Mysterious Musicians #2: Hat (Gorgoroth)
Jan Åge Solstad, better known by his stage name Hat (meaning “Hatred” in Norwegian), was the vocalist for black metal act Gorgoroth from 1992 to 1995. Hat lent his unusual, inhuman shrieking to the band’s oft-praised debut album, Pentagram, then performed (in a VERY different vocal style) on one half of the followup, Antichrist, with vocalist Thomas “Pest” Kronenes taking up the other half.
Why is he mysterious?
After recording his half of Antichrist, Hat seems to have completely and utterly vanished. Unlike the previous entry in this series, Alan Moore, who sort of slowly fizzled out of existence, Hat seems to have existed one day and disappeared the next. No other bands, no more recordings, nothing. Hat’s reasons for leaving Gorgoroth are entirely unclear; there is no mention of him losing interest in music or the black metal scene, no history of a falling out with the other band members, not even the smallest anecdote to BEGIN to build theories off of. What makes this most curious is the fact that he left halfway through the recording of an album, which rarely happens even with in-fighting between band members or loss of interest in music, so whatever made the legendary vocalist depart from the band seems to have been abrupt or sudden.
Speculation runs wild online. In just one thread, one poster claims Hat committed suicide, another claims he had some sort of vague accident at home, another says he owns a bar in Bergen, and another even says that Gaahl claims to still be in contact with Hat (a claim I’m pretty skeptical of since the two were never in the band at the same time; it’d be like Jason Newsted keeping in contact with Ron McGovney). None of Hat’s bandmates have spoken about him since 1995, even in passing. Ex-drummer Goat Pervertor (yes, seriously) does have a personal Facebook I could contact, but I don’t want to encroach on a guy’s personal social media for this just yet.
Here’s where it gets a little more interesting: Reddit user fezlum states that some brief online sleuthing showed that Hat appears to “own a small construction/carpentry company outside of Bergen”. Fezlum then linked this page, which appears to include Hat’s phone number. I managed to locate this page, which seems to confirm that this is his number, if not the number of another man named Jan Åge Solstad. If someone really wanted to, they could either contact Goat Pervertor on Facebook or call this phone number and attempt to find Hat, but I’m not that obsessed with this case just yet so I’ll leave that work to the real detectives.
What we know:
Hat disappeared in 1995 after leaving partway through recording an album
His phone number, or at least the phone number of a man with the same name, is public online
None of the other band members have spoken about him, even Gaahl who is alleged to keep in contact with him
Goat Pervertor does have a personal Facebook that can be contacted
What we don’t know:
Why Hat left partway through recording an album
What he’s been doing since 1995
If the Jan Åge Solstad working in construction is the same man
If Gaahl does, in fact, speak with him
Why Hat drastically changed his vocal style on Antichrist
Where he is now
Footnote: Hat’s vocal style, as mentioned, is DRASTICALLY different on Antichrist, sounding less like his unique parrot-screeching self and instead very similar to Pest. It wouldn’t surprise me if Infernus and co. preferred the Pest vocal style and attempted to get Hat to utilize it before deciding to dump him for Pest.
