the thing I find charming about the jedi apprentice books is the absolute dedication to giving obi wan a taster of literally every other character's personal trauma.
oh you were a child slave? yeah that happened to him. you had to kill someone you cared about to protect innocent lives? yeah he did that at like 13. you were forced to lead children into battle as a child yourself? obi wan did that. you had to live on the run from all factions of a planet torn by civil war? that happened to obi wan like three times.
also as an adult he never once mentions any of this. icon behaviour.

AU where Xanatos is "redeemed by the power of cute," but it's actually a psychological whammy caused by Obi-Wan being supernaturally adorable as a species-specific juvenile defense mechanism, and is functionally immediate brainwashing by the 13yo who doesn't know that's what he's doing.
Tbh this is mostly just Defense Mechanism that makes Xanatos harmless, but in a way everyone finds very concerning and uncomfortable because it's kind of mind control.
Someone (@dracothulhu) asked if it was related to Mimic Spider AU, and it is not! Mimic spider AU is just "ohhhh you wanna fuck me so b--PSYCH! EATING YOU."
This is more "I'm a little baby, I'm SUCH a little baby, you don't want to hurt me, you could never hurt me, I'm so adorable I'm so cute doesn't it just kill you to think about hurting me?"
Mimic spider AU is just Hot and Confident. This is straight up Mind Whammie.
@threebea also thought brood parasitism, and offered:
I'm trying to figure out a reason for the Stewjoni to have like brood parasitism where they will stick their young with other families for awhile before picking them up Used to do it to Mandoalorians all the time, and it's part of the reason the Mandalorian adopt anything stereotype got so strong. Stewjoni looking at Jedi: those seem parent shaped here you go
Which is great, except I actually started with the idea of it being kind of the inverse!
(That said, I won't actually say no to the brood parasitism option.)
Xanatos: had been about to kidnap and put him on a deep sea mine now is feeding him pudding Is it he's acting normal but doing weird things or is he suddenly talking to Obi-Wan like he's an adorable puppy
He's kind of zoned out.
Xanatos: look at him so cute Omg Obi-Wan: standing there Xanatos: kriff I don't have a camera - also from threebea
Also cuddles! Which Obi-Wan actually Does Not Want. But if he's Very Very Still then maybe Qui-Gon will find him and fix this.
Like if a tiger held and groomed you and you just were waiting Very Still for the zookeeper to distract it and/or load up the tranq.
After the days he's had he'd perhaps like a cuddle but not from this guy Lol Xanatos: so soft The effect only works on humans and near humans so it didn't work on the hutt and (can't remember the other species) on the ship
We can say it works through the Force and that's why the Hutt is immune.
"Stewjoni are targets of slavers" but specifically for illegal adoptions. It's lucrative, because most bounty hunters last about twenty seconds before they give the crying baby back where it wants to go.
And most of the immune ones get caught by planetary defense forces.
So if you CAN steal a baby, the profit margin is insane, since it's so damn hard to do, but the baby up for illegal adoption is sooooo cute.
(…this concept would be hilarious with one of those "Tor adopts baby Ben Kenobi to turn into a weapon" AUs. Still a shitty childhood bc Death Watch can justify a lot under the umbrella of Teaching Self-Defense. But interesting.)
IF YOU HAVE READ TWILIGHT: do you remember the bit about vampire babies being so cute that people would let them slaughter entire villages without a qualm?
It's like that, except Obi-Wan doesn't have dreams of mass slaughter and it only really activates as a Threat Response.
I guess the evolutionary trigger is it's kind of a paralytic You can't move far from where you stole the kid
Which is exactly right!

the real reason no Jedi was willing to train Obi-Wan as a Padawan was that they could all tell that Yoda was going to be the worst possible helicopter grandmaster regardless of their own lineage affiliation
Qui-Gon was the only soul brave enough to face such scrutiny, seemingly immune to the concern
(Qui-Gon, by virtue of being Yoda's grandpadawan himself, simply doesn't realize that this level of involvement from Yoda isn't standard)

