It was one of those days; you know the ones - where the only remedy is to watch Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins fight a bear. Luckily Lee Tamahori, David Mamet and Bart the Bear anticipated this need way back in 1997 and made The Edge. In this entertaining wilderness action nonsense a diffident billionaire, Morse (Anthony Hopkins), and a bullish fashion photographer, Bob (Alec Baldwin), are stranded in the Alaskan wilds and have to survive against the odds, said odds including a relentless ursine attacker and their own simmering enmity over Morse’s wife, Mickey (Elle Macpherson). They’ll need each other to survive, but what happens when they no longer need each other? Butch shenanigans in excelsis are in the offing, for sure.

Apparently, The Edge reunited Bart the Bear and Anthony Hopkins, the two having previously worked together on Legends of the Fall (1994); a movie I have never felt the need to watch. But then again I didn’t know Bart the bear was in it. Bart is very much a star in The Edge, easily the equal of the two headliners and he gets a big onscreen shout out at the end, which unfortunately undermines Anthony Hopkins’ portentous final line. I think David Mamet wants us to roll the multi-layered implications of this ambiguous line around our minds like a boiled sweet in a child’s gob, instead you end up going “Bart! The bear was called Bart! Cool. He was good. Man, that bear rocked. Go Bart!”

But the loss of pathos to bathos at the finale is no great loss, as Mamet’s script isn’t one of his stronger ones. It’s very much an “entertainment” as Graham Greene might have had it. It’s not as provocative as Oleanna (1994), but then Oleanna doesn’t have a bear in it, so there you go. Damn, now I really want to watch a production of Oleanna with a bear in it.

JOHN: Agh! My legs! My legs! Oh my God!

Nor is The Edge an excoriating portrait of the dog eat dog world of capitalism involving U2’s guitarist selling dodgy real estate. No, the Pulitzer judges can have a lie in; The Edge is just a Boy’s Own adventure, with an extra layer of Mamet’s signature comically excessive manliness. The Edge is so manly there isn’t even a part for Rebecca Pidgeon. However, it’s not all metaphorical whiskey chugging and snapping of towels at each other’s arses in the shower; there’s a woman in glasses who has about two lines and, in a bold casting stroke, the pretty model Elle Macpherson plays a pretty model. Which she is very good at, fair play to Elle Macpherson.

As roles go Macpherson’s is really no more than a fragrant chew toy for the two Alpha males to lock antlers over. The Edge is testosterone laden stuff, as you’d expect from Mamet, but it’s also a bit slack and lazy, which you don’t really expect from him. It’s very much a big budget adventure movie, it feels very much an attempt by Tamahori to atone for the flop of Mulholland Falls (1996). Hey, Hollywood, I can still be trusted to make a movie people will want to see! is pretty much the subtext to every frame of The Edge. And Tamahori certainly makes a movie worth watching. Savvy enough to take advantage of the quite breath-taking (a cliché; but clichés are clichés for a reason; they are true) landscapes; at once both threatening and bucolic. And the action when it erupts is certainly convincingly pulse accelerating. Hopkins and Baldwin do seem to be in remarkably dangerous proximity to Bart the Bear when he is lunging and roaring at them like a massive, enraged, uh, bear. It’s thrilling stuff; no doubt the result of sharp editing, plucky stunt doubles and Bart the Bear’s profoundly professional refusal to maim and eat anyone, despite every instinct in him probably urging him to do so. It feels real, in short. Of course it’s an illusion, it’s a movie; but it’s a damn good illusion.

The Edge is very good at creating the illusion that these two dudes are out there alone. Obviously, at all times there would have been a small army of people milling about. With Mr. Baldwin’s latte stirrer and Mr. Hopkins’ nail buffer etc all hovering like midges, to ensure any hardship never exceeded the limits acceptable to millionaires who pretend to be imaginary people for money. It does actually feel like they are stuck out there, dependent on their own meagre resources, whatever they can scrape up from the land and Morse’s learning. Well, for most of the movie it works; as the end nears things get a bit daft. The pair come up with some quite amazing trapping contraptions for a fashion photographer and a billionaire in a non-specific industry; these reach their absurd peak when the fellas are shown wearing home-made clothes fashioned from the pelt of a slain animal. Luckily the actors pick up the slack when all else fails. We’re talking Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin here; if you can’t find entertainment in those two, well, then that’s why God invented bears.

