind you." Right, he's just talking about singing the back up vocals.
Jimin is absolutely transfixed though. He swallows with some difficulty. His chest is visibly rising and falling. He's breathing hard and I'm sure that's not all.
Now realistically we've seen them flirt and tease each other so many times that what they're doing in that studio isn't even worth mentioning. And we know Jimin pushes JK's buttons on screen far more than this, apparently just for fun. So why is this little te-ta-te getting Jimin all hot and bothered (because there's no question, that is what's happening).
There's only one thing i can think of.
It's because he's watching it on screen.
I cannot think of ANY other reason that this lukewarm bit of playfulness would make him literally breathless.
And ya know, because i'm a dirty boy with a wild imagination, this leads me to think of all those times they've flirted onscreen...
Does Jimin go home and watch Bangtan TV clips and get all shook up?
Is he bookmarking all the YT complilations of him and JK doing questionable things, and using them for his own nefarious purposes?
I don't even want to think about the footage that gets deleted, the stuff that's too risque to put in a Bangtan Bomb. I picture Jimin scooping it up off the cutting room floor and stuffing down his shirt to smuggle home.
And what about all the on-stage shenanigans at concerts? Kitty Gang Jimin comes to mind immediately.
Does he search for fancams - from LY Hong Kong maybe - and use them to cam his fan in the privacy of his bedroom?
Ok, I've reached that invisble line.... I'm going to stop RIGHT HERE.
You can decide for yourselves whether our mochi has a lil bit of an exhibitionist streak - whether the thought of doing questionable things in public with his buff boytoy revs his engine.
I'll leave you with this nugget of barely suppressed lust, and I'm not just talking about the goings-on on stage. The whole vibe of this concert is feral. I am forever sorry to have missed this one...
(The two women in the bottom right corner are amost as entertaining as the boys imo... pretty sure one of them drops their army bomb haha...)

Late to the party having only just watched it, but I just want to talk about how adorable Jimin is in the BTS documentary when JK comes over to cook with him/for him. His face so flustered and how he is so smiley and happy, the way he runs to the door to get the chicken, it’s the most precious thing I’ve seen in a while. His duality is insane to me.
***
I delayed replying to you for weeks thinking that if I just gave myself time, I'd be able to write about Jimin. But I can't. He gets me too messed up.
Anyway, I'm posting this to say, yeah I agree. I want to say how exactly his duality, cuteness, magnanimity, him jikooking with Jungkook, his smile, his dimples, his eyes, his cute strong feet and little pinky toe he balances on to get things from the fridge, his hair, his hands, the way he jerks when he laughs, the way he talks about his friends getting him to open up when he was depressed, the way he moans after tasting Jungkook's cooking, the way he folds his laundry, the way he smirks, the way he talks, the way he breathes...
...the way Jimin exists, to quote you, is the most precious thing I've seen in a while.
And thanks for actually watching the documentary even if you got to it later. Half of what counts for discourse in these spaces would disappear if more people actually listened to the people they claim to stan, rather than run with their own imaginations for what they think the guys are thinking.

Looool Jimins says you didn’t come visit me in my room last night to JK and the caption is restless eyes, and he really does at that moment 👀 his eyes dart around in such a funny way 👀👀
Flustered and restless eyes.
The editors do be driving us crazy sometimes. They expose them so much no wonder some people wonder if Jikook is real 😂😂
No, but seriously why does Jimin do this sometimes? I'd give anything to see JK's face here. Poor guy 😂😂 Jimin exposing satellite Jeon 🤭🤭

Jimin's Production Diary Main Trailer
youtube
So, we got to see NJ in the trailer, JK as well. Debate if Suga was there too.
Watching the trailer I feel this documentary is going to be a bit of an emotional rollercoaster.
But, with saying that, I still feel that JM will have his guard up and we won't be allowed to see too much.
We got to see what probably will be the 2 seconds allowance of JK and Jikook in the trailer itself (don't mind me, feeling a little bitter this morning, not to mention, I can't help think about ITS2 trailers...).
Anyways...
JK recording his vocals for Letter.
But you know what?
Even if this is all we are getting, 2 seconds flat of Jikook crumbs, oh so much was revealed in those 2 seconds.
That piece of paper shaking, in JK's strong stable hands alone tells us how emotional this was for him.
That hug. Well, just look at JK's hand movement.
One hand to the waist, second moving to JM's hip, perhaps in the direction of that body part JK loves oh so much, and then, once again, JK like a dear in the spotlight looking straight into the camera.
But then, once again, who knows? Maybe that hand did find it's way to that ass? Perhaps that's why the scene was so very rudely cut!
Also
This is the same day.
If you had any doubt about JK's hand stability. This is him, same day, holding the Dreamers lyrics with one hand. When hand not moving, paper still. Paper moving with body and hand voluntary movement. Other than that, stable as hell.
And then you have Letter recording. Holding the paper, hand stabilized by his other arm, and still shaky.
So, I guess those claims JM wasn't around with/for JK when he was recording Dreamers were, as per usual, full of crap.
Anyway, gonna leave you with this. Because I need more of it.
So, today is JM's birthday. This was released on the 13th 00:00 KST on the dot. I know we will be getting a live form JM once the documentary drops, but I do still hold on to some hope that we will get some JM today as well.
Here's dreaming...

