The Ladakh Protest: The 21-day Hunger Strike led by Sonam Wangchuk
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cdbf07dd2ba00f8826dfa140cbd8d9d3/63cf0fbd9d58a83f-f0/s540x810/c95c4769f2376df51edeb3a5b2ac3a944d1b8f62.jpg)
Ladakh, famously known as “Mars on Earth”, is the perfect destination where the mind slows down and the soul finds its path.
It is the northeastern Union territory of India, known for its highest mountain ranges, mesmerizing landscapes, beautiful deep valleys, crystal clear blue lakes, diverse wildlife, highest motorable mountain roads, Buddhist heritage, and the overall picturesque beauty of the place.
Ladakh: A union territory without legislature
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/10ae38f9e0524c54014d161a9f19a224/63cf0fbd9d58a83f-69/s540x810/b64681b7873b2469f85beb7f8b1381be9ffcf7a6.jpg)
Ladakh, which was a part of Jammu and Kashmir since 1847, was separated from Indian-administered Kashmir in 2019 and was reconstituted as a Union territory on October 31, 2019.
People of Ladakh have constantly demanded separate territory since the 1930s due to the unfair treatment of Kashmir and the prevailing cultural differences between people of Kashmir and Ladakh.
The formation of Ladakh as a separate Union territory was widely celebrated. Still, people were disappointed because it was made a UT without a legislative assembly and would have a lieutenant governor, while Jammu and Kashmir had a legislature.
What does it mean to have no legislature in Ladakh?
Unlike J&K, Ladakh cannot elect its own representative.
Ladakh will be ruled directly by the central government through a lieutenant governor as an administrator.
The President of India has the power to form rules and regulations for Ladakh, according to Article 240.
Sonam Wangchuk following his Father’s footsteps
Sonam Wangyal was born in 1925 in a small village in the Leh district of Ladakh. He worked his entire life for the rights of the people of Ladakh. He had strong secular beliefs.
He was appointed as the MLC of Jammu and Kashmir from 1957–1967 and as the MLA from 1967–1972, due to his selfless service toward the people of Ladakh.
Wangyal was also an active member in the campaign for ST status for Ladakhis, which was carried out between 1982 and 1984.
In 1984, on his five-day hunger strike, the former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, visited Leh and requested Wangyal to withdraw from the strike with the promise of granting the status of ST to the people of Ladakh.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7080617dcd6d950cc99d98347a7ea2a5/63cf0fbd9d58a83f-2f/s400x600/924aa931761b3f3ed748d8ec2fef426fd71a4541.jpg)
Following his father’s strong morals and values and showcasing his devotion to the land and people of Ladakh, Sonam Wangchuk, a nature activist, engineer, innovator, and educationalist, began a “climate fast for 21 days” on March 6, 2024.
Why are they protesting?
The primary goal behind the protest is to raise awareness about the fragile ecosystem of Ladakh endangered by the growing industrial and developmental projects approved in New Delhi without consent, a threat posed as a result of having no legislative assembly in the Union territory of Ladakh.
The residents of Ladakh have two key demands:
Full-fledged statehood for Ladakh: the residents have demanded to elevate Ladakh’s status as a Union territory to a full-fledged state. This would enable Ladakh to have its own government and the right to form its own rules and regulations in favor of the land and people of the territory.
Integration of Ladakh in the 6th Schedule of the Constitution: The 6th Schedule aims to protect areas with tribal and indigenous populations. By including Ladakh in the 6th schedule, it would allow the state to establish autonomous districts and regional councils.
These elected bodies will have the power to administer and protect the tribal regions of the area. It would give the Ladakhis more control over water management, land use, and cultural preservation.
What is the government’s response to the ongoing protest?
Unlike the response and action taken upon the hunger strike carried out by Wangchuk’s father, the present-day government is MIA.
The current government seems unbothered by the demands and protests in Ladakh, just the way it is, and the deteriorating situation in Manipur.
The pioneers of the movement and every other active citizen in and out of Ladakh are furious about the inaction of the government and the PM, who knowingly promised in his 2019 manifesto of Lok Sabha, that Ladakh will be incorporated into the 6th schedule of the constitution. But apparently, they failed to honor their promises.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/57b17722cfb4710038a0f7987706c763/63cf0fbd9d58a83f-b7/s540x810/814febba8287cbe27a51e7f4ac88dd4fefcc7ae2.jpg)
Lack of media coverage:
The lack of media coverage is infuriating for the people of Ladakh and the active citizens of India.
Although the independent media and journalists who are physically present in the ongoing protests do cover the news for the country, But it is disappointing to witness the lack of coverage by mainstream media and the big houses.
The scarcity of coverage of this major issue conceals the truth from the nation. The nation wants to know more about the concerns and affairs of the territory. Unless there is some news from the local media houses, the lack of coverage by the recognized media houses keeps the common man from knowing what is really happening there.
The current news on the Ladakh protest:
According to the current news,
Wangchuk survived solely on water and salt during the 21-day hunger strike (inspired by Gandhiji), which lasted from March 6th to March 26th.
In his speech, he talked about the “21-day fast"—that 21 days was the longest fast that Gandhiji kept during the independence movement.
Wangchuk states that the 21-day fast is over, but the protest will still continue. They will only rest when the government agrees to fulfill their demands.
Wangchuk said, “After me, women will begin a 10-day fast tomorrow. This will be followed by youth and Buddhist monks. Then it could be women, or I could come back. This cycle will go on.”
After ending his 21-day fast, Wangchuk stated “We will continue our struggle (in support of our demands). The gathering of 10,000 people at the venue and the participation of over 60,000 others over the past 20 days is a testimony of the people's aspirations.”
Conclusion:
All things considered, Ladakh, the "Land of High Passes," stands at a crossroads. While the echoes of their protests might fade from national headlines, the Ladakhi people's yearning for a brighter future persists. Whether they find resolution in the sixth schedule status or the full-throated roar of statehood, one thing is certain: Ladakh's story is far from over.