Anthony Hopkins gives it The Full Hopkins, no doubt inwardly delighted that his older, more sedentary character bests the virile young pretender in almost every scene. Actually, Hopkins’ performance is far better than the movie it inhabits. Yes, he does a bit of face mauling and even that sort of vacant stare thing that he holds just long enough for me to start looking around to find someone who can help him; but, mostly it’s good stuff. There’s actually a distinct arc visible in his character throughout The Edge. Starting off introverted and remote, Morse slowly thaws into someone who appreciates life and can open himself up to people, and all it takes is incredible physical hardship, the death of two people and the realisation his wife is playing away. A small price to pay for a billionaire seeing the sunny side of life. “Never feel sorry for a man who owns a plane.” is repeated several times (just so we don’t miss it), but (SPOILER) it turns out that men who own planes have feelings too. The movie has a few messages, a few too many as these messages kind of trip over each other, but one of the messages is definitely that rich people have feelings too. Boo fucking hoo. Personally, I could give less of a shit about rich peoples’ feelings, but Anthony Hopkins nearly makes me care; he’s that good. Alec Baldwin gets to have more fun as the macho smarm machine angling to replace Morse as Mickey’s favourite bedroom pastime. Charismatically unpleasant as ever, Baldwin tries hard to sell Bob’s later change of nature, but the implacable predictability of the movie works against him.

Because, yes, The Edge is quite a predictable movie, but that isn’t a failure on its part; it seems more than comfortable with that. The Edge is very much at peace with spending quite a lot of time setting up things that will quite blatantly pay off later. The pilot laughingly says he sure hopes they don’t encounter a bird-strike! Do you think they will shortly encounter a bird-strike? Morse has a noggin stuffed with facts purloined from books, but has never been able to put them into practice. Do you think Morse will be able to put some of his book learning into practice over the 117 minute run time? Morse and Bob are initially accompanied by Stephen (Harold Perrineau), who is not Caucasian, is winningly affable and might as well have “Bear Food” and a Use By Date stamped on his forehead. Guess what happens to the luckless Stephen? It is firmly established that a Kodiak bear will never stop killing once it has tasted the flesh of man. Do you think they will encounter a…well, basically, does a bear shit in the woods? Or as bears say, is The Edge a fun chunk of sub-Jack London hokum? Well, yes. Duh. Ask a silly question...But there’s nothing wrong with professionally done fun chunks of hokum. certainly not when you’ve had one of those days.

Petals to the Metal Part 6: TAZ Pre-Finale Relisten Recap

I keep forgetting how links on Tumblr work. This is unrelated to the episode – just kind of a me problem.

Lil-Jerry-fraid-o-trains starts knocking on the door at the beginning of the episode, threatening to blow the boys’ cover. Really should have tied him up. Nat 20 hindsight check, I guess.

Magnus “I am justice” Burnsides is singlehandedly responsible for the entire death toll during this god damn Hammerhead adventure

Griffin: “Well I’m not a nerd, so like–” Travis: “WE’RE DOING A D&D PODCAST.”

Taako shoving Marvey’s own stun baton into his face and making him piss himself is simultaneously his most badass melee attack and his first one in the podcast.

I can’t believe Merle has a quick-therapy spell.

Seeing Merle attempt to cast calm emotion on the Hunger would be interesting, though, now that I think about it.

Time to analyze the shit out of the boys’ masks!

Magnus = bear. Pretty much the most straightforward one. Both are strong, bulky, and pretty dang dangerous if you mess with them. My favorite part of Magnus/Travis choosing bear, though, is the dope character and plot consequences it has down the road. Magnus judo-flipping a Kodiak bear and then training with the power bear? Yes. Magnus subsequently learning that the true meaning of strength is knowing when to ask for help and letting other people support you rather than “taking the big hit” all the time? Hell yes. I’ll probably yell about Magnus’s baller character development a lot later on, but for now I’ll just say that this mask choice kicks off a very fucking good character arc and it’s super cool.

Taako = mongoose. Little bit less straightforward, but the reason I love this one is because of how neatly Justin ties it into Taako’s already established character and backstory (I think his backstory had already been established in donor episodes by this point, but please correct me if I’m wrong). Obviously, Taako’s rant about mongooses being impervious to poison and how his own character is “multi-dimensional! Fuck!” is recognized as being a super duper excellent moment, but I also really like the comparison he makes to the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, which is about a mongoose that is taken in by a human family and then kills the cobras that live in their yard and threaten their safety. First of all, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and mongooses in general being deceivingly harmless creatures (see: simple idiot wizard) who can actually fuck your shit up in a big way is obviously a pretty spot-on parallel. But the second layer of that, which is that Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a lone wild animal until he is taken in by a loving family, upon which point he steps up to go to bat for them, is also very reflective of Taako’s relationship to the rest of the THB.

