Tumblr media

The Beaumont, Style et Art déco
Tumblr media Tumblr media
© The Beaumont

Audio
I had a conversation with a friend yesterday where, using this specific remix I’d done for a contest a month ago as an example, I found myself discussing the fairly massive divide between artistic/creative intent and the end result of any sort of creative work as its perceived by the general public.
It’s something I think about often. That gulf between the creator and the “meaning” of his/her creations as defined by two entirely different metrics; one being the creator’s own interpretation of their work and the other being, well...everyone else’s interpretation.
And, yeah, I’m referring to a remix -- thus, not exactly my own work -- but still.
Piecing this together from the original song was one of the more bizarre audio experiments I’ve undertaken. Not only did I do so in a relatively short period of time (meaning a day and a half of obsessive experimentation), but listening to the lyrics over and over and over again, I felt this compulsion to dissemble them, somehow. And that wasn’t at all my original intent.
I wanted to take this perfectly lovely, catchy song and somehow distort the “identity” of the song. On some level, I’m sure it was inspired in part by delving in and cutting up/arranging/re-arranging the individual bits and pieces of the original song, but it wasn’t long before I began adding touches and layers and nuances that I wasn’t even sure anyone would even notice when listening to the end result. In that respect, the meaning of the song, for me, became something else entirely; something much more personal. It felt like I was hiding things in plain sight, in a way.
Near the end, any semblance of the original meaning of the song had become lost within this labyrinth of sound and secrets I’d created for myself. In place of that original meaning were abstract notions of time and melancholy and a sense of something gentle that had been twisted, subtly and not-so-subtly, mixed with an experimental blend of synthpop, touches of ambience, various metallic resonances, and more. Near the end of the track, I very deliberately altered the order of the lyrics in some attempt to change the ‘ending’ of the story, so to speak, and the entire span of the last minute became some effort to convey a sense of unspoken, ambiguous importance.
And even though it wound up becoming this sprawling experiment of sorts, I was proud of the results almost entirely because of the sense of personal accomplishment that came with having changed the story.
Of course, I would never, ever, EVER expect anyone to gleam even a fraction of that from listening to the song by itself, and in a way, maybe it’s wrong for me to delve into all the thoughts and processes that went behind remixing the track. Art, after all, is such a profoundly personal thing. It seems unfair to have the person who made something say “yeah, this is what I meant when I did this, so therefore, that’s what it means”, and that’s not at all what I’m trying to convey.
I didn’t win the contest, but the guy hosting it enjoyed the remix, stating that it reminded him of “something that sounded like it was from space" and that it made him think of...Space Invaders. And so, as a consolation prize, he’s sent me a Space Invaders toy and some related stickers in the mail, which should be arriving this week.
I got a pretty good laugh out of that. The sheer disparity of meaning between my own interpretation and a listener’s comparison to a retro arcade title.
Art be crazy, yo. And that’s the way it should be.
