A team of researchers from Jilin University, NYU Abu Dhabi's Smart Materials Lab, and the Center for Smart Engineering Materials, led by Professor of Chemistry Pance Naumov, has developed a new crystalline material that can harvest water from fog without any energy input. The design of the novel type of smart crystals, which the researchers named Janus crystals, is inspired by desert plants and animals, which can survive in arid conditions. Desert beetles and lizards, for example, have evolved to develop surface structures that have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic areas and effectively capture moisture from the air. Water is attracted to the hydrophilic areas and droplets are accumulated and transported through the hydrophobic areas.

Inheritance by Beili Liu
Pearl cotton crochet, black pine tar, thread, needles, hardware, dimensions variable. 2019-2024.
Beili Liu explains:
"In 2018, I received a remarkable gift from artist Diane Sandlin, a large collection of crochet pieces created by her grandmother, Rosa Elliott Freeman (1884-1977). I was taken by the beauty and weight of these objects and the countless hours of making and providing embedded in them. With Diane’s permission, I dipped this large crochet bedspread in black pine tar, suspended it in the center of the room, and draped from it hundreds of sewing needles.
Inheritance intends to make women’s labor visible, and present. I am deeply interested in a material’s inherent ability to record the passage of time through anonymous, accumulated labor. This time, this labor was honored with the name of the maker and celebrated through a collaboration across space and time."
Born in Jilin, China, Beili Liu now lives and works in Austin, Texas. Liu received her MFA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and is a Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Professor of Art at the University of Texas at Austin.

A Chinese man has been sentenced to death for fatally stabbing a 10-year-old Japanese schoolboy, in a case that sparked concern among Japanese expats living in China.
The sentence for the knife attack in the southern city of Shenzhen in September was handed down on Friday, according to Japanese media reports.
It comes a day after another court handed a death sentence to a Chinese man who attacked a Japanese mother and child and killed a Chinese woman who tried to protect them in Suzhou province in June.
The courts' decisions come as Chinese authorities carried out several high-profile executions in recent days.
The stabbings in Shenzhen and Suzhou were among three attacks on foreigners in China last year. Just days before the Suzhou incident, four US college instructors were hurt in a knife attack at a public park in Jilin in the country's north.
After the attack in Shenzhen, Japanese companies, including Toshiba and Toyota, told their staff to take precautions against any possible violence, while Panasonic offered its employees free flights home.
In the Suzhou case, a Chinese court said that Zhou Jiasheng, 52, had carried out the attack outside a Japanese school after he lost the will to live, following the loss of his job and subsequent debts.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters at a press conference that the court ruled that the attack was an "intentional murder" and the penalty was given due to the "significant social impact" the crime had caused.
However, the court made no mention of Japan during the ruling, according to Hayashi, who added that officials from the Japanese consulate in Shanghai had attended the sentencing.
Hayashi added that the crime, which killed and injured "innocent people", including a child, was "absolutely unforgivable".
He also paid tribute to Hu Youping, the Chinese bus attendant who was killed by Zhou while trying to protect a Japanese mother and her child.
Earlier on Thursday, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, briefly commented in a daily press conference that the case was "in judicial process", adding that China would "as always, act to protect the safety of foreign nationals in China."
China has been grappling with an uptick in public violence, with many attackers believed to have been spurred by a desire to "take revenge on society" - where perpetrators act on personal grievances by attacking strangers.
There were 19 attacks on pedestrians or strangers last year, a sharp increase from single digits in previous years.
On Monday, a man who killed at least 35 people in a car attack that is thought the be the country's deadliest attack in a decade was executed.
Last month, a man who killed eight people in a stabbing spree at his university was sentenced to death.
Additionally, in December, a man who injured 30 people by driving into a crowd of children and parents outside a primary school was handed a suspended death sentence.

Scar Over?
The Chinese liver fluke is a flatworm found in freshwater environments. Around 15 million people in East Asia are currently infected by this parasite, often due to eating undercooked fish. Setting up camp in the bile ducts, the flatworm feeds on bile and causes liver scarring and cancer – although we don't understand exactly how. Here in cross-section we see two parasitic worms (white) surrounded by the scarred bile duct tissue (purple) of a mouse. Scientists developed genetically modified mice that capture the features of human disease when infected by the flatworm. Using these mice, they discovered that the Chinese liver fluke releases molecules that activate the immune system and cause inflammation. This rallies cells called myofibroblasts to the infection site, where they trigger scarring. This new understanding could help researchers develop more effective treatments for Chinese liver fluke infections and even ways to prevent the long-term damage they cause.

Researchers discover graphene flakes in lunar soil sample
A study, published in National Science Review, reveals the existence of naturally formed few-layer graphene, a substance consisting of carbon atoms in a special, thin-layered structure. The team, led by professors Meng Zou, Wei Zhang and senior engineer Xiujuan Li from Jilin University and Wencai Ren from the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Metal Research, analyzed an olive-shaped sample of lunar soil, about 2.9 millimeters by 1.6 mm, retrieved from the Chang'e 5 mission in 2020. According to the team, scientists generally believe that some 1.9% of interstellar carbon exists in the form of graphene, with its shape and structure determined by the process of its formation. Using a special spectrometer, researchers found an iron compound that is closely related to the formation of graphene in a carbon-rich section of the sample. They then used advanced microscopic and mapping technologies to confirm that the carbon content in the sample comprised "flakes" that have two to seven layers of graphene.
