Greetings, fellow seekers of the supernatural!
I am Melvyn Choly—the seasoned paranormal adventurer and author of many books such as, The Aristocrat’s Guide to Vampire Hunting and Beguiling Bog Witches.
For ages I have kept my escapades captured within the sanctity of the written page. However, as it seems that the digital life is here to stay, I have decided the time has come to share my wisdom with the wider world.
Through this online diary, I hope to recount my many daring exploits as well as those of my faithful and wearied assistant, Jasper. By sharing my notes, illustrations, and stories from my research, I hope that you, dear reader, are inspired to have adventures with the unknown for yourself!
It is also not unknown that funding for my expeditions have…dwindled as of late. There was a time when many were willing to finance my explorations with nothing more than a hunch. However, the baseless rumors that my starting an online mercantile was for this reason—well, I won’t even dignify them with a response!
Dear reader, I hope that in finding my stories, you gleam a deeper understanding of what lurks in the shadows and that your passion for the macabre will grow just as mine once did.
Embrace the extraordinary—Unveil its secrets—and discover your place in the unknown!
Yours Enigmatically,
Melvyn Choly

My parents had to postpone their wedding due to my Dad’s Aplastic Anemia diagnosis. He was given a 3% chance to live, and when he did he was told he couldn’t have kids. Here he is walking me down the aisle 39 years later on my parents original wedding date. by jaspersjourney via reddit

Jasper’s Journeys
Let’s travel back to the days of MS-DOS or Windows 3.1, or even Windows 95.  Games were simpler back then.  I remember you could buy 1001 games on a single CD-ROM and play these short but interesting experiments.  Jasper’s Journeys feels like one of those Old School games from my childhood.

When an evil witch abducts his cat Orlando, Jasper braids his fabulous fuchsia hair and sets out on a quest to rescue him.  He will travel through enchanted forests, haunted swamps, ancient ruins, and finally confront the witch herself.

This platforming adventure is full of secret rooms and hidden treasures to uncover.  There are three golden orbs hidden on each level, and if you can collect them all, you will be taken to a bonus room filled with treasure.  Jasper’s only means of attack are the magical fruits he collects throughout the world, and he can throw them at his enemies.  Spend treasure at Inns to buy potions to power up Jasper’s attacks or his jumps, making boss fights a little easier.

The graphics perfectly capture that old-school charm.  They aren’t just pixelated for the sake of it, but they really feel like they were drawn and placed by hand.  Everything flows smoothly and Jasper moves a lot faster than you might expect, but you soon get used to it.
The audio is sparse but again, retains that early-mid 90′s charm.  An 8-bit soundscape for effects and music really takes me back to the days of trying new games on my grandfather’s computer.  The music, even though it shows up rarely, is quiet, mysterious, and lonely.

Jasper’s Journeys is a well-designed exploration-centered platformer.  You won’t just be traveling to the right in this one.  Each level is a maze of sorts, most requiring you to locate colored keys in order to unlock new sections of the map.  And there are so many things to find throughout, you could spend a lot of time searching for them.  Some of the later bosses felt a wee bit overpowered to me, and without any way to backtrack to earn more treasure to buy some potions to help me out, I felt a little stuck at times.  But persevering and some quick dodging fingers helped get me through all that.  Luckily, there are no lives to keep track of, and whenever you die you restart at the last door you went through.  A welcome update compared to some older games in this genre.

Following Jasper on his journeys was an enjoyable couple of hours, and exploring the platforming levels was entertaining.  The graphics are endearing, the sound effects are beautiful, and the whole experience was worthwhile.  Remember what PC gaming used to be with this title.  This is a great little game, well worth the $4.99 asking price.
