B04: Coin Laundry Baby
Characters: Nagi, Ryui, Kafka, Netaro, Toi, Daniel & Raito Location: HAMA Summary: Ryui appears to disagree with Nagi’s concept for their tour. Nagi talks about his reasons for the concept and his upbringing. Proofreader: Shay
Translator’s Notes ☽.‎˖
Christmas should be spent with your lover: In Japan, most people view Christmas as a romantic holiday that should be spent with a lover, as opposed to the Western view of spending it with family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Momiji / Kaede: Alright, let’s start the meeting. We’ll be discussing the members of the Night Group and the concept for their first tour.
Kafka: Great.
Daniel: President~ Your hair’s styled nicely like usual~ Happy to be attending this meeting!
Nagi: So that’s how adults do their lip service…
Yodaka: …… ……
Toi: Yodaka-san, please wake up~ The meeting is starting.
Yodaka: Mm… Oh, has our ark safely reached Polaris…?
Ryui: You’re definitely not safe. What’re you talkin’ about?
Netaro: This is Earth, the third planet from the Sun in the Solar System.
Raito: I didn’t think Yodaka-san would act like this.
Momiji / Kaede: Raito-san, thank you for attending today’s meeting.
Kafka: I’ve heard you’ve been teaching Nagi the ABCs of being a leader?
Nagi: I have the honour of being the first student of Raito Cram School.
Raito: I’m worried about Nagi, but he’s got potential. He’s run his store for many years now, so he has actual experience. He’s also detail-oriented and thorough in his work.
Netaro: Oh? He’s praising you!
*Nagi blushes*
Nagi: Hehe, hehehe.
Ryui: Gross.
Daniel: He’s not used to receiving praise, huh…
Momiji / Kaede: Alright, I’d like to start off with the group’s name and the tour concept that Nagi-kun came up with. Can you tell us what they are?
Nagi: Okay. Please take a look at the document I just sent over.
Netaro: “R1ze” “Day2” “Ev3ns” and...
Toi: The name of the Night Group will be… “L4mps”?
Yodaka: Lamps. It’s warm and also gentle… It has a nice ring to it.
Ryui: …Hmph.
Nagi: “L4mps” signifies “the light where people gather”. I based it on the image of being illuminated by a street corner lamp at night.
Momiji / Kaede: What do you think, Kafka?
Kafka: It’s nice. It captures the night vibes and is also easy to picture. I’d love to use it.
Nagi: ……!
Raito: I’m happy for you, Nagi.
Momiji / Kaede: Okay, then next, we have the tour concept.
Nagi: Please look at the next page. The concept I came up with for the tour is “A trip where people’s bonds deepen”.
The “people” here refers to the individual’s family or someone they care about. It’s a trip created for them to deepen their bonds with that person and to create memories with them.
I’d like to make the trip something that will help them really strengthen their bond with their important person…
Yodaka: I think it’s great. It should make a lot of people happy.
Netaro: Being by yourself is lonely, after all. I think humans would love it.
Toi: I think so, too. I’d love to go on a trip to deepen my bond with Ani-sama. Right, Ani-sama?
Ryui: Well… I guess…
Daniel: Hey, you’re frowning.
Ryui: I feel like he’s just forcing his opinion… or more like, his values onto me. I don’t like it.
Nagi: Forcing?
Ryui: Yeah. It’s like saying [*]Christmas should be spent with your lover. It feels like those people should just mind their own business.
Nagi: ……………
Momiji / Kaede: (I don’t think Nagi-kun is used to these meetings. He looks troubled hearing an opposing opinion… I should help him out–)
Raito: Yeah. As long as humans live in a society, people’s bonds and their sensitivity, like how Ryui is, for example, will always be a fundamental issue.
That’s why it would be great if people could use trips as a reason to change for the better. Is that how we should interpret it, Nagi?
Nagi: …… Thank you.
Momiji / Kaede: (R–Raito-san. Great job supporting Nagi…!)
Ryui: Hmph, the teacher’s gonna answer ‘cause the student can’t? Well, whatever.
So this tour package isn’t for people with family issues, right? Not everyone has a happy family, you know.
What about the people who don’t have “someone important”? There are people who don’t have friends or a lover they can go on the trip with.