The cause of the accident is not known yet. The bus was reportedly jam-packed when the accident took place.
As many as 37 passengers were killed including the driver and 19 sustained injuries after a bus carrying them skidded off the road and rolled down into a 300-foot gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district on Wednesday.
The death toll is likely to go up, the officials said.
The bus skidded off the road near Trungal-Assar on the Batote-Kishtwar national highway and fell 300 feet downhill. According to sources, the bus was ferrying 56 passengers. Due to the fall from a considerable height, the bus was badly damaged, sources said.
Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, besides locals, are involved in the rescue operation.
Some of the deceased have been identified and the bodies will be handed over to their families.
The injured were first taken to a hospital in Doda and subsequently, four of them were airlifted to the GMC hospital in Jammu.
The cause of the accident is not known yet. The officials said the bus was carrying extra passengers and while negotiating a "U" turn, it overturned and rolled down into the gorge.
The bodies were taken out after cutting some parts of the bus, they added. Some of the bodies were badly mutilated, the officials said.
Locals expressed concern over the poor condition of the road which, they said, not only led to this accident but several such incidents in the past.
Mohammad Ashraf, the sarpanch of the area where the accident took place, who along with other local residents, launched the rescue operation, said that at least 10 accidents have taken place in Doda of late, but the administration is yet to act.
"We gave Rs 6 lakh to repair the road. They failed to repair it. They have misappropriated the money. A similar accident took place here only a few months ago and many lives were lost," he added.
This is probably the biggest accident in Doda in the last few years.
Condolences pour in
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to those who lost their lives in the accident. "The bus accident in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir is distressing. My condolences to the families who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest," the PMO posted on X.
The Prime Minister has said that an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund would be given to the families of those killed in the accident. Those injured will receive assistance of Rs 50,000.
Meanwhile, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed profound sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
"Extremely pained by the loss of lives in a tragic bus accident in Assar, Doda. My heartfelt condolences to bereaved families & wish for a speedy recovery of those injured in the accident. Directed Div Com & Dist Admin to provide all necessary assistance to affected persons," said LG Sinha.

PM Modi Inaugurates Z-Morh Tunnel in Sonamarg, J&K
On January 13, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-awaited Z-Morh tunnel in the Ganderbal district of Kashmir. The inauguration took place at the East Portal of the tunnel, which was covered in fresh snow, adding a scenic backdrop to this significant event.
PM Modi was accompanied by Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Dr. Jitendra Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and other senior officials. After the inauguration, the Prime Minister toured the tunnel and received a detailed briefing about the challenges faced during its construction. The tunnel was built under harsh weather conditions, cutting through the tough Himalayan terrain, which made the project a remarkable engineering feat.
The Z-Morh tunnel will provide an all-weather road to the popular tourist destination of Sonamarg. It is particularly important from a defense perspective as it will improve connectivity to the strategic region, making it easier for both civilians and the military to travel, even during adverse weather conditions like heavy snowfall and avalanches.
The tunnel, which cost over ₹2,700 crore to build, is a two-lane, bi-directional road connecting Gagangir and Sonamarg. It is designed to withstand the challenging conditions at an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level. In addition to the main road, the tunnel is equipped with a 7.5-meter-wide escape passage, ensuring safety in case of emergencies.
This tunnel will significantly improve connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, with a route that bypasses landslide-prone areas, ensuring smoother and safer travel. It is also a crucial link for travelers heading to Leh.
PM Modi, who is visiting Jammu and Kashmir for the first time after the state elections in September-October 2024, expressed his appreciation for the hard work of the construction workers who completed this project in challenging conditions. He is scheduled to meet them during his visit to acknowledge their dedication.
The Z-Morh tunnel marks a major milestone in improving infrastructure and connectivity in the region, benefiting both tourism and defense sectors.

