Week 2: Day 6- Monday 18th February
11:30am- Meeting with music mentor Jan Hendrickse about our experiences of Edinburgh. We discussed about ideas for the piece, various ideas were passed around involving incorporating Scottish folk tunes and improvisation, however there were concerns that we would be appropriating the Scottish culture by misusing Scottish folk tunes for the sake of creating a soundscape of Scotland. Instead we needed to explore our own experiences of Edinburgh and translate that to music, minimising the use of Scottish folk tunes.
1:30pm- Lunch
2:30pm- Research in the library. Whilst the others focused on the history of Scotland and the language, I focused on Scottish poetry exploring themes of identity and freedom. An excellent poem was “Freeing the Unicorn” by Alastair McIntosh.
4pm- We met up to gather our research, originally deciding to base the piece on certain moments in Scottish history focusing on reformation and freedom, however a couple of us had a problem with this idea of attempting to represent a compressed history of Scotland and it’s strive for freedom in a 10-20 minute piece.
SUM UP: Started to prepare the piece itself, focusing on the context and concept of the piece