Merle = owl. This one threw me for a loop because I was simultaneously like “Oh yeah! I could totally see Merle as an owl!” while also being like “He’s a goof who tried to fuck a plant two episodes ago, which doesn’t really fit the whole ‘wisdom’ thing”. But later episodes, particularly in the Stolen Century, show that Merle is wise, just not really in the conventional sense of the word. He’s got a plant fetish and he does/says some weird shit, but when it counts he knows what to say. (see: literally any of his interactions with John, plus the first church of Fungston). Owls being the only non-mammalian, nocturnal animal out of the THB’s selections could also point to Merle feeling like the replaceable member of the team, although that’s a bit of a reach. It’s also worth noting that, while owls are the archetypal symbols of ‘wisdom’, real life owls can kind of be assholes. Also, they barf up whole mice skeletons. That’s not relevant. I just forgot it was a thing they do.

Pacific Rim Headcanon: The Early Years Timeline, 2024...

For those who’ve forgotten, this timeline accompanies my Generation K prequel series for Pacific Rim. It is my headcanon mixed with movie, novel, and extended canons of every kaiju attack and other significant events in the Kaiju War, including several original Jaeger characters and lots of original kaiju, based on the movie canon that the number of attacks steadily increased after 2013. See end of post for links to the previous years and a guide to my original Jaegers.

January 1, 2024 (1 month, 8 days since last attack): Bukavac, Category IV, attacks Nome, Alaska and is destroyed by Brawler Yukon, Romeo Blue, and Tacit Ronin.

This is Brawler Yukon’s first combat since it was taken out of commission to serve as the Jaeger Academy’s “training mech” after being badly damaged in November 2015.

January 30, 2024 (29 days since last attack): Xiangliu, Category III, attacks Laoag City, Philippines, and is destroyed by Tacit Ronin and Horizon Brave.

Tacit Ronin becomes the first Jaeger since the earliest days of the war to have back-to-back combat deployments.

February 24, 2024 (25 days since last attack): Ordure, Category IV, attacks Eureka, California, US and is destroyed by Striker Eureka, Mammoth Apostle, Romeo Blue and Yankee Star.

February 29, 2024: Leap Day Jaeger Remembrance. Rangers and supporters of the Jaeger Program and PPDC hold world-wide memorial events for the PPDC personnel and Jaeger pilots who have been killed in the war.

Tendo Choi and the remaining pilots of Class 2016-B gather in Anchorage to honor Yancy Becket and their other classmates who have died in the war.

Raleigh Becket witnesses some memorials from the Wall of Life’s Seattle site, but does not participate.

March 20, 2024 (25 days since last attack): Savage, Category III, attacks French Polynesia, but escapes Hydra Corinthian and Amazon Delta. It reemerges in the Sea of Japan and is destroyed by Nova Hyperion and Tacit Ronin.

April 7, 2024 (17 days since last attack): Zernobog, Category IV, attacks Sendai, Japan and is repelled by Nova Hyperion and Shaolin Rogue before being destroyed by Cherno Alpha at the Siberian Wall off the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia, .

August 28, 2024 (14 days after last attack): Biantal, Category IV, attacks Taipei, Taiwan, and is killed by Crimson Typhoon and Vulcan Specter.

September 14, 2024 (16 days after last attack): Taranais, Category IV, attacks Queen Charlotte Sound, New Zealand, and is destroyed by Tacit Ronin and Cherno Alpha.

September 25, 2024 (11 days since last attack): Rachnid, Category IV, attacks Brisbane, Australia and is destroyed by Striker Eureka and Mammoth Apostle.

Vulcan Specter and Striker Eureka initially deploy alone, but Vulcan Specter’s reactor sustains catastrophic damage resulting in a nuclear meltdown.

Vulcan’s pilots, Devi and Susanti Hassan, receive fatal doses of radiation, and elect to walk Vulcan off the continental shelf and self-destruct to save Brisbane from fallout.

With 9 kills, Vulcan Specter is the most successful Jaeger in history to date.

September 29, 2024: Nagasaki Shatterdome closes and its commanding officer, Colonel Sanae Okita, is removed. Japan’s Jaeger Program is consolidated in Tokyo Shatterdome.

September 30, 2024: Tamsin Sevier dies of cancer.

