Bodkin (season 1?) — some thoughts
Bodkin (season 1?) — some thoughts
Billed as a dark comedy / crime series, it’s fair to say most of the jokes seem to have been left to one side as Bodkin paints a grim and ofttimes unpleasant picture of the secrets hidden in the West Cork town of Bodkin. Unusually, it runs over seven episodes, and I found it easier to watch over a couple of weeks rather than binge? What’s Bodkin about? There’s a handy sneak peek piece on the…

Bodkin: It's Not Shakespeare But is it Bare?
Image courtesy of Netflix Bodkin is not Shakespeare by any stretch of the imagination, but is it bare? A silly play on words here, but can anyone who played a role by the Baird not? And is series creator Jez Scharf actually having a laugh with the setting? Hamlet this isn’t but the dramedy/thriller may be sharper than you think. synopsis American true crime podcaster Gilbert (Will Forte) and…

[3 stars]
I don’t know even where to begin with this one. It is neither pure comedy nor pure mystery. It is definitely dark, but it also has absurdist humor. Suffice to say that it’s a ride. A bit violent, but almost tongue-in-cheek if you follow true-crime podcasts. For a first series, creator Jez Scharf definitely delivered something that felt fresh.
Will Forte (Extra Ordinary) is at the center of this all. But though he may be the headliner, from a marketing point of view, he’s really no more than an excuse for the rest of the story. Which isn’t to say that he doesn’t deliver well, but it isn’t anything new for him.
It is, in fact, Siobhán Cullen (The Limehouse Golem) and Robyn Cara that ultimately steal the plot and run with it. There is, as with all UK mysteries, a huge ensemble of incredible talent. David Wilmot (Station Eleven), in particular, gets a lot to run with. But the town of Bodkin is filled to the rafters with characters.
Ready for a dark, bitter-sweet mystery that has tons of twists, but is ultimately, entirely fair? Give this a shot. I couldn’t binge it, but I enjoyed watching it over several nights.

[ad_1] It was solely a matter of time earlier than somebody bought spherical to taking over the true-crime podcast phenomenon that’s seen journalists rake over grisly murders, violent kidnappings and horrifying intercourse abuse instances. Enter author Jez Scharf and the Irish-set Bodkina scrumptious fish-out-of-water seven-part Netflix collection that balances real detective thrills with laid-back laughs. Suppose Father Ted meets Twin Peaks – with much more eels. American star Will Forte (a Saturday Evening Reside alumnus, whose film work contains Nebraska and MacGruber) performs Gilbert Energy, an American podcaster over in Eire looking for out his Irish roots. Arriving within the fictional city of Bodkin, he’s joined by Emmy (Robyn Cara), an enthusiastic researcher, out within the discipline for the primary time. After which there’s Dove (Siobhán Cullen), the cynical investigative reporter despatched again to West Cork by her editor to put low after a scandal and assist out Gilbert. The plan is to analysis into the disappearance of three children from years earlier – together with the brother of native bigwig Seamus (David Wilmot). However quickly Dove is digging into what’s actually occurring Bodkin, a city the place criminality lurks simply beneath the floor. Wearing a protracted black coat and sun shades, wanting a bit like Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity from The Matrixher hard-bitten credentials will all the time lead her to search for the story behind the story. ‘Bodkin’ takes place within the titular Irish small city the place some murders have occurred. CREDIT: Netflix Certain sufficient, the locals begin taking umbrage with Dove and co. poking their noses into their enterprise. “Let the previous go – it’s performed nothing to you,” says one, whereas Dove is quickly accosted by two balaclava-wearing assailants as they try to scare her off the crushed monitor. All of a sudden, vehicles are set on fireplace and a rustic that’s “by no means even had a serial killer” begins to look as suspect as Donald Trump’s end-of-year accounts. With out going too bizarre, Scharf does conjure up an amusing image of rural Eire, the place locals play weird video games (bowling a steel ball down the nation roads) or drive a tractor with disco lights and a speaker blaring out Amii Stewart’s ‘Knock on Wooden’. There’s additionally loads of spooky goings-on, just like the wolf that seems nearly all over the place that Dove goes, as a thriller murkier than an Irish lavatory unfurls. Whereas the humour is basically low-key, Forte amuses because the Yankee exploring the Emerald Isle, particularly when he places on his earnest ‘podcast presenter’ voice. Nevertheless it takes two (or three) to tango, and Cara and Cullen carry simply as a lot to the desk. Particularly, Cullen is neatly forged because the ballsy hack who thinks nothing of snooping round residents’ homes or telling a baby to “fuck off” after they insult her new sun shades. Away from the principle trio, The Younger Offenders’ Chris Walley pops up as Seán, who turns into the principle gang’s driver when he isn’t disappearing for hours on finish. However steadily you’ll come to like all of the characters on this quirky ensemble. It’s a slow-burner, filling your glass steadily like pint of Guinness. However sup down one episode and also you’ll be racing by the remainder, determined to crack open Bodkin’s a number of mysteries. ‘Bodkin’ streams on Netflix from Could 9 !function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s) if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function()n.callMethod? n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments); if(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n;n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version='2.0'; n.queue=();t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0; t.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)(0); s.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)(window, document,'script', ' fbq('consent', 'revoke'); fbq('init', '370979561341328'); fbq('track', 'PageView'); [ad_2] https://topstoryusa.com/entertainment/netflix-series-is-father-ted-meets-twin-peaks-tsu/?feed_id=814&_unique_id=663e86f14aeda