Kafka & Raito: ……
Ryui: Sure, the concept might sound fine on pape–
Nagi: Oh, yeah. That would be me.
Momiji / Kaede: What?
Netaro: You’re a human with family issues? Or you’re a human who doesn’t have “someone important”?
Nagi: Both. I’m an orphan.
Toi: Wha?
Nagi: I was abandoned when I was about 3 years old at a coin laundry. Maybe they forgot about me, like a sock in a washing machine.
Momiji / Kaede: What…?
Netaro: So that’s why you’re running a coin laundry? You think they’re going to come back to pick you up?
Nagi: Yeah. I’m still waiting, though.
Raito: …Do you have any clues? Your memories from when you were 3 must be pretty hazy, right?
Nagi: I don’t have anything tangible that can serve as a clue, but my clothes had a nametag on it. I think “Nagi” is my real name.
(I vaguely remember receiving a four-leaf clover. I wonder if that was my “mother”...?)
Ryui: ……………
Toi: …… I see. That’s why you were so kind to me when I was looking for Ani-sama…
Nagi: Oh, it’s not something you guys should be crying about. To be honest, I don’t feel depressed or anything.
Momiji / Kaede: I see…
Nagi: Uh, after that, I grew up at an orphanage. I think that’s where I started wanting a “family” more than others…
Maybe that’s why I’m not very assertive. It’s kind of embarrassing saying it aloud after all this time.
Ryui: …ain’t.
Nagi: Hm?
Ryui: It ain’t embarrassing at all! If this is what you want, then that’s fine!! Stand proud!!
Nagi: Huh? Uh, okay.
Ryui: …Sigh, I’ve understood that that’s what you’re yearning for, but that’s also why I have to say this all the more.
Who’re you going to go on this trip with? You can’t even take part in the tour you came up with yourself.
Kafka: …… Okay. I take it that everyone is fine with this concept?
Yodaka: It seems so.
Momiji / Kaede: Alright, then the tour concept will be “A trip where people’s bonds deepen”...! Thanks for working so hard, Nagi-kun.
Nagi: Oh… Okay. Thanks.
Ryui: ……
Daniel: What’s with that frown, Ryui? Got the wind knocked outta your sails? Hahaha.
Ryui: No, I’m not frownin’, and no, I didn’t get the wind knocked outta my sails.
But, well, you should’ve talked about that first. It’ll change how people react to the concept.
Nagi: …Sorry.
Ryui: You can just say, “Okay, I’ll do that next time”. Stop apologising all the time, ghostly idiot.
Nagi: Okay, I’ll do that next time. Thanks.
Momiji / Kaede: Alright… then, let’s stop here for now–
Kafka: Oh, Manager-chan, wait a minute. There’s something else I want to announce.
Momiji / Kaede: Oh, what is it?
Kafka: I just got a phone call from the owner of the property Ryui and Toi were eyeing earlier. He said he can let Ryui have it for his store.
Ryui: What?
Toi: Huh!?
Momiji / Kaede: I–Is that true!?
Ryui: That geezer, he’s always bad-mouthin’ me, so why… Wait, is there something happening behind the scenes?
Nagi: ……
*Netaro glances at Nagi*
Netaro: It’s not me~
Kafka: Well, it seems it’s all thanks to Nagi ♪
Nagi: Huh? Me…?
Kafka: I’ve heard you've been doing some weeding there?
Daniel: Weeding? You’ve been doin’ that…?
Nagi: Yeah.
Yodaka: Hehe. You did?
Kafka: It looks like he was also one of the owners of that plot of land. He was apparently impressed by your careful weeding without the use of herbicide.
Toi: That means he prioritised us over our grandfather, who he’s known longer,,,? Wow.
Nagi: …So that vacant lot was the property Ryui had his eye on?
Yodaka: As expected of a florist – you’re a flower and plant professional.
Netaro: Great job, Gii!
Nagi: ……
Kafka: And that’s not all.
Momiji / Kaede: Meaning?
Kafka: He’s also someone important from the local government.
He asked if the Night Group would like to be involved with the planning for a large-scale event at the park. It’ll be a good opportunity to earn the trust of the locals.
Daniel: That sounds… like a really good offer, President.
Kafka: Naturally, we have no reason to decline. I’ve already agreed to take on the project, so I’ll hand out those documents.
