Dates: 23 July-8 August Time in Tokyo: BST +8 Coverage: Watch reside on BBC TELEVISION, BBC iPlayer, BBC Red Button and online; Listen on BBC Radio 5 Live, Sports Extra and Sounds; live text and video on BBC Sport site and app.
Thirteen-year-old Sky Brown made a memorable skateboarding bronze to end up being Great Britain’s youngest Olympic medallist as success in cruising and showjumping on Wednesday took Team GB’s gold medal tally to 15.
Ben Maher then won gold in the private showjumping occasion on board Explosion W after a significant six-horse jump-off.
Boxer Ben Whittaker protected a males’s light-heavyweight silver medal after Frazer Clarke took bronze in the males’s super-heavyweight department.
With 6 medals ensured in Tokyo this is Britain’s most effective Olympics in the boxing ring because 1920, when simply 12 countries participated.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Andre de Grasse won his very first gold and 5th Olympic medal in general as he revamped world champ Noah Lyles in the males’s 200m last.
Great Britain went up to 4th in the standings after winning 2 golds on Wednesday
The initially of GB’s 5 medals on day 12 originated from Brown, born a month prior to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. She fell on her very first 2 runs in the ladies’s park skateboarding last prior to publishing a rating of 56.47 to make the podium..
The teen changes Sarah Hardcastle as Britain’s youngest summertime Games medal winner – the swimmer was aged 15 years and 113 days when she won silver and bronze in Los Angeles at the 1984 Olympics.
At 13 years and 28 days, Brown likewise breaks Margery Hinton’s 93-year-old record as the nation’s youngest rival and claims Team GB’s very first skateboarding medal.
But there was a heartbreaking end to world champ Katarina Johnson-Thompson’s heptathlon medal hopes.
The 28-year-old, who was fighting to get rid of a left Achilles issue prior to the Games, sat 5th after 3 occasions however brought up with a best calf injury in the 200m and was disqualified from the race for leaving her lane.
Meanwhile, Jason Kenny began the defence of his Olympic sprint title with 3 success in the opening rounds, as team-mate Jack Carlin likewise advanced and Katy Marchant reached the ladies’s keirin quarter-finals.
How are GB doing?
Simon Gleave, head of sports analysis, Nielsen Gracenote stated: “Great Britain have closed the gap with the Rio and London Olympics and now have 48 medals after 12 days of competition compared to 49 in 2016 and 48 in 2012.
“However, at both of those Olympics, cruising, taekwondo and triathlon were still going on in the last 4 days of the Games so anticipate 2021 to fall back once again on overall medals won.”
Brown makes history in Tokyo
Brown beat the previous record of Team GB’s youngest Olympic medal winner by more than two years while also becoming the youngest competitor at a summer Games for her country.
Hinton was 13 years and 44 days when she swam at the Amsterdam Games in 1928 and that landmark stood for almost a century.
Until Wednesday, that is, when Brown – 16 days younger – began her women’s park skateboarding campaign at Ariake Urban Sports Park.
Had the Games not been postponed by a year, Brown would have lowered that summer record further, though figure skater Cecilia Colledge retains the overall accolade for Britain – she entered the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid aged 11.
Brown qualified for the final but fell during her opening two runs to set up a tense final attempt.
But the Japan-born teenager – who had a heavy fall in training last year that saw her fracture her skull, break her left arm and wrist, and suffer lacerations to her heart and lungs – delivered a score of 56.47 to climb into the bronze-medal position.
“This is unbelievable. It feels unbelievable, I’m so pleased to be here, I’m blessed,” said Brown, who added she would now “socialize with buddies and celebration”.
“I was absolutely bumped, I fell two times, that made the last run feel even much better. All the women are ripping it, it was ridiculous, it was a super-sick last.”
Japan’s Sakura Yosozumi, 19, won gold with a best score of 60.09, while 12-year-old compatriot Kokona Hiraki claimed silver with 59.04.
Mills contributes to medal haul
Britain’s excellent Olympics continued the water, with Mills and McIntyre’s success taking the nation’s sailing medal tally to five, of which three of those are gold.
The GB pair finished fifth in the 470 medal race, but their earlier performances meant it was enough to hold off silver medallists Poland and France in bronze.
Their celebrations were put on ice briefly after a protest was lodged by bronze-medallists France.
But 33-year-old Mills, one of Team GB’s flag bearers at the opening ceremony, did not have to wait long to have her third Olympic medal confirmed.
“It’s definitely mad,” said Mills. “Growing up, like a great deal of Olympians, I imagined being here one day and standing on top of the podium.
“To do it twice with Saskia [Clark] before and with Eilidh this time, I’ve had two incredible crews to sail with and I feel incredibly lucky.”
