NIRF Rankings 2020: IITs, IIMs and Delhi colleges dominate HRD Ministry’s India Rankings list - education

IIT Madras was again chosen as the top institution to study in the country while Bangalore based Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IIT Delhi bagged the second and the third spot in the India Rankings 2020, the HRD ministry’s rankings of Indian colleges and universities.
Seven IITs, including the ones in Bombay, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee, featured in the overall top ten list with the IISc, Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Benaras Hindu University (BHU) being the three non-IITs who made it.
HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank announced the results of the rankings which are brought out every year by his ministry. IIT Madras was the top institution in the overall category in last year’s rankings as well.
Category wise, among universities, the top three positions went to IISc, JNU and BHU followed by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore (fourth), Jadavpur University (fifth), University of Hyderabad (sixth), Calcutta University (seventh) and Manipal Academy of Higher Education (eighth positions).
Savitribai Phule Pune University was at the ninth position while Jamia Millia Islamia stood at the tenth spot.
Delhi University and Anna University, which have been chosen to be a part of the government’s Institute of Eminence programme, stood at the eleventh and twelfth spots.
Among management institutions, the dominance of IIMs was similar to dominance of the IITs in the overall list (and also in the list of engineering institutions).
The three older IIMs, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta garnered the top three spots. The IIM at Lucknow followed by IIT Kharagpur took the fourth and fifth spots. IIM Kozhikode and Indore were sixth and seventh. IIT Delhi got the eighth spot in the discipline of management. Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur and Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon got the ninth and tenth spots.
In the colleges list, those from Delhi, especially the women’s colleges stood out.
Miranda House was chosen as the country’s best college followed by Lady Shri Ram College for Women. The Hindu College stood at the third position followed by its north campus neighbour St Stephen’s. Presidency College from Chennai stood at the fifth spot followed by Loyola College in the same city. St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata stood seventh while Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Howrah was chosen as the eight best college in the country in the HRD ministry rankings.
Hans Raj College Delhi was at the ninth position while PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore stood at the tenth position.
In the Engineering category it was IITs all the way. The IITs at Madras, Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Indore bagged nine of the ten positions. NIT Tiruchirappalli was the only non-IIT in the list.
Among medical institutions,AIIMS Delhi was chose the top college followed by PGI, Chandigarh and CMC, Vellore. National Law School, Bengaluru was chosen as the best Law college followed by National Law University, Delhi and NALSAR, Hyderabad.
In the pharmacy category, the topper was Jamia Hamdard in Delhi followed by Panjab University, Chandigarh. The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Mohali stood in the third position.
The IITs of Roorkee and Kharagpur and NIT Calicut were the top three architecture colleges. Delhi’s Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Manipal Institute of Dental Sciences and Dr D Y Patil Vidyapeeth Pune were the top three in the newly introduced Dental Colleges category.
Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, said, “We are delighted to maintain our top position for the fifth time running (in the engineering category) and ever since the NIRF rankings were launched. This is the result of the excellent work of our faculty, students and staff, and we look forward to continue on the path of excellence in the coming years and make a mark nationally and internationally.”
HRD minister Pokhriyal said that these rankings acts as a guide to students for selection of universities based on a set of criteria and helps universities to improve their performance. Minister of State for HRD Sanjay Dhotre said participation in such ranking framework shows the confidence of the institution.
The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) and Perception (PR).
A total 3771 institutions offered themselves for ranking under “Overall”, category-specific and domain-specific rankings for India Rankings 2020. In all, 5805 applications for ranking were made by these 3771 unique applicant institutions, which include 294 Universities, 1071 Engineering Institutions, 630 Management Institutions, 334 Pharmacy Institutions, 97 Law Institutions, 118 Medical Institutions, 48 Architecture Institutions and 1659 General Degree Colleges. Number of unique applicants to India Rankings have increased from 3127 in 2019 to 3771 in 2020.