Don't let the sugarcoating and empty praises fool ya'll from the cold hard truth that Jimin was DENIED a lot of the basic training as an Idol trainee, like vocal lessons, to the point where he was only allowed to observe the others during their own lessons and then would practice BY HIMSELF.
The fact that they gaslighted him for a whole year to believe he wasn't good enough and had already spoken to his dad about looking elsewhere to make it big on his own.
Yet here you have the vocal coach and the other lady "feeling sorry" for him 10 YEARS LATER and reducing it all to "oh he was too harsh on himself".
I mean yeah, tell a fish it needs to climb a tree instead of swimming and it'll think its stupid its whole life.
And its clear as crystal now and admitted by FATPD himself that Jimin was simply never his favorite. 'Cause bestie what do you mean a trainee like Jimin who came in with EXPERIENCE in dancing different styles, who mastered "popping" since age 8, who defeated Expert Dance Teachers in DANCE BATTLES at age 13-14 (and there is video evidence of this everywhere on the internet just do your fucking research).
Jimin was the only one out of the 7 who had the actual dream & determination of becoming an Idol.
But sure, lets praise others and consider them "perfect" candidates for having the bare minimum like "oh but atleast he's handsome" lol miss me with that bullshit, sir.

My Ramblings about Jikook in Jimin’s Documentary Live
So I’m doing it, I’m making a post about it. This will probably be chaotic and poorly organized like all my posts, but here we go.
When Jimin first yelled JK! I was so confused because his bf wasn’t on screen yet. It took me until I faintly heard Jungkook’s voice in the background to realize that he was there. 🥹
One of the first things I noticed too was Jimin’s super cute giggles. I can’t help but wonder if Jungkook was doing something behind the cameras to make Jimin laugh super hard. My guess is yes but either way it was sweet.
The next thing that I noticed that I haven’t seen talked about was Jimin saying something about it feeling like he’s at home watching but there are people in front (I’m assuming camera crew) which could just be a nuanced translation but why now? Jimin you’ve been on air for at least thirty minutes now but suddenly it feels like home? Maybe because a certain cutie boyfriend arrived on set. 🤭🫠 would love to know if there are additional meanings for that translation because it seems out of place.
When Jungkook actually comes up to Jimin’s chest to talk into the mic because Jimin told him to. No boundaries, no second guessing. He can get that close because he does, often. I loved the other bloggers who have already pointed out the similarities between the clearness that we could hear Jimin on the mic when Jungkook woke him up to eat during ITS2. Proves how close he had to be to Jimin for Jimin’s voice to pick it up so clearly in the mic. Also proves why we didn’t see it if they were that close. My guess too is that no film crew was in the room with them. I’m sure they have some autonomy when filming that Jungkook said he was going to wake Jimin up alone. He was still mic’d up though hence us hearing their convo. I personally don’t think they would be cuddled up together with a film crew in the room, I digress.
The next part of the convo is interesting. I wonder if Jungkook had planned to be there. Like maybe they had a chair set out for him and maybe Jimin didn’t know that his bf was going to come get his front row seat and watch. Maybe Jimin was truly surprised to spot Jungkook.
Of course I had butterflies and giggled over Jimin feeling up Jungkook’s chest and getting a little squeeze in. A squeeze that Jungkook definitely leaned in for. Jimin reached his arm out, and Jungkook instinctively knew that Jimin was going to touch him so he leaned in and let him. But then the poor bunny got flustered and forgot to answer Jimin’s question or what to do next.
The next few moments are super awkward and giggly and cute. The camera cuts all visibility on both of them from the waist down but we see Jimin tap JK on the booty. He’s not slick 👀 then he tells Jungkook that he can go home and rest and insists he takes the chair with him 🤣
Jungkook leaves with gusto telling Jimin he will watch his documentary (I think the translation says on the way) but I’m assuming that means on his way home probably.
The last interesting thing is Jungkook widening those doe eyes at the camera, looking at it dead on and saying goodbye. I love you. I’m so conflicted because I really really want to believe that I love you was for Jimin. Jimin was already seated at that moment, recovering from the flirty commotion. The way that Jungkook was so adamant about that I love you makes me feel like it wasn’t for me or Army, but again, I try not to have confirmation bias. I hope this is not one of those times. Jimin waves to him cutely. His eyes following Jungkook out the room and then concludes that it was nice. 🥹 Be still my heart.
It was nice. Very nice to see them together. Very nice to shut down all the haters and insecure people out there. Nothing has changed between them. No one can deny their closeness after that. And for those that need to cling to their gestures and mannerisms not indicating an intimacy that extends beyond a platonic friendship, good luck with that. Whatever helps you sleep at night. Just leave us alone. Your homophobic rants and petty rumors aren’t welcome here. ✌🏻

It's so funny how RM advised them for the lyrics BPP!!
The way Jimin couldn't stop laughing!!
I miss my minimoni! I miss them!
***
Everything about that moment including Jimin's delivery was pure comedic timing genius.
*
Just as it was with the BTS book earlier this summer, I sincerely hope everyone watches the documentary. Especially the people who call themselves his fans. I suspect it will be very educational for those who aren't completely sucked in yet.
