The largest island in Indonesia, Sumatra, is renowned for its exceptional coffee in addition to its stunning scenery and rich cultural legacy. For coffee lovers, Sumatra, one of the most sought after coffee origins in the world, provides a singular and unforgettable sensory experience. We will take you on a tour of Sumatra's various regions in this profile, exploring the island's geography, climate, culture, and history as well as the unique qualities that set Sumatran coffee apart from its competitors. Come discover the wonders of Sumatra, its enthralling charm, and the superb coffee it yields.
In the second century CE, immigrants from India began to settle in Western Sumatra, which had previously been inhabited by Minangkabau peoples. The area later joined the Buddhist Srivijaya empire, which ruled over southern Sumatra from the seventh to the thirteenth centuries. The Hindu-Malay kingdom of Minangkabau gained dominance in the area after Srivijaya declined, and its ruler converted to Islam in the 16th century. The Dutch arrived in the region shortly after, in 1596, and started to take control of western Sumatra. The British briefly took over the island at the beginning of the 19th century.
Following their intervention on behalf of the Minangkabau royal family during the civil war known as the Padri War (1821–37), the Dutch were able to re-establish themselves in the area. The Minangkabau's domain, which roughly corresponds to the present day province of West Sumatra, was then subject to Dutch rule. During World War II, the Japanese occupied Sumatra from 1942 to 1945. Following a period of fierce anticolonial struggle, Indonesian nationalists proclaimed the Republic of Indonesia to be established after the war. In 1950, West Sumatra became a part of the Central Sumatra province and was incorporated into the Republic of Indonesia. Central Sumatra was divided into the provinces of West Sumatra, Jambi, and Riau in 1957. The Revolutionary Government of the Indonesian Republic, with its capital at Bukittinggi, was established in West Sumatra early the following year as a result of rebellion against the Sukarno regime. Following airstrikes on Padang and Bukittinggi, Indonesian forces put an end to the uprising in the middle of 1958.
With customs preserved and honoured in rituals, artwork, and day-to-day activities, Sumatran culture continues to be essential to the island's identity. Festivals that draw both locals and visitors, like Batak's Lake Toba Festival and the Minangkabau Tabuik Festival, preserve and advance cultural pride and awareness. Younger generations are able to connect with their heritage through the continued success of traditional dance, music, architecture, and culinary practices. Sumatran culture in contemporary Indonesia serves as a reminder of the country's diversity and emphasises the value of custom in a society that is becoming more interconnected by the day.

Grandmother in Indonesia swallowed alive by 22ft-long python
An Indonesian woman has been eaten alive by a huge python after venturing into the jungle to collect rubber.
Horrified locals managed to catch the 22ft-long snake and cut it open - inside they found the undigested remains of the 54-year-old grandmother.
Jahrah, who like many Indonesians goes by just one name, had walked into the jungle alone in Jambi province, on the island of Sumatra, but did not return home.
Her family became worried and villagers sent search parties out into the forest.
Two days after her disappearance, they came across the huge snake, which had an enlarged stomach, resting in a clearing.
Video footage showed local men spearing the giant snake with a long stick and bashing it on its head.
They then cut open its stomach with knives and machetes, revealing the remains of the woman.
There is speculation that the clearing of forest for palm oil cultivation in countries such as Indonesia is leading to greater contact between pythons and humans.
The chief of the local village, named Anto, said the woman would have been snatched by the snake’s jaws and then slowly suffocated to death.
“The victim did not come home after saying goodbye to her family to go to the garden collecting rubber from trees on Friday. Her family then reported her missing to the local authorities, and a search has been carried out since then.

Last month, a man in Indonesia’s Jambi province died after a motorcycle accident – it wasn’t the crash that killed him, however. When his vehicle lost balance and he struck the floor, the self-assembled gun he was carrying exploded and mortally wounded his head.
The man, a member of Indonesia’s Suku Anak Dalam (SAD) indigenous group, was on his way to hunt. Historically, when wildlife and forest resources were in abundance for the SAD, the traditional community would hunt with spears. Today, it’s almost impossible to do so – instead they use illegal, and often dangerous, homemade rifles.
Homemade firearms offer just one example of the SAD’s struggles to adapt to modern-day Indonesia, where they are one of the few indigenous groups still living as nomads.
Traditionally, the SAD have made their livelihood through hunting and gathering, rarely settling in one place for long. They do this primarily to avoid their historic enemies, but one of the most well-known traditions of the SAD is melangun, a practice of leaving their current location every time a family member passes away. No less pressing, too, is the need to get closer to food resources.
In modern-day Indonesia, however, the nomadic life has become a challenge, and with massive economic development, the places they once roamed as a way of life have changed dramatically.