Guide to Jedi Ranking Terminology
I see a lot of confusion about this in fic, so I thought I’d make a post about it. I hope it’s helpful!
Youngling refers to a child— not just a Jedi child, but any child. A child who has been inducted into the Jedi Order is called an initiate. A Jedi initiate is generally addressed by their name, without a title— though sometimes they will be referred to as “young [Name]” by their elders.
A Padawan, Padawan learner, or Jedi apprentice is an initiate who has been apprenticed to a master for formal training. Padawans are not always teenagers; for example, Obi-Wan Kenobi was a Padawan well into his twenties, while Ahsoka Tano, at fourteen years of age, was still considered a youngling at the start of her apprenticeship. They are generally addressed as “Padawan [Name.]”
A Jedi Knight is a Jedi who has been knighted— that is, completed their apprenticeship. The term Jedi Knight refers to any fully-trained Jedi, whether they have attained the rank of master or not. They are generally addressed as “Master [Name,]” not “Knight [Name.]”
A Jedi Master is a Jedi Knight who has been officially recognized as being especially proficient in the Force, typically for training an apprentice to knighthood. They are generally addressed as “Master [Name.]”
A Grandmaster or Grand Master is a Jedi who has been named head of the Order. There is usually, but not always, only one Grandmaster at a time. The Grandmaster is typically recognized in an official capacity as the wisest and oldest member of the Order. They are generally addressed as “Master [Name.]”
Master of the Order, also known as Master of the Council or Grand Master of the Jedi High Council, is the head of the Jedi Council. Prior to the Clone Wars, this title was distinct from that of Grandmaster. For example, Yoda was head of the Order, but Mace Windu was head of the Council. As such, Yoda deferred to Windu on Council matters, such as when the decision to train Anakin Skywalker as a Jedi Knight was ratified by the Council. During the Clone Wars, Windu stepped down from the position to take a more active role on the battlefield, though he remained on the Council; the position was then filled by Yoda. The Master of the Order is generally addressed as “Master [Name.]”
All Jedi above the rank of Padawan are addressed as “Master [Name.]” When one does not know a Jedi’s name, “Master Jedi” is used, such as when Taun We greeted Obi-Wan Kenobi on Kamino.

How Dooku was with Qui-Gonn vs. how Qui-Gon was with Obi-Wan.
I made this while was was still only vaguely familiar with the ‘Jedi Apprentice’ books so forgive my kinda mix up of the time line (I now know he left Obi-Wan on Melida/Daan AFTER Obi-Wan was kidnapped by Xanatos). But yeah Qui-Gon being the vagabond weed Dad lines up with him leaving Obi-Wan on a war-torn planet lol.

One of the reasons that the headcanon that Qui-Gon "repudiated" Feemor post-Xanatos really bothers me is that the characterization we get of Qui-Gon really lends itself more to the idea that he might've CLUNG to Feemor rather than pushed him away. There's zero indication that Qui-Gon has cut off all contact with the people he had relationships with prior to Xanatos (Yoda, Mace, Tahl) and one of the reasons he's so disinclined to take a new apprentice is the fear that he'll make the same mistakes he did with Xanatos and cause their fall. But if he has a whole other apprentice that he WAS successful with, wouldn't he instead cling to that proof that he's not actually a failure? Even just as a comfort?
I propose an AU where Qui-Gon actually ends up partnering with Feemor post-Xanatos in order to always have that comfort nearby. Feemor wants Qui-Gon to get back into the saddle of teaching but knows Qui-Gon well enough to understand that throwing him into that saddle won't go well for anybody, so he decides on a trickier plan and takes a Padawan of his own (his first Padawan since he became a Knight) and ask for Qui-Gon's assistance. Since Qui-Gon is partnering with him, it's inevitable that they'd end up basically sharing the responsibility of teaching any Padawan that Feemor takes, but Feemor intentionally makes sure Qui-Gon knows that he's nervous about it and will want his Master's guidance.
So instead of becoming Qui-Gon's Padawan, Obi-Wan ends up becoming FEEMOR'S Padawan. Qui-Gon sees right through all of this of course, but he can't really do anything about it and he doesn't really mind helping Feemor with a Padawan the way he would if he had sole responsibility. He bonds with Obi-Wan relatively easily and the three of them become an incredible team.
And then you can get real angsty with it and say that Feemor died before the events of TPM, so Qui-Gon obviously took over Obi-Wan's apprenticeship on his own afterwards.

