I think part of what draws me to Bat is that it’s so completely different from everything else I follow. It’s not based on a real event, it isn’t calm, it isn’t traditional.
Dear Evan Hansen represents today’s fight with mental illness and suicide.
Hamilton is about a famous figure’s life.
Be More Chill is a little more out there, but still grapples with the high school struggle.
Bat Out Of Hell is none of these things. It’s a tale of love, yes, but it’s so much more.
First off, the set design. It’s incredibly detailed, which I think is not too common (at least with Broadway shows). Falco Towers, Raven’s bedroom, the Falcos’ living space, the Deep End...don’t even get me started on the stage details themselves. The tower, the mattress, Falco Tower’s façade, the screens...there was so much put into this so that you have so many places to look! It matches the mood perfectly, somehow, and that’s the mark of a great designer. Not to mention the lights, which perfectly capture the mood and the personality of the characters onstage.
The storyline itself is gorgeous - and that’s because it’s not a typically-represented love story. There are three main romantic relationships we’re meant to focus on - Raven & Strat, Zahara & Jagwire, and Falco & Sloane. Each relationship encapsulates different points. Raven and Strat have just met, are just beginning to explore what being in love means. Zahara and Jagwire have been through this, and Zahara doesn’t want to go through it again. Jagwire wants to give it another go, prove that they are meant to be. Falco and Sloane are two people that are sick of each other. They’re the ultimate embodiment of teenage romance gone wrong; they had a night together, Sloane got pregnant, and Falco felt obligated to stay. They ultimately stayed together simply because they couldn’t leave Raven on her own. Fortunately, they forgive each other and realise that their love is difficult, but it’s real.
Steinman’s worldbuilding is complex. We enter Obsidian just for the resolution, but their world has been through the Chemical Wars, a mass-mutation, and the eradication of 99.9% of the population. They’re still struggling - Falco (and Sloane, but in a different way) to rebuild, the Lost to survive and thrive, and Raven to escape her father’s shadow and live her life. This isn’t a utopia. The best part about it is that we see into all aspects of the world; we don’t just focus on the love stories. It lends a realness and three-dimensionality to the story that might not be there otherwise.
All in all, I just really really love what Bat started out as and what it’s become. I can’t wait to see how it’s carried on in the future (even if we lose the original actors...I’m sure there will be ones equal to the task who will step up to bat. (puns😆))
