Dante laid the bases of Italian as a language (I don't remember how many of the words we use in contemporary Italian were used/invented by him) as well as Petrarca and Boccaccio did ( our 3 crowns ❤️❤️❤️). But then Bembo had to intervene and decided to use only Petrarca and Boccaccio to standardize a language that could be used by all the scholars of his and of future times. He left Dante out because his language was to broad to be replicate by those who would learn it as a second language basically. But Bembo remember, you would be nowhere without Dante!
