Science Saturday
A few #Feathursdays ago, we presented the Aves page spread from the 6th edition of Systema Naturæ by Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778), published in Stockholm by Gottfried Kiesewetter in 1748. Today we bring you all eight copperplate engravings found in this edition, covering quadrupeds, birds, mollusks, fish, reptiles, insects and spiders, plants, and minerals. This work, first published in Leiden in 1735, introduced Linnaeus’s consequential system of taxonomic classification. Twelve editions of Systema Naturæ would be published in Linnaeus’s lifetime, with the 10th edition, published in Stockholm in 1758-59, recognized as the beginning of modern zoological nomenclature. Our 6th edition was the first to include birds, listing 260 species arranged into 51 genera and six orders. A posthumous 13th edition, expanded by German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin and published in Leipzig 1788-93, would be the last to appear before the end of the 18th century.
Our copy of Systema Naturæ is another donation from our friend Jerry Buff.