Excerpt from this Wall Street Journal story:
As large tracts of Indonesia’s forest land go up in flames for the second time in five years, scientists are warning that the world’s rainforests risk becoming caught in a reinforcing cycle of destruction that could make them difficult to save.
Research in recent years has shown that the very nature of rainforests -- from Southeast Asia to the Amazon -- is changing as a result of extensive clearing for farms, pastureland and other use, making them much more vulnerable to further destruction.
“All the mechanisms essentially feed into a positive feedback loop,” said William Laurance, a research professor at James Cook University in Australia. “More fire begets more fires, more degradation begets more degradation.”
Deforested land dries out quickly in the sun and wind. Fires, both naturally occurring and man-made, can spread more easily from this degraded landscape into adjoining forest.
There is another problem too. Clearing foliage reduces evapotranspiration, the process by which the forest releases water vapor into the atmosphere—which accounts for around a third of the rainfall in a rainforest like the Amazon, according to Dominick Spracklen, a professor at the University of Leeds who studies the link between rainforest and rainfall.
The reduction in water vapor decreases rainfall and extends dry seasons, making the forest more vulnerable to fire—and the fires more difficult to control. Last year, Thomas Lovejoy, a professor at George Mason University, and Carlos Nobre, a Brazilian scientist, wrote in an editorial in academic journal Science Advances that parts of the Amazon system could hit a tipping point and “flip to non-forest ecosystems” when deforestation reaches around 20% to 25%, given the added challenge of climate change.
Around 17% of the Amazon rainforest has been lost over the past half-century, according to the World Wildlife Fund.
Indonesia’s rainforests, which are smaller than the Amazon, are already greatly diminished. Industrial agricultural expanded aggressively over the past few decades, making the country the world’s largest producer of palm oil. There is evidence that rainforest destruction have already changed weather patterns extensively.
Researchers found that by 2010, 70% of forest area on the Indonesian island of Sumatra has been converted for plantations and other purposes. Temperatures in the island’s Jambi province were nearly 2 degrees Fahrenheit higher in 2015 than 2000, a study found—an increase researchers linked to heavy deforestation there. Forest fires were once rare in heavily forested parts of the island, such as Riau, near Singapore, but in recent years have occurred almost annually, say scientists.

Guys I really need your help to spread this.
I’m really sorry this is not a fun video but I live in Indonesia right now and the environment here is so chaotic. This video is today’s sky near the forest fire hotspot in Kumpeh, Jambi Province, Sumatera. As you see the sky turned red because the heavy haze. The forest fire caused from land clearing done by several PALM COMPANIES and the government is not willing to say the companies name. The forest fire is spreading mainly in Sumatera and Borneo. If any of you residing in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand you probably know how terrible it is.
Very unhealthy air quality, a lot of protected rare animal died and a baby died because of respiration trouble from the impact.
I’m writing this because I have enough of my government neglecting the issues (we have a lot going on but this one particularly very disturbing) and I will go to a strike tomorrow regarding this issue. The strike will be kind of risky because it can be considered as treason by the new Indonesian criminal law.
I just want you guys to spread the awareness and support us against this issue because Indonesia has major forests in the world and government is being ugly. If you guys have any environmental related activities like lecture or group you can bring this topic because this has not been enough known. I work in law sector in Indonesia and abroad, however there is still not enough environmental law awareness around. By saving our forest we also saving the future. I hope forest fire will not happening again in any part of the world.
Thank you very much!

Possible quantum milestone (Foreign Policy) Researchers at Google may have achieved a major breakthrough toward ushering in the era of quantum computing. In a research paper briefly posted online and then taken down, Google researchers claim to have used quantum computing to perform in three minutes and 20 seconds a calculation that would have taken a supercomputer at least 10,000 years, the Financial Times reports. Quantum computing has huge implications for national security. The technology would likely render contemporary cryptography irrelevant and grant the country that controls it a decisive technological edge over its rivals, including by trivially decrypting any of its adversaries’ communications.
Americans saving more (LI) Americans are saving more of their after-tax income than they have since 2012. The personal-saving rate previously plunged to 3.7% during the housing bubble in 2007, before drifting up to 6.5% in 2010. That rate has inched up steadily since, hitting an average 8.2% in the first half of 2019. Economists say the figures suggest it’s likely Americans are preparing for a potential recession, with recent tax cuts being poured into savings rather than disbursed at big box retail chains.
Pressure Rises over Trump’s Call with Zelensky (Foreign Policy) On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump responded to reports that he had pushed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate corruption claims about former Vice President Joe Biden and his son--an inquiry that could affect Biden’s ongoing presidential campaign. Trump told reporters that he had discussed Biden during a phone call with Zelensky in July, but defended the conversation as appropriate. Meanwhile, the U.S. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said on Sunday that the phone call could justify impeachment on the grounds of foreign interference. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has so far resisted calls from within the Democratic Party to begin the process.
Trump says religious freedom must be protected (AP) President Donald Trump is calling on world leaders to take action to protect religious freedom in the wake of rising persecution of people based on their faith and beliefs. In a speech at the United Nations on Monday, Trump says about 80 percent of the world’s population live in countries where religious liberty is threatened, restricted or even banned. He says people of all faiths are being jailed, sanctioned, tortured and killed--often at the hands of their government--simply because they expressed their beliefs.

An angry mob torched local government buildings, shops and homes and set fire to cars and motorbikes on several roads leading to the district chief’s office in Wamena city, said Papua police chief Rudolf Alberth Rodja.
Skies turn red across parts of Indonesia as crisis from fire-induced haze escalates (Washington Post) Wildfires, many of them intentionally set to clear the way for agricultural operations, have turned the skies over Indonesia’s Jambi province a dark blood red. Images and video shared on social media call attention to the country’s escalating fire problem, with data showing that emissions of greenhouse gases from these blazes are nearly on par with those from Indonesia’s devastating 2015 fire season. So far this year, the blazes have scorched an estimated 800,000 acres, which is larger than the state of Rhode Island.
