A quick post today about a person I’m endlessly fascinated with: Rep. Ritchie Torres (NY-15). Rep. Torres has emerged as the “one of the most outspoken congressional supporters of Israel,” according to the New York Daily News. His love of Israel and his hatred of its critics, namely those in the so-called Squad and Democratic Socialists of America, is evidenced in his frequent petty, screedy Twitter battles with both. 

A survey of his public statements—from his congressional website, Facebook page, and Twitter account—reveal a man whose most important topic isn’t the rampant poverty that makes his congressional district the poorest in the country, but the nominal wellbeing and arming of Israel. 

In public statements since coming into office in Jan. 2021, Torres has mentioned “Israel” 337 times and “poverty” 143 times. On his official website there are 202 mentions of Israel and 77 mentions of poverty. On Twitter there are 73 tweets about Israel and 12 about poverty. On Facebook, there are 62 mentions of Israel and 54 mentions of poverty.

According to Food Research and Action Center’s figures, using data from 2017, New York’s 15th district is by far the poorest of the 435 congressional districts in the US. 36.2% of Torres’ constituency lives below the poverty line. For reference, the second and third poorest districts in the country, Michigan 15 and Kentucky 5, have a poverty rate of roughly 29 percent, or 7 percentage points lower than the NY-15. 

This isn’t to say Torres doesn’t talk about poverty at all, just that he does so way less than he talks about Israel. He’s campaigned for Democrats to pass the Child Income Tax Credit that was central to reducing childhood poverty. He’s proposed bills to increase housing vouchers and “protect” Medicare for Seniors—fairly standard liberal Democrat fare, though nothing particularly progressive or subversive. Torres ostensibly supported a Medicare for All bill in 2021, but never posted on social media or issued a press release about it.  

Torres received the 7th highest donation out of 435 members of Congress in 2022 from Pro-Israel PACs, or roughly $291,961. His ability—and willingness—to attract large donors extends to other sectors as well. When he first ran in the highly competitive 2019 Democratic primary, Torres took an early donor lead in a crowded field fueled largely by real estate interests that, according to The City, sought Torres’ help turning the Mott Haven neighborhood into “the next Williamsburg”:

Gasp, he barely looks different! Hawu'li's actually only ever had one hairstyle change - from the starter hairstyle to the one he has now - during which I also swapped his original forehead dot to the red makeup on the outer corners of his eyes. I did have him cosplaying Popola/Devola for like a month or two back when Tower released, but other than that his looks have been the same ever since that fateful day in post-HW patches where I got annoyed about his mullet clipping through his healer outfit (￣▽￣)"

Don't think I ever posted these here, but yeah I had a full Popola/Devola cosplay going on for couple of months after getting that top on patch day haha. Red hair looked pretty nice on him, but wearing anything blue felt weird while I had it, so sometime around when Paglth'an dropped I swapped back to his normal hair.

The True Oldest Screenshot I have of this game, taken Sept. 29 2019 while waiting for Nana (brd) to finish a quest so we could go do Praetorium for the first time (we started playing somewhere around mid-august). I didn't even know how to hide HUD back then, so pls ignore the uh, very weirdly set skill bars.

First meeting with the bratty red cat + first time I could measure Hawu'li next to the pretty blue elf (Dec 4th and Nov 26th). There's like 5+ pics from the CT questline of just... me parking Hawu'li next to G'raha and trying to mimic his pose lmao. I wasn't even shipping them back then, I just found it very fun that they are the same height + share the same face base (and tail).

Very zoomed in since this was from a cutscene, but the last pic I have of Hawu'li with his old hair AND literally the only shot I ever got where his little forehead dot is visible. His bangs covered it most of the time, so I chose to take it away when changing his hair. (Dec 4th, according to screenshot dates I changed his hair less than week later)

Some of the few good shots left of Maito (Jan 19th 2020 / Feb 15th / Feb 18th), my first alt who actually finished MSQ before Hawu'li (with whom I was waiting for friends). She no longer exists at all: she was fantasia'd to Yusui (her older brother) sometime during ShB patches, who in turn was later fantasia'd to Einn sometime after EW gave us bunnyboys. I sort of miss her sometimes (Einn has a retainer made with her characer creation save data but that's not quite same), and have thought doing some silly stuff and maybe merging her and Momo in some way, but we'll see if I ever actually go through with that.

