The Russian Village That Raised ONE Super Series Contender Jamal Yusupov
When Jamal “Kherow” Yusupov enters the ONE Championship Circle against Samy “AK47” Sana this Friday, 25 December, he won’t be stepping inside alone.
In the previously recorded main event of ONE: COLLISION COURSE II, Yusupov will be carrying memories of the villagers who helped raise him during his youth on a farmstead in Telman, Dagestan.
“In Telman, everyone knew each other. It felt like one big family,” the Russian recalled.
“People in Telman just got on with their lives – kids went to school, while parents worked on a state farm trying to make an honest living.”
But adults weren’t the only ones who had to till the land of the state farm. Even kids did their part, and Yusupov was no different.
“When you live in a village, everyone has a task to do,” he continued. “Mine was looking after the house and our livestock.”
Yusupov and his family got by with just the basics, but the Dagestani felt like it was always enough. He didn't have the tangibles that many other kids are afforded while growing up, but he owned something more important.
“We had clothes to wear, and we had food to eat. I could not always get stuff that I wanted, like toys or trendy sneakers, but I was part of a big family, and I was happy,” he said.
That family extended beyond the farm fences and into the larger village around him, where he was free to experience his childhood as he saw fit.
“Kids at school got along well and my childhood was fairly carefree. We used to stay outside ’til late and we played on the streets, but there were no criminal gangs and no turf wars,” Yusupov said.
“I know that in big cities like Makhachkala, kids from rival schools used to fight each other, but our village life was very different, with more respect and more peace.”
Yusupov will now take the qualities that his village instilled in him and let them shine on the biggest stage for Muay Thai athletes – ONE Super Series.

Petchmorakot Petchyindee vs. Tawanchai PK.Saenchai - ONE 161
As contentious as the decision was amongst fans and the Petchyindee camp, it can’t be understated how brilliant last year’s fight between Petchmarakot and Tawanchai was.
Now Tawanchai is the ONE Featherweight Muay Thai champion and will look to defend his title this Friday (Feb. 24) - Saturday in Thailand - when he takes on Jamal Yusupov in the co-main event of ONE Fight Night 7 on Amazon Prime.

Samy Sana: Yusupov ‘Has To Fear Everything Because I’m Strong, Tall, And Powerful’
Samy “AK47” Sana will face Jamal “Kherow” Yusupov in a nail-biting ONE Super Series main event at ONE: COLLISION COURSE II, a previously recorded show that airs this Friday from the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
It will be Sana’s first bout in ONE Championship since dropping a unanimous decision to Giorgio “The Doctor” Petrosyan in the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix Championship Final last year.
The man from Paris knows it’s vital to beat Yusupov in their featherweight Muay Thai foray if he wants another shot at gold.
“This is a really important bout that I’m taking extremely seriously,” Sana said. “Especially [if there is a chance to compete] for the ONE Championship belt.”
The Frenchman is also well-aware of how much power his Dagestani opponent carries in his firsts.
After all, Yusupov knocked out “The Boxing Computer” Yodsanklai IWE Fairtex in his debut last year. It was a finish that nobody in 10 years had been able to pull off against the Thai legend – not even Sana.
However, “AK47” believes his own win over Yodsanklai may have helped Yusupov score the impressive finish. And this Friday, he plans to show both “Kherow” and fans around the world that he's the superior athlete.
“He beat Yodsanklai after I’d beaten him. I think Yodsanklai was still in mental shock after my bout, so it was easier for him, but I’ll show that I’m the boss,” Sana said.
“There is not a lot of footage of him available, but I’m analyzing his Yodsanklai bout. He seems to be a good striker, but I’m also really powerful. He has a good boxing technique, and he comes from K-1, so I’ll only have to care about his fists.”
As for what Yusupov should be on the lookout for, Sana narrowed it down to three factors.
“He has to fear everything because I’m strong, tall, and powerful,” the Frenchman said. “I’m a pure nak muay, so it’ll be tough for him. We are going to put on a good fight.
“As with every fight, I’ll need to give my best at 200 percent to finish the opponent and to show I’m the best.”
Sana certainly feels a sense of urgency to get back in the win column – not only to get back on track, but also to get closer to the accolades he’s been chasing.
“Of course, I’ve been disappointed by my loss because I’m not used to losing. Losing is very tough for me. But Giorgio and I are in the same rankings, so there will definitely be a time to take my revenge,” Sana said.
“It is definitely my goal to get the ONE Championship belt. I’ll do anything, and I’ll get to it in Muay Thai, kickboxing, and maybe in the higher weight class.
“In my next bout, I’ll prove that I am a top contender who is tough to beat, and I want to show that I am the real champion of my weight class.”

