ブランターに種まきしたオシロイバナは、酷暑のせいか茎ばかりが伸び、蕾は付いても結局咲かないまま萎れてしまったりだったのですが、比較的元気な蕾付きの枝を何本か切って花瓶に挿したところ、室内で花を咲かせてくれました❣️ オシロイバナは別名 “Four o'clock” ともいわれ、午後4時ごろから花を咲かせてちょっと甘酸っぱい香りを放つ可愛いヤツ😆 子どもの頃から至る所で自生していて、大して珍しい植物でもないんだけど、黒い種を集めては割って取り出した白い粉をいっぱい溜めたりしたものです（その後どうしたかは記憶にないのですが…😅） 最近思ったのは、オシロイバナ自体は街でよく見かけるけど、花後の黒い種が付いている姿はあまり見ないような…。品種改良なのか、あまりの暑さで種を作る前に萎れてしまうのか…？ ともあれ、花を咲かせてくれたこの子は本当に可愛い。そして良い香り〜❤️

This is another example of a plant whose common name is less than helpful. The specific epithet jalapa in the scientific name refers to the city of Jalapa (also spelled Xalapa), the state capital of Veracruz, Mexico. Additionally, the distribution map from Plants of the World Online (POWO) shows its native range to stretch from Mexico down to Nicaragua. In other words, this plant may be marvelous, but it’s not from Peru.

The misnaming continues at the family level. The common name “four o’clock” suggests that we should expect these flowers to bloom late in the afternoon, but in reality this trait is highly variable.