1. October has the most birthdays, with a total of 19 warframes. I reckon this is because the game came out with 8 frames on October 25th.

2. January has the least, with only 3 warframes. I reckon this is because everybody is doing their New Year's resolutions and wouldn't want to waste time trying to craft a new warframe.

3. December has the most prime warframes, at 7 total, but May has the highest concentration at ~71% prime. I was born in May so I was desperate for a fun fact.

4. The wiki said there was 103 warframes, but I only found 102 so I made a fake one to get the right number. I hope I don't still think that's a funny joke tomorrow morning, and then spend several weeks learning about character design just so I can 3D model it.

i know people's favorite source of information seems to be tiktok/twitter at the moment but for what's it worth, i'm gonna share a compilation that i wrote down for a different website on why israelis have such a strong distrust of the ceasefire option, with links to wikipedia for every section. NOTE (since whataboutism seems to be everyone's favorite tactic the last 2-3 weeks) that this is NOT about palestinian civilians' basic right to safety from military attacks, and humanitarian aid, as well as the need for a free palestinian state. this is about previous ceasefire attempts during the military clashes between israel and gaza in the last 15 years.

The 2008-2009 Gaza War (known in Israel as Operation Cast Lead/מבצע עופרת יצוקה): On January 17th, 2009, Israeli PM Olmert declared a unilateral ceasefire, starting at 02:00 am later that night. Terrorist groups in Gaza have fired 15 rockets into Israel in the following hours, until at about 14:30 Hamas et al have declared their own ceasefire. On Jan 20th, fire was shot at IDF soldiers withdrawing from the Gaza strip (without any damages or injuries); early on Jan 21st, IDF had completed its withdrawal from the strip; on Jan 27th, 1 IDF soldier was killed and 3 were injured from an IED explosion near Kisufim - an Al-Qaeda affiliated terrorist group claimed responsibility for the event, which in turn prompted IAF attacks on tunnels in the strip, which in turn resulted in some rocket fire from Gaza into Israel over the following few days, which also prompted IAF attacks. March 2012 Clashes (Operation Returning Echo/מבצע הד חוזר): an Egypt-mediated ceasefire was declared on March 12th; despite that, rocket fire from Gaza into Israel continued (despite PIJ declaring that they're committed to the ceasefire, FWIW). The ongoing rockets have led to the suspension of educational activities on March 15th-16th in certain cities and areas in Israel. The occasional rocket fire from Gaza continued until March 29th. The 2014 Gaza War (Operation Protective Edge/מבצע צוק איתן): officially started on July 8th. Already by July 15th, Egypt had suggested a ceasefire, which Israel agreed to; despite that, terrorist organizations in Gaza have continued their attacks, and Israel had resumed fighting as well. On July 20th, Hamas requested a 2-hour humanitarian ceasefire following a particularly difficult battle; IDF agreed to that, and Hamas broke it after 40 minutes. Despite that, IDF had prolonged the ceasefire on its side due to a request by the Red Cross. Starting July 26th, several ceasefires have been mediated by international mediators. Israel had continuously agreed to them and Hamas had continuously broke them. The first significant breaking of the ceasefire by Hamas resulted in the killing of 3 IDF soldiers by Hamas terrorists and the kidnapping of the body of one soldier, Lt. Hadar Goldin (who was also killed in the same incident). Then followed another string of unstable ceasefires that were all also broken by Hamas; until August 19th, when Hamas broke ceasefire by shooting a wide barrage of rockets at Israel, prompting IDF to fully resume fighting. (During this phase of the war, Hamas had also publicly executed over 21 Palestinians that were accused of collaborating with Israel.) November 2019 Clashes (Operation Black Belt/מבצע חגורה שחורה): following 48 hours of fighting, a ceasefire was announced on November 15th, 5:30 am. Gazan terrorists have broken the ceasefire several times by firing rockets into Israel - at 11:00 am, 5:30 pm, and 10:10 pm that very same day - which prompted IDF to attack PIJ targets in return. During the night of November 16th the ceasefire was broken again by Gazan rocket fire into Israel, to which IAF responded by attacking Hamas targets. (Wikipedia in Hebrew/Wikipedia in English)

