That one was a little grim, so here’s one that’s funnier, as long as you’re not former Utah senator Jake Garn:

A lot of astronauts get spacesick (aka space adaptation syndrome) while getting used to zero gravity. Most get over it after a few days. In the 1980s, Senator Jake Garn (who asked to fly as a congressional observer) got so sick that NASA now uses the tongue-in-cheek "Garn scale", with one Garn being the maximum level of space sickness attainable. Legend has it that no one else has achieved the full Garn.

All looked confuse,some weary or catious,some hostile,but the twins keep on going with calm smile on their face.

"Come & follow us,we will show you around & when you need some questions answered,*holds a small rod with a button* you can call ms.renia,she has all the answers you need to know….well some of them *giggles*"

Soon the two mysterious"geminicons",while remain on guard,as they walked down the hall,many murmur as some couldn't help but feel their sparks in pained as they remember their own home,so fimiliar before the final days of their world.

President Ford signed the Equal Credit Opportunity Act Amendments and the Consumer Leasing Act into law on March 23, 1976.

“This is a very, very important day for all American consumers of every persuasion, of every race, of all ages,” President Ford said at the signing ceremony. “The Equal Opportunity amendments and the Consumer Leasing Act reflect our joint determination to achieve goals of fairness and equality in a broad range of business transactions, transactions which millions of American consumers engage in every day of every year.”

When it was originally enacted in 1974, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act prohibited discrimination in credit transactions because of gender or marital status. These amendments broadened the scope to bar creditor discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, age, receipt of public assistance, or exercise of credit rights under law. The bill also required creditors to respond to credit applications within a set timeframe and to provide a statement of specific reasons when they refused an applicant.

The Consumer Leasing Act amended the Truth in Lending Act to cover leases for personal property items like cars or furniture. This legislation required lessors to disclose specific information about leasing terms to prospective lessees and included provisions to discourage “balloon” leases with large final payments. Providing meaningful details to consumers would help them to make better informed leasing decisions.

President Ford signed both bills in the Rose Garden. Virginia Knauer, Special Assistant for Consumer Affairs, joined him at the ceremony along with several members of the House of Representatives and Senate. “I am delighted to sign both bills today, and congratulate the Members of Congress, both Democrat and Republican, for their working with us on this project,” President Ford said. “The bills add to a growing list of steps that we have taken in the last year to help give all consumers a far fairer shake, to make our country far more equitable and a more just place for all Americans to live.”

The term was used by Frank White in his 1987 book The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution to describe the incredible stories from astronauts who describe the feelings and thoughts they had when viewing the Earth from the outside, and the changes that the effect inspired. ""Jake'' Garn, who was a shuttle traveler before the Challenger tragedy. Coined by Frank White, author and philosopher, in his 1987 book of the same name, the overview effect is a term used to describe the emotions experienced. What is The Overview Effect The Planetary Collective describes its short film, Overview, thusly: Astronauts who have seen the Earth from space have often described the ‘overview effect’ as an experience that has transformed their perspective of the planet and mankind’s place upon it, and enabled them to perceive it as our shared home, without boundaries between nations or species. The Overview Effect is the psychological, emotional, and spiritual results from viewing the Earth from space. Indigenous peoples seem to have an understanding of this oneness and unity, but it has escaped many people living within western cultures until now. Emilie, we want to thank you for taking the Time (intentionally capped) out of your schedule, especially since you are currently on your “Fight Like a Girl” Tour. I have been a Plague Rat for years so I’m grateful to have this opportunity and am going to try not to overwhelm you with questions. I would like to ask you things that have not been asked, but as you said on The Opheliac Companion, everything has been said or sung. So hopefully I can express the questions in some different ways.

I’m going to try to start from the beginning. In the song “Swallow” you say, “I’m not a faerie but I need more than this life so I became this creature representing more to you than just another girl. And if I had a chance to change my mind, I wouldn’t for the world.” Tell me about the birth of Emilie Autumn as we know her and the Asylum. And what is it about the Victorian age that draws you in so? Emilie Autumn : Thanks for having this little teatime chat with me! The Victorian era is absolutely fascinating on so many levels. Amongst many other terrifying developments, the 19th century saw the birth of medicine and psychiatry as we recognize it today. It was also the era of the industrial revolution, the gradual shattering of the class system largely due to this revolution, an era of glorified mourning and elaborate death obsession, and so much more. The primary fascination however is what this era has in common with our present day, and how, in a lot of unfortunate cases, nothing much has changed.

