Eurovision 2007 - Number 44 - MAP - "Grain de sel"

MAPs full name is Ministère des affaires populaires, and they're a five-piece band from Lille who combine hip-hop with accordion music and left-wing political commentary. Yes. It's exceedingly French. They mix all that in with hint of raï music and most intriguingly they use ch'ti, a dialect of French used in the Picardy and Pas de Calais regions of northern France.

They're sort of a combination of the other two French acts I've covered previously in that their style and output overlap somewhat with Les Fatals Picards and BZR, Chab Hamid, and Mehdi. They were chosen by TV channel France 4, a channel that switches between children's TV and family output during the day and cultural shows in the evenings. That three of France's TV channels all independently chose political-adjacent punky/rappy/hip-hop songs is a little bit weird.

Grain de sel (Grain of Salt) is self-referential and that's understating it. Not only are the multiple references to mixing North African, Mediterranean, and black cultures in with French culture (and adding spice), but there are also lots of references to this being on TV and in French homes - which is what they were having spent their careers performing at underground gigs and concerts and being relatively far from the public eye unless you were from Lille.

It's a vigorously challenging, perhaps even chastising song. There's less tomfoolery and more agitprop with proclamations of disruption and shaking up the system aimed at the French public rather than a European wide audience. It's a song that was meant to be performed on this show and not really any further. MAP were not harbouring any ambitions to get to Eurovision, but instead using this as a platform to outline their own manifesto.

Given that and the bracing nature of the rap, not even the accordion and violin could soften the reception and they ended up in the batch of unplaced songs somewhere between fifth and last place. No matter, MAP had done what they set out to achieve. They added some tabasco, pepper, and grit into the French oyster.

After this there were a couple of more albums that got released prior to 2010 before the members went their separate ways. Two of them, rapper HK (Kaddour Hadadi) and accordionist Jeoffrey Arnone formed a new band, HK & les Saltimbanks. This moved away from hip-hop and towards blues, reggae and chaâbi music from Algeria. What didn't change was their commitment to political causes from the environment to immigration to homelessness. Their song On lâche rien (We Don't Give Up) has become a rallying cry at various protests within France. Here it is.