McIntyre, on the other hand, follows in the steps of her dad, Mike, who won gold in the star class at Seoul in 1988.
Earlier, Britain’s Chris Grube and Luke Patience ended up 5th total in the males’s 470.
Maher holds his nerve in jump-off
Maher’s showjumping gold offers the British equestrian group a 5th Olympic medal in Tokyo, equalling their record haul attained in London.
It follows gold for the eventing group and Tom McEwen’s private eventing silver, plus group dressage bronze and Charlotte Dujardin’s private dressage bronze.
Maher, 38, was thrust into a six-horse jump-off and finished his run in 37.85 to pip Sweden’s Peder Fredricson by 17-hundredths of a 2nd, with the Netherlands’ Maikel van der Vleuten taking bronze.
It is a 2nd Olympic medal for Maher after winning gold in the group leaping occasion at London 2012.
“I’m getting married in a couple of weeks and that makes this all the more special – but my fiancee knows she has to share me with Explosion,” he stated.
Boxing success continues for Team GB
Whittaker stated his aspirations prior to Tokyo 2020 were to claim Olympic success and end up being the mayor of Wolverhampton.
His ritualistic dreams are yet to be figured out, however the 24-year-old returns house curtained in Olympic flatware after being edged out of gold by Cuba’s Arlen Lopez.
Whittaker lost the light-heavyweight last on a split choice as Lopez included the title to the middleweight gold he won at Rio 2016.
“You don’t win silver, you lose gold,” stated a psychological Whittaker. “I’m very disappointed with myself, I didn’t perform well. Of course, he’s a class operator – two-time Olympic gold medallist now but I’m very disappointed. I feel like a failure.
“Wolverhampton’s mayor, bless him, did a little video for me wanting me luck, he stated that if I get the gold, I get the chain – I didn’t get the gold so he can keep it for a bit.”
Whittaker’s silver came shortly after Clarke took a super-heavyweight bronze.
The 29-year-old was stopped in his semi-final against Uzbekistan’s Bakhodir Jaloolov after a cut he suffered in the previous round reopened above his eye.
Britain have already guaranteed two further medals, with Galal Yafai in the flyweight semi-finals on Thursday before Lauren Price’s middleweight semi-final bout on Friday.
What else took place on day 12?
The GB ladies’s hockey group saw their title defence concerned an end as they lost 5-1 in their semi-final against the Netherlands at Oi Hockey Stadium.
They face India in the bronze-medal match on Friday.
Britain’s Shauna Coxsey missed out on a place in the final as sport climbing made its Olympic debut.
On the track, Laura Muir reached the 1500m final with a run of 4:00.73 and Andrew Pozzi progressed to Thursday’s men’s 110m hurdles final.
Lizzie Bird finished ninth in the women’s 3000m steeplechase in a British record 9:19.68, while Jodie Williams earned a place in the women’s 400m final and Nick Miller finished sixth in the men’s hammer.
Alice Dearing, 24, made history as the first black swimmer to represent Britain at an Olympics, finishing 19th in the women’s 10km marathon event.
Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Lois Toulson reached the women’s 10m platform semi-finals, qualifying in seventh and 10th, respectively.
American Sydney McLaughlin reeled in rival Dalilah Muhammad to win gold in an extremely quick ladies’s 400m obstacles – and broke her own world record at the same time.

Yuri on Ice Timeline
Alright, so I spent all last night (literally) checking dates and confirming schedules because I’m in that deep. There’s no saving me now. And I thought I’d go ahead and break down the timeline I have come to the conclusion is as close to YOI canon as possible.
There are gaps where I don’t have information to substantiate what happened - and if and when Season 2 comes out or as I’m going through series 1 with a fine-toothed comb , I should find more I shall add it in.
**Edited 1/14/17 to include new information**
**NOTE: (4/23/17) These dates/years are incorrect, but the order they happened (While not infallible) should be pretty close. We have been given NEW NEW information placing the China Cup in 2015, which shifts everything forward by a year. Let me reiterate that I am not an expert, and that YOI takes place in an alternate universe so as to avoid copyright infringement and lawsuits.**
Speculation will be in Italics.
Alright, so here we go!
----------------------------
December 25,1985 1984: Victor is born!
November 29,1989 1988: Yuuri is Born!
March 1, 1998 Yuri Plisestky is born!
1998 Makkachin is born!
1997 Minami Kenjiro is born!
1991-1997: Yuuri begins skating
Can’t really tell how old he is, but he looks to be somewhere between 4 and 6 years old which is pretty consistent with when skaters start.
