Favorite Show of 2024: Air
Several months ago I had the pleasure of catching Air play a show at The Fox Theatre in Detroit while on tour for the 25th anniversary of their seminal debut LP, Moon Safari. Throughout their career, the French duo consisting of multi-instrumentalists Nicolas Goldin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel has managed to cultivate the sort of slightly proggy, downtempo electronic lounge pop that has a perpetually sleek and ornate sound, but rendered with a sly ingenuity that challenges the all too easy, knee jerk projection of soullessness. Air's music may go down easy, but the duo exude a sonic tinkerer's mentality (particularly on their first few LPs) that's resulted in shades of jazz, prog, avant-garde electronica, and bossa nova woven into the fabric of their sound without breaking its breezy spell. MS is widely considered their best work, and is the most comprehensive showcase of what they excel at. Based on the show that I caught on this tour, I get the impression that I would enjoy watching them perform most if not all of their material, but it's hard to imagine them improving upon the magic of playing their opus from start to finish. Air's performance of MS was, by every conceivable measure (the songs themselves, the individual performances, the sound of each mix, the overall light show, etc) one of the best shows that I've ever seen, and without question the best show I saw in 2024.
Before Air took flight, they had a DJ open for them. While it seemed strange to watch a DJ play a set at a large indoor venue like The Fox, it was extremely refreshing to hear a DJ set mixed so well, and it felt appropriate for the bill of a show played by a beloved late 90s/early aughts critical darling sort of band to not have anything stated about an opening act. The DJ's set mostly consisted of the sort of hip 90s fair (Stereolab, Portishead, Björk, etc) that would appeal to the sort of older millennials that loved Air since the jump and haven't, by and large, engaged with new music anywhere near as deeply in the years since MS. While there didn't seem to be any real risks taken, or anything played that was even remotely off the beaten path for anyone who loves Air, it's hard to argue with the quality of the cuts that were played. While there's obviously nothing wrong with DJ's opening for any kind of band on paper (and given the electronics heavy disposition of Air's music in general, it felt like an inspired choice), you really have to be able to command a space like The Fox, and this DJ was just not up for that task. Despite how tight the mix sounded, the set ultimately felt more like a shrug than the showcase of someone up to the task of opening for Air that I absolutely did not need to rush over from Volmer’s to experience.
As expected, Air played MS in order all the way through as their main set, and then returned for a few encores that consisted of choice cuts from a handful of their other celebrated works. The first thing that was immediately apparent about their set was the arrangement of the performers on stage. Goldin and Dunckel each stood on opposite ends of the stage facing left and right respectively, while surrounded by a colossal collection of gear that spanned keyboards, guitars, synths, samplers, and effects units, and a drummer sat behind a kit at the back of the stage between them. It was a striking arrangement in how spartan the presentation of the members looked juxtaposed against the maximalist assortment of gear on each end. As soon as the MS opener, "La femme d'Argent", began, it became immediately apparent just how excellent the sound itself was. Regardless of how you feel about Air's music, The Fox ensured that it has never sounded better on any of their records. The synths in the high-end were ecstasy inducing, while the bass alone could just level you. The levels were perfectly balanced, and everything sounded crisp and clear. And within short order the dazzling light show came into its own, with bright hues in a perpetual state of flux flooding through the crowd for the entirety of their sets. As great as the music was, there was so much beyond that to admire about Air's performance.
With this sort of a show there were naturally no real surprises save for a few off the beaten path encore choices, and the curious choice to opt for the “Playground Love” refrain (“Highschool Lover”) even though Thomas Mars wasn’t present since they still utilized backing vocal tracks as needed for “All I Need” and “You Make It Easy”. But with this sort of a thing, the element of surprise, as far as the set itself is concerned (and the performance on the whole, really) is completely beside the point. These were immaculate renditions of pitch perfect pop songs that were already immaculate from the jump. As on the record, the transitions between songs were seamless, and only occasionally punctuated by one of the band members offering an exclamation of gratitude. There was a little bit of jamming on a few of the songs, like highlight/MS closer “Le voyage de Penelope”, but they played it pretty straight otherwise. But it wouldn’t have mattered how well you knew MS going in, because everything they played, from the giddy exuberance of “La femme d’argent”, to the funky strut of “Kelly Watch the Stars”, to the smoldering intensity of “You Make It Easy”, to the celestial sweep of “Talisman”, to the cathartic bombast of “Le voyage de Penelope” was amplified to such a degree that it felt like hearing them for the first time all over again.
After “Le voyage de Penelope”, Air departed from the stage for the formal make believe ending the show right after the main set before playing the inevitable encore exercise, returning shortly afterwards and jumping into “Radian”, which is an ambient cut off their great 2nd LP, 10 000 Hz Legend. It was as exquisitely rendered as everything else, and was a nice palate cleanser after the euphoria of the main set. Their two encores consisted entirely of songs from their 2nd LP, their terrific 3rd LP, Talkie Walkie, and “Highschool Lover”, the aforementioned highlight from their soundtrack to Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides. After “Radian”, Air tore into the first 3 cuts from TW (“Venus”, “Cherry Blossom Girl”, and “Run”), which is one of the stronger 3 song runs in their discography, bringing us right back to the sugary, synth-streaked bliss that they had been cultivating all night with those MS joints. “Highschool Lover” proved to be the perfect penultimate song to an encore with its gentle, wistful sway, while the kosmiche stomp of “Don’t Be Light” felt like a strange choice to end the evening with, but they returned for a 2nd encore shortly after disappearing off the stage once more following its springy synth coda. They returned for their 3rd set with the sparse piano number “Alone in Kyoto”, and closed out the evening with the bass heavy prog trudge “Electronic Performers”, which felt like another strange, but inspired choice. Everything worked, and served to decimate any notion of Air as a “studio band” first and foremost. Over 25 years later, the safari remains as fresh and full of possibility as ever.