National Level MBA Entrance Exams in India
CAT (Common Admission Test): This one is the most popular national-level MBA entrance exam in India that is held each year for admission into the postgraduate management programs in all of the 20 IIMS (Indian Institutes of Management). The exam is usually conducted in the month of December annually.
MAT (Management Aptitude Test): This exam is conducted by the Centre for Management Services (CMS) division of AIMA (All India Management Association), and is held four times a year, in the first and second week of February, May, September and December. Both computer-based and paper-based exam formats are available.
XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test): It is a paper-pencil based MBA entrance exam held annually, usually on the first Sunday of January. XLRI conducts this exam and over 140 b-schools in India, plus XLRI Jamshedpur use XAT scores for selection of the right candidate for management education.
CMAT (Common Management Admission Test): This exam is conducted by AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) annually for admission into the MBA and PGDM programs across its participating management institutes. It is held in the month of January in multiple sessions.
ATMA (AIMS Test for Management Admissions): AIMS (Association of Indian Management School) conducts this exam for admission into their postgraduate courses, including MBA, PGDBA, PGDM, etc. in its participating universities.
OPENMAT (OPEN Management Aptitude Test): Conducted by IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) twice a year for admission into the postgraduate management courses, including MBA, PGDFM, PGDOM, PGDIM, PGDHRM, PGDMM and DIM in IGNOU.
GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test): GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) conducts this national-level entrance exam every year for admission into MBA and other postgraduate programs in India and abroad.
University/Institute Level MBA Entrance Exams in India
IIFT (Indian Institute of Foreign Trade): This is a paper-pen based entrance exam held annually on the third Sunday of November. It is conducted by Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) for admittance into its 2-year MBA in International Business program across its two campuses – Delhi and Kolkata.
NMAT by GMAC: It is a computer-based entrance exam carried out by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) for admission into MBA course in NMIMS (Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies) and across 15 other participating b-schools in India. This exam is held in a two and half month’s window, i.e. from first week of October to third week of December.
SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Test): It is paper-pencil based national level exam carried out by Symbiosis International University (SIU) for admittance into the MBA course at the b-schools under the university. This exam is usually held on the second Sunday of December.
IBSAT (ICFAI Business School Aptitude Test): It is a national-level entrance exam carried out by ICFAI Business School Hyderabad for admission into the MBA course across its campuses.
MICAT (MICA Admission Test): Around 180 seats PGDM-C (Postgraduate Diploma in Management-Communication) seats are available for eligible candidates under MICAT. MICA Ahmedabad carries out this university-level entrance exam twice a year – in the second week of December and second week of February.
TISSNET (TISS National Entrance Test): Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) is responsible for conducting the annual computer-based entrance exam for admission into the master’s degree course- Masters in Social Work, across its four major campuses- Mumbai, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Tuljapur. It is held in the third week of December.
IRMA Entrance Exam: The Institute of Rural Management Anand is the conducting authority of IRMA Entrance Exam. This exam is for admission into the IRMA’s postgraduate Diploma in Rural Management. Around 180 seats are offered under the PRM (Postgraduate in Rural Management) programme. It is held in the second week of February annually.
State-Level MBA Entrance Exams in India
MAH CET (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test): DTE (Directorate of Technical Education) Maharashtra conducts this exam for admission into the postgraduate management programs – PGDM/PGDMB and MBA/MMS at the DTE affiliated (can be University -managed, government and unaided) institutes in Maharashtra. This state-level exam is held annually in the third week of March.
TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test): Admission into the postgraduate management programmes offered by the Anna University and other Government-aided, Government and Self-financing state level institutes in Tamil Nadu is done through TANCET, which is an online entrance exam held once a year, generally in fourth week of March.
TSICET (Telangana State Integrated Common Entrance Test): The Kakatiya University, Warangal on behalf of Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) is the conducting authority for TSICET. This exam is a paper-pencil based exam and held annually in the third week of May for admission of the eligible candidates into MBA programmes offered by the b-schools in Telangana.
APICET (Andhra Pradesh Integrated Common Entrance Test): The Andhra University, Visakhapatnam is the conducting authority of APICET, which is a paper-pencil based exam held annually for admission into MBA programmes in b-schools in Andhra Pradesh. It is held in the third week of May.
KMAT (Karnataka Management Aptitude Test): The Karnataka Private Post Graduate Colleges Association (KPPGCA) is responsible for conducting the annual paper-pencil based entrance exam- KMAT for admission into the MBA programmes offered by the Private b-schools in Karnataka. Over 169 business schools in Karnataka accept the scores of KMAT. This exam is held in the first week of July.
PGCET (Karnataka Post Graduate Common Entrance Test): This exam is conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) for admissions of all eligible candidates into the MBA programmes offered by the business schools in Karnataka. This is a paper-pencil based exam held annually usually in the last week of June.
GCET (Gujarat Common Entrance Test): This state-level exam is conducted by the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) for admission into the MBA and other postgraduate courses in its affiliate colleges. It is an online exam held in the month of May every year.
UPES MET (UPES Management Entrance Test): This exam is conducted by the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies for admission into the MBA course in the Energy Management offered by the University. It is a pencil-paper based objective test held annually in the first week of February.
HP CMAT (Himachal Pradesh Combined Management Aptitude Test): This exam is conducted annually by Himachal Pradesh University, Institute of Management Studies on behalf of DTE (Department of Technical Education), Government of Himachal Pradesh, and those who qualify are offered admission into MBA programmes offered by b-schools in Himachal Pradesh. It is a pencil-paper based objective test held in the month of May every year.
GTU offers various UG, PG, Doctorate and Diploma programs over 400 affiliated colleges. The University offers courses in various streams such as Management, Technology, Pharmacy, Science and many more. The University follows a semester pattern for all UG and PG courses. Exam for odd semesters conducted in the month of November/ December whereas, exam for even semesters conducted in the month of May/ June.

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has topped the list of management institutes in the county, in the National Institutional Ranking Framework list of 2020, announced by the Minister of Human Resource Development, Dr. Ramesh Pokriyal on Thursday.
IIM Bangalore is at the second place while IIM Calcutta is on the third place in the list. The fourth, fifth and sixth spots have been clinched by IIM Lucknow, IIT Kharagpur and IIM Kozhikode respectively. IIM Indore, IIT Delhi, XLRI Jamshedpur and Management Development Institute Gurugram bagged the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth spots respectively.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has topped the overall list of higher education institutes in the country. IISc Bengaluru came second and IIT-Delhi has been ranked third in the HRD ministry’s national ranking of higher institutes.

Among pharmacy institutes, Jamia Hamdard has come out as the leader. In Dental colleges, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences has bagged the first position. This is the first time that dental colleges have been ranked under NIRF.