2001: Feb 26-March 2 Junior World Championships Sofia, Bulgaria
At 16 Victor Nikiforov wins Gold at the Junior World Championships
2001-2003: Victor continues to compete , Yuuri’s Junior Debut
whether Victor competes at the Junior or Senior level is unclear. A skater can continue to compete at the junior level until the age of 19, after which they must switch to Senior division.
competitors must be at least 13 years old and not older than 19 by July 1 of that year.
However, we can guess that since Yuuri is aiming to skate at Victor’s level, it’s likely that Victor was already competing at the Senior level by the time Yuuri made it to the Juniors.

Yuuri makes the decision to take a break from competition and focuses on school.
Yuuri doesn’t imply that he breaks ties with Celestino until after he fails at the 2013 Japanese National Championships (likely due to lack of dedication to skating since his failure at the 2012 Japanese National Championships. Yuuri states that he had lost his love of skating and he was looking to regain that by copying Victor’s routine after returning home in March 2014)

Phichit moves back to Thailand to train
2014: October Southern Regional Championships, Japan Yuuri’s Grand Return
**Note: In episode 1, Yuuri explains that Southern Regional Championships happen in October - maybe this is the actual competition we’re looking at, rather than All-Japan which happens in December and would have made it impossible for Yuuri to qualify for the 2014-2015 Grand Prix Final.
Looking at a map of Japan, it appears that all three prefectures are in the south, so I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the championship titled “ The Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu Championship” is referring to the qualifier in October.

Victor announces his return to the competitive circuit for next season
2014: Mid December Yuuri moves to St. Petersburg with Victor
------------ Here is where it all becomes speculation but based on Kubo-san’s adherence to the real life skating championship schedules, here is a list of stuff we may see in Season 2 --------
December 2014-March 2015 Yuuri and Victor training for upcoming WFSC in St. Petersburg with guidance from Yakov
Victor learns how to be a better coach
Victor struggles to get back into competitive condition and create a new routine for the WFSC in just a few months
Yuuri gets world-class instruction from both Victor and Yakov as an assistant coach (You bet Yakov isn’t going to just stand by and let Victor mess up a perfectly good world-class skater out of sheer inexperience as a coach)
Yurio struggles with constant gross-out (omg Dads are embarrassing) BUT finds that fighting spirit and determination to continue to grow as a skater with Victor and Yuuri there to keep his ego in check.
Our boys grow closer together as a couple
Yuuri’s confidence grows as a skater and this late bloomer begins to show tf up. Boy gets TURNT.
Friendly rivaly/ Frenemies relationship between Yuuri and Yurio develops
March 23-29 2015 World Figure Skating Championships, Shanghai China
Victor returns to the ice as competitor and coach
Yuuri competes for the first time at the same level as Victor
We see a return of several skaters which may include Giacometi and Seong-gil, as we saw them in the 2014 World Figure Skating Championships placing 2nd and 3rd behind Victor.
Yurio likely also competing (expect shenanigans) - if he isn’t competing he’ll likely be there to heckle at the very least.
April - August 2015 Hardcore Training and Prep for the Grand Prix Final 2014-2015 season
October - November GPF Qualifiers Senior Division
Oct 23-25 Skate America Oct 30-Nov 1 Skate Canada Nov 6-8 Cup of China Nov 13-15 Eric Lumbard France Nov 20-22 Rostelecom Cup Russia Nov 27-29 NHK Trophy
Our boys struggle against a super busy schedule and potentially having to be apart while they both compete in qualifiers.
We get confirmation that they are incapable of surviving without each other.
December 10-13 Grand Prix Final Barcelona Spain
I expect to see all three of our boys at the GPF.
The REAL Dance-off Battle begins
Yuuri wins Gold against some probably staggering odds.

Nose bleeds and bodies everywhere
((and then we hit utter fantasy ... ))

Purple Heart Day 2017: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know
Article shared from heavy.com
August 7 marks Purple Heart Day, a special day to honor the lives and sacrifices of the men and women who have put their lives on the line for the U.S. The special award is the oldest military honor, starting in 1932. However, George Washington presented a similar award, called the Badge of Military Merit, on August 7, 1782.
It’s estimated that over 1.8 million Purple Hearts have been awarded since it was established. The award is presented to military service-members who are wounded or killed in action.
Here’s a look at the history of Purple Heart Day and the Purple Heart.
1. The Military Order of the Purple Heart Established August 7 as Purple Heart Day in 2014
GettyA U.S. Army honor guard holds a tray with three Purple Heart medals during a Purple Heart ceremony June 9, 2015 at George Washington’s Mount Vernon in Mount Vernon, Virginia.
Prior to 2014, Purple Heart Day was often marked on several different dates. In 2014, the Military Order of the Purple Heart designated August 7 as Purple Heart Day.
