When Reality Mimics Art

“Wow, you guys fight just like brothers. You’re almost as bad as us,” says Dean, in The Chitters. 

When the CW released press photos for 11.19, a lot of us looked at them and went (to paraphrase) “omg gay.” (I’m not the only one by far but that’s the easiest link I’ve got to hand–and the tags are full of people agreeing.) I mean, look at them again: 

This is the sort of subtext we live for: shared looks, smiles, touches–body language. 

So when a media news** article was posted with the headline: 

‘Supernatural’ Episode 11.19 Photos: Another Pair of Hunter Brothers

People started second guessing the speculation. I think some of the tags on the original round of reblogs even say, “too bad they’re brothers” or something similar. 

So we did our research–this specific BuddyTV article was ground zero for a few articles that used the word brothers about Jesse and Cesar. The ONLY thing that @justanotheridijiton​ and I could find in any official promotional material that hinted at fraternal ties was the CW Press Photos information itself, which listed the two characters as:

**I use the word “new” very loosely. And, since the episode aired, has been changed to read “Another Pair of Hunters” but since Google caches everything: 

Now, this is yet another reminder of why media journalism is a giant game of telephone and you should not necessarily trust anything you read–sources are important y’all! But okay, this is just a big rehashing of things that’ve already been pointed out. Bear with me. 

[Tangent: when we were looking up the actors, we might have made note of the fact that Hugo Ateo had been on The L Word, and Lee Rumohr had been on Queer as Folk as well as this movie. We don’t particularly consider past parts to be indicative of the story a completely unrelated character would have, because there’s no correlation there. But we definitely noted it. For science.] 

So, we have two characters–who, I might add, don’t look terribly like they’re related–being proclaimed as brothers based purely on the facts (from what I can see) that they’re both men and they have the same last name. In other words, an extra-textual version of compulsory heterosexuality. 

If this sounds familiar, it’s because you probably read @deathbycoldopen‘s post about how that’s one of the themes of the episode. 

To reiterate this in another way: a lot of the people hunters run into on the show are skeptical about the existence of the supernatural. Sometimes even when they’ve experienced it first-hand even. 

So much of the time it’s easier to cling to your beliefs or what you’ve been told or even just the little biases that you’ve internalize; 

Monsters aren’t real. 

You’re just imagining things. 

Men doing a good job of performing masculinity don’t love other men like that. 

Y’know, like an old married couple.

Dean Winchester + Jesse Cuevas

So I’ve been a little obsessed with Jesse’s character lately even though he’s in literally one single episode of the show, and kinda want to write something where he and Dean meet when they’re younger (like Stanford era or earlier) and grow close. And it would sort of be an exploration of the importance of queer friendships and how they can exist in a space between/outside romantic and platonic.

Anyway, would anyone be interested in reading that as a fic or maybe a comic? Tbh I will probably write it anyway, but I’m curious if it would be of interest to anyone else lol