May 2021 Clashes (Operation Guardian of the Walls/מבצע שומר חומות): hurray! We've found one time where a ceasefire was announced AND actually kept by both Hamas and IDF. August 2022 Clashes (Operation Breaking Dawn/מבצע עלות השחר): on August 7th, following media reports of an upcoming ceasefire at 8:00 pm, PIJ shot dozens of rockets into Israel at starting 7:40 pm and going until after 8:00 pm. At 9:00 pm, media had reported that PIJ agreed to a ceasefire starting at 11:30 pm, which was later officially confirmed by both sides; meanwhile rocket fire from Gaza was still ongoing, and kept going until 23:50 pm. May 2023 Clashes (Operation Shield and Arrow/מבצע מגן וחץ): around 8 pm, May 13th, media had started reporting that a ceasefire was planned for 10 pm. Starting at 9:40 and up until 11:11 pm, 37 rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel. IDF reacted by attacking PIJ rocket launchers. The Purer the More Stable

Let’s first look at a natural phenomenon. According to a report by the British “Daily Mail” on January 22, 2019, in the attic of a resident named Roderick Cooper in Alaska, there are two bottles of water in the freezing weather of minus 22 degrees Celsius, which are still in liquid state (video shows).

It is scientifically explained that this is the phenomenon of “supercooling”, which means that when a liquid is very pure without impurities, the freezing speed will become very slow, and the liquid will continue to remain in the liquid state, without ice crystals, and will not freeze into solid, even it is 22 degrees Celsius below zero or colder.

Let’s look at another phenomenon. There are many kinds of gemstones in nature. No matter what kind of gemstones, their value and price are related to their purity. The higher the purity, the higher the value and the price. This also applies to people, the purer and more beautiful they are, the more likable they are. The more complex they are, the more they will be hated by others.

To sum up, we can come to the conclusion that the purer a thing is, the less susceptible it is to external factors, just like the rare gas helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon in the periodic table chemical elements. Similarly, the purer a thing is, the higher its stability is. It can also be concluded that the higher the purity of things, the easier for it to get the love of the environment, that is the care and cherishment of the environment.

Hence, we can understand why Jesus Christ said that if we want to enter the kingdom of the Greatest Creator, we must become a child, and we can also understand why Lao Tzu taught us that we must “return to the state of infancy” if we want to unite with the Tao. Because only by returning to the state of infancy, becoming a child, can you be qualified to enter the kingdom of heaven.

Let’s extend this principle. If you want to enter heaven, the key is to become pure. Only pure things can show their nature. Nature is Buddha, nature is celestial. Showing nature is equivalent to becoming celestial and Buddha. Celestial and Buddha will definitely enter heaven. Babies and children are very pure, and what they expose are completely nature. So even a ferocious wolf will not hurt them but will love them. Therefore, whether one can enter heaven or not has nothing to do with learning, knowledge and wisdom, how many classic books you have learned; it has nothing to do with religion, how many good deeds you have done, how much truth you have understood and spread; it has nothing to do with kowtowing, burning incense or making pilgrimage. The key is whether a LIFE is pure.

In this way, the content of self-cultivation and self-refinement is very simple. What we need to do is to let ourselves become pure, “return to the state of infancy”.

So, we know that the more complicated people are, the farther away they are from heaven.

“The purer, the more stable”, is it a “universal” law?