August 7 is the anniversary of the first Badge of Military Merit awards presented by George Washington on August 7, 1782. At the time, Washington was still commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. According to the Institute of Heraldry, the award was presented to three non-commissioned officers: Sergeant Daniel Bissell of the 2nd Connecticut Regiment of the Continental Line; Sergeant William Brown of the 5th Connecticut Regiment of the Continental Line, and Sergeant Elijah Churchill of the 2nd Continental Dragoons.
After the Revolutionary War ended, the Badge of Military Merit was not used again. To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth in 1932, it was revived under War Department General Orders No. 3, dated February 22, 1932. From that point on, the Purple Heart was established to honor those killed or injured during service from April 5, 1917 to the present.
2. The Purple Heart Was Designed by Elizabeth Will, an Army Heraldic Specialist
GettyThe Purple Heart.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the idea for a “Badge of Military Merit” revival was first proposed by General Charles Summerall in October 1927. In January 1928, a formal proposal was drawn up, but it wasn’t until January 1931 that General Douglas MacArthur decided to push for the medal again. Elizabeth Will, an Army heraldic specialist, was assigned to come up with the design for the medal, based on general guidelines.
The Purple Heart was officially established on February 22, 1932, the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth.
The Purple Heart features George Washington’s profile on the obverse, in front of a purple, heart-shaped field. On the reverse, it reads “For Military Merit.” “The 1 11/16 inch medal is suspended by a purple cloth, 1 3/8 inches in length by 1 3/8 inches in width with 1/8-inch white edges,” the VA notes.
As The New York Times notes, Will also designed the Distinguished Flying Cross, the official Vice Presidential flag and other official government designs. She retied in 1965 and died in 1975.
3. At First, the Purple Heart Was Only Awarded to Army & Army Air Corps Personnel
youtube
The Purple Heart requirements have changed since 1932. According to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, which is located in New Windsor, New York, the Purple Heart was created exclusively for Army and Army Air Corps personnel at first. In addition, the award wasn’t presented posthumously to family members.
In December 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed that, signing an executive order to include Navy branches. He also made the award available to any military member killed on or after December 7, 1941.
Another executive order signed by President Harry S. Truman in November 1952 expanded the posthumous Purple Heart award to include members of the Navy, Coast Guard or Marine Corps killed on or after April 5, 1917. The Army and Air Force are later included in 1962, when another executive order made it possible for family members to apply for a posthumous Purple Heart.
President Ronald Reagan signed an executive order in 1984 to award the Purple Heart to service-members wounded or killed during acts of terror or during a peacekeeping mission outside the U.S. In 1993, a bill was passed to include wounds or death resulting from accidental “friendly fire.”
The most recent change to Purple Heart eligibility came in February 2015, when the Department of Defense said those wounded or killed by certain kinds of domestic terrorist activities can receive the award.
4. It’s Rumored That the Military Is Still Awarding Medals Made in 1945 in Preparation for a Planned Invasion of Japan
youtube
One rumor about the Purple Heart is that the Department of Defense made a large stockpile of the awards in 1945 in preparation for “Operation Downfall,” a planned land invasion of the main Japanese islands. The military estimated that there would be between 1.7 and 4 million casualties. The operation never happened, since it was decided to drop the atomic bomb instead and Japan surrendered.
As Stars and Stripes noted in 2010, historian D.M. Giangreco said there were Purple Hearts made during World War II that were still being presented.
“Time and combat will continue to erode the WW II stock, but it’s anyone’s guess how long it will be before the last Purple Heart for the invasion of Japan is pinned on a young soldier’s chest,” Giangreco told Stars and Stripes.
Defense Logistics Agency spokeswoman Mimi Schirmacher told Stars and Stripes in 2010 that at that as recently as 1985, the military had 120,000 refurbished World War II Purple Hearts. She said it was possible that there were still some being given out.
Schirmacher said the DLA has ordered 34,000 new Purple Hearts since 1976, including 21,000 ordered in 2008 alone.
5. President Trump Awarded a Purple Heart to Sgt. 1st Class Alvaro Barrientos in His First Trip to Walter Reed
youtube
In April 2017, President Donald Trump presented a Purple Heart award to Sgt. 1st Class Alvaro Barrientos during his first trip to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as president. As NPR notes, Barrientos served in Afghanistan and had his leg amputated below the knee after he was wounded on March 17.
“When I heard about this I wanted to do it myself. So congratulations,” Trump told Barrientos, who was joined by his wife Tammi. “Tremendous.”
According to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, it’s estimated that there have been 1.8 million Purple Hearts presented since 1932. The Hall of Honor notes that there hasn’t been a consistent record of Purple Hearts, so the exact number is unknown.
