At 101 years old, she was a quiet yet enduring presence within the Imperial household—a sister-in-law to Emperor Showa and a witness to nearly a century of profound transformation in Japan.

Princess Yuriko’s life encompassed the tragedy and recovery of a nation through war and peace, and her graceful resilience mirrored Japan’s own journey. She bore witness to a world profoundly different from the one she was born into, marking her presence with steadfast commitment to tradition while adapting to a rapidly changing Japan. Japan’s Heisei era will end on April 30 with the abdication of Emperor Akihito. The head of the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world, he is the first Emperor of Japan to abdicate in more than 200 years. Ascending the throne at 55, following the 1989 death of his father, the Emperor and his wife, Empress Michiko, the first commoner to join the Imperial Household, created a new style for the Imperial Family. The couple attached great importance to meeting the Japanese people, traveling twice to all 47 prefectures. They also actively sought opportunities to offer comfort in times of disaster and interact with the socially vulnerable. An advocate for peace - the term 'Heisei' means 'achieving peace' - the Emperor surprised many in 2016 when he announced his concerns regarding his future ability to fully carry out his duties. A special law was enacted to allow his abdication. On May 1 Japan enters the Reiwa era with the ascension to the throne of Crown Prince Naruhito. Born in 1960, he is the eldest son of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, and was the first child to be raised by his parents - traditionally, royal children lived separately. After graduating from Gakushuin University, he attended the University of Oxford, and then graduate school in Japan - a first for a member of the Imperial Family. Married to Masako Owada in 1993, their daughter Princess Aiko was born in 2001. Crown Prince Naruhito has expressed his wish to continue his parents’ legacy of maintaining a close relationship and support for the Japanese people, and to being an advocate for peace. The name of the new Reiwa era, is taken from Manyoshu, the oldest existing anthology of Japanese poetry.
