Fever 333 - Darker White

Man, it’s been awhile since we’ve had a new Fever 333 record, isn’t it? I remember when their debut album came out in 2019, and while it was good, it was also a super generic Linkin Park rip-off. The vocals and lyrics were on point, but the instrumentation just didn’t eclipse its influences. I was still looking forward to whatever the band did next, though, because these guys have a sound that works really well for what it is. It’s been about five years, not counting the EP they dropped a couple of years ago, since their last album, so I’ve been looking forward to this. Darker White is its name, and I’ve been spinning it the last couple of weeks, so how is the album?

Frankly, this thing is a ton of fun, albeit it’s still nothing special, but they do more with their sound than their debut, anyway. The album goes into a few different styles, like rap-rock, metalcore, nu-metal, and straight up rap, but there isn’t much of a set formula to every song, so the songs ebb and flow from each style into one another. It’s quite refreshing that way, even if the album isn’t anything you haven’t heard before. The vocals and lyrics are top notch here, although I will say that Jason Butler’s cleans have always been their weakest link. He isn’t bad, but they’re nothing special, either, but it’s when he raps and he screams at that I really like. Thankfully, he employs those a lot, and it makes the album more interesting, versus just using cliched hard rock hooks.

The lyrics on this thing are worth pointing out, too, because they match the sound — over the top and to the point. Butler’s always been very politically charged in his music, and the same can be said here, mainly talking about systemic racism and discrimination that people of color experience on a daily basis, as well as the oppression that people in general experience in this country. The lyrics are on point and on the nose, even if he also isn’t quite saying anything you haven’t heard, either, but this type of stuff is still worth talking about and hearing, nonetheless.

At only 40 minutes, this is a rather quick listen, too, so it doesn’t take much time to get through. I would recommend this if you either enjoy this band already, or you want to hear some solid rap-rock / rap-metal. I don’t think this will be one of my top albums of the year, but only because it doesn’t quite go above and beyond for me. This record is really good, and it’s a lot of fun, but it’s nothing I haven’t heard before, either. Some tracks fade into the background, but it does have its highlights that I always get excited to hear every time it’s on. Despite the band being gone for the past few years, this is a welcome return, and an album that was worth the wait.

Just gonna gush over Jason Aalon Butler real quick. Letlive was literally amazing. Miss them so much. Any lyrics or concerts i’ve experienced from them & Jason have been amazing and I’ve been able to feel them. He and Letlive thoroughly captured the ‘making music/art because if i dont i will lose my mind’ thing that i adore so much. I remember back when I was working at venues, our staff was always vigilant when letlive was playing because we knew Jason was gonna go off every time. Literally he’s in my mental music hall of fame. Listen to his music.
