Purpose: to be a guide and a role model for Paul.

Purpose: one of Paul's combat trainer along with Duncan.

Characteristics: smart, quiet, fearful, desperate.

Purpose: betrays the Atreides in an attempt to save his wife from the Harkonnen's

Characteristics: strong, brave, sceptical.

Purpose: future love interest of Paul, for now just friend.

Stillgar:

Characteristics: wise, faithful, loyal, even tempered.

Purpose: leader of the group of Fremen that Paul and Jessica join.

Baron Harkonnen:

Characteristics: evil, power hungry, blood thirsty, sly.

Purpose: to try and gain control of Arrakis and Spice mining and eradicate the Fremen and Atreides.

Rabon Harkonnen:

Characteristics: blood thirsty, loyal.

Purpose: second in command to Baron.

Thufir Hawat:

Characteristics: kind, loyal, true.

Purpose: general for Atreides battalion.

Shadout Mapes:

Characteristics: honorable, faithful, hopeful, loyal.

Purpose: House maid for Jessica, believer in prophecy, saves Jessica’s life.

Leit Kynes (Empirial Liason):

Characteristics: trustworthy, loyal, caring

Purpose: guides Paul, Jessica, and Duncan through Fermen territory.

As a “young lady” who also has a doctorate degree and looks even younger than my age, words matter. This isn’t a matter of “demanding respect” but rather the inconsistencies young women with doctoral degrees face compared to their older or male counterparts. I didn’t think much of it until an interaction early on in my postdoc experience where a nurse called me Ms. Rabon (and later Jessica) in a written communication with a patient and a [male] colleague of mine pointed out how he, nor any other male nor older female doctor would ever be called Mr. or Ms., or by their first name, in communication with a patient. At first I assumed it was an isolated event, until it became apparent that there are definitely inconsistencies, both with colleagues in a professional setting and with parents (I get called Jessica all the time by parents of my patients despite introducing myself as Dr. Rabon, or get a confused look on their face when I introduce myself as a doctor), between how young women are addressed compared to male or older counterparts.

Us “young ladies” have worked just as hard as all other persons who have obtained doctoral degrees. Dr. Bouman should not only be recognized for her recent accomplishment, but also her educational accomplishments.

Professionally I use both my maiden and married names, so I go by Jessica Kelliher Rabon, rather than just Jessica Rabon. I did so because I already had papers and presentations under my maiden name, so I wanted to keep it somewhat consistent.