Yusupov, Akhmetov Victorious At ONE: COLLISION COURSE II
ONE Championship’s final event of 2020 – ONE: COLLISION COURSE II – capped off another strong year for the Singapore-based martial arts promotion.
The promotion's finale featured a first-round KO, a TKO stoppage, and a thrilling ONE Super Series Muay Thai main event.
In the night’s headliner, Jamal “Kherow” Yusupov’s left hand led him to a unanimous decision win over the gritty Samy “AK47” Sana.
The featherweight striking affair started off evenly as both men stood toe-to-toe and slung punches and kicks at each other.
At the end of the second round, however, “AK47” launched a right hand at his Russian rival, but Yusupov countered with a right jab-straight left boxing combination that took the Parisian off his feet.
It was a defining moment for Yusupov, and after another tightly contested third round, the knockdown proved enough to earn him the win.
The prelude to the main event featured a clash between former ONE Flyweight World Champion Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov and “Ottogi” Dae Hwan Kim.
From the opening bell, Akhmetov proved he didn’t miss a step during his time away from the Circle, as he pelted his South Korean rival with a variety of punches.
By the second round, Kim wore the damage all over his face, but he never gave up – and “The Kazakh” never let up, either.
In round three, he switched tactics and took the fight to the ground, where he unleashed punches in both half-guard and then guard to secure the dominant unanimous decision win.

Momotaro And Walter Goncalves Have Potential To Deliver Fight Of The Night At ONE: COLLISION COURSE II
Japanese striking standout Momotaro will go head-to-head with former ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Title contender Walter Goncalves in what's expected to be a ferocious clash between a calculated striker and an aggressive heavy-hitter.
The two men will throw down at ONE Championship’s final event of the year, the previously recorded ONE: COLLISION COURSE II, which airs this Friday, 25 December.
Momotaro, measuring 12 centimeters taller than his rival, will no doubt use his reach to pop shots at the heavy-handed Brazilian from the outside, and he’ll do so by using his unique style that's honed from both karate and Muay Thai.
Ahead of the bout, Momotaro was grateful to have his team behind him and many fans in his corner.
“Thank you so much for your support,” he said.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CIlH5otBhuN/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
Goncalves, meanwhile, will most likely take the action to his Japanese opponent and not let off the gas from the opening bell.
He loves to trade leather in the heat of battle, as witnessed during his clash with ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon.
The Brazilian, keeping it short and simple, reminded fans nearly a month ago that he’d been preparing for this showdown – and you could see his aggressive style while working the pads.
“Training hard to fight soon,” he wrote in an Instagram post.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CHvYPM9JneB/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
If Momotaro can keep the bout on the outside, he might very well secure the victory and get closer to a top-five ranking in 2021.
But he’ll have to get past Goncalves’ furious style – a style that could allow the Brazilian to steal the win and a future shot at one of the division’s top athletes.
No matter who wins, martial arts fans can expect an absolute war when these fighters step into the Circle on Christmas Day.
Catch Momotaro vs. Goncalves at the previously recorded ONE: COLLISION COURSE II this Friday, 25 December, by downloading the ONE Super App.

Winner Of Kairat Akhmetov Vs. Dae Hwan Kim Could Earn World Title Shot
ONE Championship is all set to unleash its final event of the year.
ONE: COLLISION COURSE II, a previously recorded event from the Singapore Indoor Stadium that airs this Friday, 25 December, will feature an explosive Muay Thai main event between Samy “AK47” Sana and Jamal “Kherow” Yusupov.
However, martial arts fans shouldn’t overlook the co-main event battle involving former ONE Flyweight World Champion Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov and former ONE Bantamweight World Title challenger “Ottogi” Dae Hwan Kim, which could see the winner earn a shot at the strap in the near future.
Akhmetov is currently the division’s #3-ranked contender and holds a mixed martial arts record of 26-2.
His ground game has helped him score victories over top contenders like #5-ranked Reece “Lightning” McLaren, former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio, and current ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes.
On the other side of the Circle will be Kim, who dropped down to flyweight to continue his pursuit of a ONE World Title.
The South Korean is a superb striker with a background in Muay Thai – a sport in which he’s captured multiple titles.
That means Friday's bout will be a classic striker-versus-grappler affair. And whoever wins could very well find themselves standing across the Circle from either flyweight king Moraes or top-ranked contender Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson after those competitors fight for the belt in February 2021.
With a potential World Title shot on the line, the Christmas Day contest is guaranteed to deliver.
Catch Akhmetov vs. Dae at the previously recorded ONE: COLLISION COURSE II this Friday, 25 December, by downloading the ONE Super App.