Let’s analyze it. Most people will have friends. At the beginning, the friendship is very pure, so they can maintain a friendly relationship. But gradually, the friendly relationship cannot be maintained, why? The reason is that the friendship is becoming more and more impure. If interests are added to friendship, the friendship will become complicated and impure, so it can no longer be maintained. Many people set up companies and business. At the beginning, the company developed smoothly, but as time passed, the company began to decline and close. What is the reason? The reason is that the company has become impure. Some companies began to marry politics, some companies began to get involved in the real estate business, some companies began to get involved in the stock market, some industrial companies became interested in the cultural field, and some companies that only provided food began to engage in business of restaurants, breeding and planting. Although they are consistent with the content of providing food, their scope of business is different after all, so they will eventually decline. Let’s look at the social fields. Romania, Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, Venezuela, Vietnam, and China, all are socialism. The result is they all have almost collapsed. China’s socialism is also on the verge of collapse. The reason is that none of them is pure. Socialism is socialism, if you mix it with the market, family and party interest, and corruption, it will surely collapse. Prue socialism is definitely superior to capitalism, but if you make the socialism rather impure, how can it be better than capitalism? Collapse is inevitable, because it violates the rule of “the purer, the more stable”.

“Flies always find the cracked eggs”, why? Because if there is no crack on the egg, it can keep relatively pure, so flies won’t bite it. Once there is crack on the egg, the egg cannot keep pure, flies will certainly come to bite.

In the process of founding Lifechanyuan, I found out that people with more complex thoughts are more likely to be disturbed by external factors and gradually leave, while those with simpler thoughts are more likely to remain. This fact also proves the rule that “the purer the more stable”.

Thus, we can get another conclusion, for a person, the more knowledgeable, the more complex the thinking, the greater the ability, the more mindful and smarter, the more experienced, the more deeply involved in society, the more flexible, the more he is unreliable, because he or she violates the rule of “the purer, the more stable”. He might vow to you today, and part ways with you tomorrow.

Thus we can get one more conclusion that the more complex one is, the most silly and stupid the person is in the world.

It is with incredible excitement, and great humility, to let you know you that my husband and I will be running the Boston Marathon on April 15th, 2019!

We will be endeavoring on this journey to help raise awareness and funds for a cause that we believe in wholeheartedly. Dream Big! Is a 501c(3) supporting, outfitting, supplying, encouraging and providing opportunities for young girls who, due to economic circumstances, are unable to participate. This incredible organization has provided over $200,000 worth of sports equipment, uniforms, and footwear in such sports as track and field, volleyball, soccer, double dutch, etc. The scholarship programs at DreamBig! have allowed young female athletes to attend basketball college showcases, soccer and volleyball camps, dance classes, and gymnastics lessons, and hundreds of girls attended Dream Big! Sports Clinics in partnership with local college sports teams. DreamBig! helps move mountains for young girls and this speaks to mine and my husband's hearts. As a kid, soccer was MY LIFE. I was about 6 years old when I joined my first team. In those days, it wasn't soccer as much as it was bunch ball and running around as fast as you can and kicking the ball in whatever direction you happened to be facing. But, even in those early days, before I completely understood the rules and the strategy, before the hours and days and weeks and years that I would ultimately spend on the field, I learned some of the most important and valuable lessons that I’ve carried into my adult life. One thing I learned is that you aren't going to "win" all of the time. But, I found that the lessons you learn from all of the setbacks along the way will provide the opportunity to learn what you can do to improve. There will be another play, another shot, another game. As cliche as it may sound, It’s not how many times you fall, it’s how many times you get back up. I discovered the importance of practice, dedication, and sacrifice. I learned that the play doesn’t matter as much as the game, the game doesn’t matter as much as the season, and the season doesn’t matter as much as the experience. Most importantly of all, I learned the importance of supporting your teammates, AND your opponents, and I found out just how much their reciprocal support meant as well... No matter what was happening in the world around me, I always knew that I had a team behind my back. Sports helped me learn that I needed and wanted to work hard for my teammates, and that winning the game didn’t, and DOESN’T, happen alone. I played soccer all the way through high school and college, and I still enjoy playing it with my children. I don’t know the person that I would be if I hadn’t had the chance to learn and grow from my teammates, coaches, and the love that I have for the sport. It can take a team to push you and support you beyond what you THINK you can accomplish. I am forever grateful for the support and motivation I received growing up in group sports, and I’m thrilled and humbled for the opportunity to pay that forward, and try to help provide other young ladies with the chance to support, and be supported by, their friends and teammates. When I cross that finish line, I will have a huge smile on my face, not only because I was able to achieve a life goal, but I will have crossed that finish line knowing I was able to impact thousands of young female athletes. - Gen