Your songs are what initially drew me to you with the melodic (and sometimes intentionally not) harmonies and lyrics, some call them “Victorianindustrial”. When I first heard them, I felt like I connected to them so much I did some research on what was behind it all, especially The Opheliac album. What I discovered was how brutally honest and open you are about your own bipolar condition, medications, and suicidal thoughts. I admire this because it is often such a dirty little secret and any of us who have had the experience have almost perfected the art of faking being okay, which you actually discuss on “The Art of Suicide” track on The Opheliac Companion. There you talk about what happens when you can’t fake it, which I think actually hearing, as personal as that is, is comforting to people. In fact, when I asked a couple of teen girl fans I know what they would want to ask you, they both alluded to these feelings. I understand that writing and performing the songs is something you do for yourself as a catharsis, but how do you feel knowing that you are also reaching girls who are suffering and letting them know that they are not alone in that? EA : That’s very nice to hear, and it is in fact my most important goal, to help both boys/girls, men/women to realize and truly believe that they are NOT alone. They’re really not. It’s become such a passion for me because I was very much alone in my less than pleasant life situations, and I want to be to others what I myself did not have. It’s a bit like my Asylum For Wayward Victorian Girls book… I wanted to write the book I wish I’d had growing up with these issues, to have someone tell me that just because you’re crazy doesn’t mean you’re crazy. But what you mention regarding the honesty in songs and such is equally meaningful in that it comes from a very real place, a place that I find can only be accessed when you have nothing left to lose. A marvelous freedom comes when you have nothing to shelter, hide, protect… when all your dirty little (or large) secrets are out, when judgment is inevitable, and when you don’t even care about this anymore. What has been such an interesting phenomena for me has been that, the moment I stopped caring what other people thought about me is the same moment that others started caring what I thought. That’s how I learned how interesting honesty can be.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) was introduced on May 18, 1977, by Senator Ted Kennedy and was signed into law by President Carter on 25 October 1978. The bill was cosponsored by nine Senators: Birch Bayh, James O. Eastland, Jake Garn, Walter Huddleston, Daniel Inouye, Charles Mathias, John L. McClellan, Gaylord Nelson, and Strom Thurmond. The FISA resulted from extensive investigations by Senate Committees into the legality of domestic intelligence activities. These investigations were led separately by Sam Ervin and Frank Church in 1978 as a response to President Richard Nixon’s usage of federal resources, including law enforcement agencies, to spy on political and activist groups. The law itself was crafted in large part in closed door meetings between legislators and members of the Justice Department. The act was created to provide judicial and congressional oversight of the government's covert surveillance activities of foreign entities and individuals in the United States, while maintaining the secrecy needed to protect national security.  Read the full article

A Brief History of Astronauts in Congress

On November 3, Arizona elected Democratic candidate and former astronaut Mark Kelly to complete John McCain’s six-year term in the Senate, which ends in January 2023.

Before joining NASA’s 1996 class of astronaut candidates, Kelly served as a test pilot and captain in the United States Navy. Kelly completed four missions to the International Space Station before retiring from NASA and the U.S. Navy in 2011. Kelly announced his run for the senate seat in February 2019 and centered his campaign on science and the perspective he can bring as an engineer who’s seen Earth from orbit, he told the Verge’s Loren Grush in 2019. Now, he’s the fourth astronaut elected to Congress.

Kelly is married to former Arizona representative Gabby Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in 2011.

“Mark was the best candidate that the Democrats recruited to run for a U.S. Senate spot,” says Chuck Coughlin, a political strategist in Arizona, to the Atlantic’s Marina Koren. “It’s still a glamorous thing to be an astronaut.”

John Glenn

The first astronaut-turned-politician was John Glenn, who served as a Marine pilot and test pilot, and in 1962 became the first American and third person to orbit Earth. Glenn ran for congressional seats in Ohio for the first time in 1964, thwarted first by a head injury and then in later campaigns by a rival Democrat, Howard Metzenbaum in the primaries.

But in 1974, Metzenbaum blundered when he said in a campaign speech that Glenn—who’d served for two decades in the Marine Corps—had never held a real job. Four days before the primary election, Glenn gave a memorable speech that made his career. The Washington Post’s Amber Phillips republished the text of the speech in 2016 after Glenn’s death.

Here is an excerpt of the first half of that speech:

“It wasn’t my checkbook, it was my life that was on the line. You go with me as I went the other day out to a veteran’s hospital, look at those men out there with their mangled bodies in the eye and tell them they didn’t hold a job. You go with me to any Gold Star Mother and you look her in the eye and you tell her that her son did not hold a job. You go to Arlington National Cemetery where I have more friends than I like to remember, and you think about this nation, and you tell me that those people didn’t have a job.”

Glenn won the primary by over 100,000 votes and then won the general election. He would then win three more terms on the Senate, representing Ohio from 1974 to 1999. And in 1998, when Glenn was 77 years old, he became the oldest person to go to space to participate in a nine-day study on aging.

After Glenn’s election in 1974, the next astronaut elected to Congress was Harrison “Jack” Schmitt, the Apollo 17 lunar module pilot. New Mexico elected Schmitt to the Senate in 1977, Robert Z. Pearlman writes for Space.com. In 1972, Schmitt had become one of the last two people to walk on the moon. He served only one term in the Senate—his colleagues in Congress nicknamed him “Moonrock” for his abrasive and out-of-touch personality, reports the Atlantic. His opponent clinched the next election with an ad that asked voters, “What on Earth has [Schmitt] done for you lately?”

John “Jack” Swigert

In 1982, John “Jack” Swigert became the third astronaut elected to Congress, and the first to the House of Representatives, this time by Colorado. Swigert joined the Apollo 13 crew just three days before the mission because the original command module pilot, Thomas Mattingly, had been exposed to measles. Swigert never served as a Representative because he died of cancer in December of 1982 just before he would have taken office.

Apollo 15 command module pilot Al Worden, STS-90 payload specialist Jay Buckey, and STS-128 mission specialist and engineer José Hernández also ran for seats in Congress, but lost in either the primary or general elections, per Space.com.

Two members of Congress, Senator Jake Garn from Utah and Representative Bill Nelson from Florida, also travelled to space aboard space shuttles as congressional observers in the 1980s, before the Challenger tragedy.

“When you’re up in space looking down at the round blue ball we call Earth, it becomes pretty clear that we’re all in this together.” Kelly wrote on Twitter in September, per the Atlantic. “And that’s how politics should be: working together to solve problems and improve people’s lives.”