Mir Junaid alleges Sheikh Rashid, MP, a National Threat and Traitor Involved in Terror Funding
Langate, Oct 12: Mir Junaid, who contested assembly elections from Langate in a statement issued here said that this evening, he had the honor of meeting with the Honorable Lieutenant Governor, Shri Manoj Sinha, just before his departure for New Delhi.
He said that he will soon be sharing transformative news for the people of Langate—news that will come directly from him, without deception, and with the pure intention of uplifting the region. This stands in stark contrast to the web of lies being spread by Sheikh Rashid, whose recent press release and Facebook post are nothing but fabrications, said Mir in a statement issued here.
He added that Sheikh Rashid, a Member of Parliament who is chargesheeted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for terror funding, has been begging for mercy behind closed doors, not for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, but for himself. At Raj Bhavan, he was not advocating for the development of North Kashmir or the welfare of the humble citizens he claims to represent. Instead, he was pleading for his own escape from justice, trying to evade the terror funding charges that expose him as a traitor and a threat to national security.
Mir further added that the man, who claims to speak for Jammu and Kashmir, is only speaking the language of Pakistan. His efforts are designed to destabilize India and push our youth into the arms of violence. Let me be clear: the resolution of the Kashmir issue is not India’s problem; it is Pakistan’s. Sheikh Rashid is actively working to keep alive issues that were buried on August 5, 2019, when nearly 370 Honorable Parliamentarians of India voted to abrogate Article 370 and 35A, finally declaring that these provisions were deadwood. Following this, the Honorable Supreme Court of India has provided robust affirmation of our constitutional sovereignty and integrity, confirming that matters like independence, referendum, plebiscite, and self-rule are non-existent and null and void.
Mir added that Sheikh Rashid, however, refuses to accept this reality. He is not a leader; he is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, pushing a narrative that is not only false but dangerous. His lies about plebiscites and his so-called “solution” for Kashmir are nothing more than an attempt to remain politically relevant while being a national threat. For 15 years, he deceived the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and now, by legitimizing dangerous issues, he is pushing the youth towards violence and destruction for his own political gain.
He in a statement further added that the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have always maintained that national interest will not be compromised for political interests. So I must ask—what is happening in the case of Sheikh Rashid? Aren’t you compromising national interest by allowing this man, who is chargesheeted for terror funding, to continue his dangerous activities? Please understand, you have miserably failed in experimenting with Sheikh Rashid in Kashmir. He is legitimizing issues that are not only dangerous for the youth of Jammu and Kashmir but are also a direct threat to the security of our nation.
I call upon the Ministry of Home Affairs to take immediate cognizance of this grave situation. Sheikh Rashid is not just a liar—he is a national threat, and his place is not in Parliament, but in Tihar Jail. The Kashmir Police must launch an immediate investigation into his actions. He has betrayed the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the noble people of North Kashmir, and most importantly, he has betrayed the nation. His actions amount to sedition and treason, and it is time for the Government of India to act decisively.
The BJP must remember its own words. National interest must never be compromised for political interest. Sheikh Rashid’s continuous presence in public life is a direct contradiction of this principle. His lies, manipulations, and dangerous narratives are putting the youth of Jammu and Kashmir at risk and threatening the peace and stability of India. The Government of India, and specifically the BJP, must reflect on this and think of the larger interest of the nation.
Sheikh Rashid is no longer just a political figure—he is a legitimizer of dangerous and seditious ideas. His presence is poisoning the minds of our youth, and the consequences are too grave to ignore. It is time to end this experiment, recognize him for the threat he truly is, and ensure that justice is served before more lives are lost.

Jammu and Kashmir's Assembly elections face uncertainty as opposition fears LG-nominated MLAs may sway results in favor of the BJP.
The stakes have never been higher as Jammu and Kashmir prepares for its first Assembly elections in over a decade. This throws open concerns over the role of five nominated members – a provision enabled by the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 – who are nominated by the Lieutenant Governor for various segments of society, including two women, two Kashmiri Pandits and one displaced individual from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. But that decision has sparked fears in opposition parties, which believe that this could turn out to be some form of “BJP plus” nominations.

Critics such as National Conference and Congress leaders argue that the power to nominate members should lie with an elected government. They regard it as a form of ‘pre-election rigging’, afraid that the nominees would cast their vote in unison with the BJP and thus sway the outcome of the election to the side of the ruling party. The BJP, on the other hand, is confident that the nominations are well within the legal framework established under the J-K Reorganisation Act.

To that end, the legislative landscape has dramatically changed, with the strength of the Assembly doubling and now totaling 95 seats, reflecting a highly significant shift in representation. Not only are most of the more than 40% of candidates running as independents–indeed many considered to be BJP allies–but their leaders argue this is simply a vote-dividing ploy. Only then would the real implications of these developments be in the balance, holding in the balance the political future of Jammu and Kashmir-the country or countrymen of a million ballot boxes-minus the promised play-by-the-book ending.