Growing up in Texas, sports were a big part of my life. I played basketball and football into high school, at which point I started to focus my time and efforts on drama and theater.

The lessons I learned from sports were numerous. I learned discipline, sacrifice, determination, focus, camaraderie, loyalty, and more. Sports are where I first learned what it was like to have a team around you to support you when you were falling, and celebrate alongside you when you were soaring. I learned the importance of being a gracious winner and a classy loser. I’ve tried to carry these lessons into adulthood, and I am able to reflect back on these lessons in my day to day life. Along the way, learned the value of “incremental improvement”. If I can learn from my mistakes and better myself, then I can be a better and more productive human being and teammate in the long run. It’s unfortunate, but also no secret, that male sports receive more attention and support from the general public. The athletes are paid more. The events are televised more regularly and on more channels, etc... I would love to take some part in raising awareness and increasing availability for girls, young and old, to learn some of the invaluable things that I was fortunate to learn growing up. Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing our story with you as we train for The Boston Marathon - one of the most grueling and demanding courses in the US. It’s going to be hard. It’s going to hurt. But it’s going to be worth it. Here is the important part: we consider you our teammates and challenge you take this journey with us. You don’t have to run a marathon, you don’t even have to run around the block - you CAN virtually train with us (we would love that!), but you can also offer encouragement and help by spreading the word about Dream Big! on social media. I FINISHED MY FIRST DRAFT!!!!!!!!!

I'm really excited to be here, to have finally gotten this entire story that's been swirling around in my head since 2019, into one doc

am i thrilled with how it reads in its current state? no, not really

but am i thrilled that it exists? absolutely !

finishing the first draft was just something that had to be done. i think i was feeling anxious that i hadn't earned the ending. so on the 15th, i just kind of. knocked myself out of it and ended it. i wrote what i imagined the ending to look like. in previous writing sessions, there had been a lot of waffling.

so, since i finished, i've naturally gravitated away from the WIP. i'm still thinking about it now, actually probably thinking about it moreso now that the draft is complete.

my plan for drafting going forward is:

my word count is currently just short of 41k. my goal end word count is between 60k and 65k. for reference, this is about the word count of tender is the flesh, which is one of my fav horror books.

the draft now is pretty much: this is the story, this is the order of things, this is what happens. there is so much room for c and d and more plots; there is so much room for character enhancement and technique.

make it scary

speaking of horror - i just don't think it's scary enough! and that being said, i am really questioning how to make a book/piece of writing scary. so, to work on towards it making scary, i think i'll be reading and examining a lot of horror in depth this year. recommendations are more than welcome!

make it good

finally, i need to take everything extra i write, and i need to make it good.

i hope to fucking god that i can make this, in the end, something breathtaking and thoughtful and haunting. i don't know if i'm capable of it. but i can hope.

i have big hopes of publishing before i'm 30, but i have bigger hopes of being a successful horror writer. getting a book together before 30 will mean nothing if i haven't packed in every ounce of goodness into it that i can.

as i'm finishing this leg of this creative project, i'm feeling expansive. i'm going to be launching a newsletter next month called create & consume - a round up of my two passions: creating (food and lit) and consuming (food and lit). i'll be including recipes, food recs, book recs, pieces of writing, thoughts on writing techniques, and meta commentary on consuming and creating. and more. i hope if you've read this far into this post, you may want to join me along in this, too. :)