October 1, 2024: The PPDC and UN direct the commanding officers of the Shatterdomes to choose one representative to report on the Jaeger Program. Stacker Pentecost is chosen partly by default as the only volunteer.

October 3, 2024: Tendo Choi resigns as Support Chief for Striker Eureka and returns to Anchorage as Support Chief of the Mark-3 Restoration Program.

Indra Hassan, former Support Chief of Vulcan Specter and cousin of the late Devi and Susanti Hasan, remains in Sydney as Striker Eureka’s Support Chief.

October 4, 2024 (9 days since last attack): Likho, Category III, attacks Kuching, Malaysia and is destroyed by Striker Eureka.

Mammoth Apostle is destroyed, and both of its pilots, Ken Gould and Bobby Kanda, former US National Guardsmen, are killed.

October 18, 2024: Lima Shatterdome closes.

October 31, 2024 (27 days since last attack): Fiend, Category IV, attacks Acapulco, Mexico, and is destroyed by Striker Eureka.

Before being destroyed, Tailspitter is engaged by Tacit Ronin and Katana Eagle and destroys Katana Eagle.

Katana Eagle’s pilots, Bora Sagong of South Korea and Riyoji Aso of Japan, are both killed.

November 30, 2024 (11 days since last attack): Kojiyama, Category III, is destroyed by Crimson Typhoon in the Bohai Sea.

Maybe I’m fueling the fire by letting myself eat dessert every day. I think it makes me feel better.

I hurt myself running nearly two weeks ago and yesterday was the first day I exercised again. It felt good. Today was rainy and sad outside and I didn’t feel like it. I think tomorrow I’ll want to since it’s supposed to be sunny and warm.

My last Kroger trip was one week ago. I bought (in addition to real food): a 12-pack of Cadbury mini creme eggs, a bag of ~150 Cadbury eggs, a mini cup of Haagen Dazs coffee ice cream, a pint of Enlightened marshmallow peanut butter ice cream, a pint of Enlightened chocolate peanut butter ice cream, a Kodiak blueberry muffin, a Kodiak double chocolate chip muffin, and a four-pack of Betty Crocker chocolate mug cakes. I’ve eaten almost all of it. Dessert every day makes me happy. I don’t see much of a problem with it since I only eat about 800 calories in food every day. I should start exercising again, though. That makes me feel good too.

Next time I go to Kroger, I think I’d like to buy a bunch of the single-serving cups of Haagen Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s instead of pints because I can control myself better that way. Maybe I’ll buy Enlightened too and make sure to measure my portions out. I think I’ll get some more Kodiak muffins and maybe try their pancake cups too. Maybe more mug cakes, I think the funfetti and cinnamon roll ones look good. I don’t think I’ll buy anymore chocolate, but maybe a small package for a special treat one day.

Is this progress? Maybe...

Food of June + Yoga Strap

Or a favorites post if you will. It just so happens that pretty much all of the favorites of this month are food items. Are you surprised though? The first Saturday of June we had another volleyball tournament. I always grab snacks to take because the food there is usually just piles of sugar. My first favorite are these banana chips from Target. I always forget how much I enjoy banana chips until I have them again. We have another tournament this weekend and I picked some up to enjoy again. Next up are another Kashi Bar. These were also purchased for the before mentioned tournament. I bought them from Target as well. These were the Almond Snickerdoodle flavor. I am seriously in love this this nut butter line they've put out. Also from Target, (are you seeing a trend here?) Kodiak Cakes - Dark Chocolate. Now, I have not make pancakes with these yet. I did however use the recipe on the back of the box to make muffins and they were delicious. This mix also included tiny chocolate chips. Um, hello sold. I'll share the recipe soon! The last food item on my list is a couple flavors of Halo Top. When I have an ice-cream/sugar craving we go for Halo Top. At least if I devour the whole pint it's way less junk than say a Ben & Jerry's. Eventually we will have tried every flavor but until then we try new flavors each time. This time we went for Red Velvet and Chocolate Almond Crunch. The red velvet had little chunks of cake in it and I can't ever get enough of almond flavor. At Christmas time the Spritz are my favorite for this reason. My last favorite of June is a very recent purchase. So I finally caved and bought a yoga strap. I want to be able to get a deeper more meaningful stretch. We have been playing volleyball for a couple hours on Wednesday and Thursday so the other days I either lift or do PiYo. I have found so much enjoyment in the Flow section of PiYo that I thought I'd focus on that more in other workouts. I ordered this strap off of Amazon and payed less that $6 for it. Questions!