Momiji / Kaede: It’s a rare opportunity to take part in such a big project! I can’t believe you were able to get us such an offer just by weeding. You’re amazing, Nagi-kun…!
*Nagi blushes*
Nagi: I’m good at weeding, but… I didn’t think… something like this would happen in my life.
Momiji / Kaede: (Nagi-kun is trembling from all the emotion… He’s really worked super hard since the ceremony…!)
Nagi-kun, what sort of event should we host?
Nagi: Huh? Uhh…
Raito: Hmm… I see. I’ve taken a quick read through the document.
If it’s an event of this scale, then something like “Oktoberfest” might be possible.
Netaro: Oktoberfest?
Daniel: It’s the world’s biggest beer festival held in Munich, Germany.
Yodaka: They have special Oktoberfest beer in huge tents over there, don’t they?
Raito: That’s right. It’s a well-known festival that’s been held in a few regions in JPN. I think it would be the perfect event.
Nagi: Yeah…! I was thinking October would be a good time to hold an event and beer tastes great when it’s drunk outside. I’ve actually never had it before but I know it tastes great and…
Toi: Ahaha! I had the same thoughts from the very beginning, too!
Netaro: Same! Raito is definitely Mr. Knowledgeable.
Ryui: Enough with the witty remarks.
Raito: Are you sure you want to go with Oktoberfest?
Nagi: Yeah. I can’t think of anything else.
Momiji / Kaede: ……
(Nagi-kun still goes along with other people’s opinions easily and there’s other aspects he can improve on, but…)
(He’s really positive right now and it shows.)
(I hope Nagi-kun and the other members of the Night Group work hard for the project and have a good time, as well… I should do everything I can to support them!)

relationship status: single
favourite colour: I love blue -- cerulean blue, ice blue, electric blue.
last song i listened to: "Dangerous" from Epic: The Musical
songs stuck in my head: "Would've, Could've, Should've" -- Taylor Swift
last thing i looked up: "Joseph Falaky Nagy The poetics of absence in Celtic tradition" (I know, incredibly glamorous and unpredictable.) (In my defense, I saw it on a German Wikipedia page and I needed to see if it was real or a Chat GPT thing since they HAVE created citations for him that aren't accurate before...as part of my ongoing hobby of Collecting Spurious Celtic Studies Citations from it.) (If anyone's in contact with him, don't tell him I didn't know that that was a real lecture of his.)
favourite food: Teriyaki chicken with rice, pork belly (either with ramen/rice or without), hot dog lattices, pavlova.
dream holiday: God it's hard, isn't it? Like, the problem with travelling a lot these days is that I get to travel to a lot of places, but I almost always want to return and see more and do more, so much bucket list is always growing longer.
I've dreamed of going to Egypt ever since I was a little girl; I've looked into all-inclusive group tour packages that wouldn't be *monstrously* expensive that would involve Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, and Abu Simbel. It would be expensive, more expensive than I'm used to paying without someone on the other end compensating me for my expenses, but it would be a once in a lifetime kind of expense for a once in a lifetime trip.
Obviously, my heart's in Ireland, but it's always a matter of..."Do I want a holiday there or do I want to live there?" I'm never living in San Francisco, New York, or Amsterdam. For professional reasons, I might have to live at Dublin at some point because there's so MUCH relating to the field there, but I don't think I'd *really* be happy there. But those are all places that I've either enjoyed staying in...or enjoyed aspects of (in the case of NYC and Dublin). With some places in Ireland, it's the reverse where I know that 2 weeks or even a month isn't enough and it'll never really be enough unless I'm actually living there and I'm working there. I love going, and I take every opportunity to go, and I'm always grateful for the opportunity, but it's also never really enough, either.
I'd love to go back to the Netherlands, visit my friends there, see more of the country besides a few cities, grab the Miffy merchandise I didn't get ahold of last time, down my weight in Stroopwafels. I'd love to visit Japan one of these days, I feel like that's almost an inevitability at this point.
