BIG DATA
HOW BIG MNC’S LIKE GOOGLE ,FACEBOOK ,INSTAGRAM ETC STORES, MANAGES AND MANIPULATE THOUSANDS OF TERRABYTES OF DATA WITH HIGH SPEED AND HIGH EFFICIENCY ?
Q) Let us talk about Big Data ?
Big data is the major growing problem that big tech companies are facing in this era of technology. You can analyze in this way that you are having 10 Gb of hard disk
and the data you want to store is above 10Gb, now how can you solve this issue. This issue is known as Big Data.
Developing Big Data applications has become increasingly important in the last few years. In fact, several organizations from different sectors depend increasingly on knowledge extracted from huge volumes of data. However, in Big Data context, traditional data techniques and platforms are less efficient. They show a slow responsiveness and lack of scalability, performance and accuracy. To face the complex Big Data challenges, much work has been carried out. As a result, various types of distributions and technologies have been developed.
GOOGLE:-
A data center normally holds petabytes to exabytes of data. Google currently processes over 20 petabytes of data per day through an average of 100,000 MapReduce jobs spread across its massive computing clusters. How much data does google handle?? This is one of those kind of questions whose answer can never be accurate. On a funnier note, it is like a child asking who come first hen or egg?? which is somewhat similar to asking “how much data does google handle??” Commonly a PC holds 1TB of storage data and a smartphone holds about 64GB, but as days pass there are newer PCs and smartphones with bigger storage than this. We all know Google is the only one who can answer any kind of question!! We simply conclude that Google knows everything!! And Everything means Everything! Now you must be wondering how much data does google handle to answer all these questions!!?? Google now processes over 40,000 search queries every second on average, which translates to over 3.5 billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide.
2.FACEBOOK:-
Facebook revealed some big, big stats on big data to a few reporters at its HQ today, including that its system processes 2.5 billion pieces of content and 500+ terabytes of data each day. It’s pulling in 2.7 billion Like actions and 300 million photos per day, and it scans roughly 105 terabytes of data each half hour. Plus it gave the first details on its new “Project Prism”.
VP of Engineering Jay Parikh explained why this is so important to Facebook: “Big data really is about having insights and making an impact on your business. If you aren’t taking advantage of the data you’re collecting, then you just have a pile of data, you don’t have big data.” By processing data within minutes, Facebook can rollout out new products, understand user reactions, and modify designs in near real-time.

Music in The Technology Age by: Romil Parikh
Music is such an important part of many people's lives. Music has come a long way from records to cassette tapes to CDs to Limewire and Frostwire to Spotify and Apple Music. The development of music along with technology is eye-opening, especially if one were to reflect how quickly the industry has evolved in the last two decades.
Starting off in 2000, Napster was a major big trend among college students. Napster allowed people to download albums for free, gain access to live versions of songs, alternative cuts, and demos. As Napster’s popularity grew across the nation and more and more people began to tuned into online music downloads. It was learned that 61% of online traffic from university servers was coming directly from MP3 file sharing. This is despite, repeated efforts by institutions to block this website. Napster was highly problematic because of copyright infringement issues and lawsuits over ownership rights. Major lawsuits from the Recording Industry Association of America, Metallica, and Jay-Z tried to shut down Napster on the claim that the website had infringed upon the artists’ intellectual property because unfinished tracks of Jay-Z’s and Metallica's music were leaked to the website. The bad publicity, lawsuits, and attempts by institutions to block the website began to take a toll on Napster, and on March 6, 2001 the company began its demise when it was ordered to follow Federal court mandate that blocked the transfer of copyrighted material on a peer to peer basis.
The rise and fall of Napster taught the world a lot about the future of music. It showed that music industry is moving online. The craze of online downloading and torrenting movies, music, photos, and other media swept the early 2000s. Many people used servers such as Limewire and Frostwire in order to illegally download media. These websites, while effective at the time, are very much outdated and highly dangerous for a person's computer. The websites were known for regularly carrying files with viruses that could steal and person’s computer data, provide a hacker with access to an individual’s personal files, and generally expose a server to viruses like the Trojan Horse.
The problems associated with torrenting and websites like Limewire and Frostwire allowed Apple to break into the market with iTunes music store in 2003. The iTunes music library was a revolutionary new product for music because it allowed music lovers to gain access to all the music they love through a cheaper and safer means. While this was incredibly popular, many users still tried to avoid paying per song and per album when they could use sources like Limewire and Frostwire as well as Pandora in order to gain access to free cheap music. This realization and thirst for cheap access to unlimited music has led to the rise of music streaming services.
Fast forwarding to almost present day, Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google Play Music, Pandora Radio, Tidal, iHeartRadio, and SoundCloud are some of the big names in the subscription music streaming industry. Subscription music streaming is a paid subscription that grants a user unlimited access to all the music available on a particular network. Billboard has reported that there are about 51 million paid subscribers in the United States. Additionally, there are another 29 million who gain access through free trails or through music bundles, like Amazon Prime. On top of that, there is another 20 million users who share an account with a paid subscriber. Finally, there are approximately 157 million users that stream the music for free. In total there are about 257 million people in the United States who currently use music streaming in some form or another.
Spotify and Apple are the two largest players in the market and they are fighting tooth and nail in order to grow their businesses. In response to a growing Apple Music popularity, Spotify announced on November 14, 2018 that it will be officially expanding to the Middle East and North Africa, Apple Music was already available in these locations. This push for market power and growth is extremely interesting because along with just spreading the service and current content to different areas the streaming services need to expand their content in order to gain popularity among international listeners. In an attempt to grow its content, Apple acquired Shazam for about $400 million on September 24, 2018. Spotify’s Discover Weekly feature is already a very popular aspect of its current service so it does not really have to try to out do Apple on its recommendations. Additionally, the social aspect of Spotify helps to make it more user friendly because people can look at what their friends are listening too as well as share their playlists with their friends. On Apple Music, a user can share their playlist, but it is more complicated and difficult to do so and a user cannot see what their friends are currently listening too.
Most popular music streaming services in the United States as of March 2018, by monthly users (in millions):
I believe that when Apple and Spotify are done fighting for the market they will look to move into the music making business. I think that the next step would be sponsoring artists and helping to push their music further on the platform under the brand of Spotify or Apple Music. I am not sure how this would work, but the proprietary content popularity could apply here the same way it worked with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime video, etc. Regardless of what happens, I am interested to see the future of music streaming and who “comes out on top”!