Dragon!jedi designs for some of Obi-wan's friends
(warning, I have basically zero visual reference for the Jedi Apprentice main cast, so I'm just kind of winging it by the vague descriptions)
Also, Bant ended up so cute, that I wanted to go with something that's somewhere between a fish and a seal (Also yeah I still know that the term "dragon" is really stretched out in my AU but I'm having fun with it so it will stay that way lol)

What ultimately gets me every time about Star Wars(including the Star Wars Jedi Apprentice series) is how much Obi-Wan suffered throughout it all, as well as his destiny of infinite sadness. From before he had even become a man, he was fighting for the light and for good and it backfired in every instance. He worked hard as an initiate to find a master to take him on, but was ultimately unsuccessful until Bandomeer where Qui-Gon finally decided to take him. He did his best to be a good padawan and still follow the will of the force, especially once Melida/Daan happened and he chose to stay with the Young to help them fight. He still ended up leaving the order and breaking his bond with Qui-Gon to stay and help the Young. But Cerasi still ended up dead anyway and so he went back to the Jedi. We also know that Obi-Wan had a mission on Mandalore when he was still a padawan, where he was assigned to protect Duchess Satine Kryze, and where he consequently fell in love with her. Obi-Wan himself confirmed that he would have left the order(again) and chosen to stay with Satine if she had only asked him, but she never did. Obi-Wan wasn’t allowed that happiness or love. Then later Obi-Wan has to watch Satine be murdered by Maul right in front of him as he is helpless. He had to watch as Qui-Gon freed Anakin from slavery and decided to take Anakin on and thrust Obi-Wan into the knighting trials when he was clearly not ready. Obi-Wan had to watch as Qui-Gon dropped dead from Maul’s killing strike while protecting him and Anakin that same week. Obi-Wan had to promise to Qui-Gon to train Anakin, a challenge that Obi-Wan was in no way prepared or ready for as a freshly padawan-turned-knight. Obi-Wan had to suffer through slavery on Zygerria with Rex, an experience where he became severely injured and suffered immensely from both his physical injuries and the mental and emotional injuries of witnessing the other slaves hurting too. How about the Rako Hardeen mission? Obi-Wan had to do what the council(and the chancellor) asked and follow through with the mission, changing himself bodily and suffering mentally in the process. Obi-Wan was harassed over the mission and the fact that he did not inform people of the mission prior. Yet he was only doing what he had to- an undercover mission where the details HAD to be classified. How about Anakin’s betrayal? Obi-Wan had to watch as the boy he RAISED and loved like his own son or younger brother fell. Watched him turn so dark that he had to put him down. Obi-Wan had to force himself to do what needed to be done to keep Anakin from taking any further harmful and murderous actions. Obi-Wan had to deal with the fallout of his SON falling hard to the point where he slaughtered the jedi younglings in cold blood and turned away from everything Obi-Wan had taught him. Obi-Wan had to help Padme through her pregnancy and then urgently rush to find them good homes where they can be raised safely away from their father. Obi-Wan had to suffer through Order 66 and watching his men that he cared deeply for turn on him. Obi-Wan had to witness the chaos of Jedi masters and knights and padawans dropping one after the other from the betrayal of the clones(since the Jedi did not know of the inhibitor chips at the time- making it even more heartbreaking for them). Obi-Wan had to exile himself on Tatooine after everything that had gone down, withering away in both appearance and spirit. And then, he had to die, die by being killed by his own ex-padawan- his son.

it's an open secret that Obi-Wan Kenobi is Battlemaster Cin Drallig's illegitimate son, and that that's why Initiate Kenobi spends so much time training in the salles, trying to live up to that legacy (and relish that connection with his only known family member; besides, he really likes lightsaber training)
except somehow, Qui-Gon Jinn has missed this memo
when the man publicly lays into the child at the Initiate's Lightsaber exhibition for 'being too aggressive' and 'focusing on nothing of importance in favor of perfecting his lightsaber technique', Tahl is only the first of many Masters to privately pull him aside and try to smack some sense into him
and let's just say that he finds himself inexplicably at odds with the Battlemaster for the rest of his life