I'd love to go back to Norway for more than 24 hours, as Cicely knows, I've been drooling over a specific fine dining place in Norway that is set on an actual fjord and has an underwater level (If I had unlimited money, I WOULD spend a week or two in a submarine exploring the deep sea, though I wouldn't be doing it with carbon fiber.) I'd love to go to the Viking Ship Museum, I'd love to explore some of the country outside of Oslo, especially since that *is* where my ancestors are from and, not to be like "I'm Actually™ Norwegian™", but...my paternal grandfather actually was in contact with his cousins from there; it isn't a MASSIVELY distant thing like, say, the German or Scottish side of the family. Even if that's the fucked up side of the family.
I'd love to spend a week or two scurrying around London, seeing all the museums, possibly making a private trip to Whitechapel to give my regards to the victims of the Whitechapel Murders. I'd love to spend a month or so scurrying around France, especially Paris, Versailles, and Brittany. Closer to home, I've dreamed for ages of getting to spend a night or two in St. Augustine and getting to see the city at night, since we always have to leave before I can do the ghost tours. I'd love to go to Colonial Williamsburg at least once before I move from the States to somewhere else.
But. I love traveling, even when it doesn't always love me, since I have notoriously bad luck with it, and there's a lot of the world I still want to get to, and there's a lot I still want to do and see.

Whether you're a digital nomad, a leisure traveler, or someone looking to break into the travel industry, here are the top ten travel trends that are set to dominate the next decade.
1. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Travel
With increased awareness about global environmental concerns, sustainable travel is not just a trend; it's becoming a necessity.
Stay: Eco-resorts and green hotels will see a surge in popularity.
Explore: Carbon-neutral tours and eco-friendly transportation will be in demand.
Consume: Local and organic cuisines will take center stage.
2. Microcations: The Rise of Shorter Getaways
Instead of annual two-week vacations, travelers are leaning towards multiple short breaks throughout the year.
Weekend Retreats: Quick weekend getaways to rejuvenate.
City Breaks: Exploring urban landscapes for short bursts of time.
3. Experiential and Immersive Travel
Travelers are increasingly looking for authentic experiences over traditional sightseeing.
Cultural Immersion: Staying with local families, participating in local rituals.
Learning Journeys: Trips focused on acquiring a new skill or hobby, like pottery in Japan or winemaking in Italy.
4. Tech-Integrated Travel
As technology continues its pervasive influence, it's set to redefine the travel landscape.
Augmented Reality (AR): Interactive AR city guides that overlay information on attractions.
Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI-driven personal travel assistants offering tailored recommendations and plans.
5. Health and Wellness Tourism
The nexus of travel and wellness is strengthening, with many looking to merge relaxation, health, and exploration.
Wellness Retreats: Resorts focusing on holistic well-being, offering programs like yoga, meditation, and detox.
Adventure Wellness: Combining physical activities like hiking, kayaking, or cycling with wellness retreats.
6. Solo Travel
Empowered by technology and a globalized world, more individuals are setting out to explore on their own.
Solo-friendly Accommodations: Hostels and hotels catering specifically to solo travelers.
Solo Travel Groups: Communities connecting solo travelers for shared experiences.
7. Space Tourism: The Final Frontier
What was once science fiction is becoming a reality. With companies like SpaceX and Virgin Galactic, space tourism is on the horizon.
Suborbital Flights: Short trips providing a few minutes of weightlessness and an unbeatable view of Earth.
Space Hotels: Plans for orbiting hotels offer a glimpse into a not-so-distant future.
8. Remote Workcations
The rise of remote work is blending the boundaries between work and vacation.
Digital Nomad Destinations: Places with robust internet connectivity, coworking spaces, and a conducive environment for work and relaxation.
Long-term Stays: Extended accommodation packages catering to remote workers.
9. Personalized and Tailored Travel
Generic, one-size-fits-all travel packages are giving way to highly personalized experiences.
AI-Powered Itineraries: Algorithms analyzing personal preferences to craft bespoke travel plans.
Interactive Apps: Travel apps that adapt recommendations based on real-time user feedback.
10. Under-tourism: Exploring the Unexplored
To combat overtourism, there’s a shift towards promoting less-visited destinations.
Alternative Destinations: Promoting areas similar to popular spots but less frequented.
Educated Travel: Encouraging tourists to visit in off-peak seasons or spreading out visits throughout the year.
Conclusion
The next decade promises to be an exciting era for travel, replete with innovation, deeper experiences, and renewed perspectives. It offers an opportunity for travelers to be more conscious, for businesses to be more innovative, and for destinations to be experienced in unprecedented ways.
