Coming Soon: "Wicked Game: The True Story of Guitarist James Calvin Wilsey"
Coming Soon: “Wicked Game: The True Story of Guitarist James Calvin Wilsey”
Advance praise: “Here’s the story of an unsung genius that, in many ways, is the story of every working musician, a cautionary tale of crappy apartments and cool guitars, of untold temptations, abject surrender and the pawnshop at the beginning and end of the arc. It’s a story of youth, beauty and inspiration on the razor’s edge, of love and compulsion, solidarity and betrayal, of a quiet man who…

Aquarium Drunkard Book Club :: Chapter 17
Welcome back to the stacks. It’s Aquarium Drunkard’s Book Club, our monthly gathering of recent (or not so recent) recommended reading. This month: the proto T-Rex lit of Marc Bolan, a regional love letter to the art of the concert poster, a deep dive into Dilla’s unique time feel, mid-80s Charles Portis, James Calvin Wilsey’s lonesome noir guitar, and a look into the rise of Warner Bros. Records. Your librarians this month are Tyler Wilcox, Jarrod Annis, Chad DePasquale, Justin Gage, Mark Neeley and Jason P. Woodbury.

“Chris Isaak - If Isaac had released only one song, "Wicked Game," - if he had been only a one-hit wonder - he would still have earned a place in Rock 'n Roll heaven on the strength of that song alone. Isaak could have been a descendant of Roy Orbison with his themes of love, loss and heartbreak - and his uncanny likeness in voice. Isaak was a throwback to the 1950′s with his cat clothes, quiff, and good looks. But he was more than a pretty face with swagger and a retro-rockabilly sound. The guy was dripping with talent, which he displayed almost effortlessly - not to mention his crack band: James Calvin Wilsey (guitar), Rowland Salley (bass), and Kenney Dale Johnson (drums). Isaak's pure, distinctive voice with its high falsetto, and his reverb-laden guitar style set him apart from his contemporaries. He looked like a cross between early Elvis Presley and twangy guitar great Duane Eddy, with a little Eddie Cochran swag thrown in for good measure. He and his band (Wilsey departed in 1995, replaced by Hershel Yatovitz), have recorded 12 studio albums, including "Wicked Game," (1990), "Forever Blue," (1995), "Baby Did a Bad Thing,'(1999), and "Beyond the Sun," (2011). Some of his more memorable songs are: "Somebody's Crying," "Go Walking Down There," "Goin' Nowhere," San Francisco Days," "Blue Days, Black Nights," 'Wicked Game," and "Solitary Man." Isaac is underrated and deserves to be recognized as one of the great singers and stylists of the modern era.” ~ Harry Brus.

I automatically fell in love with the first albums of @chrisisaak because they had that Melancholic Rockabilly Sound that never had listened to before. Behind this sound was the #Stratocaster guitar of James Calvin Wilsey with a magic touch of delays and Reverb. Unfortunately he passed away last Christmas Eve and we lost the man who created an unmistakable guitar sound and style that everyone will recognize at the first note. Thanks Jimmy for your beautiful Licks and introduce the sound of Stratocaster in the particular #rockandroll and #Rockabilly style of Chris Isaak and his band 🎸✨. A great example are songs like #wickedgame and #bluehotel so let’s start this #straturday with The first one while honoring this man who influenced in my guitar style 🎙🎶 #jamescalvinwilsey And don’t forget to listen to the following albums this weekend 🎧▶️#silvertone #chrisisaak #heartshapedworld #sanfranciscodays 💿 #guitardelay #guitarreverb #happystraturday #texasspecialpickups #fenderstratocaster #fender (at Reus) https://www.instagram.com/p/BshvwNtHbEW/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=phk827bfsx49

Man.

There are some tunes that just stop you. They are mostly ballads that deal with all sorts of pain, but the most common of those are the ditties about a severe emotional conflict. This theme has always been great to many poets (O.K., it wasn’t good for their personalities, although you catch my drift.), so it’s no wonder that musicians talk about them as well. One such is Chris Isaak, who has a lot of great songs, even though he is known for this one. I am not claiming this one is terrible, to be honest, it is incredible. There is this twangy guitar, located somewhere between a dream and an elegy, paired with Isaak’s yearning vocals that present us with an oxymoron, i.e. an intense whisper, going all the way, yet not reaching the catharsis. It all transforms this tale into something Roy Orbison would do, had he had the Isaak’s producers.

Kirkus Reviews "Wicked Game": "... a Gritty Look at the Guitarist's Success and Ultimate Downfall"
Kirkus Reviews “Wicked Game”: “… a Gritty Look at the Guitarist’s Success and Ultimate Downfall”
Kirkus Reviews just ran an excellent review of my book, “Wicked Game: The True Story of Guitarist James Calvin Wilsey.” “James Calvin Wilsey may not be a household name, but he’s certainly well known in some circles,” begins the review. “As a guitarist for Chris Isaak, he created a riff that not only helped make the song “Wicked Game” a hit, but also has gone down in history as one of the best…