Whether you're trekking into space, diving deep into local cultures, or taking a rejuvenating microcation, the future of travel is bright and expansive. As the famous saying goes, "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." It's springtime in Metro Vancouver when thickets of selfie sticks and tourists sprout beneath canopies of the region's famous cherry blossoms; Sussex Avenue in Burnaby, east of Vancouver, a group of five fashionably dressed women set up an iPhone on a tripod under the blooms.
One accessorizes with a green scarf, then pauses to give instructions to her friends, adjusting their angles just so; for the perfect shot. They're too busy to talk as they strike a series of poses, hands on hips.
Such scenes are familiar to Linda Poole, founder and creative director of the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival, which runs from April 1 to 23 and recalls the sight of tourists getting out of a tour bus at Queen Elizabeth Park, one of Vancouver's most popular locations for blossom viewing.
"And they are dancing under the blossoms, singing, modelling and posing. It's cute. I see that all the time," said Poole; Cherry blossoms have become a domestic and international tourist draw, with Chinese tour companies offering flower viewing packages for thousands of dollars, competing with more traditional locations such as Tokyo and Kyoto in Japan.
Edward Xie, manager of Richmond, B.C., travel agency First Express Travel, said his company advertises Vancouver flower viewing in international markets said guides pick up travellers from China and the U.S. at the airport and drive them around the city's best cherry blossom locations.
An eight-day, seven-night trip from China to Vancouver and Victoria promoted by First Express is dubbed the "two cities flower viewing" tour and costs 33,603 yuan, or $6,580, into a colourful world to enjoy flowers, watch whales and roam freely outdoors. Experience the romance brought by pink cherry blossoms and feel the vibe of April on Canada's West Coast," reads the advertisement.
Vancouver's blossoms have become renowned in East Asia, where the city's trees are through the Kitsilano neighbourhood in Mandarin. Like the English-language tours, it's fully booked that in the 1930s, the mayors of the Japanese cities of Yokohama and Kobe gave 500 cherry trees to the Vancouver Park Board to honour Japanese Canadians who served in the First World War.
Charlene Liu, president and CEO of Panasia Holidays, a Calgary-based tourism company, said cherry blossom viewing is among Chinese-speaking domestic tourists, many of them from Edmonton and Calgary, like a perfect combination to gaze upon the cherry blossoms while exploring the local culinary scene since Vancouver is also famous for food," said Liu in an interview conducted in Mandarin.
Cities like Kyoto and Washington, D.C., might have said many blossom tourists to Vancouver also have family in the city photos under the cherry trees is a universal thing loves it," said Xie.
It's not just tourists drawn to the blossoms that drift like pink snow when caught by a breeze resident Emmanuel S.T. Yu, enjoying a stroll under Burnaby's cherry blossoms with his wife Connie, said the flowers reminded him it was "a blessing" to live in B.C.
"It's my family's annual tradition to walk around to see the cherry blossom trees doing this for 11 years straight. We never get tired of it," said Yu in Mandarin flowers always easily cheer us up, reminding us how lucky we are to live here."
Jordan Liu, B.C.-based director of the tour guide training program with the Canadian Inbound Tourism Association of Asia Pacific, said there were more than 2,700 cherry blossom locations across Metro Vancouver has some favourites — Graveley Street on Vancouver's Eastside, West 22nd Avenue in Arbutus Ridge, Nelson Street in the downtown core, Yukon Street and outside Vancouver City Hall.
On West 22nd Avenue, Sophie Chan said she travelled on multiple buses to get to the neighbourhood from her home in Surrey. The slight rise and fall of the street make it possible to see a corridor of blooming trees stretching into the distance, a favourite location on Instagram said the secret to a good cherry blossom photo is patience — you need to wait for the right moment, with the right light, and the right wind to bring the petals fluttering down.
Retired mechanical engineer Kenneth Kwan, 84, was standing outside his home on Sussex Avenue in Burnaby, wearing a straw hat as he greeted people taking photos of the blossoms said the flowers made him feel alive after an illness confined him to hospital for more than six weeks last year.
"My friends from San Francisco will soon come to Vancouver to visit me. I will show them around the city, including the cherry blossoms in my neighbourhood," said Kwan laughter is the best."
